I'd like to make a recommendation to rom devs: - Nexus S General

Please stop using the rom version space as a spot to put your rom's name. I just called sprint customer support and they told me that a simple version check on the phones reported back roms that were not built by their team....then the tech proceeded to read off the exact info that my phone displayed. It's not good when sprint can simply ping our device and see that it's reporting back custom rom names, version numbers and everything. This really puts a damper on things when you need to do a device exchange for something that's totally unrelated to anything flashing could do.

Or you could just flash your phone back to stock when you need support. Like we've always done.

One does not simply tell devs what to do.

or you can open your build.prop file with root explorer and write in "sprint sucks"(or anything else) instead

You should tell sprint to basically stfu. Stop delaying updates and don't worry about what software is on your phone period.

Personally I don't think it's any of Sprints business what WE do with OUR phones and DEVS do with THEIR roms. As long as the bills paid they can kiss it in my personal opinion. Not as if anyone at a call center really knows what they are talking about anyhow. They are all reading from prompters and how to guides anyhow. Most of Sprint issues are on THEIR side anyways. WE obviously can't tell Sprint what to do.

yes, well I didn't exactly expect the employee to ping my build.prop from her machine, so it never occurred to me that I may have to flash stock just to call them. Obviously if I had gone down to a store or repair center I would have gone completely stock with a fresh wipe to look as if I had just tried restoring my phone to fix any issue. But like I said, it never even crossed my mind that I would have to be paranoid about it and flash just before calling them.
BTW, I totally agree....it's none of their damn business what firmware I'm running!!! I don't remember signing anything saying I would agree to keep stock firmware and kernel on the device the whole time in order to keep my service/warranty active!! I actually distinctly remember the conversation i had with the mobile dept manager at best buy when I bought my ns4g...and he told me they would accept a return for exchange with a device that's got an unlocked bootloader, custom rec, has been flashed & is rooted, etc He even told me if it got smashed to pieces the warranty would cover it. I'm not sure how truthful the last part is, but he said it
anyway, my point is we now have proof that they can ping your device and read what build you are running....and we know that means we have to be extra careful when calling too, not just visiting a store.
oh, btw...she also told me that the last attempt I made at an ota was in may when ics was released...so the fact that I had a jb build number proved I had been flashing. This means we also now know we need to take an additional step to update to the newest version via OTA at least one time prior to contacting support.

I guess its good into to know for those on sprint. But in the end screw them. I would not for a second change anything or worry one bit about it. If they gave me any crap I would tell them to f off and kill my plan and I would never pay it.
Like I did years ago over a beef with them. I was so furious with them and I actually wanted to hear from the CEO. Told them f off. Told the debt collectors to screw off. Just thinking about that nightmare again got me ticked off.

Hi guys,
As you can tell by my username, I am completely new to Android, and naturally to hacking it! Currently I have a stock hero, and and contemplating rooting and flashing it, although I'm having some reservations. While this is my first post, I have been lurking and reading the forums for 2 or 3 weeks now since Damage got a hold of the first Sprint leak. While the whole process looks pretty simple, I have seen how random many of the problems, such as the audio issue are. Some people seem to have no problems, while others have a s#!tstorm of them.
I am not normally one to fix things that aren't broken, and (knock on wood) I haven't really had any of the issues others with stock phones have had. I have never once had a problem with sending or receiving MMS, and most of the lag and quirkiness I am able to live with. On the flip side of that coin, I have read up on Google's Android dev pages all of the changes and enhancements made in 1.6 and 2.0, and am itching to get them on my phone. Like a lot of other people, I am eagerly awaiting Sprint's official release, but am not holding much hope that it will be here this month.
In any event, since I registered I figured I would just say "Hi," while I decide what to do (becoming impatient waiting for the official) and hope that the novel I just wrote hasn't bored anyone to death

Otherwise, cya around.
welcome in!
welcome aboard! its really not hard to root and try new roms. i would recommend rooting and backing up then trying a stable 1.5 rom like fresh, do a nandroid back up of it then dive into the 2.1 roms. you can always go back to a nandroid back up if you ave issues. read as much as you can first.
i flashed over to the newest fresh with pri=170_03 and prl=60663 and havent had any issues. nothing works quite perfectly (very, very minor issues) but then again stock doesnt either (as you have noticed and commented on).
dip your toes in and have a go. it is worth it. the devs here have done a fantastic job.
cheers,
ryan
Frankly, I see no harm in at least TRYING a custom 2.1 ROM out, since during the process of initially rooting, you are told to do a "nandroid" backup. With that backup, you can go back to the stock ROM should you have unbearable problems with a custom one. (or if you just don't like them..)
It should be noted that when the OFFICIAL 2.1 drops, theres a very good chance that they will have patched the root exploit, leaving you with the stock sprint rom (and bloatware)
My suggestion is this.. Test out a few of the custom roms.. Fresh 2.0d and Damagecontrol 2.06 are great places to start.. If you don't like them, go back to your 1.5 stock or a 1.5 custom rom, and wait for the official 2.1 and a custom rom based off of that..
Just my two cents.
When did this forum become "xda-developers-personals.com"?
Welcome Noobmodder, you will come to enjoy the excellent resources this forum has to offer. Beware though, it could be detrimental to your personal relationships as flashing and modding can be as addictive as drinking and gambling! lol

I don't know what Troy you are speaking of, but my fiance is from Troy, Tn.. So you probably know each other if that's what your troy means... Because from all that I've seen, there's not too many people out that way..lol..
Thanks for the welcome! The main reason I am a little nervous about the whole process is the hero is my only Sprint phone, so I don't have a backup phone if this one gets messed up, nor can I afford one at the moment. But, it's just a phone after all, so I think I'm gonna go for it. I am gonna try DC 2.06, or see what RegawMOD 2.1 has in store for us a little later this evening.
Thanks in advance for any help! We'll see how this goes!

Basically, once you have a recovery image flashed, and a nandroid of your stock rom, there really isn't much to worry about (as far as a brick goes)
Flash away!
Let us know if you need any help. If you have been lurking for a couple of weeks you probably won't have any issues rooting and flashing, but just the same let us know if you do run into any problems.
If you have not rooted yet I recommend using Fresh's kitchen.

Modding is not a spectator sport. You need to decide if you want to get your hands dirty because staying on the bleachers you won't see much
Just make sure you keep reading everything you can find on this forum until you feel comfortable giving it a shot. If there's something you don't understand or something that's bothering you then hold off. It's better to approach modding your phone with full confidence and some knowledge under your belt then find yourself on your knees begging for mercy from Sprint's local customer service czar.
Ok guys!
Just rooted and flashed DC 2.06 and I have a question. Does this version of DC still need the CDMA Auto PRL setting changed like in the past?

I've been monitoring this for a while, and with both Flipz's .03 radio and his .10 radio, I haven't needed to change it. Of course, this is with mulitple restarts thanks to the audio bug.
Disregard this post
It's pretty hard to brick your phone, unless you flash a radio.img incorrectly. Like I said, there's plenty of people that are experienced enough with Android to help you out. Not to mention, almost any errors you encounter will mostly already be documented and have solutions.

This never happens.

Ok. I like to check for froyo often. So im constantly clicking "Update firmware" and " Update Android." It usually checks for 30 seconds or so, then says im up to date. Well now its saying this.

He already said he was on stock DI18 and you would not even get the update being on DK28 unless you odin back to stock.
Furthermore, lets be honest here; we all want the update really bad so we might be getting a little itchy on the trigger finger to say its coming. To the OP, don't take this as me calling you a troll or that you're lying or even that you're stupid, I'm just saying lets all take a step back and try and be rational about things. If the update were rolling out right now, more people would be chiming in to say they were getting it. As it stands I'm going to say that it was just a server error and that its not coming out just yet. Again, everyone needs to take one deep breath and remember not to take things out of proportion. =)
I can confirm that the same thing happened to me today. I was back on DI18 after I put my ext4'd Epic into a boot loop by accidentally uninstalling a vital system app. Figured I'd check for an OTA....hahahahaha
My phone did the same thing on di18, I got tired of waiting for an update and start flashing custom roms. It makes the time go by, and you probably won't care for the Ota once on custom.

its at the point if you want to mod your phone it will be time to leave verizon. the s4 originally was hacked but a update killed that and the update i believe has not been hacked. the bootloaded will be locked on verizon....either stay and hope they crack it or speak with your money
My vote is that root will be achieved but if we get bootloader access we will have to be quick about it since Verizon WILL push an update immediately. But I suspect Verizon has Samsung really locking the bootloader up tight and using the experience they gain from every device prior on what fuses to blow.

I'm not even sure what that means (please speak English), but if you're referring to the allegedly insecure boot.img you posted, that's possibly really good news for N9005 users. It will not help Verizon users at all as each bootloader is carrier specific.

I'd say there's a pretty good chance. The problem, in my eyes, is that DE variants aren't released until 5-10+ weeks after the device goes to the carrier. I'd rather put my faith in the dev community and enjoy my new phone all that time. As I've said before (not sure if this thread or not), early adoption is the key to unlocking and rooting. You don't want to pick up a phone after the first OTA is released by Verizon. They'll have most certainly patched the bootloader exploit (new S4 builds are a prime example and so was the DNA).
why does your service provider verizon block custom roms? what it to them if you install what you want? sounds a bit farked to me...

Have no itch to root...YET!

All,
Just want you to know I have had android phones for the past 4yrs and each and every one I have rooted, installed ROMS, tweeked etc...This is the only phone I feel I don't need to root. I did tweek it a bit by installing ART and disabling some bloatware apps from ATT, but so far, I have not gotten the itch to root yet.
I'm sure it will change, but so far this phone is a beast and I have no issues with it.
Cool...

No you don't, you WANT root. There is a big difference.
I think over the years manufacturers have slowly figured out how to make the stock experience less and less awful. I used to be a flash-aholic on my Droid Incredible but I can see how custom ROMs are becoming more of a personal preference than a necessity.

Sorry, but I guess that is what I was trying to get at with my post. In the past, I would root to optimize the phone, increase performance etc...But with the current state of Android and even this skinned LG, I can live with stock and not have to go through crack flashing. Was terribly time consuming.

Again, you want root. You purchased an item under the assumption that you will always have root, and that may not be the case. You bought an item that doesn't support many devices it seems, perhaps you should have taken that into consideration before assuming every device you buy will have root. Its much easier to go to appradio and look at what is supported, and buying the appropriate device then insisting on needing root to use an item that currently isn't compatible with your phone.
Quit arguing semantics. It is really quite juvenile. Need/want - who cares.

Any way to restore full sd support for kitkat without root?
I will mine tomorrow as soon as I get it lol
I rooted mine the same day I got it, for the same reason I immediately root all my devices. Adfree Android. I can't stand advertisements.....
Lord, the guy was talking about himself and somehow it became about someone else....he is experiencing his thought on HIS rooting experience. You want to go on about how much YOU NEED / WANT root open your own discussion thread and go at it...in YOUR thread.
And thanks OP for your input, thats the same kind of experience I am trying to go for where the stock rom can fullfil my phone desire without needing to root...and when I do will just be to entertain myself

Actually, I bought the Appradio while I had the GS4, which has root. I got it knowing that I would need root, so I STILL have the GS4, and won't be buying the G3 until it has root. I'm not just going to jump to another phone without knowing for sure it has root.
So seriously... Get off your ****ing high horse.

You develop apps, but don't buy a developer phone? That might be the dumbest thing I've ever heard. He bought a niche product, and NEEDS root to play with it, its not for work, lol. Whatever. You need root, and you're a developer, so I'm sure you'll have it figured out in no time at all, Chief.

So... My Verizon LG G4 shipped with "MODIFIED" firmware...

So a lil background on me... I'm very experienced in phone rooting and the like. I work for Best Buy Mobile, and see all the new stuff well before anyone else. I played with the LG G4 a month before release and it was love at first sight. Well I ordered mine thru my concessions line I have thru work and it arrived yesterday. I opened it, activated it and immediately turned on developers options, mainly because I knew some animations were turned off. Well, I had to look at the software version, and it said "MODIFIED".
I purchased the one with the leather back. It is completely stock, I've not even attempted to try root, if we even have it yet. Did anyone else purchase theirs and it have " MODIFIED" software?

I'm not an expert, but that font is NOT the same as on my phone. Looks like it has indeed been customized to a certain extent.
If you're displeased with it, I'd exchange it for a new one.

You can change the font in settings.

My VS986 says same thing. Bought at Verizon kiosk in BJs.

Same here. I imagine activating Developer's Options, and/or turning on debugging does it.
Pretty sure it said Modified before I turned on Dev Opts.

I read somewhere in this forums that a lot of Verizon G4 users claim that it arrived as modified. They suspected that Verizon disabling some functions, such as FM radio, might have caused it and didn't double check to see the software version.
If I were you I'll contact Verizon to double check.

Either way, it doesn't mean anything. To us, regarding root, anyway.
I agree. Sounds like Verizon's build. Nothing more. That doesn't mean it doesn't suck though.

Just checked on my Verizon G4, and it currently says official next to software status.

Woops, sorry about that.
For some reason, I thought replacing fonts required some fancier, higher level customization options.
Probably thinking back to my old iPhone jailbreak days. /shudders

Yeah, I have the VS986 as well, and I show "Official" under status. I have USB debugging on as well. Bought the phone at Verizon this past Sunday

Mine def said modified before I did that. It just struck me as odd. Idk why it would say that.

I bought mine from a Verizon store (not third party) on day 1. I have used Developer Options, USB Debugging, and connected via adb, and my software still says Official. Build is LMY47D, Config is J14.LGE.VS986.0
Yea I'm def not sure why mine says that at all. Mine was shipped to me. I guess it's nothing to really worry about really. Phone flies like I knew it would lol

I picked it up 6/15 at my local Best Buy.
Mine says official.
I picked up mine from Verizon on Saturday, says "Official" .. enabled Developer mode .. rebooted .. still says "Official".
As stated on other threads, 'Modified' or 'Official' doesn't mean anything here.
