[Q] Google Play Store out of stock - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, I have searched the forums both in general for the Nexus 4 and in Q & A, but I have not found the answer to my question. I am wanting to purchase the Nexus 4, but T-mobile is sold out in local stores, on their website, and Google play store is sold out of both versions on its website. I have googled for any sort of update by google, looked at twitter pages, but most things are only people complaining about LG and Google in their phail at meeting the supply and demand. I have not ordered a phone, so in that aspect most of the threads created only apply to those who have already found a way to purchase the device and are waiting for confirmation on shipping or something to that extent. I am simply trying to figure out when I will be able to buy it from the google play store. I definitely do not want to have to chip out $500-$700 for the device from people on Ebay and other websites. So, if someone could help clarify this, it would be greatly appreciated.

no one knows when they will be on sale again on the playstore bro..

No body knows when they'll be available for sale. If you signed up for the email newsletter that they used to do they'll tell you.
Wave one was at a certain time. So was wave two (emailed us in advance that it'll be available in a couple of hours to buy)
It can be available today, tomorrow, three weeks. We don't know. Best thing to do is to follow android sites on twitter such as android police. And they usually tweet when it's for sale. Good luck getting one though, you'll most likely have errors of too many people buying and we can't process your order. What I did was spam f5 on checkout and continued until the wallet pop up came up.

You can't even put the Nexus 4 in the checkout since it says sold out, or sadly I would keep trying, lol. I wish they would give potential customers some sort of update on this issue. Instead of leaving us guessing on when it might become available. I also heard that the build quality of the Nexus 4 is getting worse, like LG is cutting corners to meet the demands of all the back orders already placed. If this is true that is really sucky news for a lot of people.

No. If you read my post correctly. I was going in sequence talking about when IT BECOMES IN STOCK. If it was available to add to cart as this moment and never went to "sold out" no one would have that error.
As far as rumors... I don't comment on those as it is silly to guess without any proof.

I highly doubt the build quality is getting worse because there are only two shipments to go off of anyways.

Well, I hope not, because I really want to buy the phone, I guess I will have to just wait until Google decides to inform us or someone on here finds out something more.

Some sad news on XOOM

So Koush on twitter just announced he is returning his xoom.
which ****en sucks, i hope he is kind enough to give us RM when the sdcard is supported.
and also reports all over the net today say the motorola will stop production on xooms in June...OF THIS YEAR
this all kinda sucks in the eyes of consumers (me + you) for software developers and even accessories. I dont know, maybe im kinda freaking but, it looks as though the motorola xoom is the nexus one of android tablets....i just hope it stays that way in the dev world.
Today seems to be a dark day for the Xoom community as well. All these bad news about the end of production, people canceling Xoom orders for the new G-Tab, now Koush leaving. But life goes on and I love my Xoom! After all, the Xoom is just the vessel for Honeycomb, isn't it? And as long as the bee lives we'll be supported by great developers
Hey Honestly,
Koush is a cool guy and he holds a ton of weight in the android community and I personally respect him and his talent, that being said I could give 2 ****s about what he or anyone else buys, never buys, or returns, and so should everyone else.
Personally the Xoom does what I need it to, and I like it. Some people will feel the same way about the Ipad 2, some people feel the same way about the galaxy tab, and some people feel the same way about Cheese. Out of all of us whos right? Every single one
If you like the Xoom be happy with it, if not return it. Simple as that. My only request is you dont post on here about how awsome your new device is because honestly you can go post that in the forum of the new device and it will not make people angry or sound like your gloating
The Xoom is the Nexus One of the Tab community, because with all of these new devices coming out who knows how much bloat ware or sense or blur or other crap they will have on them. Samsung for one does a totally steller job of providing updates for their devices (thats sarcasm) so I wouldn’t buy anything from them, but again this is my opinion, and someone may totally love their devices and want to catch them all (just like the pokemon) .
As for Motorola, what they’re doing is pretty standard. Think about it they probably have been producing units since Jan possibly even December for a early march release, a 6 month production run in a market where every week a newer shinnier toy comes out I feel is pretty standard.
Thats all just my opinion hope it makes you feel a little better tho And in the great words of Bob Marley, dont worry be happy

Honestly, I doubt this is completely true. It just says that they are stepping down production, and with good reason.
Things like this happen all the time in industry. You build 1 million devices, and then you use your manufacturing capabilities to build other things while you sell down the inventory, then you start pushing out units again once you get to another level.
All this means is that they are selling alot less than they are making, which may or may not change when the wifi version is released.

Wifi will give a price point that more people can agree with.
I'm anxiously awaiting my Wifi order to ship from Amazon.
Motorola showed us in the past that if they don't make money with their device, they quickly stop to support it.
Knowing the Xoom is running on an early version of Honeycomb, this doesn't look good at all...Makes me want to cancel my preorder actually...

I really don't care what koush buys, he bought and sold the galaxy tab 7" in the same amount of time.
If he really cared about the xda community his bootloader would be open source...if he stops making it someone will step in and make one.
Edit: I know he does open source the code, but I'm unsure if the xoom support is in there.

I just got my xoom for the GPS maps and the turn by turn directions. It works good for that so Im keeping mine!
This is really one of the major downsides of the Internet. It used to be that somebody could have a knee-jerk reaction to something, but by the time it filtered through editors, producers, etc., and into the print and publication media it had already been toned down and made far more realistic.
Nowadays, somebody misunderstands or misquotes something, and five minutes later it's believed as fact by the majority of the population, which has been conditioned to get information in tiny little chunks without any appreciation for context.

This development might put the remaing xooms in high demand. Whatever happens I bet they will sell out FAST!. I am glad I allready have 2 of them in my home!. You know what they say..... a bird in the hand is worth 2 xooms on pre order at Amazon! LOL
i FREAKING LOVE my xoom. I have an ipad that also and I never touch it. Go android!!!
android ftw yo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTUwqxHpXMY
i love my xoom too and im pretty content with it. i sold my ipad, two weeks before the announcement of the ipad 2 (robbed the dude on craigslist)
my main concern at this point, and i think its to a certain degree, paranoia, that the pushing up updates, dev community mods and improvements all together will be few and far between.
after typing that i realize thats nonsense, motorola sliced off at least 1-2months of shipping delays by delaying adobe, the sdcard and the 4g...just to be ahead of the pack.
whether that option was smart in the longrun is a question for the finance people. but as a android geek im good with that, just as long as developers (like koush) still have at it.
Thank god Moto priced the Xoom so high that I(and other sane people) got the ipad 2. At least I know that Apple wont just drop their product like that less than 6 months after release.

Has anyone received any useful information from SamsungJohn?

The title pretty much says it all. After a few failed interactions with SamsungJohn; by failed I mean asking legitimate questions and receiving no real answers. Being left with the feeling of corporate glad-handing. I am wondering if anyone has received useful information from him.

He did his job which is pr related. He came here to calm the storm that was brewing with xda members attacking the social networks for lack of support which boils down to he did nothing for us. A few brief conversations we had I don't think he knew much about development

That's economy not revenge. Us here at xda that care about getting timely updates are a really small % last year they sold the most android phones. They have the same goal this year. I think why they have slipped so far this year is they haven't released any cool phones yet ex... nexus s 4g not only that they still have 3 more quarters.

I agree with badboy on this one, combination of economy and lack of phone releases caused the single quarter drop.
As for my original question, i am trying to be an optimist and am hoping to find at least a few people that SamsungJohn helped.
Probably nobody. The questions they were forcing people to ask were more like, "What is the CEO's favorite pony color?" instead of the meat people were wanting here.
Why is everyone fed up with Samsung? They've given us FroYo and amazing hardware (we were top for quite awhile), only surpassed by dual core processors...
I'm glad with the support I've received and with the devs here no one should be complaining.
All the cool kids are doing it. Besides, if no one slams Samsung every 5 minutes we'd all look pretty stupid standing around holding pitchforks and burning brooms.
Personally I've never had any issue with Samsungs support. Releasing 2.2 within 6 months of release seemed pretty fast to me... and exactly what they said they would do (<6 months into a 24 month expected lifespan IS 'soon'). I have never had any unusual or abnormal deficiencies from the phone in any way.
Samsungs problems aren't with phones right now its the other stuff like LCD tvs. Updates have nothing to do with it even Apple seems to be falling a little(with there giant line of BS) so its probably more economy based

Samsung is only required to support their product for 6 months minimum, which means they didn't even have to release Froyo in the first place. And from my understanding, Samsung isn't the only manufacturer that has problems releasing updates.
Wait. How'd we get so far off topic? I thought we were talking about SamsungJohn, not Samsung.

I'd appreciated not being lumped in as a "basher". I have a legitimate complaint about not receiving feedback and resolution to my issues.
I purchased my phone back in September, in the almost 7 months I have owned this phone some of the issues have been fixed others have been ignored.
I have sent 3 emails since September to Samsung Customer Service and Technical support, none of them were answered. I called Samsung and was promised a call back that never came. SamsungJohn comes around and asks us for a bugs/issues list. He asked me to upload mine to google docs then never addressed any of the issues. He told me he worked directly with R&D yet could provide no information on upcoming bug fixes, could not even answer questions like "is the R&D team aware of or working on xxxx bug?"
I'm not a "basher", I am asking if anyone has received any help from SamsungJohn.
EDIT: twolostminds: both of my posts were directed at overstews comment about everyone being sore, neither were directed at your post, just to be clear.
Well like I said, I personally don't feel they did anything wrong regarding the updates, it is about typical for any product support. I think somebodies HTC got a super fast update and it got everyones panties in a wad.
If anything were to dissuade me from buying another Samsung, it would be the crappy attitude of the owner community online.... but I would really have to actually read the whine threads a bit more carefully before that ever happened.
Let me chime in here for a minute. I'm disappointed in this as well. What upset me was the fact that SamsungJohn was wanting to build an ongoing "partnership" with the people at XDA. To the best of my knowledge he is no longer around and there is no explanation as to whats going on.
I feel your frustration as I was made promises that never happened. I had received a PM from SamsungJohn asking for my contact information. I never expected to actually hear from him but I did. I was basically told that Samsung wants to help foster the development we are doing here and would like to help in any way they could. I'm sure I'm not the only one he contacted as they were reaching out to the developers in general. I was asked not to discuss the contents of the conversation so I won't. I was told that I could express Samsungs desire to make things right. I was told that if I needed anything to let him know and he would do what he could to get us what we needed in order to keep the development moving forward. I was aloud to say that much. He was supposed to contact me again to possibly set something Autism related up. I never heard back from him. I have made a few attempts to contact him and have not received anything in return.
When I spoke with him he seemed like a really nice guy and I think he really did want to help. I don't think any of this is his fault. I think the powers that be just decided to go in a different direction. I don't know anything other than what I heard directly from him. I never got the sense that he was stringing us along and I know for a fact that he was reading my blog.
My opinion is that things for whatever reason just didn't work out. I don't blame him for that it was probably completely out of his control. It would be nice to hear from someone in the "know" as to the status of the situation. I think it could have been handled better and with more transparency but it is was it is. I don't think anyone is to blame least of all SamsungJohn himself. I still hope to hear from him as I would love to partner with Samsung on some Autism related things.
I do believe that he was being straight up with us and at the end of the day things were out of his control and he has a job to do.
Hope this helps.

I disagree. The economy, overall, is up from this time last year. But Samsung's profits are down 4% QOQ and 42% YOY. Apple is up, Motorola up, HTC up... Tech everywhere is up.

Hey John, if you read this just tell Samsung not to lock down their software and I'm sure you'll have a lot of repeat customers. You can also throw in that their devs aren't worth a damn and may want to consider outsourcing some of their work to a lot of the guys on these boards.
Personally I am not only disappointed and frustrated with both SamsungJohn and Samsung, but I feel used. He asked us as a community to help by creating list of issues and concerns. Many of us created very well thought out, detailed lists that included tremendous amounts of information including methods of recreating the issues. In exchange for our help they made vague promises of helping our community. SamsungJohn & Samsung took our hard work and information and promptly ignored us. I feel used.
well... at least you know now. I didnt really know what to think of it, but was hopeful. Oh well... corporations arent human... never will be.

Based on past experience, when do u think the next batch of N4's will show up?

Any thoughts on this? I don't recall what has occurred with previous releases (specifically the GNex? N7?) What has been the typical period of tie between initial sellout on launch day and a refreshing of online stock? Fire away!
I called those scumbags at Google playstore and they said - they might get the next stock after a MONTH !!!
A Month is ridiculous , I am off to buying a S3.
Good luck guys...
I don't know what makes Google Reps scumbags, i didn't think they controlled the inventory system in such a direct manner....
Dependent on your area it could be as much as weeks. Several reports or rumors have come in saying as little as three days.
I've been using my i9000 for a while now. I can wait a little while longer despite have an N4 in the cart and not being able to checkout due to errors like many others...

What was the situation with the N7? Didn't they sell out fast. How long was it before they came back into stock?

Smash The Past contest turn of events

"Tomorrow we will be contacting the 100 lucky winners of our Smash the Past contest. Out of more than 140,000 applicants, these lucky fans will get a OnePlus One for only $1.
‘Smash the Past’ stemmed from a conversation a few of us had right as OnePlus was transforming from an idea to a real company. We wanted to build a device that was so good people would smash the phones they already had because they simply couldn’t live up. We believe we have that device in the One, and have been overwhelmed by the response to both the phone and the campaign.
OnePlus is a young startup with bold ideas. It’s tough to just survive in this industry, nevermind shake it up as we hope to do. ‘Smash’ reflects our desire to do just that: show the world that there’s something new available, something that just may be better than your current daily driver. However, we are also strong proponents of using technology to better the daily lives of people across the globe. For this reason, the chosen 100 applicants can choose to either smash their phone as planned, or donate it to the wonderful team at Medic Mobile. Medic Mobile is a nonprofit that recycles old phones for use by healthcare workers in remote areas of the world. As described by a member of the Medic Mobile team:
You're giving the best new tech out there for $1 and recycling users’ existing phones for good. And then we're turning those 100 phones into 1,000 phones for people that were left behind with the tech revolution. It brings it full circle in a really interesting way.
You can learn more about this organization at medicmobile.org or follow them on Twitter at @medic. We encourage you to consider donating your old phone to others in need who can use it, after you get your OnePlus One of course!
We want to thank the 140,000+ people who applied to smash their phones in exchange for a OnePlus One. The applications surpassed our expectations both in volume and creativity - we had no idea there were so many ways to break a phone! We are having a lot of fun reading these and to share this fun, below you have a few of the craziest ideas we found so far -
Playing tennis with it - serving, lobbying, forehand, backhand, slicing, and of course SMASHING.
Demolishing it with a homemade potato gun.
Cooking spaghetti bolognese with the phone as the main ingredient.
Liquidate it with nitrogen and a torque hammer.
Sending it up to space one-way with a model space rocket.
Flamethrower.
Ninja throwing stars.
Parachuting - without parachute.
Thank you for your support and feedback. We’re working to get the OnePlus One in your hands as soon as possible."
The above paragraph is an official statement from Oneplus and a big surprise for all of us that were unhappy and didn't like the Smash your phone gimmick. I think this was a very good decision from Oneplus. :good:

Yeah its not very clear. From what I'm reading it's going to be a small batch of 64gb at launch then followed by a larger batch of 64gb entering June. It doesn't say only 16gb batch in may just that 16gb will be the larger batch. They really need to clarify their statement.
Ready now - 100 for phone smashers
Mid to late May - Larger batch 16GB Silk White for the first batch of invites
Early June - Larger batch 64GB Sandstone Black
Later in June - Increased general availability, people who want it should be able to get an invite without much trouble in June
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Yes, definitely that statement is not clear. It looks like it will be for June-July for the 64GB. There must be some strategy so it won't cannibalize the sales of the 16GB.
Glad they changed their minds after the revolt about smashing the device. Though interesting to see that it was OPPO all along.
I know this is a delayed reply but just wanted to post in the forum on this.
They listened to all the people asking for the 64GB:
Update May 6: "After seeing how popular the 64GB version was compared to the 16GB, we have pushed back the production of the 16GB Silk White in favor of getting the 64GB Sandstone Black out quicker."

Glad they changed their minds after the revolt about smashing the device. Though interesting to see that it was OPPO all along.
I know this is a delayed reply but just wanted to post in the forum on this.

They're not oppo. Read their official statement regarding this.

ZTE cannot do any RMAs in America

So I talked to ZTE support and if you have an issue with the phone they recommend returning the phone since they have no replacements at all.

supposedly Amazon will have them in stock on the 22nd but they probably have backorder queue as well. Not having stock on hand for RMAs is the dumbest thing ZTE could have done or it points to massive RMA rate
Thats not good news. Where did you buy it? Try replacing it through them.
This has been talked about on their official forum. Basically, Passport 2.0 is currently useless because of the lack of stock. Almost all their devices up to and probably beyond the 9/9 shipments are spoken for.
If you have any type of issue that requires and RMA, you are out of luck for at least two months.
This is a huge misstep for a brand trying to make a name in the US. First they underproduce the device leading to delays, now that underproduction is leading to those with faulty devices either accepting a full return or keeping said device.
Can anybody say One+One?

I'm curious, were you trying to get an rma and if so, what was the problem with the phone?

Yeah, OnePlus had a lot of issues at first, but look at them now. Give ZTE time. Besides, why keep a bunch of phones around for RMA when people wanna buy them instead?

Because that's how business works and RMA. You either have to be able to recreate them in a short enough time when an RMA hits or have stock to fulfill it. Or don't offer the Passport 2.0 service.

OP is still terrible. Have you seen the bug list for OP3? They need to hire more developer and spend more time testing. Every year, they basically let the early adopter beta test their rom for the first few months. They do eventually get it fixed but do not buy a OP phone at launch.

Yeah, they got pretty well screwed by Cyanogenmod when they just broke their contract and abruptly walked away. They do seem to be doing a fair job of recovering, but you're right, needs to be better.

I was listening to sound cloud and the phone just rebooted. Ending in a boot loop.
Reset factory and wiping cache did not work.
I talked to newegg this morning. I got a refund.

These companies employ a lot of unconventional business practices because the model they're using is a low margin high sales number scheme. You have to produce units in batches so you don't get stuck with stock you can't move. It's the price we pay for so much phone at so little cost...

It is for me. It's nothing but a win (overall) for the consumer. Sucks if you have a problem with your phone and want a replacement (I just got mine today, so time will tell), but it's a lot of bang for your buck. In general.
I wouldn't say it's nothing but a win. Some can't even get ahold of the device while others with faulty units can't do anything other than return it for a full refund and take their business elsewhere.
Not having enough product to satisfy consumer needs is bad, not having enough to honor your own warranty is worse. It's only bang for your buck if you can get one, and have no issues with it.

That's my point. I get the feeling that the demand isn't quite as strong as it seems from reading the forums and I also feel like the number of units with issues is within the realm of reasonable.
I say this without evidence either way; I just take the online portrayal with a grain of salt. I wasn't even aware of the ZTE forum until a ZTE rep referred to me to it. I never would have found it on my own because I wouldn't have looked. As for XDA, well, it's a certain type of person who hangs out here
Don't get me wrong, it doesn't help ZTE's image to not have enough stock. But the truth is that the OP3 is the only real competitor (in my mind) that is currently available around this price point if you're looking for the same features (I don't consider the Alcatel Idol 4S a real competitor because you get mid-range hardware at a mid-range price rather than flagship hardware at a mid-range price with the Axon 7 and OP3). By and large, you either want the Axon 7 and are willing to wait for it, or you go with the OP3. ZTE's inventory issues might cause them to lose customers if they can't get phones out before the 2016 Nexus phones are announced, though.
I think these are growing pains of a manufacturer taking some bold steps to get in the market with a little caution. They are not anywhere near a flagship known company. The cream of the crop Icrap is the leading smartphone maker in the world and has never ever met launch day demand. I believe it's time to lay off and exercise a little patience.

I believe I've exercised some patience. I pre-ordered on the first day they went up. After multiple delays I'll be lucky to see my device almost two months after its release.
Pre-orders are usually used to judge interest and are a build to of sorts, and they fell way behind on this aspect. I know this happens with a few other companies as well, but I've never had to wait this long.
I know I'm speaking from a point of frustration right now due to the most recent delay hitting hours ago.
