What's the max screen time one should get? - Galaxy S III General

As per title...

a very subjective question, site to variations in usage, but to give a rough idea, 6 hours is reasonably good, you would expect that if you were browsing over WiFi, listen to a bit of music and make a couple of calls.......but as I said, a highly subjective question

that tends to use more battery, especially if signal is a bit weak, so expect a bit less.....there are a lot of posts in q&a regarding battery life and how to improve it, so having a good read will help you nail down any battery drain problems

The average I get is 4 hours. That includes 50mins of calls, 1 hour of wifi usage, 15 mins of gaming, and just using a few applications. My 3G and mobile data are off so I'm going to assume that my battery life is pretty bad! I don't understand how people claim 5-6 hours of battery life. I've tried everything (no gaming, no calls, hardly any internet) but I can never reach that magical number.
Plus, Android System consumes a lot of my battery on JB.

Anywhere from 4-8 hours is what I get depends if you have sync on or what apps you use browsing get easy 7 hours screen on
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app

well my average is 4.5 hours without powersaving mode on ..wifi on everytime the screen is on sync on and with powersaving mode on i get like 5h or more same wifi on sync on

I get around 4hours normally, which includes music through headphones for 6-7 hours and sending about 150txts along with a bit of browsing and general messing about.

4hrs - 5hrs. Wi-Fi and data on, screen medium brightness, powersaving off, mainly just browsing and texting. I'm happy, gets me through to bed time.

Having wifi/bluetooth/GPS etc all cause bad battery drain and can cause drain like you described depending on which rom you have installed and which apps you have on your device. Also disabling 'incoming beams' in settings also helps improve battery.
Do a search for 'battery' and you will find numerous threads on battery drain and causes.
Also check to make sure you have no apps running in the background which may add to your drain.
thank you fallen spartan. responding to your post, i am using dutty 3.3 xt rom and it absolutely kills battery, even listen to music for an hour already drains 20% if i actually use my phone to watch a 60 min of videos, 2 hours of music, and play 5-10 min of teeter, my phone does not even last the day. not even close to it. i cant really find an answer looking at other threads cuz they r way worse than my issue. but still for a high-end device like this to have this low of battery life frustrates the hell out of me

Craz,
Well, the thing is, battery technology is the slowest improving tech compared to every other hardware piece in mobile technology. There are definitely much better forms of battery technology, but there is still a while before it even reaches us consumers.
Cheers.

WIFI drains battery fast unless you select best battery mode (maximum power save) and got it mostly idle, messenger or light websurfing doesnt drain the battery has fast has streaming music or downloading some files. The drain caused by heavy wifi use also harms to much the device thus reducing his life and mostly killing the battery much faster. It's just the way things work, don't blame the device for it because it's the same on all devices.

Don't blame battery technology, wifi wastes to much power in form of heat and most of the time they are using to much power than they need to send the signals, they should be more energy efficient.

Post Your Battery Drain Time!!!

Hey, post your battery drain time, for your original included battery. Vote also!
Please try to do it using this method, to keep results consistent and more accurate.
Fully charge your battery, once fully charged, reboot your phone, this will reset the "Time since boot" to zero. Then use your phone as you normally do, once the battery is about to die, dial in *#*#4636#*#* choose battery information, then please post your "Time Since Boot." This time should be reflective of the time it took for your battery to drain.
From full charge, to basically empty, my battery icon is flashing... the max I've gotten is 25hrs.
I have screen set to lowest level
only gmail is actively synced
bluetooth off, haptic feedback off
black background
I make a few calls, play maybe an hours worth of Angry Birds, and use the internet for probably an hour.
Please post your results, and how you use your phone! Thanks
Oh ya, I've also tested with and without Juice Defender, didn't help increase my battery life at all, so I uninstalled it.
16-20 hours on mine, using Juice Defender.
Juice Defender says it helps my phone x1.97... I believe it. My battery life sucks without it.
Please post how you guys/gals use your phone, and R-U a heavy moderate or light user

I have:
Gmail Syncing
Screen to medium brightness
games for about 30 minutes
internet for about 40 minutes
youtube for about an hour
music for a hour
All that, I do everyday. I usually have a little bit left after doing that.
I only got 5-8 hours a day before I let the battery COMPLETELY die, then my battery improved.

I usually have to recharge after 2 days of normal use.
Internet, few games, web browsing, a lot of texting. Airplane mode when going to sleep. Hardly use it at work.
Id say about 30 hours at max.
15 hours over-using it.

Auto mainly but i adjust sometimes upwards, as ICS auto brightness can be a bit too dark for me sometimes.
I turn wifi, gps off when im not using it, NFC is off if that makes a difference. 3g is on always. Nothing special, I just "use it" as I normally would.

No idea feel free to ask me specific questions!
what apps have you used in this 2+ day period?? games? streaming video? web-browsing? These are the most common uses and they are also the biggest battery killers. I'm sure if I had my phone in airplane mode & barely used it at all I could get better battery life than that. Please give us more details on the specific apps, etc. you ran in this period (to the best of your memory, of course )

Hmm probably only an hours worth of "apparatus" - game, good couple of hours on google reader, facebook etc. no more than an hour on the phone.
my "normal" usage really; not trying to be overly conservative, but also not constantly on. certainly nothing to suggest that I'm getting any worse battery life than I did on 2.3.x
Next time you get this kind of usage from a full charge down to zero let us know your screen on time please.

Battery life stats don't mean much if you don't really use the phone for those 2 days. I'm at 16hours with 66percent left.
Sent from my Nexus Ssssss http://www.baronsofbull****.com/nexus.png
Here's mine. A day and half. Similar battery performance with GB even though that Android OS is way too high (higher than Screen)
Yes; that Android OS' looks like a statistic and therefore has a 87.8% chance of being made up on the spot (like that one!).
This is a sample of my battery life and quite unusual for me; Mobile Standby is the highest because I spent five or so hours in an area with very poor coverage, when it could get a signal it was 2G.
Wifi is on when I know I have a hotspot I can use. AutoSync off unless I need it. Bluetooth wasn't used. Screen brightness mostly at the minimum with some time at Auto. Latitude constantly running in automatic update.
Screen on time was 2 hours, 30 minutes and that included approximately 20 minutes of Google Maps (not Navigation).
The biggest difference I've made on my device is to log out of Google+. My use is mostly checking two Gmail accounts, browsing the web, using DropBox / Documents-to-Go, texting, some photography.
Disabling Latitude's AutoUpdate stops the device from waking up with the screen off (all those little blue ticks on the use bar) and makes a big difference to battery life when I'm on the move.
How can you guys take screenshot on stock?
Hold down power and vol. down simultaneously for a second or two for a screenshot.
Also, nice battery life. I've been running about a day with ~50% left, 2 hours of screen time and somewhere around 30 - 45mins gaming. WiFi on all day and calls/texting was minimal.
Have a look https://plus.google.com/u/0/105051985738280261832/posts/FV3LVtdVxPT More insight regarding Android OS from google engineer.
I am running stock 4.0.3 ICS and battery lasts only 10-11 hours.(Data Disabled, Occasional Wifi Use, Brightness reduced to minimum.).

What's your screen on time during the ten hours?

The SOT Thread (Let's try to get the longest SOT)

Intent of this thread:
This thread is created with the intent to expound on everyone's various Nexus 6 Kernel Settings, System Settings, Apps used, and what you are doing to get the most SOT (Screen On Time). Let's try to keep the thread as clean as possible and organized. The Best 5 SOT will be copied to a reserved space below and replaced with any SOT that beats it. Your best settings must not compromise performance beyond what is needed by the average user. Screenshots are highly encouraged when posted with final SOT prior to being put into slots of recognition.
Prerequisites to participate in thread:
You must be using the Motorola Nexus 6
Posting
When Posting try to always maintain your list of your current settings for others to see, always make sure you mention what kernel you're using, what rom you are using, and try to keep things in a clean list as shown in this example below:
Rom: Chroma
Kernel: Stock
SOT: 5h 20m
CPU
CPU MAX: 1958 MHz *
CPU MIN: 300 MHz *
CPU Gov: Interactive
CPU Boost: 0ms
Sync Threshold: Disabled
Input Interval: 0ms
Input Boost Frequency: 883MHz *
Wi-Fi
Keep Wi-Fi on During Sleep: Always
This allows users to easily compare their settings to yours. Also if you wouldn't mind sharing what apps were listed in your top list of battery consumption that could also be beneficial for users looking to maximize SOT and overall battery life. SOT can vary on the habits of the user, so it's important to know what habits and apps are being ran to contribute to your overall SOT.
Example of app listing:
Consumption
Screen: 57%
Android System: 6%
Cell Standby: 5%
Automagic Premium: 5%
This will allow users to compare their app usage to other users and try to pin-point what takes up the most battery usage.
OUR GOALS
Maximize SOT
Maximize Overall Battery Life
Keep thread as clean and organized as possible.
Keep and maintain lists of our settings
Minimal amounts of comments to make things easy to navigate.
Keep things on topic.
Top 5 SOT
Reserved Space for Top 5 SOT List
i guess my 7.5 hour sot doesnt count as its not posted here? anyways, with real use and not just getting the highest sot thats possible kind of use, every single persons phone will differ. why? because every single person uses their phone differently. different apps, different processes, camera, flashlight, how bright i have my screen, among many other things. so, having any kind of sot just shows that you actually use the phone. and with my experience here on xda, im going to flat out say that this will be a foolish thread. and again, that said.. have fun
gsam says I have 4 hours and 45 minutes AVERAGE screen on time per complete charge since February. That is higher than I would have guessed from occasionally looking at my battery stats (I would have said 3.5 hours average). Maybe there are some subtleties in how that number is calculated.
Stock with franco kernel. 50% auto brightness. Dark themes everywhere with layers etc (although I've only had those dark themes over the last month)
Isn't screen brightness the key factor here?
Personally I gave up since I have such weak signal at my house. I usually get around 2 to 3 hours SOT but that's with around 80% brightness. Even if I lowered it, the radio would be top consumer.
A phone screen uses some battery but not a ton. Just look at some of the smartwatches out there that can get their screens left on for 8 hours or so on 300 mah batteries. Our screen on time is terrible because android is a totally inconsistent mess. That's why one day with similar usage the phone lasts forever and the next it's dead really fast.
Although iOS has it's flaws, it's greatest strengths are in consistency and resource management. That's why apple can make phones with batteries under 2000 mah, with 2gb of ram, and still be less laggy than android and have batter battery life. It's to bad Google won't just stop with their constant useless updates to the android os and spend a year focusing in only increasing efficiency of the os.

the screen uses the most battery, period.
and your greatest problem isnt android, but how you set up and use your phone. as i have no issue with screen on time(get between 5-7h, 5h without any effort). nor do i have issues with lagginess, ever!
Im with Simms. I average 5-7 hours of sot also. I just use it and don't cripple the cpu. Killing cores & turning town frequencies only makes it work harder thus for using more battery. Its like a smart car , pathetic little engine only average 36 while your fully loaded Buick lesabre averages 33. Better power to weight ratio working the engine less. I turn CPU boost frequency up to 1728 and run it at 900-1000ms. Run CPU boost at 250ms with all 4 cores on always. Also turn go high speed load to 50% from 85%. Always running in beastmode. Cool & fast.

You know, some people (Americans, just like you) get over 4 hours of SOT and claim to have not so stellar signal.
I think your signal is only part of the problem. I mean look, I can't get more than 4 hours of SOT, and I generally have 95%+ signal.
Speaking of problems... I can't get more than 3.5-4 hours (best case scenario) of SOT, regardless if I'm on Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G, have low signal, have full signal etc.)... If you could help me see what's wrong with my phone, you're more than welcome to join this thread.

I already know it's my signal. Have been testing it for almost a year to find the issues. Being in America is a relative term. Where I live signal is not the best and when I leave town you lose signal all together for hundreds of miles.
Mine has been getting worse and worse as time goes by. No matter the ROM or kernel or brightness or signal. The note 7 better be a real nice phone cuz I can't make it to the next Nexus.

? the gs6 had a notoriously small battery
Sent from my G8141 using Tapatalk
3rd charge, stayed at home all day connected to wifi. Browsing, YouTube, whatsapp, took 20+ pics, no gaming. Wowed, truly.
How do you reach such runtimes Oo? I barely get beyond 4-5h SoT with regular use.

Better to ask what usage they are doing with their device...
More than 8h on a row, meaning either watching movie / series or listening music screen on.
Which level of screen brigthness ?
Wifi, 4G, etc ...
And which running app ?

GSam screenshot explains most..
I browse a lot, chat a lot (whatsapp), some YouTube (short reviews), no series or movies, no streaming music or listening music while screen on
last post were almost solely on wifi, previous one mixed 4g wifi, and no I don't put screen time out to ridiculous minutes just to achieve sot. All this on my regular use. With similar usage, this is better than my previous s8+ exynos (6-7ish hours).
Disabled Google now as I don't plan to use it at all nor the assistant.
45-50% brightness on auto
Turn off location when I don't use it for navigation
Rarely use phone phone calls, only short minutes in whatsapp call
The battery is just that good for my usage.

1.2% seems too much for a keyboard.

No offense, it was just to share that our personnal usage are very different and affect drastically our battery and SoT.
for eg. only playing (Clash of Clan or Trials Frontiers) leads my SoT down to 3h45.
While doing other stuffs like you described allow me to reach nearly 6h SoT.
I also have a very bad 4G/LTE coverage and it affects a lot my results.
You are having very good result btw.

None taken bro. Indeed usage between each users will be different. Which is why I usually compare to my other devices I own or previously owned. My typical usage everyday comprised a lot of typing in chat apps with customers. Obviously I will get more screen on time than a person who plays game on their phones.
My previous phones sot, my typical usage: (i owned a lot of phones cuz I sell phones for a living lol)
My friends brag about their iPhone 7 plus and it's stellar battery life. But with my typical usage, I never get past one day mark without needing to top up.
S8+ was awesome, but in my typical usage of mixed Lte and wifi, it rarely goes past 7 hrs mark. On full wifi tho, I can reach 8-9 hrs of sot. This was all achieved after disabling a lot with package disabler.
Op3t: wifi 6.5 hrs, Lte 4-5 hrs huge difference between wifi and Lte
P10+: wifi 6.5 hrs, Lte 5hrs
Pixel xl: wifi 6.5hrs, Lte 5.5 hrs
HTC 10: wifi 6hrs, Lte 5.5-6 hrs
XZ premium on the other hand, my norm is 7-8 hours mixed Lte wifi, 8+ on wifi.
Typical day of streaming, texts, two email accounts and some browsing. Only thing missing is WiFi tether, as I was at home today. Much like other Sony devices I've had, battery life borders on outstanding.

Thank you mate :fingers-crossed:
Battery life is pretty good here. With bluetooth on (for the bluetooth headsets), youtube, browsing, some gaming, and talking on messenger/whatsapp, my SOT is between 6-7 hours. Compared to my old phone where 2 hours and half was awesome for it, this phone makes me more than happy with its battery,
Fantastic screen on time
I was getting about 7hs of SOT on the the first 3 or 4 days.. but now, the battery consumption is really high Im struggling to get 3..4hs.... Gonna try a hardreset.
