[Q] Force HSPA to stay active? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to force CyanogenMod (or even the stock rom) to stay at HSPA? My phone has issues going from 3G to HSPA and staying there (happens regardless of rom). Is there a way to make it stick on HSPA? I'm not too worried about the battery life, it's already pretty abysmal.
Thanks!

I don't know if there is. The reason it does that is to keep unnecessary bandwidth from being used by the phone. It's a quick switch.
Edit: there is the old method of dialing *#*#4636#*#* and selecting wcdma only, but I think it still switches between 3G/4G

There is no way, it's dependent on cellular carrier and not on the phone AFAIK.
The question is - why would you want to? What are the "issues" you're seeing?

my phone is refusing to go up to 4g (HSPA) in a reasonable amount of time. It takes on average 45-60 seconds for it to move up. It's done that no matter which rom I use and it's annoying as pages won't load until it goes to HSPA

Bad. OK, as a very harsh and bad semi-solution you could run a ping once in 5 sec, that would keep your phone's data connection constantly active. But it's no good solution.

I have the same question, but my my touch 4g stays in E and doesnt want to go to H, we send it to htc service for power button replacement, it came like that from htc, now another issue can not hear anything but myself. strange, should I send it back? its been like 4 months.
I am on straight talk and my other phone runs on H with the same sim card

Just for kicks, make sure it's not set to 2G-only mode in the system settings... You never know!

For some reason I cant find it in the settings, any idea where to look for it? I just downgraded to 2.21

I did the *#*#4636#*#* and switched to wcdma only and it seems to make the transition quicker maybe 2 seconds instead of 25 and I'm on the nexus 4

In quicksettings I use the apn switch but leave it on apn.droid instead of disabled (which actually DOES disable it) if I switch to apn.droid then it actually changes the way I connect to tmo... epc.tmobile.apndroid.com...(instead of epc.tmobile.com) I swear I get faster speeds.

That's odd. I've had JL5 since a few days after release and haven't had a single issue with data until today. I see full bars, data activity doesn't do anything except the green "out" arrow flashes but nothing comes in. I just disabled Data network and re-enabled it and now it's worked fine..
Please use proper language when making a thread. I modified the title of this thread because of it. Thanks.
I have similar happen on JL5, after a day or two (or an unknown set of actions). I will no longer be able to receive calls, but will get the VM alerts and be able to dial out. Data connection will then be hit/miss. I put the phone in airplane mode and take it off airplane mode and it works again.

Yeah, its a known froyo bug,it was even brought up several times in google's forum for the nexus one. it wasn't an issue in 2.1,but 2.2 (pretty much every build I've ever used on the G1,N1,vibrant,HD2,and Intercept) has the issue.
i think my phone's radio is broken.. now it doesnt switch between edge and 3G anymore.. stays on 3G
but download speed is really slow..painfully slow.. i was actually happy to get 3G in my room, but it's actually broken? LOL
i installed the signal app by imperial.. it stays on H - 93 dbm with the 3G symbol on the signal bar and consistent 3/4 bars.. what the hell..
hmmm..
maybe tmo 3g coverage has gotten better? but download speed is slow.. my phone may be broken.. ughhh
Check to see if you have it wcdma only. Settings->wireless networks->mobile network. It should be on wcdma/GSM (auto).

im using the stock j16.. i already reset my phone, even reverted to stock jfd and flash via kies last night.. same issue
i haven't even dropped my phone at all.. not a bad drop at least..
I have the same problem on JL5. I just flashed Nero V3 this weekend as my first Froyo rom and I see today I cannot get online at work where 3G is iffy. If i switch it manually to GSM, then data works.
I actually flashed a custom rom hoping to fix an issue like this.
Back on stock my network data just stopped while browsing web pages or anything really. It would give the outgoing arrows but nothing would come back. After about 30 minutes or so it would start working again for a while.
Flashed to nero but it's still as prevalent as ever (maybe for a different reason now lol). Not sure if it's the phone or Tmo's network anymore, but it's not too big of an issue for me so I just have to remember to activate wifi if I need constant data for any period.
I have it set to GSM only because I don't live in a 3G area...

Atrix Loses Internet Connection With AT&T

I've had my Atrix for a couple of days now, and twice internet connection with AT&T just stops working.
Going into airplane mode and then back to normal still does not fix the issue. Wifi works, however this should not be the solution.
Besides AT&T Gimping our HSUPA speeds and not providing an app for the FM Radio, the loss of internet connectivity is pretty annoying.
So far the only way for me to resolve the issue is to shut down or restart the phone.
Has anyone else experienced this? I have not rooted my phone yet because I want to see how things work stock.
Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks!
I had this happen to me 3 times already..among all the issues i am seeing with this device.

Gimping the HSUPA is...but how are not providing an FM radio app and the connectivity problem you're having AT&T's fault? Nobody else seems to be having a problem losing connection (meaning it's either you or your device that's gone bad) and the FM Radio not having an associated app is Motorola's fault.
Assign blame where it's due, plz.

Because AT&T is the APN providing internet access to our phones. Motorola has the FM hardware built in, AT&T is not making use of the FM Radio hardware which is already provided by Motorola.
If I was the only one with this problem, then others would not have stated they have the same issue.
So I blame AT&T when there is no connectivity on my phone because I'm paying them to be my service provider. AT&T also has restricted many features on phones which have applicable hardware.
Besides, you are not the authority as to who I wish to blame. If you don't have anything useful to post, then I suggest you just stay quiet since your reply is just wasting our time.

Mine has done it several times. It seems to happen after the connection drops for a weak signal. Then for some reason never comes back on. It is not just my internet connection, it is my entire signal that never comes back. I can't make calls either.
Same here, several times... id expect a patch coming shortly to remedy some of this BS.
i think all of these network issues all arond may be due to a deadline att has not met and is severely late on its 4g. Its prob updating its system. Just speculation.

I had the same problem today. I turned my wifi on because I was home and then I wanted to test my 3G speed at home. Turned wifi off and then I lost the data connection. Shift only uses 1x data, claims 3G

I generally use my shift at home or work on wifi. This week I'm on vacation and have been using Sprint's network primarily. I was using a CM7 nightly for a while and noticed that I've never seen the 3g icon, only 1x. I confirmed this by installing an app from the market called 'Opensignal' which shows details about your connection, which tower you're connected to, etc.
I flashed to a sense based ROM (Mik) and have the same issue- 1x only. However, it now always displays the 3g logo when data is 1x, even if roaming.
It seems that something in my phone is keeping me stuck without 3g that persists through reinstalls/wipes. I'm hoping there is some type of hidden setting or config option I can look at outside of the standard settings in the system.
Any ideas other than flashing back to stock/unrooted?
You will find that the stock sense rom will show 3G always as well. You can open up the dialer and dial ##33284# Choose EVDO engineering, and look at the state.
And if not in a sense rom *#*#info#*#* will let you view you connection details.
Toasted by Nightly.
Unfortunately I would ruu back to stock, update profile and prl in update section then see if that helps. Run speed tests and keep a record of results to help in the process of elimination. Could it just be the tower you're near or some Podunk town out in the sticks that doesn't have good equipment? Go to a sprint store with working displays. Do speed tests with the display then your phone. Maybe you got a lemon?
You could be roaming or on an old system. Turn roaming off and set network to sprint only and see if that makes any difference. I know years ago I went to my home town in the Midwest and throughput and signal was poor until I went into a major city (like the capital) then speed and signal was good again.
Thanks, I didn't realize HTC always made the 3g logo show- that's really stupid. *#*#info#*#* shows me good stuff and re-confirms me getting 1x only.
Will any of the settings listed attempt 3G data only? I set it to EVDO but it seemed to stay at 1x.

##3282# & ##33284# are your best bet to edit anything if you're not planning on running an RUU, really you shouldn't have to, just turn EvDo only on and see if it even connects. Maybe the 1X towers are stronger than EvDo, if you have it at all.
Reset data profile entirely through ##3282# - you need your MSL - MSL Reader is on the market.
Try that and document your speed results, etc. Then update your prl. If you really want to, then go ahead and apply the 3G speed fix mentioned in Android Development (not necessary but if you're concerned with speed you might wanna try every step.)
If all that fails, you do still have the RUU and start fresh approach. Personally before I'd do anything I'd get ahold of another android device, maybe not HTC, and see what it's doing for speed, etc.

Great info. Using the info code I've set it to EVDO only but it still says its at 1xRTT, even after a reboot(!). My wife has a Sprint LG optimus S- I've looked at its settings and its connected @ 3G so I know whatever tower in my area should connect.
I got my MSL from that app and can get to edit mode via ##3282# but I do not see an option to reset, only to change to other profiles that appear to have the same config. It was choosing profile 1, I changed it to 0 with the same results.
How do I reset data profile?
Edit: ##33284# lists evdo as 0 (disabled) but does update info as to its signal strength and so on. This is all still with the phone set to EVDO only but yet connecting at 1xRTT.
I seem to have it working now. The change I made was ##3282#, EVDO, preferred mode = auto. This was previously set to CDMA. After a reboot I now have 3g.
I'm curious what this is set to for others? I've never been in these screens before and have this feeling that I've never had 3g data (I've had my phone since launch day).
Ive reflashed CM7 and 3g works there too now, i'm seeing the 3g icon for the first time.
Also its quite sneaky that HTC/Sprint only show the 3g icon on a Sense ROM. Had i never installed a non-sense based ROM i'd have never really known that i was stuck on 1x. Shame on HTC/Sprint.

I would like to say this thread has helped me achieve EVDO (ive been 1x also since release). Sadly this doesn't work on AOSP roms for me, but i'm happy just getting what i'm paying for... and have been but haven't received. Its noticeably faster.
BUT.. for noobs not used to the ##3282# menu, after making a change, press the menu button and commit the change. I had gone through these steps changing the drop down and immediately restarting. Apparently you have to manually save these settings.. or at least on my phone.

5 If the 1st 3 steps don't work, you may have to restore to the Stock ROM.

I really like cm and I've had it fully setup to my liking...then when I discovered about opensignal and the whole 1x thing...I feel like I'm missing out on something. I think its more ocd than anything else since cm7 is fully functional anyway...but still. I do hope they figure out what the prob is. I can't wait to go back to cm

No 3G on Nexus S after flashing ROM

I have a Rogers/Fido/Telus Nexus S. I tried a bunch of ROM's, CM7, ASOP, NSColab, Honycomb port. And then I realized that my 3G stopped working. I'm only getting Edge. My baseband version says "NO DGSXXXKB1", in the bootloader, carrier info says ATT. Any ideas?
do I need to re-flash the GRI40 radio again?
Same problem here. Initially all was working fine, then I tried to play with 2G/3G settings in Power Widget (CM7) since then, I am only able to get Edge connection.
I reset, changed firmwares, went back to my original Nandroid backup, no help.
I was also getting the Roaming Icon indicator on Fido's network, even though I purchased the Fido branded Nexus-S...
Tried changing Radio, KB1 and KB3, still no go.
I have owned Nexus One, Desire, Desire HD, Samsung Galaxy-S and Nexus-S
Never had issues except with Samsung phones!
Anyway, relocked NAND and this phone is going back.
Same. I was ASOP and the 2G was enable by default. I changed it to 3G and never saw 3G again. I thought swapping radios would do it, apparently not. Really weird. I guess I'm returning mine as well. Hopefully Future Shop will not snoop around too much.
Do you think odin would work?

Had the same problem. For some reason it was on the wrong band (if that's possible). in the *#*#4636#*#*, phone information, menu, select radio-band, USA, and fixed!
Still getting no 3G/H on my CM7. I even tried the *#*#4636 method, still no go. However I can surf the browser to sites like google, facebook etc. But whenever I want to sync my google acc, I will get a network error. Wtf? One thing that I noticed is that, my signal bars won't "light up" (but I can surf the net). Another thing, after flashing to CM7, my build number changed to GRI40 instead of GRI54 in the settings on stock. Maybe that is the problem?

I tried changing it to CDMA preferred and it changes itself back.

Put this into your dial pad: *#*#4636#*#*
Then hit Phone Information
Then hit the menu button and select radio band, the select corresponding Country.
USA will fix our issues.
I found a dirty workaround for this problem. Turn on airplane mode, then turn it off. Worked for me.
Same issue for me on the Nexus One. 3G icon is there when phone is idle. As soon as I try to do anything data-related (ie. browser) it switched to an H.
Tried setting to USA, no dice. APN is internet.com
crap I guess no root for my nexus S until this canadian carrier thing is resolved...
I thought i would throw in my experiance
I bought a Nexus S from Telus, and i am using it with a Sasktel Sim on Bell/Sasktel network (live in sask but have a national account from Bell) and on stock, i could never get H.....only the 3g would show up. But that was short lived because i flashed CM7 on it and the H now appears and works perfectly fine
So i dunno if its a Rogers frequency thing/problem, but the phone works great on HSPA on Bell/Sasktel
Cheers

Battery Saving Tip: GSM Only Mode!

Ok, this may seem VERY obvious for many, but thought it was worth a mention.
On the N7105, under Settings > Wireless & Network > More Settings > Mobile Networks,
the "Network Mode" option has LTE/GSM/WCDMA (Auto/4G), GSM only(Edge/2G), WCDMA only (3G/HSPA+) .
When using data in passive mode, like letting emails, notifications, contacts, s/media etc sync in the background, if you leave it on GSM only, I'm guessing it'll take up a lot less battery.
And every now and then when you need to browse or stream etc, you can temporarily set it to LTE/Auto or WCDMA depending on the data load (like WCDMA for audio streaming; LTE/Auto for video streaming).
I'm sure there's widgets that do it from the homescreen too.
And I guess the same applies for the N7100, except for the LTE part.
For anyone on 3 in the UK wanting to try this, 3 doesn't have a 2g/GSM only network.
Thanx for the tip
While this is true, I can't stand it. This is coming from me! I used to keep my Blackberries always on 2G. But the problem is if you do anything OTHER than receive emails or send messages, then it's too slow.
Not to mention anything over data via 2G or 2.5G (Edge) cuts off your phone line as it's using the data connection and you can't handle voice and data over over 2 or 2.5G. Be warned! You're going to miss a lot of phone calls!
If you receive a call it will cut out the data connection. Not the other way round
You won't miss any calls...
By the way everyone, check out opera mini! Set image quality to low and pages load pretty quickly over 2.5g and decently over 2g.

Cmon guys. . This phone is the mother of all smart phones in regards of battery. ..you need these tricks only if you are stuck on a desolated Island. ..
handwritten from my note 2 (N7100)
I will also have to agree with the previous post. I get almost 2 solid days if not a little more of battery life on this thing. Changing the 4G setting only takes away the full ability of what my "little monster" has to offer.

Actually, yeah!
It happens to my mom and me all the time. At my moms house she doesn't use wifi, and she leaves it on GPRS. if she's chatting on whatsapp, the phone call goes to the answering machine because it's being transmitted over the same radio! So her being online holds up the line. I'd suggest you try it Turn on GPRS and browse the web and while loading a site give yourself a call.
Never ceases 2 amaze me how people use all kind of tricks, from Uv, Uc, to what the op does...etc etc...ending up with nothing more than a dumb phone with a big screen!
I paid the full price n I want to use the full potentiel, n how big of a deal is it to plug to a power outlet? unless ur in the middle of nowhere, in which case u'll have no use 4 the phone anyways!
Peace 2 all.
Well, people only end up "using" the phone for a few hours (in terms of screen time), and for the majority of the day, it's just passively doing it's thing. So if you had some widget set up for a quick 2/3/4G swap, for the great majority of the day, it wouldn't really make a difference in your experience with the phone. It'd just mean you wouldn't have to worry about running low on juice when you actually ARE using it for content/media/social media etc.
But that is, if you can be bothered The battery's great eitherway!
Re: missing calls on 2G when data is on, I guess it might be carrier specific (as to whether they prioritize pushing through phone calls over data); wouldn't really know. But in my case, the phone calls seem to tend to come through...
Anyway, as I do tend to use the phone quite a lot (multi tasking, a/v streaming, photography/editing, media uploading and more, all at a 'decent' brightness) and am out and about till late regularly, I've realized, putting in that little bit of effort when I'm not doing all that makes a noticeable difference by night time.
But if/when all else fails...spare battery

This is exactly what I do when I'm not really using the phone too much and its mostly in my pocket. Taking it out for a few minutes every now and then I use Opera Mini and the speed over 2.5g is acceptable enough. This is a huge battery saver if you need the phone to last as long as possible when you know you'll be away from a charging point for a few days.

if anyone knows of a widget that can directly toggle between 2G and 3G or 4G, i'd love to know about it because samsung implemented network switching differently from AOSP so apps that work on AOSP doesn't work on samsung, at least as far as I can tell. Even having root is useless, I still can't find a widget capable of directly toggling the networks...

For the time being, I've to a shortcut widget to "Mobile Networks" (Power Toggles -> 2G/3G) on my homescreen, and I switch it from there. It's one extra click, but I guess I can live with it!

I've got a widget for the shortcut too, but it's more than 1 extra click right? You have to click the widget, then Network mode, click the mode you want, then click OK, then it will swap modes. That's 4 clicks. On AOSP based roms, it's just 1 click. Guess it's probably a limitation of samsung roms.
So when I posted about switching the original note 1 to edge or gsm only to save battery everyone told me I was crazy and it didn't save any battery but now this is a tip?

Actually, come to think about it you're right! I guess I'd just gotten used to it.
Wonder if there was a way to do it via 'Tasker'?

You would have been right! it definitely does. The battery consumption difference between 4G and 2G is fairly significant...

I tried it on my previous S3 before and Tasker couldn't toggle it either.
Related to the missed calls when on 2G.
That depends of wich model you're using.
CDMA (example: Sprint) will allow you to use data, but data connection will not be available if you place a call. And if you're browsing the web, or downloading something, calls go directly to voicemail
GSM (example: AT&T) will allows you to browse data when you're on 2G, BUT, you can be able to receive calls even if you're downloading something, but the data connection will me cut off until you finish the call.
That's the main difference about how the modems and radio works between each technology.
