[Q] Tethering T-Mobile Unlimited Data Plan - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I got the Value plan after getting my Nexus 4 (unlimited data) but been having tethering issues. Please try to help me out if you actually understand the situation, don't just say "It works for me..."
Here's the deal, wired tethering works if I use Clockwork Mods Tether App. I used to think I needed to start up my Chrome from a Nexus 4 User agent, but same thing with and without, it works with the tether app (which obviously uses a companion app on the computer). BUT....A while ago tether never worked with the clockwork mod tether app if I didn't use the UA switch, but now it does, IDK whatever, T-mobile is weird.
However, straight from the settings, WiFi or wired tether never works, with or without APN and UA change (on comp), meaning I especially wont be able to use it on my PS3 and such. Now, I'm not sure if its a hidden APN thing, IDK, though I did create a separate APN and tried that out with the stock tether in the phone and it didn't work.
Anyone know any solutions, T-mobile is pretty good lol...? Lemee say thanks in advance
(A solution i would want is to be able to use it on my PS3 again, on something where I'm not able to install a clockwork mod tether app lol, a process be done phone side to bypass...)

Bump
No help?

I don't think there is an answer to your question. You've been flagged by T-mobile. The only way to tether again is to pay for it.

Because you are using too much data. Their montly 4G plans are capped at a maximum 5GB per month, says it right on their website, after that they throttle you down to 2G speeds. They can also see the unique ip address of everything your tethering, some tethering apps say they can hide the address or at least spoof it so it looks like its coming just from the phone, but if you still use too much data your screwed.

Well the new unlimited 4g value plan is unlimited, and there is NO throttling. However, you can't tether. I was just wondering how they can tell that the data is coming from a tethered laptop and not the phone itself.

Its probably a combination between UA strings and excessive data not usual with a smartphone.

I've heard of a number ways they can do this, no one really know for sure they just know they can. One is that each device you connect has a unique identifier so they know its not your phone connecting. Another is that with TMo and AT&T in particular all the tethering apps used to use an APN just for tethering and AT&T monitors that APN for traffic to make sure you paid for it. Some wifi tethering apps try to avoid this by not using that APN. I've also read speculation that its the browsers themselves you use that give you away as they have unique identifier strings they send out with each request. This last one maybe the same thing I mentioned first, in that even the same browser on a different device will have different identifiers. So if you use chrome on the phone and on the desktop they will show up as two different devices giving you away.

The whole point of the Monthly 4G plans with the 5GB cap is to tether.

Like i said i could still tether with the clockwork mod app, so whatever its doing (im guessing adding vpn's and stuff on the computer) is working, then i set my chrome browser UA to desktop mode Nexus 4 Chrome. Sometimes if you are not using the UA string, ittl show you the tmobile page. I don't know but kudos to magenta, there method works when you actually get flagged (which im guessing not many do...)

Now Have A Mobile HotSpot Icon (Gingerbread)

I just installed the latest update and am in love with the 5 minutes I have used it. Everything seems bigger and much more pretty. Love the blue theme as well.
Anyway, I now have a "Mobile Hotspot" icon that I never had in previous android. I am on unlimited data right now from ATT grandfathered in. Can I use this hotspot that Gingerbread provided? Will I lose my unlimited data? any negative side effects? Thanks for the help!
Are you rooted?
You must have a tethering plan. For an alternative, you can use a tethering app without rooting, called pdanet. Which you can find on google, not in market. Its on sale for around $16. I love it.

I am 100% stock, no rooting or anything of the sort. My previous installment of Android 2.2 did not have any visible "Mobile Hotspot" icon that I could see within my applications list. Suddenly, this one has it.
I have been with [email protected] forever and am grandfathered in. I was under the impression that if I had a "Tethering" plan that I would lose my grandfathered status. Again, this icon appears in my applications list when I did the 160MB update to Gingerbread last night.
I dont want to use this green "Mobile Hot Spot" icon in my app list if it will change anything on my current plan or switch me out from unlimited. If it shows up in all installations of Gingerbread just for the hell of it thats fine with me, I just need to know not to touch it if its going to change things or charge me haha.

if you don't have a tethering plan and try to use it, it won't authenticate anyway so it won't work.
Your right! It did not validate. So if I find and use PDANET, I run the risk of ATT on my ass about tethering? If I did tether at all, it would only be a little.

Has this been proven? I'm assuming this is the method where you add another APN, the one that is available in gingerbreak I think, or gladroot.. one of them.
Is it known if they can tell about tethering through barncle or pdanet?

I use both and tethering never appeared on my plan. When I try the mobile hotpot app in the phone already, it says I don't have a tethering plan. So pdanet and barnacle don't trigger it. That's my theory.

With 2.3.4 you can edit the entitlement check then use the hotspot app. I have used it numerous times and nothing has changed on my unlimited plan. Checkbthe dev forums for the post on changing the entitlement check. And yes you must be rooted.

I know this is an old post just updating some account info....
If you are on the old grandfathered real Unlimited data plan, never, ever call ATT and ask them to enable mobile hotspot or tethering on your plan. ATT does not provide tethering or hotspots anymore on the enterprise unlimited data plan like they did in 2007 for PDAs.
If you ask them to do it, they will require you to change your plan to one of the two data plans that do allow wifi hotspot and tethering which are 2 and 4GB plans and depending on your usage like me will cost you, even though the low plan is half of what you are paying with the Ent Unlimited.
Its ATTs way of forcing everyone out of grandfathered plans into a new price point for them so they can make more money. Not worth it.
As stated in previous posts in this thread just change entitlement to "disabled" and be done with it, free wifi hotspot =)
And for me it is awesome....

[Q] Wifi tether uses what kind of sprint data?

I've seen the other similar threads but I couldn't find anywhere, anyone who has asked these questions specifically:
Sprint recently added a 5GB data cap to their "tethering" services that comes with the Sprint Hotspot. I understand that "handset" data however, is still to remain unlimited...
1.) So when using the Wifi tethering app from the market, which data does it use on Sprint's network? Tethering, or handset?
2.) If you're using Sprint's hotspot app - the hacked/modded versions devs have been making- which does it use?
3.) And finally, if you have a rom like SRF1.2 that bypasses proxies and does other network tweaks, which does it use with them?
My phones are below if you need to know what I'm running.

Okay good, that is my setup.
Short of torrenting pirated movies or other bandwidth-heavy activities, I don't have to worry about getting a nasty letter from them about using too much traffic then?
I normally just stream Netflix all day, check for updates on SRF1.3, and check G+ 3 or 4 times daily.
They all use the same data. Sprint just doesn't believe that a phone by itself will ever reach the 5 gb mark, and for the most part, they're right. Normal use of a phone should fall well below that mark, although video streaming could push it...
But try downloading 6 gigs on your phone each month, legitimately exceeding the 5 gig threshold without violating the new terms of service (in other words, without using any form of tethering), and I'd be willing to bet that your speed will still be throttled. You may even receive a letter about a violation, or about purchasing theory tethering plan. (Paying for their tethering doesn't count for this experiment, since it has already been established that that plan does get throttled, and it involves supplying a data connection to a device other than your phone)

But I thought Sprint was the only provider that doesn't have a fair-usage policy limiting users to 5GB a month. They are truly unlimited... (insert question mark here?)

As long as you arent abusing tethering like downloading huge torrents and using it as your main internet on 3g, you should be fine... i mean i know tons of people that posted in other threads that always go over the 5gb limit and sprint doesnt throttle or charge u.. just dont use it for torrents or online gaming via ps3 or xbox.
You should be fine if you do go over

Hopefully it stays that way - they *just* changed the terms of service within the past month, so only time will tell.
If you pay for their tethering package, then the app checks in with their network when you start it (this was the part that needed to be hacked to get the native hotspot working for free, essentially) - that would be the only way Sprint would know which data is used for tethering, and it could end up being inflated by any data use on your phone while the tether app is running (unless the app actually reports when data is being pulled for a connected device instead of the phone - but that's more bandwidth wasted...)

I really don't think Sprint cares. I had no home internet for about 2 weeks recently, so I used the tethering hack. During tha time I torrented over 30 GB of tv over 4g and never got a warning or throttling.

I had been reading from the sprint website about their unlimited plans and sprint's customer support responses to people. The results are promising, for now.
They basically said as long as network usage remains balanced between light and heavy users, everything will remain unlimited forever. (We obviously know forever means 1 or 2 years at the rate people are jumping over to the unlimited bandwagon).
Even with the iPhone users coming over, they say it's going to remain unlimited as long as not EVERYONE is being a heavy user. If everyone becomes heavy, the CEO said they will think about tackling a different approach to tiered-usage once that boat comes along, but I guess we're all okay for now.

I dont really know but i think that it just uses android's driver and permission from SU (superuser) to form itself into a wifi hotspot. For number two, if you hack you're phone, you're still going to pay for SPRINT hotspot app. However, wifi hotspot(from market) is free. I don't know number 3.. sorry :/

False. I don't pay them $30/month and I use the hacked version of the hotspot app albeit not very much. That's the whole point of hacking it, so you don't have to pay the extra $30/month.

In the future, starting a new thread instead of hijacking mine is suggested... but I'm feeling generous before I go to bed the A.M.
You simply don't start 4G until after your device is connected via wifi on 3G.
*Start wifi tether
*connect device
*Turn on 4G
In that order and it should work fine.
Try that and report your results please.

Sprint tethering

I've been tethering for a while now with my phone and I noticed that lately it seems like my internet stops working after a while. Sometimes it will let me download as much as 2GBs then it starts kicking me off minutes after I begin tethering.
Is Sprint able to see if I'm tethering now? I don't care to much either way I'm fine using my phone to download the things I need. It's just sometimes my downloads fail after reaching 100% so I like to use my PC more.
I have noticed that I've used 50GB this month .

I read recently sprint was pulling tethering apps from the market so they may be trying to weed out some in addition the recent 5GB cap on hotspot, i'm sure they are fine tuning their system to track data in different manners. Currently they cant even separate hotspot and phone data, that should serve interesting to how they implement overages.
Yeah. Eventually when all the unlimited plans are gone at least we'll know why.
Also, sprint can tell your tethering, they're just not actively doing anything about it yet. After all when you are on 3G or 4G you go through their IP gateway and they can control what you see and can tell what you're using to see it. The only way to prevent that would be through vpn and maybe some https but headers still have to go through clean.
P2P is probably the easiest to detect even if encrypted so good luck trying to get your number back after they close your account.

True, i would hope the systems are able to track it with all the tracking a smartphone is capable of especially just knowing the browser type they should be able to see who's tethering. I'm really curious to see how this plays out over the next year or two with data usage.

Don't believe anyone who says they cannot tell if your tethering. All they have to do is check what the source and destination mac address using a program such as wireshark to sniff the IP of your phone.
Also don't believe anyone who says your phone is affecting their bandwidth. Bandwidth depends on signal strength and how much bandwidth they are using on their 3g 4g frequencies they use. Its different everywhere for every tower and has to do with the type of license they were able to obtain from the fcc for the tower you are using.
As far as your question regarding sprint killing your downloads, you would need to find a way to sniff you phone's 3g/4g connection to find out whats killing the packets. i would guess that its probably an issue with the connection(s) timing out for high ping times. i don't know if there is a way to manually adjust the ttl in android.

Guess what jackass not everyone has cable availability. I live in the county and I don't have cable, or DSL available. In fact as of this year I can no longer get a phone line to my home. The only options some of us have are satellite internet or tethering.
They may be able to on a backend but sprint.com and their billing system doesn't show the difference. Currently if you call sprint and ask for your hotspots usage they cannot provide an answer.

There are means to tether when you have no options. I was pointing out the ops ignorant approach to data usage since he clearly has a different internet connection but still chooses to use the phone.

You blamed him for your data speeds. If he is causing low data speeds, then how do the people legitimately tethering not effect your speeds?

I never said I have another internet connection. I said I could simply just download the files with my phone. I preferred to use my PC instead because I can avoid having to transfer files.
Thanks for the help everyone.

Sprint would accommodate for that. But because people abuse the otherwise would be fair use type of tether system, soon people such as yourself, who can't have any other access will be either limited to a ridiculous 5GB per month or not have the ability at all.
For people like myself who ocasonally use tether without tether plan (because of root access) to check some emails/web when stranded without wifi access, Sprint may disable that all together and we'll be forced to pay the $30 per month fee for the 1 or 2 times a year of 100-200MB of data used.
That's why I can't stand people abusing it. And for the op... if you truly do not have any other means of getting a wired data line, I hope you are at least paying for it even though it may no longer be unlimited.

Obsanity, Were I can definitely understand your frustration with sprints slow network (I feel the same way), Sprint advertises unlimited data on smartphones. regardless of him paying for tethering (which he should pay for), data is data, and its all 1's and 0's and therefor is a mute point. People that tether without paying for it are not cause of slow data, however they will be the cause of tiered data plans. Until that happens chill out and relax. If you have a signal , -60db or better, then call sprint and have them take a look at the tower. if they insist its your phone, have them replace it. if they won't look at the tower, thank them for their time and file a complaint with the fcc.

4.3 Tethering on T-Mobile

Has anyone noticed difficulties with wifi tethering on tmobile since update 4.3?
I was able to bypass the T-Mobile hotspot plan before the update (rooted) using pdanet+ but since updating to 4.3 it takes me right to the tmobile hotspot page informing me that i dont have the feature on my plan.
I also tried smart wifi tether but that gave me the same issue.
Has tmobile just gotten wise to all of the wifi tethering or do the apps just not have it working correctly on 4.3?
has anyone noticed what.. that tmobile has caught on to your theft?
they want everyone to switch to their new plans, the new data packages all include tethering. they all include unlimited tethering, except the completely unlimited high speed data package includes 500mb(but can buy more). if you are tethering another device, they arent counting it towards tethering, laptops/desktops they do.

That didnt really answer my question. Plenty of people use rooted phones with tethering apps to bypass carriers outrageous fees for the service. I had it working fine on 4.2.2 but since I updated to 4.3, the same setup i was previously using is now bringing me right to the carrier sign up page. Which means it is no longer working as intended. I was curious about the cause of this and if there was any way to get it working again.

I can usb tether with pdanet+ but it definitely seems buggier than it used to be, and wifi tethering is way more useful.
I use a Google chrome extension and it works

I can not tether on paranoid android or the latest vanir nightly. I'm on the T-Mobile $70 unlimited everything plan. Tethering works fine on all ROMs but these two.

Hi, i not agree that this is a theft.Tethering option is provided from google the same way as blackberry os ,when i had blackberry 9700 there was nothing that says tethering plan or something. There was even an option to dial from windows connection for modems with some combination of digits and these #*.Now i am not even trying to find a loophole .Nexus is with non tmobile software so the first problem is resolved, and second, guys on ubuntu there is nothing like tmobile upsell page, your connection does not being rooted to their transparent proxy witch actualy detects windows , and shows the upsell page.If you want free legal (without modification anything on the phone or pc) yeah you need ubuntu and chrome, opera though doesn't work so this browser is dead to me hahah.Basically when i got my nexus i just connected it with usb to tether and everything was working. And t mobile has enough bandwith megahertz to handle heavy users like me , i do around 250 gb per month. And if you live alone u can cut your home internet.Well if i was rich like most americans i was going to think like you probably haha

Hi i think you were able to tether on 4.2.2 because unlimited data now has 500 mb tethering, so probably at the time u upgrade android, you already used them.Nothing wrong with stock 4.3, seriously.

i agree with you. the option to tether is free to use, its provided by the phone default. but, you are using tmobiles service which is not free. your ability to tether is free, but the right to use tmobiles services while tethered is not free, and we are obliged to follow their rules(legally), or they can and will stop their service.
imagine buying a car, it has an engine, wheels, everything needed to drive. but, even though you can freely drive, you have to purchase gas. you arent entitled to the gas free, even though the car has the ability to drive included.
most americans rich? what world are you living in? its definitely not reality for sure..
Ok u got me, but i would change my statement to "if i was getting 50-60k"..Because i am democrat i would say the only unlimited wireless super fast internet for $20 in the world(checked japan, south Korea, England, nobody has that ), well i will take advantage of it , and even with a risk t mobile makes some new firewall for linux, i still share the infh and somehow thats make me feel " wow i have the fastest wireless internet in the world, at least".Its another reality i am aware...

i make around $50000 a year, which sounds like a lot. but.. in live in nyc, where the cost of living is much more than everywhere else in the US. so my 50000 has a realistic value of about 25000-30000 if you compare it to other US cities, which is nothing. i live paycheck to paycheck, and have a hard time filling my needs.
$20 internet? i pay 50+20(unlimited+tax) so it turns out to be around $82.
Yeah i even want to get off these 500 min for $35,but its not posible, don't know how it is in NY but i can give u an example the gasoline here in san francisco region is the most expensive. And i am getting lower than nothing.Even i'm filing for disability welfare i worked 7 years with no vacation, paying taxes on instalments for 2008-2012 and i know that nothing is gonna change so lets get some money from the best country in the world. My disability its not even on the list in my country.Dont go there for vacation its gonna be the worst ever vacation , Bulgaria.

yea, its expensive in san fran also, i have family there. and im in the same boat, last week long vacation was in 2006.
sure, we might make more money in the US, but the cost of living is very expensive too(in big cities, less in the country. less pay in the country as well). i know movies/tv show how great we live in the us, but for the majority of people here its not realistic, its a fantasy.

Maybe its just a flaw in PA? I would hope that gets updated soon

I'm on T-Mobile and was able to tether my wife's phone via WiFi, my tablet via Bluetooth and my laptop via usb while on PA and CM (both 4.3 and not at the same time) with no problems. I'm using one of the hybrid kernels. I'm also using T-Mobile's new plan with 2.5GB of data.

So I was in the PA thread over in the original development section and i searched for the hotspot issue. It seems that other people are also having issues using a hotspot on tmobile while on the rom. I saw a post that said some people have the issue and some dont. However it was hard to see if it ever got resolved because that thread is an absolute zoo. I was gonna post a question about it and how it might be resolved but I dont have enough posts to be allowed in the development section.
Demonic, it seems like you were one of the lucky ones that it happens to work for on. See i can usb tether, but wifi hotspot will just redirect to a tmobile webpage no matter if its a phone or a laptop thats connected to it.

Im using all the stock settings, i never modified anything.
-I was on stock android, got the OTA for 4.3
-Then rooted and flashed PA and their gapps
-havent modified any apn settings with the exception of the "use defaults" option to reset my connection (but i dont believe that changes anything)
My tmo plan is the 30 dollar prepaid with 100 minutes and 5gb of 4g (it worked fine on this plan before on rooted 4.2.2 but i was not on PA)

T-Mobile Tethering "Block"

I was wondering if anyone has found a way to block T-Mobile from seeing that you're tethering on your plan?
I have the 500mb tethering... but I usually go way over that. Coming from the GNex on Verizon all the custom roms made it so Verizon couldn't see you were tethering. I usually just tether my Nexus 10 when I'm out and about. And it always shows up on my bill that I used X amount of tethering data.
So, is there a way to get around this?

I have the $30, 5GB prepaid plan on T-Mobile, without any additional tethering services enabled. I've done quite a bit of bluetooth tethering to my Nexus 7 and haven't heard anything about it from T-Mobile. So there's one option for you, if you're willing to switch to prepaid.
Well try to not go over or buy more data. Or get the prepaid $70 unlimited plan.
sent from xda premium app
Well I had to deal with his a lot a few months ago when I use to tether.
When you tether to your laptop. The speed of loading/browser/youtube is a lot quicker than the phone. So they'll be able to detect it especially if you youtube a lot. It resets at the end of your cycle. Sometimes they catch you sometimes they dont.
I've gone a month without being caught and sometimes as little as 5-10 minutes they would block me.
Foxfi app
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
The apps in google play like foxfi don't hide tether usage from T-Mobile. They detect the user agent. So if your tethering to a computer, for example, Mozilla Firefox browser has an add-on to change the user agent. You have to change it to Android. So it looks like an Android is using the data, and not a laptop. That's the only way they can't detect it now.
I have T-Mobile and they're nazis about tethering.

Ehhh....your most likely right. I've only HEARD it's harder to get around tethering blocks with T-Mobile than it is with AT&T or other carriers. I know T-Mobile is cracking down a lot though. But
Thanks everyone for your input. Kinda sucks there's no way to really get around that.

no it IS possible. read my first post. Change the user agent on the computer, or whatever your tethering to. Mozilla has a user agent switcher, its an add on. change your laptops user agent to "android". or iphone if that's what you have service through. I use this quite a bit to tether to my laptop, and haven't had a problem once.

near the end of my last billing cycle i was using the android user agent on chrome, and they actually caught me. but the funny thing(more annoying than funny ) is that for three days in a row after, between 11pm and 1am, my phones browser would start redirecting me to their wireless hotspot landing page, and all my apps would stop working, the play store and other apps that used data. id even see the wireless hotspot landing page in some other apps. i had to call tmobile every time, and have them reset my data connection.

This. They will associate that user-agent string as your computer. Congrats, your phone is now a computer . I've heard of people having a similar problem when using a native torrent client on android. Can't remember if T-Mobile was the provider or not.
I left AT&T after 13+ years because of their stance on tethering/data limits. (I was an AT&T member before the Cingular merger.) After ALWAYS buying my devices 2nd hand so I could stay on my truly unlimited data plan, they still sent me a letter saying I'm using too much data, and that I'm tethering (even months when I wouldn't tether)
Came to T-Mobile 2 years ago and now I have real unlimited (999gb a month) but I haven't tested out the tethering yet, since I only use my phone. (They dont offer tethering in the unlimited plan) No tablet, laptop has been turned off for about a year. My desktop is a beast and I have fast cable at home, so no need.
Has anyone tried pdanet? I know they had a hide tethering feature. No idea how well it works.
