I'm planning on getting a 64 GB HTC One X + OR a Samsung Galaxy S3. Is it possible to stream movies (good quality blu ray rips) from the phone to the tablet via OTG? Is it possible some way via wi-fi or bluetooth?
Also what's better for OTG, MicroSD adapter or flash drive? For movies especially.

You could probably use WiFi Direct to transfer (not stream) from your HOX+ or GS3, and you can also use DLNA if they're on the same WiFi network (this requires a router though).
As for USB OTG speeds, you have a better chance of finding a faster flash drive than you do with a microSD reader, not to mention that most large capacity microSD cards are not high speed even if the readers are "fast".
There is a free Samba server app in the play store. Should be possible to combine it with a program to mount a cifs/smb share on the tablet (MountManager worked great for me in CyanogenMod 10 on the Galaxy Nexus), then you can browse it as simply as if the content was in the internal storage. Might require root though, probably with a cifs kernel (or maybe someone can compile a module when the AOSP is released).
I don't know too much about USB OTG but current devices use MTR to transfer files rather than basic USB Storage so it's unlikely to work via OTG, (At least not without installing some MTR software onto the phone which would be more complex than the cifs solution).

- how much is the actual available capacity on a 16gb version? in galaxy s phone it is called 16gb but the storage we can access is around 13.43gb
I can't say for 100% that this isn't possible but I don't believe it is. Theoretically you could use swiFTP and make your phone a ftp server and use your tablet to share files. I believe the speed at which these files would transfer between the two devices would be severely hindered. You would be better off buying the USB adapter (when it comes ) and plugging in a usb drive.

I was actually curious of this too especially since I keep seeing all these Wi-Fi drives coming out. I was wondering why they wouldn't work in that way. I did forget something though.
What about DLNA? Supposedly our tablets support the tech and so do Samsung Galaxy S IIs. Couldn't you just stream a video over to the tablet at that point?
I'm really curious about this and I'm kind of upset that DLNA isn't pushed as hard as Apple's Air Play stuff.

I was looking at both the Nexus 10 and the Samsung Note 10. I saw the specs for both and obviously the Nexus has better specs aside from the lack of SD card slot.
I was wonder from other users if they could clue me into short comings for a few of the things I would like to get this tablet for.
1. I have lot of tutorials videos that I would like to use to tablet to see. They come in various formats including wmv, mov, flv, and sometimes other formats. Will viewing tutorials on this tablet be a problem? One thing I am concerned about is how will I be able to store them on the tablet considering the storage is so small. I did some brief searching online and apparently I can get some wire and hook up an external thumb usb drive. I rip a lot of movie dvds for my home theater (Usually movies are around 2GB+ .mov).
2. Is tethering from lets say an HTC EVO (3G) ok for surfing the web when on the road?
3. If you don't have a working wifi connection, can you still use the tablet and google maps for directions? GPS should work without wifi no? Guess the question becomes can you download google maps before hand.
I would suggest getting the N10 and popcorn player for your videos that way you take notes while watching videos usig either freenote or any of the other good handwriting apps
the lack of SD card slot can be easily overcome by using an OTG cable and installing the Nexus Media Importer app. You can connect any USB flash drive or SD card reader to the OTG cable.
I would still suggest getting a 32GB version. You can't store games on a SD card.
Mine tethers fine with a Galaxy S2 wifi hotspot. No reason yours won't.
Not sure about the GPS thing.

1. My N10 managed to play every video I threw at it using VLC player. Also you can connect not only USB drives and SD Card readers but also certain 2.5" or 1.8" hard drives. I use a WD MyPassport 500GB and it works as long as the tablet's battery is above about 75%.
2. Tethering works fine. WLAN or Bluetooth, whatever you prefer. Bluetooth tethering is fairly easy on the battery.
3. You can download Maps for offline viewing and GPS works offline as well. I saved my home city (Berlin) and some areas I often go to and it takes up about 150 MB.

Can I play movies on PC from nexus 4 while it's connected with USB cable like it was a regular flash drive?
When I try doing it the file is being downloaded first then plays. If the file is big it takes a lot of time.
I'm using windows 8.
Better copy the film to your pc first. I got the same problem but dont think this is os related. Just a bad read speed, worse than actually usb 2.0.
The speed is onpair with usb 2.0, still copying the whole movie to some unknown place instead of direct play is unnecessary and waste of time.
My previous phone had an sdcard which appeared as hard drive when connected to PC, but N4 appears as portable device. This sucks
That's because the Nexus 4 doesn't support USB On The Go. Search xda for "Nexus 4 OTG" and you'll come across some threads about this, and a couple of workarounds that might, or might not work for you :fingers-crossed:.

I would assume increasing the SD read-ahead (if you're on a custom kernel) might help with your issue here. But as someone else previously mentioned, copying to PC is definitely the better option. That, or just enjoy the movie on your Nexus4

I have been looking around for a good 10 inch Android tablet and have more or less decided on the N10 over the Pipo M8 Pro and the 10 inch offers from Samsung.
However, the lack of microsd expansion bothers me and I wonder if you gentlemen and gentleladies might be able to help.
I intend to use the N10 for work as well as pleasure. At the moment, I carry all my files with me on a USB hub with 4 x 32Gb Sandisk Cruzer Fits attached.
I would like to access the files, both reading and writing, on these Cruzer Fits via OTG. For example I receive a file from my boss and I download it to edit. I would like to be able to save the file directly onto one of the Cruzer Fits and edit the file directly from there. Basically I want to bypass the N10 storage altogether (reserving that space for personal entertainment).
Would any of you be able to shed light on whether that is possible? And what I would need to do to make it happen? E. G. Root the N10, buy a particular app or something?

You need a OTG adaptor, only a few quid off E-Bay, then an app to let you read/write to the USB. I bought this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.homeysoft.nexususb.importer&hl=en and it does the job fine (doesn't require root)
Of course if you know you'll have access to wi-fi you can use Dropbox, Google Drive or Box which all have apps and it negates the need for the USB.
I use the same paid app too, and Stickmount which is free.

You need to root the N10. Most corporate use policies ban rooting meaning you're going to get frowned at, or must keep the fact you rooted it a secret (noone can really tell unless they look). Then install Stickmount (it needs root). The USB sticks are probably FAT32 formatted so will work, but if they happen to be formatted say NTFS then you'll need to follow the instructions for the app to copy ntfs-3g to /sdcard.
You sound like you want read-only which the above will do, if you want to copy files TO the USB stick from the N10 if its NTFS then you need SELinux Mode Changer app.
You said you want to watch films on the USB and NOT copy to the N10 but that means you are powering the stick from the N10 and accelerating battery drain. Even if you got the Pogo cable, it won't actually be taking in any charge when the USB is being used for Stickmount. Also, on my N10, I use a USB NTFS harddrive, and it doesn't stay working long enough to watch stuff, so I copy files off and watch locally, it needs only then work for a couple of minutes which is does perfectly ok. So I'd encourage you to think of temporarily connecting and copying files and deleting rather than watching it off the stick.
If there is another device able to share the same Wifi then you can also connect storage to that other device and stream via CIFS mount share or http, e.g. connect USB storage to a Rasberry PI and run Apache on it and link /var/www/something to the usb mount (/mnt/something). I guess that sounds scary if you're not a geek. I have such and 1TB drive connected to it as my primary datastore for media when at home.
Speed, I get about 2MB/s Wifi CIFS copy, 4MB/s Wifi FTP copy and 7MB Wifi http copy and about 21MB/s copying off USB harddrive so a typical HD film is about 1GB/hour, so 1.5GB copy off USB is say 71 seconds to copy or over http copy is 214s.
Best media play is MX Player, having tried them all. Oh and if you root you can install Adaway to block MX Player's ads when you pause.
Instead of new comers squandering around looking for solutions to set up the nexus player for gaming and media streaming. Lets simplify things a bit to see what accessories to get and what software to use to get our nexus player to its maximum capability.
Lollirock 1.5 rom (OTG micro usb cable and a usb mouse or keyboard are required during first bootup. It will not detect nexus remote during first bootup)
Stick mount pro(Play Store) Make sure it's the pro version or else it won't work!-
- A must have for external storage. This app enables storage drives to mount into a specific location using symbolic link option which isn't included in the free version. By default, it will mount storage devices under sdcard/usb folder instead of usb:// mount location (apps like emulators or xbmc that uses file explore do not search to this location usb://)
- I have tested it on xbmc, my boy, fpse, and ppsspp.
Known issue: external storage formatted under ntfs will not mount properly. Files will not show up under mount folder.
I'm currently using exFAT format and it seem to work fine so far.
For those who uses stock Nexus Player rom, you have to download stick mount pro from a third party site since the license won't transfer(I'm assuming that you paid for it)

- Can pair up to 2 controllers for two players games. There's also a setting to set dual shock 3 or 4 to run as native android controller, so you don't have to deal with mapping everything manually.

- It very important to choose the right otg micro usb cable because it can effect read/write speed for external storage drives, including low power consumption drives such as usb flash drives and sd cards. This hub can run with or without a secondary power source.
I thought something like a flash drive with a low power consumption didn't require a decent otg cable, but it does. I was testing a psp rom off my usb storage with a much simpler micro usb otg cable and the frame rate wasn't that great also the loading time. Transfer files were also very slow. So keep that in mind, make sure to get a decent micro usb otg hub or card reader. At least get one that you can supply power to from an outlet.
For those who are looking to run Amazon prime video, download Kodi (xbmc) and Amazon prime video add-on zip.
-Amazon instant video app is crappy on android to begin with compare to IOS version which has a more user friendly UI similar to Netflix. Kodi improves that with cover arts and tv-friendly user interface.

I have but I think the problem is I didn't see a Bluetooth address when I set it up on the Nexus player maybe I have to fix the zoom setting in the overscan setting on my Nexus player to see it
