4.3 Tethering on T-Mobile - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone noticed difficulties with wifi tethering on tmobile since update 4.3?
I was able to bypass the T-Mobile hotspot plan before the update (rooted) using pdanet+ but since updating to 4.3 it takes me right to the tmobile hotspot page informing me that i dont have the feature on my plan.
I also tried smart wifi tether but that gave me the same issue.
Has tmobile just gotten wise to all of the wifi tethering or do the apps just not have it working correctly on 4.3?

has anyone noticed what.. that tmobile has caught on to your theft?
they want everyone to switch to their new plans, the new data packages all include tethering. they all include unlimited tethering, except the completely unlimited high speed data package includes 500mb(but can buy more). if you are tethering another device, they arent counting it towards tethering, laptops/desktops they do.

That didnt really answer my question. Plenty of people use rooted phones with tethering apps to bypass carriers outrageous fees for the service. I had it working fine on 4.2.2 but since I updated to 4.3, the same setup i was previously using is now bringing me right to the carrier sign up page. Which means it is no longer working as intended. I was curious about the cause of this and if there was any way to get it working again.

I can usb tether with pdanet+ but it definitely seems buggier than it used to be, and wifi tethering is way more useful.

I use a Google chrome extension and it works

I can not tether on paranoid android or the latest vanir nightly. I'm on the T-Mobile $70 unlimited everything plan. Tethering works fine on all ROMs but these two.

Hi, i not agree that this is a theft.Tethering option is provided from google the same way as blackberry os ,when i had blackberry 9700 there was nothing that says tethering plan or something. There was even an option to dial from windows connection for modems with some combination of digits and these #*.Now i am not even trying to find a loophole .Nexus is with non tmobile software so the first problem is resolved, and second, guys on ubuntu there is nothing like tmobile upsell page, your connection does not being rooted to their transparent proxy witch actualy detects windows , and shows the upsell page.If you want free legal (without modification anything on the phone or pc) yeah you need ubuntu and chrome, opera though doesn't work so this browser is dead to me hahah.Basically when i got my nexus i just connected it with usb to tether and everything was working. And t mobile has enough bandwith megahertz to handle heavy users like me , i do around 250 gb per month. And if you live alone u can cut your home internet.Well if i was rich like most americans i was going to think like you probably haha

Hi i think you were able to tether on 4.2.2 because unlimited data now has 500 mb tethering, so probably at the time u upgrade android, you already used them.Nothing wrong with stock 4.3, seriously.

i agree with you. the option to tether is free to use, its provided by the phone default. but, you are using tmobiles service which is not free. your ability to tether is free, but the right to use tmobiles services while tethered is not free, and we are obliged to follow their rules(legally), or they can and will stop their service.
imagine buying a car, it has an engine, wheels, everything needed to drive. but, even though you can freely drive, you have to purchase gas. you arent entitled to the gas free, even though the car has the ability to drive included.
most americans rich? what world are you living in? its definitely not reality for sure..

Ok u got me, but i would change my statement to "if i was getting 50-60k"..Because i am democrat i would say the only unlimited wireless super fast internet for $20 in the world(checked japan, south Korea, England, nobody has that ), well i will take advantage of it , and even with a risk t mobile makes some new firewall for linux, i still share the infh and somehow thats make me feel " wow i have the fastest wireless internet in the world, at least".Its another reality i am aware...

i make around $50000 a year, which sounds like a lot. but.. in live in nyc, where the cost of living is much more than everywhere else in the US. so my 50000 has a realistic value of about 25000-30000 if you compare it to other US cities, which is nothing. i live paycheck to paycheck, and have a hard time filling my needs.
$20 internet? i pay 50+20(unlimited+tax) so it turns out to be around $82.

Yeah i even want to get off these 500 min for $35,but its not posible, don't know how it is in NY but i can give u an example the gasoline here in san francisco region is the most expensive. And i am getting lower than nothing.Even i'm filing for disability welfare i worked 7 years with no vacation, paying taxes on instalments for 2008-2012 and i know that nothing is gonna change so lets get some money from the best country in the world. My disability its not even on the list in my country.Dont go there for vacation its gonna be the worst ever vacation , Bulgaria.

yea, its expensive in san fran also, i have family there. and im in the same boat, last week long vacation was in 2006.
sure, we might make more money in the US, but the cost of living is very expensive too(in big cities, less in the country. less pay in the country as well). i know movies/tv show how great we live in the us, but for the majority of people here its not realistic, its a fantasy.

I also can not tether on vanir nightlies, So far only paranoid and vanir send you to tmobiles website.

I'm on T-Mobile and was able to tether my wife's phone via WiFi, my tablet via Bluetooth and my laptop via usb while on PA and CM (both 4.3 and not at the same time) with no problems. I'm using one of the hybrid kernels. I'm also using T-Mobile's new plan with 2.5GB of data.

So I was in the PA thread over in the original development section and i searched for the hotspot issue. It seems that other people are also having issues using a hotspot on tmobile while on the rom. I saw a post that said some people have the issue and some dont. However it was hard to see if it ever got resolved because that thread is an absolute zoo. I was gonna post a question about it and how it might be resolved but I dont have enough posts to be allowed in the development section.
Demonic, it seems like you were one of the lucky ones that it happens to work for on. See i can usb tether, but wifi hotspot will just redirect to a tmobile webpage no matter if its a phone or a laptop thats connected to it.

Im using all the stock settings, i never modified anything.
-I was on stock android, got the OTA for 4.3
-Then rooted and flashed PA and their gapps
-havent modified any apn settings with the exception of the "use defaults" option to reset my connection (but i dont believe that changes anything)
My tmo plan is the 30 dollar prepaid with 100 minutes and 5gb of 4g (it worked fine on this plan before on rooted 4.2.2 but i was not on PA)

They need to let you know they are changing your plan before they do so. I have been tethering with my phone for years now and ATT has never said anything to and I think it has to do with the amount of traffic. If they see a huge spike of activity and then they look at where that traffic is coming from and they see that you are connecting to battle net then they will know something is up(i know the traffic is not coming from battle net). What I am trying to say is do it within reason, as my guess is the people that they are catching are using well over 2GB a month.
I hope a mod moves this soon... But I heard of at least one person getting nailed with usage <1GB.
i used to tether my blackberry to my ipod touch forever and att has never said anything, i used to use it on my netbook when i went to school too. this was bluetoothtethering. but im think it has more to do with what a user is doing/amount of traffic they are using etc. as for the <gb guy, that may have been a random check or something else. but tethering to play online gaming you will surely get naildd... so use at your own risk knowing the consequences if they/when they find out
I've been tethering for years. I regularly go over 5gb's and at&t has never said anything. I am grandfathered in on the unlimited tho, and I normally only use it for tethering my tablet which is Android so it probably looks as tho it's just coming from my phone. Oh and occasional tethering to my Xbox when my DSL drops out. Lol.

I believe it has to do with the internet stack in the phone. Seen an article a while back on this. If you use a cooked rom they will know if it is based on the stock kernal and rom. If you use something like cyanogenmod they shouldn't ever find out. I think I seen this explanation with verizon tethering and how to get around it.

but that wouldnt explain how i could tether with my blackberry to computers and ipods with no ATT wrath, and i know these are android phones but tethering is tethering..right?
How AT&T can find out?
About four months ago I received a txt from AT&T thanking me for enjoying my trial period of tethering for my iPhone and that a tethering package would automatically be on my next bill. The forum I was on (don't remember where) simply stated that all I had to do was go into an AT&T store and demand that I NOT be placed on the tethering plan. I did that and after a quick phone call from the store to a CSR they pulled it off but with a warning. They said that if tethering activity was monitored again that they would add it back and I couldn't remove it (yeah right).
I was using the MyWi app from Cydia that works perfectly. I used it for nearly two years with no issue. However, the PDANet Cydia app has a "Hide Tethering" option in the program that always made me curious. What is it hiding? MyWi doesn't have that option.
I also used a Windows Mobile phone prior to that with ICS installed and regularly tethered to that as well. I think that ROM was a NotaTreoFan ROM most of the time and then Energy.
I would love the option of adding tethering to my SGS2 but I refuse to pay for a tethering plan. I'm still grandfathered into unlimited data.
Thoughts?

They shouldn't notice anything. I have used barnacle tether on T-Mobile and sprint. So both sim and cdma for a while now. And so far nothing. I'm pretty sure barnacle tether just uses your mobile network and shows up as nothing more than data usage. Bc when using the built in carrier tethering they see the app in use and send that data back. I check my tether stats and network stats and it just shows up as network use. I think you will be fine

[Q] Wifi tether uses what kind of sprint data?

I've seen the other similar threads but I couldn't find anywhere, anyone who has asked these questions specifically:
Sprint recently added a 5GB data cap to their "tethering" services that comes with the Sprint Hotspot. I understand that "handset" data however, is still to remain unlimited...
1.) So when using the Wifi tethering app from the market, which data does it use on Sprint's network? Tethering, or handset?
2.) If you're using Sprint's hotspot app - the hacked/modded versions devs have been making- which does it use?
3.) And finally, if you have a rom like SRF1.2 that bypasses proxies and does other network tweaks, which does it use with them?
My phones are below if you need to know what I'm running.

Okay good, that is my setup.
Short of torrenting pirated movies or other bandwidth-heavy activities, I don't have to worry about getting a nasty letter from them about using too much traffic then?
I normally just stream Netflix all day, check for updates on SRF1.3, and check G+ 3 or 4 times daily.
They all use the same data. Sprint just doesn't believe that a phone by itself will ever reach the 5 gb mark, and for the most part, they're right. Normal use of a phone should fall well below that mark, although video streaming could push it...
But try downloading 6 gigs on your phone each month, legitimately exceeding the 5 gig threshold without violating the new terms of service (in other words, without using any form of tethering), and I'd be willing to bet that your speed will still be throttled. You may even receive a letter about a violation, or about purchasing theory tethering plan. (Paying for their tethering doesn't count for this experiment, since it has already been established that that plan does get throttled, and it involves supplying a data connection to a device other than your phone)

But I thought Sprint was the only provider that doesn't have a fair-usage policy limiting users to 5GB a month. They are truly unlimited... (insert question mark here?)

As long as you arent abusing tethering like downloading huge torrents and using it as your main internet on 3g, you should be fine... i mean i know tons of people that posted in other threads that always go over the 5gb limit and sprint doesnt throttle or charge u.. just dont use it for torrents or online gaming via ps3 or xbox.
You should be fine if you do go over

Hopefully it stays that way - they *just* changed the terms of service within the past month, so only time will tell.
If you pay for their tethering package, then the app checks in with their network when you start it (this was the part that needed to be hacked to get the native hotspot working for free, essentially) - that would be the only way Sprint would know which data is used for tethering, and it could end up being inflated by any data use on your phone while the tether app is running (unless the app actually reports when data is being pulled for a connected device instead of the phone - but that's more bandwidth wasted...)

I really don't think Sprint cares. I had no home internet for about 2 weeks recently, so I used the tethering hack. During tha time I torrented over 30 GB of tv over 4g and never got a warning or throttling.

I had been reading from the sprint website about their unlimited plans and sprint's customer support responses to people. The results are promising, for now.
They basically said as long as network usage remains balanced between light and heavy users, everything will remain unlimited forever. (We obviously know forever means 1 or 2 years at the rate people are jumping over to the unlimited bandwagon).
Even with the iPhone users coming over, they say it's going to remain unlimited as long as not EVERYONE is being a heavy user. If everyone becomes heavy, the CEO said they will think about tackling a different approach to tiered-usage once that boat comes along, but I guess we're all okay for now.

I dont really know but i think that it just uses android's driver and permission from SU (superuser) to form itself into a wifi hotspot. For number two, if you hack you're phone, you're still going to pay for SPRINT hotspot app. However, wifi hotspot(from market) is free. I don't know number 3.. sorry :/

False. I don't pay them $30/month and I use the hacked version of the hotspot app albeit not very much. That's the whole point of hacking it, so you don't have to pay the extra $30/month.

In the future, starting a new thread instead of hijacking mine is suggested... but I'm feeling generous before I go to bed the A.M.
You simply don't start 4G until after your device is connected via wifi on 3G.
*Start wifi tether
*connect device
*Turn on 4G
In that order and it should work fine.
Try that and report your results please.

Hmmm, sorry that didn't work. Please let me know your findings then so I have another solution to add for future peeps with such an issue.

Wifi tethering and T Mobile txt message about upsell to mobile hotspot plan.

I'm currently using the stock rom with root GS 2 w/2.3.6 . The only thing I did is remove most of the bloat ware and uninstall the wifi tethering manager app that blocks the use of it without a hot spot data plan. I was using my wifi hotspot and all the suddenly got a txt message about upsell to hot spot plan if not my tethering will be block. As anybody experience this. I came from a Vibrant and never got this txt message. Only once did I go over the 5gb data cap with a G2 a while back. I'm under the old unlimited data plan ( 5gb soft cap). With the Vibrant I was using a Team Whiskey rom not the stock rom. Do you think it could be the stock rom or just tmobile being more smart about detecting this now.

I've never had this problem, I also have the 5gb plan. When I have used the tether and hotspot its been on a custom rom. I don't think the rom matters though.

Been using a custom ROM from day one incl. freezing/uninstalling the bloatware [presumably] associated w/tethering and used to get the same msgs. but didn't see them for a couple weeks. Just this morning got a new upsell msg., so they may have figured out a way around.
I'm only tethering to check work e-mail and that's through VPN, so that may have something to do with it.
I tether everyday, never had this txt message.with stock rooted or custom
From a glaxay better than yours.
I got this message once or twice on my vibrant. I was using my tether a lot and for heavy tasks though.
dont use internet explorer, use firefox. i found out they can detected if you use Internet explorer
Thanks seems to be IE and T Mobile doing a better job at catching it.

I hope Tmo doesn't find a day to block it. I have no ethical qualms tethering without a plan. Tmo has no business telling me through what medium and velocity I go through my 5gb every month.

I use stock rom and I tether my phone to my galay tab and I never received any text msg from Tmobile. My phone is rooted and I have deleted tether management app. Also I use Open Garden Wifi tether app from market. From what I understand, it enables the build in tether but without sending a msg to Tmobile.
All you smart people, please correct me if I am wrong.
I have been using Open Garden WIFI Tether for almost a week without any problems. I just leave it open while driving. My son access it with his IPod Touch and my daughter with rooted NOOK Tablet. So far so good.
Tmo rep here. The tethering plan has always been $15 but Tmo has never really enforced it. They have recently started preventing tethering from working on devices but it is still pretty hit or miss. On my coworker's stock Amaze she is getting blocked even on the employee data plan but on my GS2 I have never been restricted but I've always been rooted.
Starting on the 25th of this month, they will be adding free tethering to 5GB data plans so if you do a a 5 gig plan, just have Tmo update the data feature and you should have no problem tethering. If you are just on a 2GB plan, you should be fine if you are rooted.

We all know AT&T has some epic systems setup to prevent tethering, at least for the iPhones.

Just called in (had to call in and ask for cancellations to even speak to anyone) the idiot I spoke to never heard of this promotion. Never had a tethering problem until yesterday when I tried it after reading this thread. I never had a problem with my N1 or Sensation. I really hate having to talk to people at Tmo. 90% of the time they are so stupid I'm ready to cancel my contract. I guess I will root and axe the wifi mgmt app and see if it works. If I have to call those idiots again I may be moving to Sprint.
From the wording of the TMO News document picture
http://www.tmonews.com/2012/01/t-mobile-launching-new-hush-hush-promotional-plans-on-january-25th/
it looks like you have to be upgrading to 5gb or 10gb to get this. The person I spoke to today said they always charge for tethering. Just like the dozen people I spoke with 6 months ago told me they always charge for wifi calling and there was no $20 5gb preferred plan. Not sure if dealing with these people is worth the money saved. smh
i juts called to ask about a thing on my bill and they offered me the upgrade to the 5gb for an extra 10 dollars per month, i dont really tether and im always either at my home wifi or my work's wifi, but im reeeally starting to think about sprint here, the problem is i travel overseas and i need a gsm phone.
if not ill switch to simple mobile, a friend has it and he has had no problems so far with it with international calling and 4g for 60 bucks i can be happy with that price, i would have to ask about the quality of the service though and get the unlock code for my phone first.

4.4 and wifi Tethering [TMOBILE]

I realize I may have been getting away with something for a long time that may just have caught up with me BUT I'd like it to keep going. For years with my Nexus phones, their wifi Tethering has been my only home internet using between 20gig and up to 60gig per month. This has never caused an issue on my unlimited plan until I upgraded to kitkat, they immediately texted me and warned I was at 4gig, then shut be off at 4.5gig . Any thoughts on how to regain?

It would help to know which plan you are on. T mobile has unlimited data in different tiers, where you only get high speed for say.. 2.5, 4.5, or 5 gigs.

I believe the op is talking about how T-Mobile can now flag tethering on kit kat. I have the same issue and would like to know if there is a way around this on kk.

Two things. Well, three.
First of all, T-Mobile is supposed to 'flag' you for tethering if you did not pay for it, or if your plan does not have tethering. Secondly, T-Mobile's data plan typically comes in tiers, unless, you actually pay for 'unlimited 4g'.
Third: Read through this thread for the 'fix':
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47134941
Android geniuses of the world, we need you. I have truly unlimited (Tmo US) and use on average 75-100gig a month via my N4 and maybe a gig via tether through my other devices (atleast until KitKat). That one gig may not seem like much in comparison though it was a great luxury to me. Now I can't tether unless I want to root which I most definitely do not.
I, for one, am willing to throw in $20 to anyone who can provide a fix in regaining tether via N4 KitKat completely stock unrooted.

Enabling the Tethering App (hotspot) on Verizon Galaxy s5

Has anyone figured out the best way to enable the wifi tethering capability?
I know on the s4, all the roms came out with this feature, it seems the s5 is still not rooted yet, what is everyone using, exploit or app?
this has been posted, but the best way to accomplish this right now without root is with FoxFi ( paid as far as i know and use now ) .. then USB or Bluetooth tether. you can then while tethered activate "wifi share" for your wifi devices. ..... if there is another method please someone post it!
verizon s5 are not allowed to do it..
Wow, what in the world is going on here...
Verizon may have made their last move. I just bought my phone with new 2 year contract, can i return and cancel my contract within a certain time period or am I inevitably effed?
I can not and will not put up with anymore of big Red's nazi ways, I am paying for a service and at the price im paying more than justifies my using of said service in any and every way that i want. If this does not get resolved soon, its a deal breaker for me and verizon. Not that it will make any difference...
and I hate that it would essentially make me move to a lesser carrier with less coverage and internet speed, but big red is starting to do that guv'mint thinking and i dont like where this is headed.

donkey poo!!!
I require a real wifi tether, usb and bluetooth are too restrictive and time consuming.
I hope a few of the more experienced devs can chime in on whether this is something to wait for or just return/sell the device immediately?

If you have one of their new plans which I'm assuming you do since you upgraded, you absolutely can use native hotspot. I ran it yesterday. You have to turn it on via settings instead of the traditional way of tapping the Wi-Fi app.

I gave up the unlimited data plan and went with the Share Everything with 6gb of data. I did an analysis of my data usage for the past year and found that I never used more than 2gb a month. The unlimited talk and text is more important to me than unlimited data. Although I use the web quite a bit on the phone, I use wifi at home and at work, so it limits my 4G data usage substantially.
Verizon will eventually find a way to eliminate unlimited data altogether, or with some of the new Internet legislation being pushed throttle the bandwidth to the point that it's useless.
I don't understand what people are doing to use 30gb a month or higher unless you are using the plan as your home ISP service connecting multiple devices, or streaming movies all day long.

I have Verizon Home Fusion for home internet and I do not have wifi at work. Largest amount of data I can subscribe to per month is 30GB/month, for my home. I'm too far off the road for cable, DSL, and I didn't want Satellite (which still has limits).
I'm grandfathered into unlimited. I use about 30 GB a month tethering, mostly updates for the XBOX One, downloading stuff from the usenet, streaming Netflix or HBO Go to my iPad when I'm at my camper, which is in the woods.
I hope you have an understanding now of how someone can use 30 GB per month.
On an average month, prior to acquiring my GS5, I was using about 45gb of data. That's web surfing, PC and Xbox 360 gaming, and streaming videos. On HEAVY months, I was up around 75gb of data used. My lightest month to date of data usage was 29gb of data. No way in heck I am giving up my unlimited when I have no home landline internet.. This IS my salvation.
Well in response to the OP and to others who may be confused, WIFI tether (as well as bluetooth and usb) is built in and available as long as you have the share everything plan. Until we get root there will be no native wifi hack. I've been told a talented dev has an s5 in hand, i bet it wont be too long until root is achieved, after which native hacks will be forthcoming
It takes time, has anyone here had the s4 before the s5? Do you recommend me to get the s4 or s5? I'm looking to upgrade but I have to pay full price for the phone because I use about 100 gb every month, the only two things that make me doubt is that wifi tether is not posible yet and since I eat my fingernails I can't open the usb with my fingers on the S5 lmao

Thanks for your reply but I need to activate on the unlimited plan and although when I'm home I don't use that much but when traveling it sure is much cheaper than paying 7-20 bucks a day for WiFi access in some places.... not having root is no good in this particular case especially because I rely on it for work and has never been an issue until now. And giving more money to Verizon is not an options unlimited is already 125 per month

Suggestion
To kprice8
What I would do if I were you. Put your 4G SIM card back in your old device until root becomes available. That way you have the Wifi Tether and can use your Unlimited data. And at the same time you can use your S5 for all your apps and such. But use the old device for calling and texting. Just my suggestion. You are lucky, I would never give up that unlimited plan. And these devs are extremely clever you'll have Wifi Tethering on your S5 in no time.
