SONY: Xperia Z will receive Android 4.2 "shortly after launch" - Xperia Z General

The flagship will get Android 4.2 "shortly after launch"
Source: http://blogs.sonymobile.com/2013/01/10/912-xperiazchat-with-lego-svardsater-roundup/
According to phandroid, we can take their word:
"Sony has been plenty transparent with their plans for updates to their entire lineup of Android phones, so we take them for their word when they promise to keep us updated via their official blog."

Well Sony been good about updating their devices lately so I can definitely believe it'll happen a month or 2 after launch. Kudos if they do

They may not be the fastest OEM when it comes to upgrades, but they sure have been sticking to their update timelines
I also appreciate the option of unlocking the bootloader by oficial means.

Edit: SE Brazil withdraws statement about 2.3 Gingerbread in Nov. 2011 for X10

Found on twitter Brazil and linked to "complain here" reclameaqui.com website. I had to use google translate, but it seems some regions may be discussing getting official 2.3 in Q4 2011.
Edit: SE Brazil withdrew statement the next day saying the Arc would have 2.3 and older devices will stay on current Android OS. I was really hoping SE had a change of heart. Instead, they quickly confirmed we are on our own. Oh well, Sorry Guys
Edit March 24, 2011: Sony Ericsson released statement that due to consumer response and development of Gingerbread for the Arc and Play has allowed SE to bring 2.3.3 update to the X10. Update scheduled for end of Q2-beginning of Q3 2011(june/july).
Edit June 15, 2011: SE Brazil releases statement that multitouch will be implemented in the 2.3.3 update, allowing for 3D maps etc. Some people speculate that SE Brazil is talking about dualtouch. However, SE addresses this in the comments saying that SE knows the difference between dualtouch and multitouch.
SE translated statements:
This is the SE response to an upset Brazilian X10 user who was publicly complaining to SE about the lack of updates to 2.2 on a well known Brazilian website. Click on the link at the bottom of this post for the entire post.

***Final consideration of the Company
Regarding questions on the upgrade of the line Xperia smartphone to version 2.2 of Android, Sony Ericsson announced that in 2011 the company will focus efforts on its new line of Xperia handsets that come with the most current version of Android 2.3 from the product Xperia (tm) Arc. The devices that are already in the portfolio company's released so far, will keep the version 2.1 of the Android operating system, updated in December 2010, and it offers unique features entertainment such as video recording in HD, plus access to thousands new applications and a unique user experience with graphical user interfaces richer. The update for Android 2.1 is available on the company website through the link sonyericsson.com / support.

****June 15, 2011- SE Brazil posts on their blog.....
With the update release date approaching, many readers want to know what changes, what changes and what will not happen with the Xperia ™ X10.
Thinking about it, the Preview will make a series of posts about these key points. The goal is to answer the questions as the information is released by Sony Ericsson.
The first point: the long awaited multi-touch will be included in the update for the Gingerbread (Android 2.3). So a lot of apps that already run perfectly in version 2.1 of the system, gain new functions.
For example, Google Maps, you can change the perspective and view of the map even more clearly the projection of the 3D buildings, when they become available in the area that is viewed by the user.
Preview Track for more important points explained, as the changes and what does not change the operation of the X10. Until then.
I think there'll be a message from Sony which says: The information from SE Brazil is wrong, there won't be any updates.
But it would be cool to get that update.
doesn't 2.3 require 512mb ram?
There's a 2.3 custom rom for the X10, so it works fine with less than 512MB.

Not positive, but at least the regional branches are being receptive to the idea.
This answer is a little vague... there will be updates, but it is not clear if it is going to show up on X10... maybe they are talking about Xperia arc...
no, android 2.3 hasnt got any official requierments
512MB ram was just hoax

The Arc is coming with 2.3, so it wouldn't be updated to gingerbread. Also, the SE response it to an X10 owner not happy about not updating to 2.2.

A long way off. But it would be nice if they confirm that 2.3 is still on the table and being discussed.
Let's see how it ends
I think it's not real
until Nov 2011 we will have cracked bootloader and Android 4.0 LOL :-D
Wow.. I'm from Brazil and I didn't see that.
It really says "We reported that Sony Ericsson will not release the 2.2 version of Android, but the 2.3 which is expected in October 2011" but I think this is 100% bull**** from the PR person just to shut the customer complain down. Most companies does that on this site.
"...but the 2.3 which is expected in October 2011..."
I really, really, really, really doubt this. Like, why such a random month like October? It's 8 months from now till October, so wtf...
Well, you know it took about 4 months to release 435 FW, with crappy Mediascape pinchzooming and calendar...
So I don't surprised if it would take a year to rollout a 2.3 for SEX10. But I would really surprised if they do this ever ))
Amazing surprise
although im becoming happier with my phone every time i use it. I would love to get 2.3 on here.
After analyzing this, I have a conclusion: it isn't real.
I have some points to say that.
1. SE says that X10 running 2.1 delivers a full good experience for the users, so they'll rather to keep it in that way. They'd supposedly have problems developing a 2.2 version (I think that's just an excuse but... meh), so working in 2.3 for X10 means even more problems for them. They just won't make the effort.
2. I think X10 will be supported only until june or july. Then SE will start to work in the possible next Android version (2.4?) BUT only for Arc, Neo and PlayStation phone. But, in case that an update comes in Q4 of 2011 for X10 it won't be Gingerbread for sure, most likely another ROM build version with some improvements.
3. I don't know about any company to be interested on upgrading a phone that originally came with 1.6 to 2.3, no matter if the phone could be capable to run it. SE won't be the first.
So... Sorry guys, but this will not happen. I had the little hope too when I saw the new.

Want Ice Cream Sandwich? Get it on your 2011 Xperia™ smartphone from mid-April

During Mobile World Congress I was lucky enough to taste an actual Ice Cream Sandwich (or two) at the Google booth, and you’ll all be able to experience this sweet software treat on our 2011 Xperia smartphones, starting with the first models from mid-April.
Our developers have been hard-at-work to ensure we’re on track and the highest standards are met to deliver you the best possible user experience on Xperia 2011 smartphones with the upgrade to Android 4.0 platform release.
The first Xperia models to receive the upgrade will be Xperia arc S, Xperia neo V and Xperia ray. For these first models, the rollout will start mid-April and continue over 4-6 weeks.*
Following on, Xperia arc, Xperia PLAY, Xperia neo, Xperia mini, Xperia mini pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active and Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman will receive their scoop starting from the end of May/early June.*
We’ll get back to you once the rollout begins to keep you in the loop with progress and to tackle any questions you might have – as I said, please don’t worry if your kit (customized software specific to your operator and handset) isn’t immediately accessible; they will be made available as soon as they’re ready to go.
The latest version of Android 4.0 is a very powerful OS, brimming with new features and functionality, but it also requires more resource from your smartphone and this may impact performance in some user scenarios. To ensure it’s suitable, and performs for your individual needs, my friends at Developer World have taken a closer-look at how Ice Cream Sandwich will change your 2011 Xperia smartphone – check it out here.
Because this update is a significant revamp of some of your phone’s features, we want to make sure you take a conscious and informed decision to upgrade, so that you continue to enjoy optimum experiences from your Xperia smartphone.
Therefore, we’ll only be making it available for download via PC Companion and Bridge for Mac (i.e. not over the air via 3G or WiFi), and you also won’t receive any update requests or notifications.
Again, we will get back to you with more information in mid-April when the rollout begins.
Finally, with regards to our all new Sony Xperia S, which will be upgraded to Android 4.0 starting from the later part of the second quarter, we will get back with more detailed information on timing over the next weeks.
Talk soon, Ant.
*The availability and scheduling of this software upgrade and specific models upgradeable to Android 4.0 will vary by market and carrier requirements.

Thought it was worth posting, for the most of us Xperia Play users won't see full ICS until end of May early June? sigh =\
What??? A new date change??? Now end may/early June??? It was end april/early may!!!
Where is this info from?
Oh, and change the title. You are posting this info on the Xpera Play forum, so the date is not mid-april and makes people think the update will come earlier than expected.

Oh thanks, I've been a few days out without internet, that's why I didn't know about this.
This long wait is a bit too much. Now June...
I hate this update method from Android. It should be like Windows. I mean, an unique OS that installs only what it needs, without passing through the hands of another developer (Sony in this case). It's the worst point of Android.
And I repeat to the OP: better change the title of the thread.

For me the HW acceleration is the biggest deal, the browser is incredibly slick, compared to the old one... the UI has a cleaner look and the fonts are more readable, the mail client is a lot better as well.
I did notice the increased RAM usage right of the bat in the beta version but hopefully they'll have worked around this in the final release.
Looking forward to the release

Sony is yet to decide which 2011 Xperia phones will get Jelly Bean

When a Sony spokesman let it slip that the company wouldn't update its 2011 Xperia Android smartphones to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, users got upset. Big time!
But now it's time to turn that frown upside down, for Sony has released an official statement that this information was given "in error". The company says it's still researching which of the devices will actually get to receive the tasty Jell Bean update.
We are actively investigating Android OS upgrades for all devices, but in the meantime, our Ice Cream Sandwich rollout for Xperia S and 2011 Xperia smartphones continues as planned.
This is great news for owners of 2011 Xperia devices like the Xperia Arc and Xperia Mini Pro. All there's left to do now is wait and believe in Sony, though at that rate, we wouldn't expect ay update earlier than the holiday season.

Andoid 5 for the Xperia Z?

Do you think there will be an update to Android 5.x for the Xperia Z?
Been chatting to sonys customer support, but they just say that they don't have an idea about the update plans.
This question is so absurd... The devices isn't even out yet and now you're asking for an update which doesn't even exist yet for android in general? Jellybean 4.2 isn't even stable yet now android 5 is already being questioned?

I just zipped it because xda won't allow me t o upload video files.

please, tell me why this question is absurd? just because a device isn't out yet, i'm not allowed to be interested in its future? don't you think sony doesn't have roadmap for their devices? do you think, they just live day by day? don't you think they are planning the support for their devices for years in advance?
and it isn't like the xperia z is their flagship, and android 5 is faaaaaar faaaaar away? and is it really forbidden for a device with an age of half a year (then) to get an update to the newest os? do devices have to stick with the os they were originally equipped with?
when you by a windows 7 pc, and you ask if there'll be an update for windows 8 for this device or if it'll be updateable, is this absurd too?
i didn't ask something like "has anyone gotten android five on his xperia z already?"...i just asked if there is a *chance* we'll get an offical update to android 5 by sony for their first supersmartphone-flagship.
im sure it will be able to get the android 5 update but you are asking questions not even Sony knows when android 5 is coming out so how are they suppose to answer something they have no control of when it gets released.....

i'm quite sure sony doesn't know WHEN android 5 will be released, but i'm also quite sure that sony knows if they will be giving android 5 support for their flagship, and if this device has the capabilities to run android 5.
once again: i do not want to know WHEN android 5 will be out, WHEN there will be an update for the z, or HOW to get the update. i'm just interested if there might by a chance that there'll be an official android 5 for the xperia z SOMEDAY.

Whatever comes after Jelly Bean will be available for the Xperia Z. They have no reason not to, when it comes to the market it'll be the most powerful Android device there is. It'll remain high-end spec-wise for a long time.
If i bought a PC in '08/'09 I wouldnt have asked Dell/Acer/HP if it is updateable to Windows 8. Bad analogy. Its absurd because customer service reps are not engineers/developers/business managers. The next version of android hasnt been annouced, feature rumours havent even started as far as I know. Pretty sure no manufacturer has even gotten a SDK or some other taste of the next version either or else they would have been "leaks" and speculations about what's new. The Phone is a 2013 High end device and as expected would the very LEAST get the 2013 Release of the OS. For all we know it could be JB3 4.3.1 lol

I suppose a better question would be (and I don't know the answer) I'm hoping some long term Sony owners might know though.
How good are Sony at updating their phones? (not saying fast.. just if they do)
Looking into their past is it likely that a new Android OS release of some lets say... 9 months after the phone is out would be updated onto this phone is likely or no.

Very. I mean, every phone they release gets at least one major version update and most higher-end phones get more.
The whole 2011 range started out on 2.3 and got an update to 4.0.
Most of 2012 started on 2.3 and is on 4.0 now. All phones that started on 4.0 and all mid+high-end phones from 2012 are getting an update to 4.1 and probably 4.2.
Sony is doing pretty well with updates. They've gotten faster too.
My point here is Sony only promises 18months of support for every device they released and if ever there would be only minor revisions between those 18 months then there won't be any official android 5 in Xperia Z.
It's likely to get "android 5"... Xperia Z is a supersuperphone
They will release xperia z with 4.1.2 and there is no exact date for 4.2 the os which was released months ago so what do u guys think when will the xperia z users will get keylime update which is not released. This ie the only question which bothers me otherwisr the phone is ****in amazing
Sent From My Galaxy S3
Expect at least 2 major releases for Xperia Z as a flagship device. Since it comes with 4.1.2 and will be updated to 4.2 in its first month - i'd say it'll get at least two updates after that - especially with Sony's lastest efforts to support dev community etc.
I don't see what is so absurd about op's question. IO2013 is like two months after general availability of this phone, then you'll probably see key lime pie at end of q3 or something so maybe a six month difference.
So absurd no, but probably stupid since no one has the answer to that - even Sony. If they release an upgrade thats fine but why would you want to run OEM versus stock? First thing I'd do if I bought the Z would be to wipe off the Sony customizations and build my own.

I kinda doubt this. android 4.4 should be announced by google later this months, then it is highly unlikely that sony would be able to release it for the Z1 on the 7th of November. But I really wish they can, I even wish they skip 4.3 and focus on 4.4, if we can get it before the end of this year then hell yeah

I know that this is the case, but this has been the case so long ago (not with android 4.4), yet manufacturers take months before releasing the updates. 4.3 rolled out months ago but you could barely find phones already have 4.3 (apart from note 3 and HTC one) even the SGS4 which used to get updates before anyone else didn't get it yet UNLESS manufacturers already decided to skip 4.3 and focused to get 4.4 faster.
Again I really wish that Sony release 4.4 in November or even earlier (I am not against that, I have the Z1 myself) but as I said before it is highly unlikely.

what you say is true but I guess the chasing pack (HTC, LG, Sony) are maybe just realizing the importance of timely updates (that probably was a factor in Samsung's ascendance. HTC lost the android crown because it just lost lots of loyal customers who never saw any updates). Since Hardware is more or less commoditized already, the turf wars are gonna be fought on Software front. Faster updates could be USP and Sony might want to claim bragging rights (porting might be easier/faster for Sony as they are almost stock anyway!

I totally agree with you. Sony said they will release faster updates. Sony has advantage here because of the light skin but this is not the only thing, actually it is the least time consuming thing because it doesn't need much optimization and testing, at the end it is mostly an app that you can install to change how the phone look. The problem is to get it to work along with all the features with THIS SPECIFIC DEVICE, they need to test how the software would perform in THIS hardware (mainly chipset and screen and other things). And here is the bigger advantage of the Z1 as it uses the same chip and screen resolution as the nexus 5 (according to rumors), this will definitely help sony to release the new android versions much faster to the Z1 as it will already be optimized and tested. but again I doubt they will release it two weeks after the release of the 4.4 to the nexus devices but I still hope they will.
Guys, have a look here

They don't list any sources either, as far as I am concerned neither "presumption" is correct, OEM's get new android versions months before there even announced so Sony may very well be cooking up Kitkat ready for November.
I don't believe it, if anything I'd expect a 4.3 release in November and a 4.4 in early 2014 hopefully.

If they were, it's time we built a monument for Sony
Highly unlikely.. But if it happened to be the case, Sony deserves a lot of credit. In my opinion they receive too little credit for their contributions to AOSP. But that's another matter
Sent from my Xperia Z1
Possibly. Google said they want kit Kat for everyone.

This is getting old, but anyway here it is again...
Just look at Sony´s smartphone and firmware history m8´s, and you will see that this is never going to happen...
- we are lucky to recive 4.3 in late Q1 or perhaps Q2 of 2014, and after that the Z1 will be abandoned...
IF the rumor really WAS true, Sony would have turned 180 degrees in their business strategy... (and that is not likely, is it now ??)
Becource sony has actually acted that way for years now, at least since Xperia X10...
Sony is in this marked for the money, nothing else...
That is also why the Z1 was shipped with 4.2.2, and NOT 4.3 from the beginning...
- this way Sony can meet Googles demands on major updates, without actually giving YOU anything new...
Just think for 2 sec, about this:
WHY would Sony release a new flagship like the Z1 with only 4.2.2, when it would be just as mutch work for them to release it with the current 4.3 ??
This is also not new for Sony, the X10 was shipped with 1.6...
Sony is NOT stupid, the history repeats it self over and over, and we buy the products anyway...
BTW other Sony "feature" is these:
DON`T be suppriced to find that the Z and other phones is going to get the 4.3 before the Z1, that is actually also normal sony behavior.
DON´T be suppriced if you at last, one day finally will get 4.4 anyway (Q4 2014), that there will be features missing in the new version, that also is normal sony behavior.
The rumours come from a pretty unreliable source, so I'm not basing any of my analysis on that. Rather based on how close Sonys UI is to AOSP, porting it to 4.3 or 4.4 seems more trivial than it would for HTC or Samsung, considering their much larger deviations from AOSP. But ultimately only time will tell.

Because they've been working on the Z1 for longer than 4.3 has been available and wanted to beat the other manufacturers to market with an S800 phone (note that the LG G2 also shipped with 4.2.2 and is the only other phone with an S800 CPU), there literally is no other plausible explanation, stop being such a downer man. Ultimately 4.2.2/4.3/4.4 doesn't make any difference at all to the average consumer, and in fact, Sony might actually provide a better user experience by sticking to 4.2.2 until the bugs have been ironed out of the new major versions.
They will likely have had a team working on porting their UI to 4.3/4.4 while developing the Xperia Z1, they are just not ready yet.
Maybe you guys dont use to Sony?
Just relax and don't put high hope on update.....(xperia S and TX owner here waiting Z1)
Sent from my LT29i using xda app-developers app
The only for reason for 4.2.2 in Z1, is to claim the amount of major updates without actually give us anything new...
- as i said Sony is NOT stupid, they are in this marked to earn money, nothing else...

THIS IS FUNNY !
This is actually allmost exactly what S/E responded back in the X10 days, when people was on 1.6, waiting allmost a year for 2.1...
- are you shure you dont Work for them ??
4.3 would give new features, and equally importent, it would let Sony be in the android lead for once, but then they have to give you, at least, also 4.4, and Sony don´t want to do that...
- it is better for Sony´s economy, if we all buy a new phone in a year instead...
But DON`T belive me, PLEACE DONT !
Just read the Sony and S/E history instead, and form your oppinion from that...
- then lets talk...
Dont get me wrong, Sony make fantasic smartphones, i love my sony phones...
Sony just dont update them as mutch as you would expect, and for a good reason...

I don't work for them, and excuse me for potentially being naïve, I'm just saying there have been large changes to the inner workings of Sony recently (look up Kaz Hirais One Sony initiative), nothing is impossible!

LOL such a doubter... and it is surprised not suppriced ...
ok let us take a look at Sony's Firmware history:
1. Xperia S(March 2012) launched with GB installed, they released ICS (4.0.4) update around may-june 2012 as promised, then release jellyean 1 year later (may-june 2013)... They actually have released a leaked version earlier at around April 2013 (build .200) so developers can start developing with the jellybean firmware... that is very timely... as expected, they will stop here as Qualcom has stopped supporting the chipset installed in Xperia S... no surprise there.
2. Xperia Z(February 2013) was released with Jelly bean 4.1.2... and then released 4.2.2 mid this year... they also promised 4.3 upgrade around Dec or January...
now lets take a look at Google's release cycle:
ICS 4.0.4 is release on 29 March 2012
JB 4.1.2 is released Oct 2012
JB 4.2.2 is only released Feb 2013
As you can see, Sony has an orderly version release cycle... and they always deliver on their promises... and as you can see after Sony releases a new product, they upgrade it to the latest version 3-4 months later... they are also known to skip versions... (they skipped ICS 4.0.3 and went to 4.0.4)
how much you wanna bet they will release 4.4 on or before Q1 2014?
