Is it possible to connect galaxy s1/2 via wifi and use the phone storage on tablet? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

I have several questions will appreciate the users who can answer
-Is it possible to connect galaxy s1/2 to the tablet via wifi or cable and use the phone storage (incluse micro sd) on galaxy tablet?
- how much is the actual available capacity on a 16gb version? in galaxy s phone it is called 16gb but the storage we can access is around 13.43gb

I can't say for 100% that this isn't possible but I don't believe it is. Theoretically you could use swiFTP and make your phone a ftp server and use your tablet to share files. I believe the speed at which these files would transfer between the two devices would be severely hindered. You would be better off buying the USB adapter (when it comes ) and plugging in a usb drive.

thanks for your help
how about the second question? how much is the actual available storage on the tablet?

I was actually curious of this too especially since I keep seeing all these Wi-Fi drives coming out. I was wondering why they wouldn't work in that way. I did forget something though.
What about DLNA? Supposedly our tablets support the tech and so do Samsung Galaxy S IIs. Couldn't you just stream a video over to the tablet at that point?
I'm really curious about this and I'm kind of upset that DLNA isn't pushed as hard as Apple's Air Play stuff.

Is it possible to connect a phone as "storage" for the Nexus 10?

I'm planning on getting a 64 GB HTC One X + OR a Samsung Galaxy S3. Is it possible to stream movies (good quality blu ray rips) from the phone to the tablet via OTG? Is it possible some way via wi-fi or bluetooth?
Also what's better for OTG, MicroSD adapter or flash drive? For movies especially.
Thanks!
You could probably use WiFi Direct to transfer (not stream) from your HOX+ or GS3, and you can also use DLNA if they're on the same WiFi network (this requires a router though).
As for USB OTG speeds, you have a better chance of finding a faster flash drive than you do with a microSD reader, not to mention that most large capacity microSD cards are not high speed even if the readers are "fast".
There is a free Samba server app in the play store. Should be possible to combine it with a program to mount a cifs/smb share on the tablet (MountManager worked great for me in CyanogenMod 10 on the Galaxy Nexus), then you can browse it as simply as if the content was in the internal storage. Might require root though, probably with a cifs kernel (or maybe someone can compile a module when the AOSP is released).
I don't know too much about USB OTG but current devices use MTR to transfer files rather than basic USB Storage so it's unlikely to work via OTG, (At least not without installing some MTR software onto the phone which would be more complex than the cifs solution).
Thanks for the replies.

Droid for external JBOD -NAS

Good morning all,
I am wondering if there is a feasible way to use a droid phone as the processer to enable a usb JBOD to offer a network share for media storage.
Currently I am using 2 - 8 bay Probox devices with 3TB drives and would like them to be NAS devices for my 40+TB movie db. I was using a media player for the share, but now am having problems with the device and would like a cheap method to share my drives directly on my network. I do have several old droid phones. Does anyone know if the internal processor of a droid like a Galaxy 2 could handle the work load if I connected directly with a USB cable and shared with wireless??? Also would there be a way to use the internal 4G for the share instead of wifi? What kind of throughput could be expected if using for 30-50gb files?
Also - Is this the correct place to post this or is there a more appropriate area on the forum???
Thanks

Connecting to MAC via USB ???

Well it's official, I'm at my wits end trying to figure out just how to connect my Note 10.1 to my Macbook Air connecting via USB cable. Every time I connect the two, I can't find it ANYWHERE on my laptop !!!
Anyone else experience this all too frustrating conundrum???

I've had this issue since I bought it months ago. Use AirDroid.

Android file transfert works fine. Do NOT install the Samsung USB driver from kies this Is complete ****. airdroid is **** too you can't even copy a folder. ah don't forget to disable USB debbug otherwise aft won't detect your device.
I've never been able to see any of my Android devices on my Mac without using Android File Transfer & I believev that's the way things just are.
The problem is that Android only presents itself over USB as either a media device using MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) or PTP (PrinterTransfer Protocol) standards - settable in settings. It does not support USB Mass Storage protocol.
Windows supports MTP out of the box for Media Player, so when you connect your Android to it - it shows up as what looks like, for all intents and purposes, a hard drive. In the Note's case - you get two: one for the internal simulated 'SD' card - and one for the actual SD card reader. This is why when you copy files to and from the Note, the experience is a little weird - it will offer to convert files for you, for example.
Unfortunately, MacOS X doesn't support MTP because, I suspect, Apple wants everyone using iDevices and their proprietary iTunes protocols which aren't compabtible with MTP.
Now, while it's dumb of Google not to support USB Mass Storage in Android, it's equally dumb of Apple not to support MTP in their OS.
Fortunately, there are addons you can get to fix this (as noted above).
Windows users (and I suspect, Linux ones as well) don't have a problem.

It's not across the board android, just the tablets. All my phones up to the note 2 would connect as mass storage even with exchange installed. Even the og note
I've just found an app called ES file explorer. Set up your Mac as a smb server and you can access your files via wifi. Much faster than blue tooth.
A video file transfer from my macbook to my note 10.1 took 4 hours, similar file via wifi took about 5 mins.
Still testing the app, but quite pleased so far.

Kinda. I don't think my Galaxy Nexus phone shows up in MacOS either (it's been a while since I checked so I could be wrong).
To complicate matters, each vendor adds bits to the OS. For example, Asus Transformer Primes can read NTFS drives out of the box - but most Androids can't. They've added something to the kernel to add the capability.
AFAIK, the base Android doesn't support USB Mass Storage on the host port.
Did u try to mount the drives in recovery? I'm assuming your rooted

[Q] Play movies from nexus 4 on PC

Hi
Can I play movies on PC from nexus 4 while it's connected with USB cable like it was a regular flash drive?
When I try doing it the file is being downloaded first then plays. If the file is big it takes a lot of time.
I'm using windows 8.
Better copy the film to your pc first. I got the same problem but dont think this is os related. Just a bad read speed, worse than actually usb 2.0.
The speed is onpair with usb 2.0, still copying the whole movie to some unknown place instead of direct play is unnecessary and waste of time.
My previous phone had an sdcard which appeared as hard drive when connected to PC, but N4 appears as portable device. This sucks
That's because the Nexus 4 doesn't support USB On The Go. Search xda for "Nexus 4 OTG" and you'll come across some threads about this, and a couple of workarounds that might, or might not work for you :fingers-crossed:.
Hey there
I wasn't looking for USB OTG, which is a way to connect external drives to the device. I'm looking for a way to use N4 itself as a regular external drive while connected to PC. Currently it's seen by PC as a portable device and it's pretty limited.

I would assume increasing the SD read-ahead (if you're on a custom kernel) might help with your issue here. But as someone else previously mentioned, copying to PC is definitely the better option. That, or just enjoy the movie on your Nexus4

[Q] Question regarding Homesync

I've seen mentioned in the Samsung presentation and on various websites that go over Homesync, but I still don't know what it is. Is it cloud storage from Samsung? Or does it allow you to purchase a 1TB hard drive separately from your Galaxy S4 that you keep in your Home, and then let you sync your devices with it? If it's just server-side cloud storage, are they actually offering 1TB for free for the lifespan of your device?
Thanks for any feedback.
Homesync is a device by Samsung, that is connected to your TV through HDMI. It natively runs android 4.2 and will act as a smartphone that is connected to your TV. You are able to download apps just like you would on a normal smartphone.
Homesync will be controlled using either your smartphone (the phone will acts as touchpad/keyboard) or by connecting a mouse/keyboard in one of the usb ports.
Homesync will indeed also give you the ability to backup your device contents on the built-in 1TB hard drive.
Although the device is still under development (and more specifically the software) so we have no idea where this project will lead, but it is expected to bring the Samsung Convergence Ideal to your home, allowing you to connect all sorts of Samsung devices.
more information will follow
Alright, thanks for clearing that up. Sucks that it's not technically server side cloud storage and you'll have to pay for the device separately.
Hadnt heard of this before now, sounds like the sort of thing I'd want have the given a rough idea when they think itll be released?
