How is the Nexus 7 wifi? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an htc inspire 4g and it barerly works on wifi if at all in the location i would most want to use it in. My ps3/xbox 360/netbook all work fine on wifi in the same exact location. Does the nexus 7 have a good built in wifi?

I've never had any issues. !!
Snappy and no connection problems to date !

Sat side by side connected to the same router My ONE X has 2 bars My Nexus 7 32gb has 4

I can tell it's way stronger than my gnex

Much stronger than my Nexus S. However my phone is two years old so it's possible quality has dropped since then.

I agree with that. My nexus has most of the time 4 or 5 bars, whereas my gnex has 2 or 3.

WiFi worked fine for me. Just note that it doesn't support 5GHz

Works good for me

Works very well. Actually picks up the Hotel wireless across the street from the light rail station I use.
I use it at home streaming Hulu+ while standing in front of the microwave popping popcorn.
Not sure what the huge deal is moving to "dual band" with 5GHz to get away from the interference I don't seem to be encountering. Actually I do, dual band with the proper client yields the potential to have a much faster wireless connection (600Mbps) versus the peak theoretical with single band 2.4Ghz (300Mhz).
If I'm not getting the interference in busy downtown Seattle, where is it exactly?

Wifi has been great, but I have noticed once I rooted and put a custom kernel on that signal was not as good as on stock. Just would notice I would lose signal in spots at home when I never used to.

I picked up a N7 yesterday, no complaints yet. I agree the Wi-Fi connection is more stable than my GalNex.

thanks everyone for the responses.

I'm about to return mine because of wifi issues. It was really fast at browsing a week ago when I got it but now it's a slug browsing the net. Even after a factory reset same slow problem browsing. The apps themselves were fine just web surfing. Every page I visit takes 10-20 seconds to load on chrome and Firefox . My ipad and iPhone does it in 1-2 seconds using the same darn wifi. Many resets and same slug issues. I never modded or anything. Very weird.

Have my iPad 3rd gen same room and have full bars and nexus has 2 or 3 not bad at all.

N7 probably has the best wifi of any device I've owned.

well i bought the thing based on web reviews about the wifi and price. my motodroid has horrible wifi problems and this thing has never dropped my connection in the few months of owning.

My experience is that the Nexus 7 got a pretty decent range on the wifi antenna. When it comes to speed my GNexus is pretty much about 2-3 times as fast. Easily seen when updating large apps on Play Store.

Improve wifi performance

This is the lamest "mod" ever.
If you are experiencing dropped wifi because you are just barely within signal (like I am at work), holding the phone in landscape orientation with the backlit hardware keys on the right will increase your wifi signal by two bars. Im assuming the chip is on the right side of the phone.
Cheers

Maybe it depends on router location. Both orientations should be tried. This saved me because holding the phone upright drops signal every few minutes, but landscape is a solid 2

makes sense that the wifi antenna is on the right since if it is plugged into a dock (left side down, where the hdmi/usb are), the wifi would be able to get the best signal....dont know this for a fact but makes sense

from my understanding,
the way antennas work is that they have a null/hole perpendicular to how they're pointed.
in other words, if the transmitting antenna is pointing straight up and down, then the receiving antenna should be pointing straight up and down for the best reception. otoh, for the WORST reception, the receiving antenna should then be pointing sideways (if the transmitting is pointing straight up and down.)
therefore, in a perfect world, if you wanted the best coverage...on a router with two antennas, you'd point one straight up and down, and another sideways. that way you have everything covered...the straight up and down, and the sideways...and everything inbetween.
but we don't live in a perfect world...and there are walls, reflections and cancellations...and so came the rise of the "rabbit ear" tv antenna position..two antennas pointed 45degrees off center...which is a compromise. each antenna is now more likely to pick up "something" vs "nothing". you may not get the best reception, but you won't get the worst...and you shouldn't get "holes".
and so with the atrix, it'd depend how the wifi antennas are situated vs how your router antennas are situated vs the wifi reflections off the walls, etc.
also, if you think about it, if the antennas are on the side...then in portrait mode your hands are covering the antennas, whereas in landscape mode you're not.
The atrix has N draft wireless and i have been less than impressed with the signal strength seeing as my iphone back in the day could get much better signal in identical situations. However this does not by any means diminish the awesomeness of android over iOS

It's because of the location of the wifi chip on the phone. I get better signal with my Atrix lanscape, hardware keys to the right, than I could get with my iphone 4 in ANY orientation.

I'm in Devon and just waiting on my Atrix to be delivered so I can move my IP4 back to 2nd / spare phone. where I work is right on the fringe area of 3g signal and i find the Iphone will hold onto 3g and end up dropping calls, when it should let it go and drop to 2g like most phones do when they are in the same place.
Its good to know in your experience the Atrix has better signal and hopefully in a couple hours I'll be able to post the same confirmation. I also have a wifi network close by our office that lappies can see but normally phones dont so will be interesting to see if the Atrix lists it.

Any one had any luck using BTopenzone?

Wifi performance any better from 2 months ago?

So now that this phone has been released in multiple countries and there are over 6 million of them sold, can anyone confirm that the Wifi performance on the newer models has improved? Or has Samsung released any firmware updates for it?
I was following this phone about 2 months ago and almost everyone was reporting that Wifi performance was really bad compared to their other phones. I am very much reliant on Wifi so I chose to stop following the progress on this phone.
Has this changed though?
Please don't reply with "my Wifi is fine" because that will not help anyone and most likely the people who say that have no idea what they are talking about. If your Wifi seems to be comparable to your other smart phones, please let us know.
If not can you do some tests and tell us how fast the signal quality degrades and at how many feet from the router? Also don't go off the stock android Wifi meter please, use a real Wifi app if you're going to take the time to do some testing.
**I've just realized that my wording is very misleading. When I say Wifi performance I do not mean speed, I mean signal strength and quality of signal at marginal distances.**
Thanks for reading.

Full strength in my router room, 3 lines in the most distant room with 3 walls between, something like 25 metres aways from the router (we do not use feet in Europe, we use metric units ). Way to make a general assumption there buddy...
I, for one, will tell you that my Wi-Fi has been just fine, and even better on my SGS2 than on my SGS.
And yes, I have done some testing comparing signal strength on both phones.
However, I do realize that quite a few people have reported wi-fi issues on their SGS2. I don't know if it was a software issue or hardware though.
Personally I would considere those as defective units, because there are people with Wi-Fi working just fine, and contrary to what you believe, they do know what they are talking about.
Do you think I came in here and made this up off the top of my head?

Now this is more in line with what I've been hearing. Again, without testing and comparison, there is no way to know that his s2 really does have less range or maybe that his netbook doesn't have excellent range, or that both of his readings are false because of OS discrepancies.

Bearing in mind my previous phones were using the 2.4ghz signal, I would say that that the S2 has better range....but that is a little subjective seeing as I never tested thorughly on the previous phones. I do think that the S2's reception has improved with the advent of newer firmware/modems. I currently run villainrom 2.1, with the kg3 modem.
I can get signal in my garden, about 15 meters away,1-2 bars with the s2.My streak would barely make a connection, it would be intermittent. My Galaxy 7" tab will hold a 1 bar signal. I never tested the hero(I was just so happy someone swapped it for my n97).

It's best to use a wifi channel that other routers in your area aren't using, to avoid interference. My sgs2 actually has a few meters more strength than my sgs and g2x.

Wifi performance.

I used to own an Atrix and got rid of it because of the Wifi performance and a couple of other minor things. I'm wondering though, if I loaded a custom rom, could it literally improve the Wifi performance?
On my Inspire, the Wifi strength got better when I loaded cm7. Has anyone that's loaded cm7 on their Atrix noticed an improvement in Wifi performance?
I would literally have to hold the Atrix in landscape orientation to pick up signal at work where my iPhone 4 and Inspire can pick it up regularly.

I'd have to say that your particular phone had a problem. Mine has awesome wifi strength. Way better than my Tilt2 or iPhone 3GS....and way faster since it's "n".
Maybe I should use the term range not performance.
I had 3 different Atrix's and they had the same range and were all dead in the same spots.

Haven't noticed a difference in roms and wifi performance....
My 3gs hasvway better range then ny ATRIX ... so sad.
Still ... its not an issue since I have pretty good 3g coverage in my area.

Yes, unfortunately the atrix wifi range isn't that good. I have trouble picking up signal where others do so easily.
I wonder if the antenna is too small... would it be possible to "embed" a wire inside the back cover and connect it to the regular antenna to create a makeshift range extender?
Edit: iI think the phone's radio has influence over wifi reception, but it can only go so far. Might not be 'improveable' as much as we'd like to.

Very sad yes. I work in a lead lined building and have no service whatsoever, I completely rely on Wifi.

That'd be your particular device's problem. Atrix got best wifi performance IMHO. Very fast and responsive. SpeedTest.net results shows that with the wifi at my home, my XT720 returns a speed of 7~8 Mbps where Atrix always returns 12~16 Mbps of speed.
I'd say the reduction in range is due to the improvement in speed.
My Atrix get's my wifi signal about 20m through 4-5 concrete walls, occasionally I've also noticed it get's it through 3 levels in my apartment building, though I don't have anything else to compare it too.

I doubt a ROM will significantly improve the wifi range on the Atrix, more of hardware thing IMO.
Same behavior for me at work too. My old BB 8900 can hold onto the weak wifi signal (around 80-90dbm) better than my Atrix. If I run too much data on wifi on the Atrix, the wifi will throw too many errors and disconnect. I ran logcat to see all of the fun stuff going on to figure this out.
Fortunately work is upgrading the wireless network soon .

How often does it happen, or just all the time?
I am also having wifi issues on my nexus 10. I am seeing constant disconnects with my older dlink 825 router that doesn't happen with any other device. Signal strength is much weaker than any other device. I believe it also knocks other devices off the wifi network when the n10 loses its connection but haven't been able to confirm with enough testing. The proximity to router doesn't appear to make much of a difference. I have reset router, changed channels, including testing on both 2.4 and 5ghz. I love the device but this is very frustrating so far

I have a dual band AP. I have tried different settings on the nexus but still the same thing. My Samsung galaxy nexus phone gets twice the coverage. So you don't think it's specific to the N10? I was going to call in for warranty replacement as it's doing it again today.
Same thing here. Especially bad with Bluetooth on. Using crappy D-Link.

Nexus 4 vs at&t htc one x+

Ok so I was originally going to try the nexus 4 but of course missed out. I ended up with the htc one x+ and nice device but definitely has wifi issues like when screen turns off it loses connection 90% of the time for alot of users not just me. Also signal is spotty around the house. Bluetooth audio in my car sounds pretty bad.
My question is does the nexus 4 have any of these issues, or similar? I'm about to order it if not.
For me it doesn't have the problems your talking about.. But it sounds like I was one of the lucky ones out of the bunch that came in..

My cell signal is noticeably worse and I've seen others complain about poor wifi reception and poor bluetooth support. Use search, there are plenty of issues with the N4 it is just a matter of how bad they will affect you, for me the wifi reception has been fine and I don't use bluetooth audio.
I am on my 3rd One X because of the wifi issues, when you can get it to connect well it stays connected even when you leave that hotspot (keeping you from getting any notifications). Sometimes when I go into a Starbucks it grabs on to their wifi and will not let go unless I turn wifi off.
I honestly mostly use my Galaxy Nexus still (and have a Nexus 4 on the way to replace that) because I so much prefer stock android. The One X with Sense does some things that drive me NUTS like the wifi and the horrible multi tasking. An example of the multitasking agony is if you are on a web site and you get a text message your web site goes away most of the time when you go to return that text and it has to reload when you go back to it. What a pain. I really wish HTC would get over SENSE, it was nice when phone OS's sucked (I am looking at you windows mobile) but now it is just so unnecessary.
The One X is gorgeous, the LTE is incredible when you have it available and the camera is superb. I use it when I am going out somewhere and want to take pictures, or if I will be somewhere where I am mostly on laptop and not really needing the phone that much. I also use it for tethering (via PDAnet) when I am in a strong LTE area, the LTE on AT&T is soooooo much faster than crappy Hotel "high speed" internet. I know you can root the OneX now and get cyanogen mod but I have been down that road before and just ended up making everything look like stock android. It is worth keeping around if you are going to have two phones, but if given the choice between the One X and the N4 I would lean heavily to the N4.
Nexus 4 any day, has a better gpu , vannila android 4.2

I was referring to the one x+ not the one x, but I believe the one x+ has similar issues I'm experiencing.
I had an HTC Sensation that accumulated dust under the screen. That was the last HTC phone i will ever own.

Btw battery is not very good
Nexus 4 is an awesome phone, but HTC One X and One X+ are also awesome.
Nexus 4 is faster and smoother than the HTC one X and One X+ but the music quality from speaker and headphones is a crap load better on the One X and One X+. So much so it is embarrasing.
The Nexus 4 has issues with wifi when the screen is off. Notifications stop coming through for email. This issue does not occur on 3G.
Check for wifi issues thread. This issue is on an official google bug report and affects Nexus 4, 7 and 10.
