Is gorilla glass stronger than a typical phone screen? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Xperia Play scratched quite badly, I was wondering whether gorilla glass was stronger than the plastic screens in older phones. Cheers.

Phones don't have plastic screens... But yes it's supposed to be stronger

My Sensation, with gorilla glass, went about a year in my pocket with change/keys/etc. and there are a few mm scratches but for the most part it held up really well. I'm definitely going sans screen protector with my N4.

I don't know...my G1 got pretty scratched up. Then had a screen protector on all phones after that other than my Galaxy SII, which did well. But then again I only had that phone a couple months.

The G1 was HTC's first real smartphone

I have been using the Galaxy S for two years, this phone has Gorilla Glass, but first version. And it has absolutely no scratches on the screen.
My phone had a bumper instead of a case or similar to cover it, so I can say the Gorilla Glass does a good work preventing scratches.

Does Vibrant really have gorilla glass or it only Euro Galaxy S?

Hello Everyone.
I saw a a video proving that galaxy s has a gorilla glass but that was the internation version not the vibrant!
Is there any official news that T-mobile vibrant has the same glass?
Because a lot of people assume vibrant does beacause it looks similar in design. Similar doesnt mean anything! Euro galaxy has a front cam while vibrant doesnt.
Can anyone confirm that vibrant has the gorilla glass or doesnt?
Because I applied a t-mobile screen protector and its very poor quality makes the screen look very grainy!
Thanx to all!

I've seen this discussed many times before, no one ever comes to a definitive conclusion though. When the Evo was released, HTC reps confirmed it most certainly did NOT have Gorilla Glass, and many people have had minor scratching which backs that up.
Maybe it's a change affecting later revisions?

Yeah. I don't know what they're smoking over at Corning (lot's of farm country around Corning NY so you never know what they might be growing). Don't know why the EVO is listed but I'm 99.99% sure it doesn't have Gorilla Glass. I know the Epic, Droid, and Droid X do and I'm pretty sure the Incredible does but not the EVO. I've played around with all 4 of those phones and the screen feels different that the EVO.

I second this, My boss has a Droid X. The glass feels totally different. I agree it is more resistent to finger prints. I LOVE the feel of the evo screen, however I can't use it w/o screen protector as if you have a bit of grit on your finger it will scratch the screen.
as stated....gorilla glass my ass
Maybe the newer models do. On my launch evo I used a screen protector. I have a rev 3 now and haven't had a screen protector for about 5 months. I work in the construction field and I only have one minor scratch.

The resistance to fingerprinting is probably because of an oleophobic coating like that on the (ahem) iPhone4. The glass itself shouldn't have a great difference in terms of tactile feel from any other smooth, thin glass. And I don't think Gorilla Glass is natively anti-skin oil.
As for breakage, Gorilla Glass will break too, especially on drops where one corner impacts the ground. Seen it happen with an iP4. Flat-face drops, drops where a side hits flush, and bending (torsion) are much better protected by GG than other types.
No way does it have Gorilla glass. I got my first scratch on it the other day, a minor one but dammit it's still there.
Everyone else email them and ask , I did. I would love to put this dog to sleep, regardless of if it does or not. For the record I think it infact does.
[email protected]
And for all of you who don't believe it is because it scratched, no one said gorilla glass is unbreakable, can't scratch bomb proof ****. It's name is gorilla glass and yes it is supposed to be stronger than regular glass. That's it....
I checked their site a few months ago and it wasn't listed. Either newer batches have it, or perhaps the 3d will. Hoping it will have it.

the gorilla glass they use for sunrooms and stuff can be hit with a hammer and not break. my sisters boyfriend threw his g2 and shattered his screen and my sister dropped hers and now theres a crack going across the screen about 2/3 of the way down. i never got around to buying any screen protectors for mine but there are only one or two very minor scratches on the screen itself. i was hoping gorilla glass would mean the screen would be a lot harder to break, but apparently thats not the case.

How do you know every phone (I assume you mean "every G2") has Gorilla Glass? Just because Corning lists the G2 on their website as having GG does not guarantee that every G2 has it. HTC is free to switch materials whenever they want. In fact, they probably reserve the right to change whatever specs of the phone they want, without notice (if they even listed GG in the specs, which they do not). But you are probably right in that many high-end smartphones are using GG these days, so HTC is pretty likely to stick with it for all the G2's.
If you read the older Gorilla Glass thread I posted above, you will see there are other users that scratched the screen with normal use. GG is advertised as being "highly damage resistant", and its harder to scratch than "conventional" glass, but you can still scratch it.

I believe that GG was originally developed for helicopter windshields. But the thickness of those and the other uses (like you mentioned) are probably a lot thicker than the type used for smartphones. The GG surface treatment greatly increases the toughness of the glass, but its thickness will still be a factor. There were reports of iPhone 4 GG breaking the first week the phone was released, just from being dropped. While GG is pretty impressive, you can't take for granted its not going to break.
Yeah that's true. I've been pretty lucky so far with phone screens so far. And I probably shouldn't have said/typed that.

sorry if you interpreted my response as an insult, it wasnt meant like that.
but basically, from my experience with cars and computer parts... who cares what branding it has? who cares if its branded as gorilla glass or branded as hardened glass? if its still tough enough to be scratch resistant and still does the job, then does it really matter whether its branded or not?
my galaxy note screen has no scratches on it. i kept it in the same pocket as my keys as well until i got my flip cover a week ago. still no scratches. this was before my screen protectors arrived.
The scratches are tiny but clearly visible. Considering I haven't haven't abused it all and my old inspire 4g had no scratches and was abused I think this glass isn't as good and isn't gorilla at all.

GG is scratch RESISTANT. Not scratch PROOF. Stop getting your panties in a bunch. It got scratched because it came into contact with something hard enough to scratch it. Who's fault it that? There is a fundamental difference between 'scratch proof' and 'scratch immune'
As posted by few others
1. Gorilla Glass can get scratches
2. Corning's patent ran out on gorilla glass quite some time ago and just about anyone capable of making one can make one
3. Corning and Samsung has a joint venture together that specializes this under scp.samsung.com and may not be using "Gorilla Glass" label

But whatever. Gorilla Glass isn't the end all be all. A grain of sand and it scratches like any 'ol screen.
Just be careful and your screen should be good, regardless of what type it is.

Do I have Gorilla Glass 2 on the front?

I have bought phone 3 months ago. IT felt on the street once - like a meter high from my hand. I got a break glass on the front in the corner. Everyhting is working - just a small crack. But the back is in one piece. That's is why I want to ask you - Nexus 4 owners - how to check if my phone have the Gorilla Glass 2 on the front?
I have checked the box, and quick start guide - no information about it. Also warranty does not have that information ?
Gorilla Street 3 breaks Gorilla Glass 2
Gorilla glass doesn't advertise shatter proof. Neither does gorilla glass 3 and 4 probably won't either. They advertise SCRATCH RESISTANCE. So if you drop your phone thinking it won't break because of gorilla glass, think again.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion. No one is trolling .. my screen is littered with scratches. No one is arguing or making any kind of insinuations that the N4 sucks.. but that many people have not had "good' experiences with Gorilla Glass.
Take your shatty internet tough guy attitude else where ...

Coming from the guy telling everyone has an extreme "placebo effect contagion" over ART because according to you its nothing more than a switch on android.
Like I said trolling is easy to spot. Specially when the majority of the post are nothing but complaining.
I'm doing feeding you.

I'm a carpenter so my phone is exposed to dust and random debris in my pocket. I use a simple no name flipcover and I must say thus far its the most resisting phone I owned. Not a single scratch or dent.
To repeat it again. Every glass will break eventually but not every glass will scratch.

Haha. I really wasn't trying to troll on art.. I stand behind its an unfinished runtime environment that is not giving everyone the result that they think they're getting but that's for another time and a different discussion.. and also I have NOT gone around saying it either.. i posted in one thread.. my opinion on a topic.. it's not my fault you guys let such little things bother your little brains.
You guys just get so butt hurt when someone disagrees with your my phone is so amazing and has no fault ideals.
My screen is scratched all over. From literally pocket use I guess... I use a screen protector to hide them now cause its very annoying to look at. I never dropped it or anything like that..
I have a small crack around my speaker on the back also.. pressure I assume. ...
All I'm saying is Gorilla Glass isn't all that its cracked up to be..
