AT&T and Google Wallet - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My current HTC One X doesn't support Google wallet on AT&T, what are the chances of Google wallet working on the Nexus 4 with AT&T?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app

Good chances I'd think, because AT&T shouldn't have any say with a carrier unlocked Nexus

Man I sure the hell hope not. I would love to use Google Wallet, since most of the places I visit on a daily basis would allow me to use this feature.

Does s3 actually have Google wallet?

I was on the target site looking at getting it for the unadvertised $150 sale and saw it says it can use Google wallet on att.

I just loaded it up and it says basically hasn't been verified/ allowed in my country (US) or carrier (AT&T)

Ok i was curious about that because i was led to believe that att blocked the use of it.

It is possible to get it working by side loading a hack verson of google wallet as i did it and it worked but you have to have cm9 ! Which the atnt verson doesnt have yet.

Root should be sufficient to have the hacked version of Google Wallet working, a custom rom like CM9 should be completely unnecessary.

the only carrier to support Google Wallet is Sprint. you have NFC capability which you can use to use a hacked Google wallet but no AT&T supported Google Wallet.

Thats what i thought but you get stuck on the initializing device stage. Well It is the international version i have so try it on your and lets get the free 10 dollars to as many people as possible . On another note... be EXTREMELY CAUTIOUS when using wallet as if you do not delete the data from within the application (not in app manager) you will render your secure element unusable as thats what i did to mine and am currently in the process of RMAing my phone.

But can you run the wallet, initialize it, load the prepaid google card, and have a transaction?

You get that error as soon as you load it. In other words, it shuts down as soon as you run it.
How secure or trustworthy is the hacked version?

Will all Nexus 4's be sim unlocked?

I want to buy one from one of the carriers in Ireland whenever they start selling it but I don't want to get it if it's locked. I know Vodafone said their Galaxy Nexus was locked when in fact it wasn't.
All boot loaders can be unlocked, but it may be sim locked if you buy from a carrier rather than from Google.

I'm worried about it being sim locked.
So the only way to find out is to ask the carrier you buy it from. Or buy direct from Google so you know its definitely unlocked.

I can't buy it directly from Google in Ireland and I don't trust the carriers because they've already lied in the past.

The sellers on Ebay can help you get the Nexus 4 from Google for you
At the time of release, the Nexus 4 will only come in an unlocked version. Whether that changes in the future is anyone's guess, but it really looks like Google was upset with how the locked versions of the Galaxy Nexus were treated. I would bet anything they are going to refuse to let any carrier sell a locked version of their phone in the future.

I will have to find a reputable buyer but if I do then I don't mind using ebay. I got my GS3 from a company selling it on ebay in the US.

I hope you're right but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Will Nexus 4 have different versions like GN has? How we see OTAs happening?

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
As far as I can tell, there is only one version with pentaband GSM and support for T-Mobile's 42mbps HSPA+.
Also, you posted this in the wrong forum.
Hey!
Thanks for the message and sorry for using the wrong thread.
I more meant yakju and co Rom versions. It appeared that GN doesn't receive OTA updates depending on the version we have. Depending on ur version, you will get it from Google or from Samsung, and clearly not at the same pace.
I was wondering if it would harmonized to be Google only with the Nexus 4.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
It should all be one version this time.
Google has gone a different route this time due to issues regarding the Galaxy Nexus release. There will be one version (for now)
Google will have 100% control of OTA updates for every Nexus 4 in the world. This time around, Google is not letting any carrier or manufacturer get in the way of their device, like what happened with the Galaxy Nexus.
Thanks for the replies.
i don't want to play the devil's advocate here but is there anything which has been communicated officially which would confirm that good news?
Thanks again.

I'd say you are 100% save if it is possible to buy it in the Play Store in your country. Otherwise, the situation for the Nexus 7 should be similar for what will happen with the Nexus 4. Don't know anything about that one though.
Well well... from the news I see on engadget, apparently TMobile in the US will block their subsidized phones not allowing wifi calls. To me it looks like a Tmo rom version to block this feature.
That would then confirm multiple roms for the Nexus 4.

Good thing I chanced upon this thread first. Was gonna ask the same thing. The whole yakju thing for the gnex was a pain despite the ease in converting. Nice to know that this time around, Google will keep to just one build

If you want accurate news stop reading Engadget. T-Mobile confirmed they are not including their UMA calling app. This is nothing new. No nexus devices have ever officially had it. This isn't news more like fud. They are not blocking anything on the operating system level.

T-Mobile has ZERO control over the software on the Nexus 4. None whatsoever. Google has not bothered to implement carrier-specific features like T-Mobile's wifi calling into the phone.

Wallet?

I am not sure whether this belongs in q&a or apps, but does anyone know yet if Google wallet will work on the N4 T-Mo's selling? Wallet is 'not compatible' with T-Mo's nexus s (but you can side-load it and it works fine).

Should be in Q&A

It should work exactly the same as the Play Store N4
Yes it works. I bought from t-mobile (US) today and it comes pre-loaded.

TMo N4 is 100% the same as the Play Store N4, just more expensive

Do you think google wallet will work out the box for T-Mobile variant?

Just what the topic says. Or will we need to root to get it to work.

Doubt it. NFC only works on CDMA Note II, and Verizon version blocked it. Verizon wants to launch it's own system to do it. You will most likely have to get a hacked APK.

I have not tryed it, but Google Play says it is compatable with my Galaxy S2 T-Mobile (T989) running Jedi Mind Trick, Android 4.1.2.

Remember GW recently updated to have a non-NFC version available to pretty much any Android phone. However, only the Nexus phones and I believe recent Sprint phones support NFC payments in store.
Some folks using different Xposed modules have been able to get it to work on their ATT or Tmobile phones, but for the non-modded community, it's generally been no.
So I wouldn't expect it to work out of the box. You'll need to use Isis most likely.

I was referring to Note II handsets.
T-Mobile has disabled the use of Google Wallet on ALL THEIR PHONES in favor of ISIS. I'm sure there will be a work around sooner or later but out the box you will not have GW access.
