[Q] OTA Update - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
Has anyone/ reviewers received the much publicized OTA which was due on 11th from google.

Patience is key. Just sit back and wait for the 13th, I'd say.

It's not a matter of what's new,I think a number of people are waiting to see final software performance and battery before they make their decision on the 13th.

I understand but i was just suggesting that it may be better to wait till the 13th - when people post about the final/retail software performance themselves- and then pull the trigger.

Yeah im curious to know too, supposedly with this update now you'lll have widgets in the lockscreen and maybe the battery problems will be solved :victory:

This most likely IS the final retail software.
do you really think that google will push out another OTA update in 2 days after this?
lol

If the software isn't perfect even on release day, Google will still issue updates accordingly. Its not like Google will sell you a phone, and then not fix any issues. So even if battery life is not perfect on day one, that could easily be fixed with an update. I am buying on day one no matter what, as I desperately need a new phone.

You can't compare them, the Galaxy Nexus has a smaller battery and a more power hungry screen.

It's 1pm here in California and there is no OTA update yet. Confirmed by AnandTech; https://twitter.com/nerdtalker/status/267732873061224448

The launch of the n4 is a little different than the galaxy nexus. If there are major bugs that people are unhappy with that can be fixed with a software update, I think Google will fix them.

What's wrong with Google? I hope they get their sh*t together and release a final ota that fixes all the current bugs. I would think that they would update the software before the release to do any last minute debugging.

I agree. Releasing an update the day it goes on sale does not seem ideal. In case there are issue with update.

Idk what's taking Google so long, its not a major update.

Seems like the devs over at google might be having a hard time getting a 3.4 kernel optimized for android devices... As far as I know, it's the first phone to use the 3.4.x kernel branch. Most other ICS or JB android devices use the 3.0.x branch.

That should help you out, if you haven't seen it already. I may or may not hold off on the OTA because it may help with the Droid X rooting efforts. Chances are I'll get it though :-/
This is my first android phone so I'm just wondering...what's the procedure for an OTA update? Will the Droid X automatically prompt us when it becomes available or is there a manual action required?

automatic, so yes something will prompt you and if you don't click for it yourself in 3 minutes is the time frame i believe, it will automatically just do it. it will restart your phone after it downloads and then install and start up again.

this was a result of Samsung posting that ATT had fixes in the works and myself and others went off on their facebook page. Samsung shortly like 3 minutes posted that they are working with ALL carriers on a fix.
I didn't see them tweet or post about Froyo, but that they are working on fixes

Well, some people may not want to root -- either don't know how, or feels it's "illegal," or don't want to run the security risk.
In practice, even with lag fix, the phone still freezes on occasion (usually when a call comes in, which means I can't answear it, or when trying to unlock. It's rare, but it shouldn't be happening.
We paid our $$$, now the ball's in Samsung's court.
Sounds to me that this update that the Captive got didn't improve the GPS much. Some even say its worse after the update. MAYBE, Just maybe. T-Mobile had to see where these updates went and Then fix it before we get it. Then when it works on the vibrant we can be happy?

LOL. You have a lot of faith in T-Mobile. More likely they are lazier and don't work on weekends or overtime....
I am starting to fear that it's possible the compass (and possibly the GPS) is a hardware issue.

Any news from SamFirmware regarding September leaks?

In the past we've been getting about 2 leaks a month from SamFirmware, one mid-month and one end of month. With the ides of September coming up I was wondering if anyone has been in contact with them? (I don't have a twitter account or I'd tweet them myself.
Hoping for EI09
Or is everyone just so burned out on leaks that it just doesn't matter any more?
Ill hit them up, but I think they said August was the last minth of leaks for the D700 because builds were updated too often. Ill lost back when I hear back from them

Well nothing a custom rom, kernal and mods can't fix.
So does this offically start at midnight or will it be tomorrow morning?
Call me a cynic, but based off their history, there's a pretty good chance that Samsung/Sprint might screw this one up like Froyo and we might have it pulled.
Good find! Let's see if Sprint updates their website tonight.
Hooray! I will be interested to see what the Airrave notification fix is.

also, if this is an 8-day rollout, and if it actually begins tomorrow, most of us won't be getting GB pushed to our Epics until the weekend at the earliest.

If you are using EAS (push emal with Microsoft Exchange) you can have the problem where the email is in plain text formatting but the HTML tags are included <BR><BR> as an example. We use Exchange 2003 at our office and its been a problem. Solution is to root and install Fascinate's email. I like the Fascinate email program better anyway.
So the first 5 days of the rollout, only 11% of the users will see the update total? Wow, we should all go back to stock tonight so we can make sure at least one of us grabs it.
From what i read 100% over 8 days. hxxp://m.androidcentral.com/gingerbread-sprint-epic-4g-begins-rolling-out-tomorrow-nov-9-rumor

Seriously, what is in 4.4 that frustrates you not having it in 4.3.1? What magical hardware feature is going to be unlocked when you load 4.4? I'm curious because from what I can see of 4.4 there is very little of interest to most people other than being on the latest.

Assuming, of course, that this is actually a part of 4.4. Since the purchase only recently closed (what, maybe a week ago?) I question whether Google has had the time and opportunity to integrate this into 4.4. Seems more likely that this would be a cornerstone of a 5.0 release given the timing. <sarcasm> And with the stunning amount of information we have available on 4.4 </sarcasm>, I think it is safe to say we'll have to wait until there is a 4.4 release before we know for sure.

From the little news we heard about the takeover was that they were already integrated into the Android team for several months. But the takeover might be a reason for the delay, that although the work was done the legal matters took longer than expected before they could be finalized.

Keeping my fingers crossed that it is a part of 4.4. Until the deal closed, it would have been unwise of Google (legally speaking) to release any version of Android with Flexycore code built in. That may explain a little of the delay in seeing a Nexus 5 as well as having a 4.3 release. It just seems from a marketing perspective, though, that they might steal a lot of thunder from a 5.0 release by putting tech in 4.4 which gives such a performance boost. But then Google doesn't follow the same marketing path everyone else does, now do they?
Maybe he's excited about the few new UI integrations? Not a big deal but some people like it.

What a completely pointless thread this is for a pointless question. The only people who know when 4.4 will be released are not saying and nobody here will know.
This needs to be closed.
kitkat will be here when its here end off lol why do folks get frustrated waiting, really its only an update
4.3 running smooth now am sure there be small bugs on 4.4 update

Breath, relax chill the eff out. It's not a big deal. Even if they choose to never release it life goes on. I can't believe all the stressed out people over this.

Assuming we saw an inadvertent picture of the Nexus 5 back at the beginning of September, it seems odd that here we are a few days away from 2 months later without even an announcement. The device back then looked a lot more production and less prototype. That says to me delay but no clear reason why. Granted it is an assumption on my part (and maybe I am reading a lot into nothing more than a picture) and I do not have strong feelings one way or the other about it, nor do I think there is some nefarious plan to keep either the Nexus 5 or KitKat from us. I am also more than willing to admit that I am wrong, but in the end I am just engaging in speculation to keep myself busy until something more definitive comes along.
Is it me or do people get overly excited for android updates that are generally meh? lol
