While playing simple games (like Flow Free), Facebook, and web browsing, my phone can get really warm/hot. It gets much worse while doing these while it's charging.
I haven't experienced any problems with the heat except when I was installing a lot of things via the Play store, and I got a couple reboots. It's fine otherwise... just hot.
Anyone else experience this?
Mine feels normal during everyday use, during games, about the same, ever so slightly warmer at most. I don't really notice. Any background processes heating your phone up? How is battery life as well?
Your previous phone probably got just as hot. The glass helps transfer the heat better than plastic.
Mine does get warm as well But I think the fact that we feel it might have to do with the size of the device. It's pretty thin.
Mine gets pretty toasty, but that's when I'm using it pretty extensively, like browsing web/forums for an hour straight.

Battery life is pretty good. I'll go through a whole days use with juice to spare.
My phone gets hotter than warm though. Last night playing Flow Free while charging, pressing my finger on the screen eventually gave a little sting.
I know this phone has a lot more CPU power than the hercules (Tmo GS2), but the GS2 with its big glass front never got hot like this, and it would rarely get warm.
I think if your phone is rebooting because of the heat generated from installing apps, you need to RMA it. My phone definitely feels hot after a session of playing a game but it has never rebooted because of it.
Guys, it's a highend phone, what do you expect?
Do you expect a high-end CPU in a desktop PC to run cool? Even in standby an i7 can go up to 30-40°C depending on voltage. And for four cores at 1.512 MHz theres a lot of voltage needed. Don't worry about it unless you get reboots thats not normal.
If the problem continues, send them up here to the north of Sweden. It's gonna be -25°C tomorrow and I could do with some handwarmers
I've had a overheating while playing stupid zombies 2, the phone got hot as ever, but strangely seems to be a ROM related problem, as I had this issue with aokp, while on cm10, playing the same game, the phone get lightly warm, but no more. I was using Franco kernel on both too

never more than a little warm with extensive use.
I'm on stock, updated the phone to whatever is the latest version that google pushed and i just started playing Angry brids for about 10 mintues and the phone got noticeably warm. I guess this is the new 'normal' now?
Mine only gets hot when I'm charging it and using it at the same time.

I have a battery widget and at times when on calls ive gotten up to 101F
i want to say my phone runs warmer than my buddy running the same widget
Mine has only been hot after charging on the Panasonic pad. If the glass breaks from it then RMA!

It certainly gets hot, but only slightly more than my Samsung GS1 i9000. Fact of life when running a quad core at these speeds without a fan.

Mine gets pretty hot. G SAM app reports that the battery has reached 110*f from internet browsing on 3g.
I noticed mine gets pretty warm if I use it for a while just browsing the web.

Mines fine during normal usage. Except when I play graphically demanding games such as need for speed most wanted, after the first race, the screen and the back near the top is hot. Worried about it, I remember the HTC sensation used to get real hot as well, but I've also got an aftermarket battery which also helped with the heat.

at the moment i've got a nexus s and am seriously considering moving on to a nexus 4, i was wondering if anybody else has made the same move as i would like to know how is the battery life on the n4 compared to the ns. i assume it will be worse but i'm hoping it isn't that much of a difference. thanks

made the switch about a week ago. for me the battery life is definitely better. take note that the nexus s only had a 1500mah battery. the phone is a bit big but im quickly getting used to the size. this phone is also lag free.
thing that bothers me is that the phone gets really hot. mine hits 43 degrees celcius when playing games. im thinking of rooting to undervolt it.
The N4 is slightly more power hungry i would say but it is nothing a custom rom cant fix.
my previous device was a Nexus S. I made the switch when the S started to lag/freeze real bad and the battery started draining rapidly. I'm not one to switch devices every year but I'm glad I waited for the N4. Performance is buttery smooth, screen size is awesome, and battery life is excellent. Only minor gripe is that after rooting, it seems my phone sucks up more juice..but could be an isolated incident.

43 degrees is not hot... I'm not sure if you're talking case temp or die temp but put it in perspective - the SandyBridge quad core in my desktop PC doesn't throttle 'till 97 degrees C and the ATI GPU in the same system is similar (not that I'd let them get that hot, but Intel and ATI call it 'safe') Obviously this varies from chip to chip, and a CPU running at 80 degrees C is going to make a tablet or phone pretty difficult to hold on to but I'd imagine the limits they've defined are more about protecting the user and the battery (Li-Ion batteries don't like getting hot...) than the SoC itself. Also, the power consumption of a silicon transistor is directly proportional to its temperature, voltage and switching speed. If you let the device get too hot, battery life would go south quite rapidly.
Without undervolting, the Tegra 3 in my Nexus 7 will hit 70+ under simultaneous GPU/CPU load and this is how Google/Asus/NVidia shipped it, so seriously... Don't worry. I don't have an app that can monitor temps on the N4 and neither do I want to know so I'm not about to start fishing about for thermals in sysfs, although I'm sure it's cooler with a 200mV CPU undervolt than stock
I once peered into a rack owned by a client of mine to see one of the servers with a bright red flashing light on it... I asked the guys "how long has this been happening?!" - 4 years of running under high CPU loads at 90 degrees with a ceased fan wasn't enough to kill it, I doubt much will.

With the right ROM and kernel, the Nexus 4 is giving me the best battery life of any Android phone I've yet owned. Admittedly, it was just light browsing and youtube-watching, but I got 7 hours screen-on through my last charge cycle... Which is double what I got out of my One X with the same kind of usage!
You won't regret it Just don't put it down on even slightly slanted glossy surfaces with no case covering it... LG appear to have invented the perpetual motion phone!

Made the jump myself about a week ago, my Nexus S was starting to lag quite badly and reboot itself a lot. Nexus 4 is leaps and bounds better, no lag, love the screen and battery life seems a little better but not much to be honest, might try rooting and see if it makes a difference with a custom kernal. Very pleased with it overall. Only thing I dislike is the lack of a removable battery and lack of sd card slot but will have to live with it.
Before I swap this thing out, I just wanted to poll you guys and see what the general concencus is.
I'm leaning towards "that's just how it is" after seeing Pocket Lints review that actually called it hot, not warm, but hot.
I have a Note 2 now and doing the same things, replying to forum post emails and browsing around, on WIFI no less, barely gets warm. G2 on the other hand becomes a heating pad...from top to bottom.

Mine gets warm gaming and after a good span on the internet.
Haven't even had mine what I'd really even call warm let alone hot.
Cool as a cucumber here. Gets a little warm when doing something really cpu heavy. Nothing I would call "hot "

How I mention already before in other posts. That is a build in feature of the phone. It is an automatic hand warmer. Specially useful in the winter time.

But more importantly, you all don't really believe one phone is cold and the other is hot, do you?
I'm inclined to believe they're all the same temp, but we all have different tolerance levels for heat.

Mind blowing...
The only time mine gets warm, (never hot) is after some graphic intensive gaming or Qi charging for a prolonged period (Nokia DT-900)
My Droid MAXX HD was a nice hand warmer though.
Well, obviously that's the case. But I really wanted to believe there was a cooler running G2 out there...its such a great phone.

If it's running "hot" and you've already checked to make sure no apps have gone rogue, then I would definitely return it for another. We have 2 G2's bought from different parts of CA and neither have heat issues.
Hot means its eating battery too. Wouldn't be shocked if you got one from the bottom of the speed bin.

Or it could just mean the phone doesn't dissipate heat very well. I've noticed the screen in particular feeling warmer than I'm used to after some casual usage, but nothing that alarms me.
Have heard some people having heat and throttling issues with heavy graphical applications. However, it has seemed to be coming from the T-Mobile variants. I haven't heard a vzw user complain (yet)

I've been reading about lag, bad battery, phones running hot, volume buttons sticking and so on. I must really have been lucky! I've tried duplicating the problems but can't. I play games and surf the internet and forums for sometimes an hour and no heat issue

+1. None of these issues are present with my device.
Yeah no issues here either. and get an app that reads batt. temp at least if ur gonna compare heat levels. Mine never gets above 100 F. my s4 only got to about 96 on heavy usage. And i just returned a Moto x cause it climbed to the highest ive seen a phone, 117.

I truly believe these issues belong to people who came from older phones and are not well educated on how to efficiently use a smart phone. They load their phones with garbage apps and let it all run in the background while running game or streaming video in the foreground. They have a smoking fast phone that can run it all at once, but they are the first to cry and blame the phone when the battery drains fast or the phone gets hot.
Mine doesn't even get warm, let alone hot.

I have the VZW model. I'd like to know what game or games people are experiencing bad performance with so i can test it. Anyone willing to share?

Replacement gets just as hot. I highly doubt I got 2 bad phones, tho I can't get GPS working on the new one. Went back to the Note 2...barely warm. I am surprised by the amount of you that are saying it doesn't get warm @ all though. I think I'm just more sensitive to heat and have a lower tolerance threshold than most of you. Thanks for all the replies.

I've never used an Android phone that doesn't at least get warm. I think you've lost all feeling in your hands!
Hey all.
Had my N4 since the beginning but recently I'm getting quite an annoying problem.
When on 3G, as soon as I start using the phone, you can feel it getting warm but after about 10 mins of light use, its actually burning hot! It only happens on WiFi though.
I contacted Google and they made me factory reset which had no luck. Now there sending me a brand new N4 to replace it
Anyone had this issue before? I've never had any issues with my N4 before and I've had it since the beginning

It's normal. Under LTE heat is noticeably lower, so use that if you have access.

i love these my n4 gets hot threads..
to start off, what battery and cpu temps does your phone reach? dont say it feels hot, feel isnt an accurate way to measure temp, its not a way to measure temp at all actually. feel will only give you if it feels warmer or cooler the body part you are doing the feeling with. and burning hot i highly doubt, unless your hand is ice cold. so, post your battery and cpu temperatures and we can go from there.
Ok, I searched the forum about this topic and didn't really find anything answering my questions. I'm currently coming from a Droid RAZR and it ran hot to say the least. I can't get a straight answer on this phone's operating temperatures and I'm trying to determine whether to put a thick case on or not(with almost no bezel, I'm paranoid it will break on first drop). From what I've read, about 60% of people aren't reporting very much heat. The other 40% say there is a huge problem and most have had to replace their phones thinking it was a defect.
When it came to my RAZR, at rest with a case on, battery temperature would sit at just under 87 F. Under heavy use, I've hit over 124 F. Without a case, 83 F, the highest I've hit is just under 117 F. Extremely significant when you can't remove the battery and swap it out. I believe that it led to it's premature failure. I want to avoid that with this phone.
Is anybody keeping track of their phone and battery temperatures?
What apps and/or widgits do you use?
What is the normal at rest temperature?
What is the heavy use temperature?

I don't keep track of it. However this phone does get really hot (uncomfortable to hold) when playing games. With Tpu cases this was less noticeable. But lately I installed skinomi stickers for back protector, and it always bother me when it gets hot this way.
That being said, normal uses such as Internet, music, YouTube, xda, camera.... The phone only becomes slightly warm.

I keep wondering why no one makes cases that help dissipate heat, for how hot modern phones get! If anything, most cases insulate the phone and make them get even hotter!

Admittedly, I'm not a gamer but the only times I've felt the device get hot enough to register with the Incipio Feather case were: 1) after a wipe/flash, and all my apps were downloading again from the Play Store and 2) when wiping and the device was plugged into the wall charger (CPU temp was around 100 degrees) - other than these 2 instances, I've never felt heat thru my Feather case.

The case I had been using with the RAZR was a TPU hybrid. I also went to a skin because of the heat. I don't think I cando that with this phone. I'm too clumsy.

I was actually looking at getting the dual pro. Thanks for the feedback. Exactly the type I'm looking for.
Honestly i just replaced my phone due to overheating issues. It would literally shut down or restart just running the camera for too long. After reading some other reports in the forums I decided to send it in and get a replacement. My new one came in yesterday and absolutely no overheating issues. Even can run antutu without a reboot (my other G2 would reboot about 14% in). So from my experience there was a batch that had some thermal issues... I got mine the first day it came out. Loving this second one

Does anybody know if we can track manufacture/release date using the serial numbers?

I use Battery and CPU-Z to check battery temps. Even with over an hour of straight gaming, I have yet to see it get above 98F. I constanty run the screen at 80% brightness as well, as that can be a contributing factor. The games I have played this long with are Riptide GP and Madden 25.
You really cant feel any heat through this case, and hand temps are too subjective anyway.

yeah, especially while gaming.. and it's not the battery drain that concerns me, the heat is ridiculous for long term gaming..
and slapping a case would be good for your hand but not for your phone
plus there's not one manufacturer that make cases for heavy gaming yet..
i wonder what the case would look like if it was made for dissapating heat.. probably has a lot of thermal pipelines built in that would be awesome..

One thing I've noticed from people's screenshots is that the screen doesn't use that much battery. My RAZR would sometimes draw 46%. I'm sure that also contributed to the heat. smh.

lol, I've actually thought about making a case like that, then I realized if there was a way to burn myself, I'd find it.

I'm currently in the design step of a case that uses tubing to disperse heat at the top corners of the phone to cool it down and keep heat away from the hand.
If you'd like to give input shoot me a pm and we can discuss it further.
OnT: I very rarely pass 24c on mine, then again I never game on my phone either. Highest I've hit was 42c during some testing.

Get the app CpuTemp from play store, it overlays cpu temp while you're doing whatever, enable only the top two options, enable overlay and start on boot.
Then get stability test app and run the first option at top, classic test.
Then report back here with your temp after you do the stress test for about 27 seconds. I hit 66c after 27 seconds.
Curious to see what everyone else hits.

Is overheating an issue when wifi tethering? I want to use this thing for desktop PC games and downloads; does it overheat after hours and hours of intense wifi hotspot use?

I have used it for a couple hours and it gets warm. Not warm enough for me to worry about checking the temperature.

I have made the tests , and i get 72 °C after 1:20 secs running the standard test. About 35 °C in idle,and about 50-55 °C when i am using the phone for facebook,browser,youtube. Is this ok? (These are Cpu Temps).

My G2 gets also around 55°C when using the phone normally (youtube, browser, etc.) and over 67-68°C while gaming. I think this is normal for a high frequency 4 cores CPU. Right?
Hey, I received my LG G2 yesterday and i've been experiencing cpu temperatures of:
42-48C being idle
52-59C during browsing, facebook, viber etc
62-64C when on youtube (after the first 5 seconds)
65C when on gps
As for the stress test after 1:20 and up to 20:00 it was around 72-74 C
The phone feels hot all the time though with no apparent reason.
Screen brightness is set to 30% all the time, 3g connection is off and I only keep Wi-fi on. I even tried turning off features like gestures, I don't know if it is of any relevance.
Of course I haven't trying gaming yet, since I'm not really interested in it, but I want my smartphone to be functional without burning up.
Should I return it and ask for a replacement? Or is it an issue with LG G2 or Snapdragon 800 generally? Will it be a waste of time?
