New owner, question about apn and AT&T - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got a nexus 4, I'm on att and I pulled my sim directly from an iPhone 5, use an adapter.
It works fine and gets data and it will show and H, when I'm on H+, does it show the +?
Or does the H represent H and H+?
Do I new to create a custom apn other than what the phone assigned stock?
Thanks, just want the fastest speeds I can get.

Don't know what APN you're using, so you may be leaving some speed on the table.... But you are correct that the "H" represents all forms of HSPA, including +

Some Roms actually show the plus also and there's also a thread to show you how to make it show the H, H+ or 4G if that's your preference. Sorry for not linking it, kind of a pain to do from the xda app.

Can you help me here...I want right get as much speed as possible. All I'm using is what the phone automatically assigned.
I had an iPhone 5 with lte prior and did nothing to change my plan.
Thanks in advance.

These are the screenshots from my one x, should get you HSPA+ at least.
I also use this app/widget to tell when its changes.

I honestly have no idea. I get data regardless of pta, phone or the wap default apn.

Mine is the same way, but I just put "phone" and don't even touch the other fields. Pta is for lte, phone is for hspa+.

Does this give you the h+ speeds? I'm using it right now but I can't get the h+ network, but I can on the stock APN.

I get pretty good speeds with "phone". I usually get between 3 and 5mbps where I live which is fine for me. What speeds are you getting? I never even looked at the stock setting because I unlocked, rooted and flashed xylon right away. Was stock the WAP.Cingular APN?

It's because of how the iPhone LTE plan you came from is provisioned. It's different than the rest of their LTE plans. Just leave "phone" instead of "pta" and you'll be fine.

Data off when on a call

Is it normal for 3G data to turn off when on a phone call?
I don't remember it doing that on my previous Evo3D... Thanks

What setup do you have? Different ROMs?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
For me that happens usually when 3G signal is slow so it changes to 2G to keep call up.
It's same with sgs3, note2 and iphone4 if 3G signal is not really good. Nokia lumia 800 switches back to 3G from 2G after signal gets better but calls fail more often too.

I don't know which set up I have. Everything is in default except for my rom and kernel. My data never turns off when I get a call or when I'm calling. I kinda wish it did. I could save that extra juice. I have used many roms and it's the same scenario.

So I have this idea...

I was hoping to get some opinions on this idea since T-Mobile's coverage is pretty bad in my neighborhood. I'm thinking of porting my number to Google voice then pointing it to a Skype number and running it all through clear 4g for $50/mo unlimited with unlimited calling on Skype for $3/mo. Thoughts?

Depends on if you want to have a phone when you really need it. VoIP is useless without a high speed connection.

If you don't have a good cell coverage, nothing will magically give you a reliable service, unless you have WiFi everywhere you go.

Save yourself from the trouble and switch to AT&T. I really think it's a ridiculous idea.

Best baseband to use with T-Mobile? And how do I update it.

I remember on my evo on sprint long ago you just used a updated zip.

"Best"?
If you don't care about LTE, download and flash the .48 baseband.

Otherwise follow this guide if you want to try LTE. (If it's available in your area)

It goes a little farther than that. Whether you want LTe or not. 48 is known to dropout alot. I get a better signal and faster data speeds with the older radios

Current Rogers APN settings

I'm not sure if this is the right forum, so I apologize if it isn't. What are the current working Rogers APN settings both general and LTE-specific? Thanks

Thanks.
Out of curiosity, does anyone know if the LTE APN settings will work for regular network stuff or is there a separate APN for that. If there is, can someone please post that as well?

I ran it for a while on my N4 and when I was out of an LTE zone it dropped down to HSPA+ with no problems so I think you can just use the LTE apn.

that is true. It depends how much data you use and how often.
