Check the screen for dead pixels, lifting, ghosting, backlight leakage, etc.
Run some intensive games, watch a hd movie, for 30min or so to heat it up. See if it's stable.
Check connection like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc.
Check speaker at highest volume.
Open as many apps as you need, see the performance.
These are in mind now

thanks but this is my first experience of using tablet . can you give me some details or links to see what these mean?
dead pixel =>as i know there are some apps on android market to test that or should i do it manual ?

lifting + ghosting + backlight leakage

General rule of thumb... If you plan on buying electronics, you should do as much reading about it before you get it so that you can hit the ground running when you get it in your hands.
A lot of what you are asking has been described many times over in the threads with lots of detail.

One question I do have in mind: I have read that some people got a washed-out screen with dull colors. Though, the examples I have seen on the net is a lot worse than the display I have! Mine seems quite normal at first, but the contrast is low and the colors seems muted. They don't sparcle, and white seems overexposed.
Is this a defect? Or is this "normal" among Nexus 7 users?
I've read that the calibration is way of, and if so this should be more or less a common problem.
Other that that, I've been very lucky it seems

Mine also has that, it happens only after watch some videos, after a few seconds, the over exposed white will go away.
I think it's normal.

Should I get a Leo?

With the HTC being the flagship phone for HTC, there seems to be many issues with this phone which seem very surprising for such an expensive phone.
HTC LEO or Nokia X5
Well, I haven't used an X5, but have had my Leo since thursday afternoon, been non stop using, installing new software / games on it, have not had 1 slow down, screen glitch, battery power has been exellent considering use of the phone I have done (WiFi always on, played games, watched movies music etc...)

Thank for your reply, very interesting I was reading that the phone is plagued with;
Extreme battery drain issues
Screen glitches
And SLOW performance and lag
ROM flash issues
SMS issues
Most of the problems have been niggles, though there have been a few major issues suffered by some people. It doesn't seem to follow any logical rules who gets one that has problems sending SMS messages, or maybe others that seem to dial by themselves.
All in all it is an excellent device- probably the best HTC have yet released.
Expensive? Not really in comparison to the cost of other SIM free phones when newly released. All the major flagship HTC releases have been in the £500-£600 in the 1st few months, but they do come down eventually.
More expensive means more features, more features means more bugs
But don't worry. HD2 is great phone. Best keyboardless Windows Mobile device. It still is Windows Mobile device, so be warned if you haven't had one.
But if you had WM device and you are looking for new one, and you don't need hardware keyboard, then HD2 is great.
Sure there is many complains here .. but that is what forums like this are for. It's not so bad.

Extreme battery drain? No- for a high powered device it lasts quite well. Cetainly better than my previous TG01
Screen Glitches: It is sensitive, but no 'glitches'
Slow performance/lag: Not at all
ROM Flash: Try and install something not designed for it and you may see issues. Stick to the official updates and no bother at all.
Finesse,
If you have seen and used the Nokia then I would go for it. As soon as you come to a device with the premise that it has a host of problems then your future good relationship with that device is lost before it starts!
Seen that so many times on this forum, hence my advice.
WB
I cant really speak for the Nokia x5 as I have never heard of it and dont know what operating system it uses but I have had my HD2 for over a month now with no problems at all. Everything runs smooth, screen looks amazing and games look fantastic.
If you have negative thought then steer clear as in my experience those people create their own problems to meet their own expectations but on the other hand if you are just curious because of other peoples negative comments then I would say dont pay any attention as overall its a fantastic phone and well worth getting. You wouldnt be disapointed and everyone else will drool when you get it out of your pocket. I dont know if you could say the same about a "nokia"

No, the only issue that really existed was the SMS issue but that's been solved with patches from HTC.
Screen issue can be solved simply by reducing sensitivity.
All the other issues do not exist. There is no extreme battery drain, no lag and no ROM flash issues.
I've had mine since Thursday afternoon as well and have been spending all day for the past few days playing with this phone, applying updates, and customizing it.
After the first couple days of getting used to it and getting everything set how I like it, I'm extremely satisfied.
This is clearly one of the best two phones in the world.
I would say it's tied with iPhone because iPhone has the best apps.
The HTC HD2 hardware wise is easily the best phone available right now.
I'm sure you meant nokia x6? If that's the case, the HD2 is a nice upgrade over that one...in every way imaginable.

Have you try taking picture of a white page ??? Do you notice a pinkish color in the center ?
Can you type 10 words with out faults ?
Has your phone Died? eg leaving it at night and next day he is just dead ?
Can you view an excel file in ful page, something that should be easy since both applications are MW yet Iphone does it why Leo cant ?
Are you sure there are no sms in your out box ? go in Traditional mode and check it out.
And sound while in a call is to loud, that ends up cronhing in your ears and can hear your own voice on ECHO.
Please take a look in XDA treads many people are talking about it since November

I've had my Leo for about a month now and I'm really enjoying it so far. No battery issues and the speed as well as the display is phenomenol. It looks great and my only complaint would be the sensitivity issue, I still have problems with the keyboard but other than that everything works great.

No- you are one of thousands of 'lucky' customers. This sort of forum by definition focusses on negatives, of which there have been some significant examples, but they are in the minority overall.
To the OP- no-one can tell you what to buy. I don't know anything about the Nokia X5 (X6?) but rest assured that it will also have its problems, and the Symbian forums will be full of people complaining about this and that failing.
Try and get hold of a sample of each in the flesh and see which one most closely fits your requirements.

Do you mean the X6? If so, I tend to think of the Nokia as a polished phone with extra features like video and movie player tacked on. The HD2 (and other WM devices) are pocket computers with a phone tacked on.
A Nokia will need no tinkering and won't let you alter too much for that matter. It runs Symbian S60 5th Edition. A Windows Mobile device on the other hand.... complete opposite.
Any problems on the HD2 will be ironed out, either by HTC or by the guys on this forum who should work for HTC!
The number of times I've gone to work and had someone say look at my new LG "This", Samsung "That" or Nokia N97 and I say "Nice phone" and carry on my business. Then they say "Yeah it is... look it can do this, this and that...". I let them show off the phone, then hit them with my souped up Diamond and they go "Ohhhh..... Ahhhhhh....Woooowww!!!!!"
Then they say "That's too much for me, I could never use it!" lol Good luck, and I hope you choose what's best for you.
EDIT - Just noticed your phone list... it's quite varied and am a little surprised you asked the question! HD2 it is then...

Well mine has a slight pink blur when I take a pic of a white wall, but I don't do that normally, so I can't see it when I take a normal pic.
I can type very efficiently on the onscreen keyboard and very rarely make mistakes (I probably make less mistakes that I do on a real keyboard).
My phone has never "died" overnight, or any other time.
I can't really answer the excel issue, as I never use it on my phone, but that's nothing to do with the HD2, and that's what this thread is about. Get on to Microsoft for issues with their software, not the phone manufacturers.
My SMS messages get sent 100% of the time, and since I know the SMS sending problem can be sporadic, I regularly check the outbox and sent box so that I'm sure it's not happening to me.
The sound quality whilst in a call is perfect on my phone. It's exactly the same type of quality I've had on every phone I've ever had, so there's really nothing to report there.
As far as reading other threads to see what problems there are, you really need to remember that people (for the most part) only start threads when they have issues, in the hope that someone will be able to resolve them. If it seems like the majority of posts are about faults, then it is because there's not many people creating threads to say "nothing wrong with my phone". That's just the nature of forums, especially ones with a support style user base, like this.
Please remember that the people who have no problems are actually the majority. If someone comes on here and says that they do not have problems with their phone, it doesn't mean that they're saying you don't.
If you're that displeased with it, you should return it as faulty. You just make it worse for yourself by keeping it when it obviously makes you unhappy.

[Q] POLL - Issues?

Vote for what issue do you have or dont...that we have all problems on one place and make a statistic:
(battery life is not an issue...its a fact xD )
perhaps it would make sense to add an "other issues" option, 'cause for me for example nothing of the above fits!
i've 2 dead red sub-pixels!
does'nt bother me much, but i'm still thinking about an exchange and it would be usefull info for me if other ppl have as well dead pixels (and if possible a comment in a posting how much of them)!
regards,
markus
I got a little piece of dust in my screen, but it's close to the borders, so I try to ignore it.
The rest of the device is amazing!

Sorry, but i think that I cant change the poll now :\
BUT...I had on my HD2 3 dead pixels (2 was white and 1 was grey), very tiny and very hard too see, and I think that I read in HTC manual that its all ok and normal to have up to (i think) 6 dead pixels...more than that is not normal and need to be sent to servis.
I have had the phone for 3 days now and really can't praise it enough. The sound quality through the earphones with Dolby on it awesome. Gonna buy some good earphones to improve slightly but not rushing.
The only thing I could complain about is the external speaking. It is a bit weak but when you get awesome sound through the earphones I don't think I am ever going to use the external speaker to listen to anything. Except alert sounds and the phone ringing of course.
Thread closed. Topics on poll are being discussed on other threads already.

Hardware display problem with I/O tablet

My Galaxy Limited Edition from I/O has developed a nasty display problem. I'm pretty sure this is a hardware defect and it needs to go to Samsung for support, but I thought I'd check here first to see if anybody else has run into this issue. For about 2 weeks now the display becomes for lack of a better term 'fuzzy'. The phenomenon gets worse from left to right. It's almost like the pixels are moving on the screen making everything fuzzy. Sometimes it gets so bad that any text can't be read anynore on the right side of the screen. I have attached some screen shots.
I have played with all the brightness controls etc, turned auto control on and of, rebooted a thousand times, let the battery run empty, used it on a full charge all make no difference whatsoever. The wierd thing is that this problem is intermittened. Some day I pick it up and the display will be fine for a few minutes then it's hosed again
Does anyone know what the process is to send these IO tablets to Samsung? Am I going to get the same one back or will they send me a refurb production unit? I'd like to keep mine since it has the cool back, but it's pretty useless in it's current condition. Is there a special contact for IO tablet support?
I should mention that the device is bone stock. No custom rom, not rooted etc. It is running 3.1, I haven't upgraded to the latest official 3.2 yet cause I actually like Pulse.
Thanks,
-Marc
Anybody? Am I the only one who's tablet has suffered this fate?
Definitely looks like hardware fault, graphics chipset, a loose cable, screen matrix, take your pick fact that it is intermittent and works after start then goes awry points to heating fault
Have two IO tabs myself since day one and know that during the initial rush of everybody playing, programming, wiping, semi-bricking etc the response of Samsung is that you must be in USA for guarantee cover to operate... however, that was before other service centres had any access to tab files and firmware.... best you can do is ring sammy and ask if they can repair and whether or not you can retain the le back panel... true it is cool and limited edition
What did you end up doing?
I have the excatct same problem.
I just returned my i/o cause the screen was lifting up. They actually said the back was faulty too and replaced it... With another io back. They were real willing to fix it for me and im sure thry will do the same for u. They do have a special number for these tabs vs tbe retail ones but if u call the normal number u will just get forwarded to the right people once u tell them which tab u have. I def got the same tab back they did not give me a refurb or a retail!

i also had the same problem . waiting for the solution yet.
1) Get rid of the Samsung apps like the AP widget, the photo widget, the AccuWeather widget
2) Set your task killer to kill those gd apps any time they start
3) Change your wall paper to something lower res.
Been working perfectly ever since.....

WTF? Have you read the other posts???
Had the very same problem OP had with their IO tablet as well. What I ended up doing was calling down to Samsung and talking to one of the reps there who was kind enough to warranty the tab.

Navigate the options and you'll end up talking to someone. I think the magic words to use are "Google IO" and "display problems".
I also started getting bleeding colors on my tab. I can't have the tablet repaired here so I had no choice but to see what I could do on my own. It turned out to be the flex cable between the lcd screen and the motherboard. The sad thing is that the cable is attached to the screen, so I need a new lcd screen for my tab.
Unfortunately it's just as difficult to obtain an lcd for our P7100, they either don't have it or it's out of stock.
If anyone has info on parts compatibility between 10.1" tablets or knows of some place that sells the lcd screen for our "v", please let me know.
In the meantime I got a P7500 from my operator on contract but I like P7100 more and would like to have it working again.

Buying Used Note. What to Watch Out For?

I'm set to meet with a craigslist seller tomorrow to buy his N7000.
I have another thread on here where I asked how to determine whether the phone was or was not genuine. Thanks to the generous response of posters here I'm satisfied that I now have enough information to make that determination.
Now I'd like to know what all of you think I should check for when buying a used Note above and beyond the question of whether it is a fake or not ....
Obviously I'm going to use my sim card and check for call quality, but other than that .... what tests do you think I should make? What should I look out for?
Any and all advice greatly appreciated as I'm somewhat nervous about this purchase (more money than I have yet spent on a phone!).

Thanks for the suggestion! Do you think I should use a program to look for dead pixels or just eyeball them?
There is a built in test set which covers an large number of things. Definitely do the touch test and leave the phone alone for a bit to see if there are ghost touches (you can see it happen here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1597981 ).
To start the test screen, go into the dialer and dial star-hash-zero-star-hash. It will help find dead pixels, test cameras and sensors, test the pen and touchscreen.

Check the internal memory, if its less than 11GB (on 16GB version) it could contain "bricked" sectors.
If its rooted, (the phone is) you could install emmc check and check the memory.
As per the thread, this should not be closed. It is very much valid, and could be a guidance to anyone who wants to buy a new GNOTE. The other thread is on authenticity, this one is on the potential issues with used genuine Notes.
Did you care to read what I typed? There are 2 threads of the same type opened by the exact same user. Hence, my question to close ONE of the two threads

Yes, assuming I have some questions related to rooting it, or about black crush, or some other issue related to actually owning the device. That is, unless, there is some sort of rule about how many unrelated threads I am allowed to start. If there is, by all means, let me know about it ...

They are two different threads. The first one was specifically about determining whether or not a Note is genuine. This thread is about other things to watch out for when buying a used Note--dead pixels, etc. Two different subjects. Again if there is some limitation on the number of unrelated threads I can start--please point me to that information.

Here I think you are actually in the right. Yes this thread probably could have gone in Q&A and I realized that only after the fact. However before I could actually delete my first post, I got two or three responses right off the bat, so I decided to just leave it as it was. If a mod wants to move it I won't complain.
i came across this matter 1 month ago. someone selling cheap note to my friend. sadly he bought it withot a doubt. when i check it. it was a fake. hardware is note but firmware is s3. the first thing i notice is the homescreen wallpaper. it was galaxy note 2 wallpaper. what i do then is i download android hardware info and check it there. instead of telling model name : GTn7000 it was something else. the cpu and ram is the same. then i go to setting and check for spen setting. there is none! i also restart the phone because if it is a galaxy note the first one to appear is a word : galaxy note gt-n7000. then i check the lockscreen wallpaper and it is different from stock lockscreen wallpaper. then i go checking the storage sadly it was 2g only.
1) Check the watermarks on the phone and battery. I'm not sure where these are located but I know phones always have one to identify water damage.
2) Check the screws to make sure there aren't any marks on them. Marks on them indicate that the owner has opened it before. If he has opened it before, the question becomes, why?
3) Make sure that the phone has 16 GB of internal memory, it should be about 12gb of user space. Run an emmc test on it. If you want, download the app, and put it on your own microSD card and bring it there. So you can sideload it and run the test yourself even if you have no WIFI.
4) Shake the phone to hear for any signs of rattling; an indicator that something could be broken inside.
5) Download the app phone tester to test all the sensors too. Make sure the accelerometer is working, proximity sensor, etc.
6) Play a song/video file to make sure the speakers are functional, and if they are functional, that they aren't busted (e.g., cracking when volume is too loud).
Can't think of anything else....but lastly, trust your gut. If the guy seems shady and something doesn't sit right with you, just leave the deal.
Check the USB charging port!!!!
Bring along a laptop and a USB cable that you know works. Make sure you can charge and that you get a data connection. Gently wiggle the end connected to the phone and make sure the connection doesn't drop.

+ 1. Very important.
I'm sitting here with my 6month old note and it isn't charging....it's stuck on 1% !
Have the seller open the back and check if the battery fits perfectly. A small step on the bottom end means the battery is bulged and very near the end of its life.
Great time to buy second hand Androids, since the release of the rediculously cheap yet hi spec nexus 4, I've noticed most people are basing there offers on this new low price level, not sure this is healthy for Android. The note 1 should be worth near to £300 as its the same or was price level as an iPhone 4s, yet most offers come in sub £200....unless you really need a stylus and a old spec rapidly forgotten phone I would wait till nexus 4 or add some cash to the falling in price note 2

If it's rooted run the Emma check. Good luck buds.

A few N7000's suffer from non working/very low volume bottom microphone.

monochrome display

Want a monochrome display on your phone? Think kindle paper back display, its kind of cool and saves some battery life, and here's how to do it.....
Step 1: go to "settings"
Step 2: go to "about phone"
Step 3: go to your "build number" and tap it about 7 time it will say "you are now a developer"
Step 4: go to "developer options"
Step 5: go to "simulate color space"
Step 6: select "monochromacy"
And bam you're done, your phone will now display in black and white only, to undo this just go back and follow step 4&5 and then select "disabled" have fun
Glad to see I'm not the only one who loves greyscale. It's odd in a lot of areas but fun none the less.
Yea I think its really cool, and a good thing to set it on while at work or out for the day and not really on the phone so much, but have a phone that gets poor battery life, it helps.
awesome! there are also other color modes
Yea there are 4 options for other color modes
I wonder how much battery it actually saves
Hmm interesting for reading books.
I would rather enjoy the full potential of this great phone. pedal to the metal and no slowing down is how I like it ?
is it possible to know the "simulate screen colour" antivity and make a shortcut on homescreen for easy on/off
i have been trying to know how to find current screen activity name for this monochrome feature, but in vain
can anybody help????

well i dont know if its possible but if you can combine it with buildin battery saver option via a tasker or iftt shortcut maybe you can simulate touhwiz battery saver feature, which mean if you have amoled display in your phone this could really help
i have been trying to do this.but i need to know how to get simulate screen colour>monochrome activity name and make a shortcut for it
does this make nexus 6 a little laggy for any one else? and i read somewhere that it stresses out cpu as it is doing extra work to simulate monochrome.
---------- Post added at 10:54 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:51 PM ----------
also can anyone confirm if it makes battery last longer. because when i last used it it was all laggy and i was getting battery drained faster than the usual 5-6 hours SOT i get without any issues.
why would monochrome save battery? all pixals are still being used, and differing shades of gray do nothing. sure, pure black helps, but grays do not(grays are most common in monochrome).
Next step - buy a Ferrari and drive it around in first gear only...

Go away troll!

Troll? Why do you say that? It's a perfectly reasonable comment in reply to someone who buys a very expensive device with a superlative display and then neuters it for the sake of a few minutes extra battery time, and even that proposition is questionable.
Try again. Why am I a troll?

First off, everybody already knows about this.
Second, hate to break it to you, but doing this will actually REDUCE your battery life.
Why? Well first off, there is processing overhead to convert the colors.
Second, WHITE is the color of maximum power consumption. It corresponds to ALL subpixels being turned ON.
Red+Blue+Green = WHITE. ALL subpixels are turned on and eating power.
NOred+NOBlue+NOGreen = BLACK.
Red + NOBLUE + NOGreen = RED. Only the RED subpixels are turned on, power consumption roughly 1/3 of white.
Understand?

Don't be so rude mate, not everyone has the same level of knowledge regarding Android, CM, Nexus 6 display panel ... you could have given the very same technical arguments but with no offense.
The spirit of the XDA community is hacking, trying new things, investigate in an open-minded way, explore our devices beyond OEM's trails... and newcomers don't always have the same technical background, so let's all chill out and remain open :good:

Being factual, accurate, and correct, is not rude.
If you disagree, then you obviously have some kind of problem where you need somebody to hold your hand and stroke your ego continuously to keep yourself out of the crazy corners of your own delusional mind, and if THAT is the case, then the only thing I can suggest to you, is that you stop being such a
There, see the difference? THAT was rude.
