[Q] Hulu+ | Best source for high-res playback? - Nexus Q Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm sure this would be child's play for some of you more experienced developers, so help me out!
I have the "Hulu landscape mod.apk" sideloaded on and working beautifully on my rooted Q.
Problem: the hacked apk seems to be from a 480x800 device and is stretched and incredibly pixelated.
How could I take a 10" version (presumably higher res) and use it? Or maybe mod it to use 1080p/720p feed as is? I'm researching this now but thought I would drop a thread here to try a little crowd-thinking.
Thanks, xda!

Best HQ N1 compatible video on web ?

As subject says.
Im trying YouTube but getting mixed results as many of the HQ videos are also super letter boxed((large black stripe top and bottom..ex linkin park new divide video)).
Are there any good videos on the web that are 800x480 or 720x480 that play well on the N1 ?
Not on my home comp so cant convert something. My buddys coming over tommrw wants to see Vids on the N1. Looking for something good to download.
you have pm
wow thats a beautiful clip.
I was hoping for a 'fullscreen' but thats fantastic clip. Thnx.
Hello world!.
Try this. Visit this url: twit.tv/twit
and download either Low or High video resolution link.
BTW, TWIT is my favorite pod/videocast which I am enjoying every week.
I am also using ffmpeg (svn, GNU/Linux version) to convert any movie/video files into N1's playable MP4 format. Very nice quality.
TQ
//This is my first post, after a month lurking in this forum . Eventhough my N1 still locked/unrooted yet, but, I felt happy knowing the potential of N1 + Android.

Is community-added DivX support possible?

Hi all,
So, I'm trying to establish whether it is possible for the community to add DivX support. I see commits like these:
https://www.codeaurora.org/gitweb/q...it;h=69023cf85787ff454ce0549f532f9aecfad2ae29
https://www.codeaurora.org/gitweb/q...it;h=208bf6e29780fd15bfd0f6d6575a26ae78591378
that add at least the start of DivX support. But I haven't been able to get it to build, and even then, it's not clear to me if things like a DSP firmware image or something else (presumably proprietary) is required.
Any insights?
Edit: this was originally posted in the Development section, as it is a development question, but it has been moved to General. There is no question that many people would like Divx and other codec support. This thread was supposed to be specifically about getting Divx support in OpenMax/mm-video working.

Using a program from the market I was able to watch a 720 MKV on my nexus the picture was fine and sound was fine.
Only issue was video was delayed while sound went full speed, other then this it was awesome looking.

Re: DivX support
i don't know what app the other guy is thinking about, but you can find in the market "yxplayer" (trial) and with it you can play at least videos like avi etc etc kn your N1. i think it wilk be hard to find a full free app for that goal. if you find, post here the name please.

LG Snapdragon 2.1 handset touts DivX playback, I wonder if it's a software decoder that can be ported?

Let's talk about encoding methods

When I got my Evo I converted most of my DVD and Blu-Rays with this method
http://www.knowyourcell.com/htc/htc...deos_and_transfer_them_to_the_htc_evo_4g.html
Except I either left the source aspect ratio as is, or scaled it down from 1080 to 720. I have tried the xoom handbrake preset that has been posted a few times, and I'm convinced that the guide above produces better quality videos. I dont believe it's an ultra crisp perfect HD image, but I do think it looks at least DVD quality, and I know that it plays smooth as butter. Post your presets and I will convert and compare various blu-rays I own and post feedback.
EDIT - K, so, apparently animated movies have laggy playback and distorted colors. Audio is fine. What the hell. These same files play flawlessly on my Evo running CM7 in the Gallery app.

i was looking for a thread with just handbreak presets and not 14 pages of complaining about .avi files
Good luck with that! I have been waiting for such details for a while . Didn't mean to offend. I can give you details from my AVS settings if that helps.

Also, just for the record...The rockplayer apk from this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009228
Appears to play the videos I converted for my Evo better, and they loot a lot sharper, when played in Software Encoding mode. The animated files I was having trouble with no longer have issues, and my blu-ray rips look quite a bit crisper.

[Q] 1080p devs explanations and suggestions

As I read everywhere, our A500 has many probs reproducing video at 1080p, worse than this I've to say that I hadn't any luck even with 720p format.
I've tried mani different players, with or without added codecs, with hard and soft decoding, but the results are always poor.
I'm talking 'bout Utube films, but also some H264 or .mkv (perfectly working on every pc or notebook even with am embedded graphic adap.
So, what we're gonna do? wait for a solution embedded into the OTA final 3.1, or is it an hardware problem we are facing right now despite the technical declared data of the various OEMs? Isn't tegra2 capable to manage hi-res videos?
Some guru's technical explanation would be appreciate, in order to clarify this situation, at least to give us good reason to hope or to give up with further expectations...
...and in any case, I'm glad to thank you for thy wonderfull job I do in this forum
some facts,
- stock acer rom 3.1 plays 1080p mp4 material just fine through HDMI.
- it will not be possible to play a 720p movie on tv as 1080p require much scaling and looks lousy.
- desktop is only 1280x800 (close to 720p) so don't expect 1080p just like that, it would look awful(even with 720p its still 4x scaling). (i seen it on folio100) and LG Optimus 2x does it too..
I havent got any avi at 1080p, and no mkv's to test at 1080p.
the WMV 1080p i have did not switch screen res to 1080p when played, so maybe its just for mp4..
the screen Is actually larger... its 1280x800 you get 720 because it removes the bottom bar(this is done so you don't see stretching and it will look horrible)...
you cant get actually 1080... its a mirror... you cant mirror something to make it look bigger, Its just a workaround triggered by the hardware decoder... that gets you the 1080...

Do you mean 720 on the Acer screen or on the TV? Cuz when I play 720p thru HDMI the image is perfect.
Why when I plug my device into my 1080 HD TV I can never get the resolution correct, the closest I can get it is when I set it to wide but I see my device not fitting the screen it is larger, now I am just talking about my desktop not videos.

Motorola Atrix(tegra2 baseD) do 2 separate screens. its indeed possible with tegra2 to have 2 different screen, i ported atrix release to folio100 and had a mediacenter on hdmi + android screen locally on tablet..
like with the 1080p playback, where you have a black screen on tablet, i think thats how 3.x handle it for now.. although its possible (since atrix has done it)
the chipset handles 2 screens fine, since atrix can do it, but vendors making the software is not making it possible, so what Google is doing is not much on this area, only motorola manage to do it, with their ubuntu + mediacenter + android solution.
lets hope someone else makes it.

same issues found on pre-3.x tablets... ElocityA7 managed to fix it, but i dont remember if folio100 got it fixed (as almost no updates happened)
i guess they're starting over,.. my tv in "just scan" mode still shows acer incorrectly.. so its for sure possible to look forward to a fix for it..

i just looked through the atrix section, and it seems that ppl experience only 720p with its mediacenter function, so it might be 2 diff. displays but still only 720p..
so probably not worth spending time on. but they do have some technique to split the picture.
Also..
What about that Bourne trailler ?? How come it plays perfect on the transformer and choppy on the iconia??
Hardware is supposed to be the same' so what is iconia missing??

It played fine on the Xoom with 3.01 too. There was a review of the A500 on youtube a while ago and they were shocked that this trailer played fine on the Xoom but not the Iconia. It still doesn't play in the leaked Acer 3.1. It plays fine on the Transformer and Galaxy based roms though.
Here's the youtube review. The video is tested at around 10:40 to 12:40 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMmS8ObCMbA
my updated kernel I shipped to Dexter for some testing plays that trailer fluent

I know, it's exactly the same as the stock Acer 3.01 rom.
I hope that the leaked 3.1 isn't final otherwise I wonder wtf Acer have been doing all this time.

I'm guessing it's probably got something to do with the 1080p output being disabled for now, since it works with the kernels that have enabled that feature. Just guessing though - we'll have to see what Acer decides to do
On a side note, for people wondering, the video file in question is a 1080p H.264 encoded MP4 file with a rather high bitrate (didn't check the average, but some parts of the video exceeded 12 Mbps).

i dont think its kernel issue..
Bourne movie playys perfectly with Galaxy rom with my kernel "angel" edition, which does not work with the "dextersiconia" rom, where bourne movie stutter.. so its drivers...any acer image has the issue.. so decoding issue is placed in the handling of the containers..
but firmware for chipset is different in galaxy/virt. images, compared to acer stock roms..

Can I render the GUI in 1440p?

I'm fairly sure the answer is no. I've just upgraded to a large 1440p monitor for both my PC and the Shield to use in my small room at university. The Windows PC is obviously perfectly happy to output at any resolution I want, and even prompts me if I use anything other than the display's native resolution. The Shield on the other hand has extremely few settings in every department, including HDMI. I get that Google is trying to simplify their various software for the average user but come on, no option to set the output resolution? Ridiculous. Under Settings, HDMI I've set 'HDMI optimisation' to 'best resolution' mode (that's the only relevant setting I can find). I've then restarted and it still appears that the Shield is outputting 1080p and letting my monitor scale it up (crudely). I'm not only going by my judgement of the image quality. When I take a screenshot it saves as 1080p.
Presumably people with 4K displays aren't experiencing such a problem? The device is, after all, supposed to be 4K60 capable.
I haven't tried any custom ROMs (nor do any current ROMs offer a 10-foot UI as far as I'm aware), I wonder if it would help though?
Nor have I looked into using the Xposed framework (which I've only ever read about and never properly used), though I'm doubtful whether that could help.
My problem isn't with 1080p HD itself. As far as video is concerned I can't even tell much difference between 720p and 1080p at a normal movie viewing distance. It's when any GUI renders at non-native resolution that it becomes really obvious and annoying to me.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nomone.resolution_changer&hl=en
Maybe try this? It's for dropping res to increase performance, but I don't see why it can't increase it too.
This app may also work. It also allows for overscan adjust if you would need that on any other display.

Thanks for the reply and sorry for the delay, I've been moving house.
I got a copy of the .apk for Screen Shift from the developer on that thread and Sideloaded it and used it to change the resolution to 1440p. The result it interesting. Everything on the screen shrinks (presumably in proportion to the increase in resolution).
This proves that the hardware can physically output in 1440p, which is to be expected considering that it is 4K capable. However another reasonable assumption was that the software would be optimised for smoothly coping with 1440p, and it isn't. This is quite disappointing considering that it is a 4K-capable gaming device and that 1440p is a popular choice among gamers in particular.
Curiously I was unable to take a screenshot of what I am describing. I'll attach a photo instead.

so you got thta working somewhat at least. Is everything stretched? It looks fine to me from the picture, but those can only show so much. Unfortunately, the 21:9 market is really a niche, not to say that I don't understand how amazing that they are, I intend to own one someday. Unfortunately for us and Nvidia, Android TV, and ANdroid in general is made to work well with 16:9 ratios as that's what almost every TV, monitor, and phone are these days, or really dang close. On top of that, this is a media box, which you could argue both ways that 21:9 is very nice for ultra-wide movies and also not usefol to many as most if not all blu-ray is 16:9 for most media formats, and games aren't likely optimized for a small niche. It makes sense that they wouldn't add support at this time, and I want support as I would buy a 1440p monitor if they would add support, but it'd be more work for each app, though mostly games, to support an odd ratio, and on top of that, even shield specific games are pretty niche, and then to add a niche feature to a niche product, just isn't monitairly worth the time. Sorry to make this so long, but I wanted to explain the best my tired brain could.
TLDR: It's not worth it for them, but DANG it would be nice. Till then, we have to hope that a monitor will black bar it to 16:9 for us, or that hack to work.

1440p is 16:9, so the 1080p image scales up without needing to be stretched or cropped.
Interestingly with firmware upgrade v2.0 they've added a few more HDMI settings, including one to change the resolution and refresh rate. Unfortunately, despite being connected to a 1440p monitor, the only available options are all 1080p (as shown in the attached screenshot).

Wow, I'm totally not on the ball. Mixing up 1440p with 21:9, sorry about that. It looks like Screen shift did what you needed though. It'd be nice to see that added, but for now, workarounds are there at least.
Hi, im just wondering if the OP ever managed to get his Shield to output 1440p?
Ive been watching some UHD / 2K video trailers on youtube using my PC and i've been blown away by the quality, in particular the "Samsung UHD - Transformers Age Of Extinction (2014)" video ( incase someone wants to check it out).
Ive just upgraded to a Curved 1440p display so I now have a spare 1440p monitor that I would love to use with my Shield TV and finally replace my old plasma tv Ive been using for years. After seeing the quality I can get playing a 2K 60fps video on the display it would be great if I could use my shield tv to play UHD content @ 1440p as the hardware is clearly capable.. I'm just hoping there is a work around to enable it. Even if I need to root my Shield / Install a custom ROM. I've googled and hit a brick wall..
Anyone have any solutions to displaying 1440p @ 60hz on the Shield? (fingers crossed)
Thanks
[Solved] Yes! you can 1440p (2560x1440 @60Hz) with the nvidia shield. just:
1) Enable developer options (search for tutorial ,easy)
2) Go to: Developer Options > HDMI section > Show all supported modes in custom display modes> enable.
3) Settings > Devices Preferences >Display & Sound > Resolution > Select to match the resolution of your monitor.
While you are there, may be you want to force Advanced Display Settings > Dynamic Range to Full to match the full RGB input of your monitor. Mine a Monoprice IPS27 shows washed out colors by default with Nvidia Shield, switching to full RGB solves the issue
Have a good day!
