[Q] Signal / attenuation issue on the M? - Droid RAZR M Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just wondering if anybody has had any of the issues mentioned in these threads:
https://forums.motorola.com/posts/5fb46833c0?page=1
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-razr-m/224018-razr-m-antennagate.html
Mine has been solid, and more solid than the S3 I tested. But it has had a few quirks as well, and I live in a strong 4G area. Makes me wonder if my area wasn't as strong if I would be seeing these issues as well.

Moved To Q&A
Its a question, so goes in Q&A.

Sorry, had a few XDA windows open and didn't realize I wasn't in Q&A!

I am also very interested in reports of radio/signal performance issues with this phone. I don't have mine yet, but I live and work in an area with extremely poor 3g only coverage and I will be very disappointed if the RF performance is not significantly improved from the first generation chip sets we have on current models.

Exactly - that was one of the big reasons I opted for this over something like the Maxx. Heck, wasn't that one of the perks, supposedly, of the S4 chipset? Better and more efficient handling of LTE/3G signals? Obviously that doesn't help with the actual strength/quality of the antenna, but still...

I would appreciate it if more people could weigh in on this. I'm still on the fence about moving to big red for this phone, and if it is confirmed to have signal issues that will make my decision easier. Would especially love to hear from people who already had Verizon : better or worse signal with the M than with your previous phone?

Who are you with currently?
And the fact that nobody is responding much in this thread (or the other linked threads) is probably because #1, not many people have the phone yet, or #2, it's an isolated issue.

Hoping for #2.
Currently with att. Been waiting forever for a high end phone that's got a small form factor, and I'm not confident we will see any others any time soon. So if this phone simply works as experience expected and isn't plagued with bugs, I will happily jump ship back to big red.

I used to carry an HTC Thunderbolt and this phone actually pulls better signal than it and the data is faster as well. Signal is no issue at all. Hope that helps

Yeah I guess the inherent problem with a thread like this is you won't hear the other side represented. For the most part my signal has been flawless, but I live in a very solid 4G area. I was talking with my wife this morning and the call was very "crackly" - but honestly, her iPhone 4S has been acting funny lately anyway (external speaker randomly not working), so who knows where the problem lied.... lay... whatever.

Haven't tried to compare that specifically to her iphone, and I don't have my previous phone to compare with. However, it might not be the most accurate test anyway, unless I carried her phone around with me all day, b/c we have a water tower about 100 yards from our house that looks like it has "antennas" for just about every carrier, so my signal strength at home is always top notch.

I'm in the NYC Metro area with strong 4G signal. My prior phone was the RAZR MAXX. I really don't pay much attention to the 3G/4G reading or even the signal bars. That said, I would say this phone spends more time on 3G than I noticed on my prior phone. The Maxx would get hot without use, just in my shirt pocket, as I'd be walking through Manhattan and the battery would show it. It seems that it was continuously searching for or trying to hold a weaker 4G signal - only my guess. I have yet to experience that problem with this phone.
I haven't had any problem making calls with the M, the sound is very loud and clear.

I can chime in with my findings a bit. I just picked up 3 of these phones for our business. Side by side with my Galaxy nexus, the razr m has a couple less bars. If I run a speed test the razr m always has less download speed, but it has a higher upload speed. The ping time is higher on the Razr also. I can't say about call quality till after today though. Now one thing to keep in mind, my gnex has a aosp version of JB and this razr m has the stock ICS. That could make a difference right now. I will try to chime in today on call quality and such later tonight.

From what I've read about the radios between the devices, the Gnex should have the ability to hit higher speeds than Moto's radios, but the stability/strength is another issue. Interesting that the Gnex is showing more bars, though!

bars don't mean anything. Samsung could set 80dBm to mean 5 bars while Motorola could choose 80dBm to mean 3 bars. Please go into settings and compare the actual signal dBm reading of the M and the gnex!

Yes, and I can tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt that the M is better. The Gnex greatly improved after 4.0.4, and then Jelly Bean - but the M is still much better. The Gnex would actually drop data often, the M's main problem (if you want to even call it a problem yet) is switching to 3G - not dropping data altogether.

Well the data drop issue was more of a software problem than a dbm issue, if I remember right. Obviously dbm's play a part in what the software is going to do, but still. Software tweaks clearly helped out the Gnex and Bionic in that regard.

I was limited on time. The razr m doesnt show signal strength in the phone status. I grabbed a app and the M is anywhere from -81 to -70 and the gnex is -86 to -84. I havent had any signal issues on this gnex.. I went through a couple of them though.

[Poll] Build quality survey, please participate ...

Hi,
If you own a Nexus S, please tell us about your phone.
How many times you have exchanged your phone until you got a perfect one?
If you exchanged it, tell us why? What kind of problem did you get?
If you were asked, "In terms of build quality, what is the worst part?"
With this poll, we could get a rough picture about how well the manufacture / production of Nexus S, Samsung QA, those kind of things.
Thanks.

Same here. The only "problem" with my NS is the home button backlight is not as bright as the others.
First Nexus S, no issues whatsoever. I was very surprised since I went through three G2s(okay hinge, worst hinge, meh hinge) and three MT4Gs(bad screen, no update/bad reception, bad screen) that I ultimately ended ditching for this phone.
If asked what's the worst part of the build quality, I'd say the lack of texture coating to help the phone from feeling so slick.

I too noticed that with my home button.
I've had the NS for 4 days and my battery life doesn't feel like its getting any better but I have used the phone constantly. I get about 5-7 hours usage before charge required again. That's around 15-30 percent.

Much improved over Vibrant. So that is gingerbread over TMo 2.1. Also better than my MT4G, it seems to find its ffc. But rooted/OCLF Vibrant blows over 2k on Quadrant and both HTC phones are up 6db on WiFi sensitivity from both Samsung phones. OTA on SNS seems very good though. Already got first OTA update on SNS!! No TMo klepto wear dragging me down. Wow, Skype, Fring Tango seem to work. Now need to root and get edge and a prepaid SIM card. Only Navigon won't load on SNS but does on all others Inc. SG Tab.

Second phone. Had to replace first one due to back button being unsensitive like other buttons. Also noticed gsensor is quite jumpy in readings. Trying to understand if this is also hardware error.

The cellular radio freezes when being under no signal condition (subway in underground) for more than about 10 minutes. That the phone is no longer to get signal even the train goes to surface or I get off the station.
I have to power cycle the phone in order to make cellular radio works again.
Wifi and BT aren't affected.

Wifi performance.

I used to own an Atrix and got rid of it because of the Wifi performance and a couple of other minor things. I'm wondering though, if I loaded a custom rom, could it literally improve the Wifi performance?
On my Inspire, the Wifi strength got better when I loaded cm7. Has anyone that's loaded cm7 on their Atrix noticed an improvement in Wifi performance?
I would literally have to hold the Atrix in landscape orientation to pick up signal at work where my iPhone 4 and Inspire can pick it up regularly.
Sent from my microwave
I'd have to say that your particular phone had a problem. Mine has awesome wifi strength. Way better than my Tilt2 or iPhone 3GS....and way faster since it's "n".
Maybe I should use the term range not performance.
I had 3 different Atrix's and they had the same range and were all dead in the same spots.
Sent from my microwave
Haven't noticed a difference in roms and wifi performance....
My 3gs hasvway better range then ny ATRIX ... so sad.
Still ... its not an issue since I have pretty good 3g coverage in my area.
Sent from my alien
Yes, unfortunately the atrix wifi range isn't that good. I have trouble picking up signal where others do so easily.
I wonder if the antenna is too small... would it be possible to "embed" a wire inside the back cover and connect it to the regular antenna to create a makeshift range extender?
Edit: iI think the phone's radio has influence over wifi reception, but it can only go so far. Might not be 'improveable' as much as we'd like to.

Very sad yes. I work in a lead lined building and have no service whatsoever, I completely rely on Wifi.
Sent from my microwave
That'd be your particular device's problem. Atrix got best wifi performance IMHO. Very fast and responsive. SpeedTest.net results shows that with the wifi at my home, my XT720 returns a speed of 7~8 Mbps where Atrix always returns 12~16 Mbps of speed.
I'd say the reduction in range is due to the improvement in speed.
My Atrix get's my wifi signal about 20m through 4-5 concrete walls, occasionally I've also noticed it get's it through 3 levels in my apartment building, though I don't have anything else to compare it too.

I doubt a ROM will significantly improve the wifi range on the Atrix, more of hardware thing IMO.
Same behavior for me at work too. My old BB 8900 can hold onto the weak wifi signal (around 80-90dbm) better than my Atrix. If I run too much data on wifi on the Atrix, the wifi will throw too many errors and disconnect. I ran logcat to see all of the fun stuff going on to figure this out.
Fortunately work is upgrading the wireless network soon .

The new radio helps the range a little vs the radio in 2.2.2 for me. The wifi disconnects less frequently, but it still disconnects from time to time. If you rely solely on wifi it's not worth it IMO.

RAZR HD's radio versus your previous phone...

I have a Rezound and it's radio held on to a LTE signal a lot better than my RAZR Maxx HD.. Could it be due to the way HTC implemented the Rezound's antenna in the battery cover, could be... Although when I have a strong signal with the RAZR HD, the through-put speeds are greater on speed tests. More side-by-side testing before I make my decision on whether I keep this new toy....
Sent from my DROID RAZR MAXX HD!...
Which antenna? 1x/3G or 4G? I was testing Razr M and it lost 10dbm in 4G just from getting picked up. 3G was hardly affected and voice was rock solid. Looking at the two side by side in the store, the Maxx HD didn't have that issue.
The Razr HD would drop 4G LTE and fall back to 3G in building and driving down on the highway. Same exact places with the Rezound 4G LTE never drops. Side by side on 4G, there is a 10-15 dBm difference..

Out of all of Verizon's 4G phones I've used/reviewed (which is all of them) the HTC Rezound still has the best 4G reception in my opinion.
Inside my house, most phones will cycle between 4G & 3G depending on what room you are in, and others (like the HTC Thunderbolt and Samsung Galaxy Nexus) won't get 4G at all. But the HTC Rezound stays on 4G. From what I heard a while back, HTC didn't want a repeat of the Thunderbolt with 4G issues, so they redesigned the antenna and increase the power to it.
With the RAZR HD and Galaxy S III here, both of those do have the 4G/3G cycling in my house, but the RAZR HD is still pulling a better signal around -112dBm with the GS3 at -116dBm.

When looking at the dBm numbers, 4G at the 700MHz spectrum will be about 22dBm less than 1X or 3G 800/1900MHz. This was discussed in another tread, where the guy went into great detail about how the signal is measured by phones.
So for example, if your connected to the same Verizon tower with voice, 3G, and 4G, you might show -90dBm for 1X voice or 3G data, but -112dBm for 4G.
Just did another test via "Phone info" app
Rezound = -76 dBm / 8 ASU
RAZR Max HD = -98 dBm / 43 ASU

Same thing here when comparing my Maxx HD to the Rezound. I notice a 15 to 20 dbm difference side by side with the Rez holding a 4g signal indoors while the Maxx drops to 3g. Glad I am not the only one who noticed this as I was ready to return the Maxx as defective. Anyone else with weaker than expected signals? Otherwise love love love this phone. Even an iPhone 4 user commented how nice this is.

..... the jury is still out, should I keep my New Moto?!
Sent from my iPhone 5
At least from my perspective, I can tell you that the radio in this phone is better than the one in my Thunderbolt...Everything is better than my Thunderbolt...:good:
I'm really enjoying the Motorola Razr HD Maxx, It's a really great phone. As far as the radio, the only other Verizon LTE phones I used have been this one, the s iii, gnex, and the iPhone 5. In terms of radio, I think the Razr has the best the signal of the 4 I used with the the iPhone coming in a close second. The gnex signal for me was not that great compared to the other phones. But I'm really thinking long and hard whether or not to keep the device or not. Moto tracked record for not updating devices is well known. I know they said the phone will get a jelly bean update, but remember how long the original droid Razr take to get ICS? I mean they were advertising ICS upgradable when the phone came out. My second concern is the hardware the phone was released with, I originally got this phone for the all day battery life and so far it's been serving that purpose. Btw I love the new moto skin, feel real close to stock and the tweaks they made complement the phone well. But releasing the phone with a single gb of ram and dual core s4 to me leaving a lot to be desired, had the phone came the summer that just passed, I wouldn't think twice of not recommending this phone to someone over a s iii or hox. I think this phone could been moto chance to shine ahead of the other oems had they put 2gb ram,s4 pro and keeping that huge battery. I know the hardware specs dont matter that much untill there software thats optmized well enough to run smooth on.That would off been a phone to definitely hold me over a 2 year contract agreement and rival the competition for a awhile. But fortunate for me, I don't really lock myself into contracts, I mostly just buy outright . I have untill the 1st of November to decide whether or not to keep the phone or not. Been considering the note ii, If The Verizon model comes out before November 1, I'll definitely switch.
I came from the galaxy nexus and i'm much happier with the razr hd maxx. the MUCH improved battery life alone gives me an e-boner and moto's skin atop of ICS isn't too bad. the radio is also much better than the g'nexus and the build quality is awesome!

Hi,
Same reception as my Galaxy S3 little better,
Razr HD GSM version on 2G and 3G networks
Rezound and Incredible 4G hold a usable 4G connection better than any device I've had (and I've had almost all of them). However, the Maxx HD (and original Maxx for that matter) are second in my experience.

Same here. Still flashing ROMs on the GNex for grins, but loving my rooted MAXX HD. Battery and build are amazing.
So I got a replacement last night due to the the previous phone kept cycling from 4G to 3G and then loosing signal all together. The replacement is doing the same (So the previous phone was not defective, second phone confirms it for now). So I decided to force set the phone to LTE only and man this radio is a champ! I got LTE coverage on a rural two lane highway in Colorado (Highway 83, 20+ mile stretch, Castlewood State Park to Black Forest @ 60mph) where I normally couldn't with my Rezound... LTE only dropped twice, but reestablished connection promptly.. Download speeds ranged from 6mb - 50mb, upload speeds 256kb - 25mb.. This phone is a keeper!

[Q] Anyone one else think the radio on the Nexus 4 is sub par?

I've definitely noticed a decrease in service compared to my previous phones, especially the T-Mobile Galaxy SIII. I'm not sure if its poor Radio firmware, or the materials, but it's a noticeable drop. Using a signal booster in my house, I used to get full bars in my bathroom just two rooms away on the GSIII. The Nexus 4 barely gets 1.
Anyone else having issues, and does anyone know if newer radio firmware will be released soon?
feels the same for me, if not better than my galaxy nexus.
Yeah, my connection cuts out quite frequently. It's pretty annoying

I can't really compare how my reception is with my nexus since I am on a new provider, but I did notice something odd with how many bars I have. I assume there is some kind of battery saving function because when I am not really using data I will see 3G, as soon as I use data though it will switch to H. But what I noticed is when I am on 3G I will have like 2 bars service, but when the phone switches over to H I have full or close to it..
Maybe thats normal just thought it was odd?

Normal. Saves data. That's how T-mobile does it. Not sure about the bar part, unless it's switching towers for some reason? Ha.
Ordered my Nexus 4 on the 13th. Still waiting.
Yes it's noticeably worse than any other smartphone I've owned.

In my case, it's the opposite. It's the best smartphone in terms of service quality. maybe because I'm in Belgium !

Weren't you the one that dropped yours in the toilet? If so I don't think you qualify anymore for bug reports

I seem to be having the same reception problem the iPhone 4 had, namely that when I hold the phone, I lose reception.
Flat on desk: -82dBm
Fingers on either side of phone, still flat on desk: -99dBm.
Is anyone else getting the same phenomenon or is it just me? I wanna do a replacement if it's just me, but if it's something that everyone is experiencing, then I'll live with it.
I notice 2 things, 1) in general the reception is lower (4bars with my sensation/hd2 = 3bars on my n4) but I haven't done any real testing so it could be the bars are incorrect 2) big death grip problem, as soon as I grab the phone the reception drops and can cause a call to drop
For the most part I get good reception but yeah in certain parts of the house the phone is unusable.
I wonder if a simple bumper fix will do

Same, going from -77 to -85dBm

Keep in mind that bars mean nothing. Check the dBm / asu, the lower the better. Over ~110 things get dicey/unusable.
When I had my N4 on AT&T, it got better reception than my Capitvate and Atrix 2. I'm on T-Mobile now, and I'm still experimenting.

I have a tpu case on mine and it hasn't made a difference, actually the thing that works for me is switching to 2G + wifi when I'm home and of course 3G when out and about, I just wish nfc task launcher or tasker could access that "toggle" on the stock rom.
Hi
Different phone different reception patterns. No two phones will be exactly the same in terms of their signal strength, you might find an improvement compared to a previous phone, you might find it is worse, most will see no difference and it's very dependant on environment. I've seen no difference personally. Given some time and feedback from various carriers can improve things with radio updates, such as the phone being more or less aggressive in switching between cells, or protocol fixes that help prevent drop outs during higher error rates when the signal is lower and cleaner/quicker hand-off to adjacent cells.
It should be noted the main antenna is at the bottom of the phone like most mobiles these days, so holding it at the bottom cupped in the palm of your hand will see the signal reduce and battery consumption increase as it tries to transmit through flesh. There are diversity antennas towards the top of the phone, but these are for reception only and do not transmit.
A bumper is unlikely to help unless it was extremely large to make the distance between a hand and the antenna several inches! The iPhone was a different issue, it was because the antennas were not insulated and were being de-tuned and shorted by being touched when the phone was held.

Verizon G2 signal

I've had my Verizon LG G2 for four days. It seems that the phone data signal mostly stays at 1-2 bars. It's mainly on 4G, but there are times that it drops to 3G, even 1X. I have run side by side tests with an S4 where its signal icon is at least a bar higher and is always on 4G.
Does the G2 have a weaker antenna than the S4? Or could I have a faulty phone?
Here's another thing, MMS messages seems to take between 30-45 seconds to send. I am a new Verizon subscriber, but when I was on Sprint my phones rarely took this long to send an MMS. Is the length of time my phone takes to send an MMS normal for Verizon?
Lastly, my phone heats up to the point of getting hot whenever I'm on a call for more than 5 minutes or whenever I send multiple MMS messages. If I took the phone back to the Verizon corp store where it was purchases, would it qualify for a new replacement?
Thanks in advance.
I don't see any of that on mine and the signal is much better than my old GNEX.

My G2 gets 2-3 bars indoors where I work, where my GNex would struggle just to keep one bar. If I go outside, it gets a full 4-5 bars and good speed too (I hit 43.8 mbps just this afternoon on Speed Test). Granted, the GNex's radio hardware sucked, but I don't find the G2's to be a disappointment at all.
For a better comparison than number of bars, you can go to Settings -> About Phone -> Network -> Network Type and Strength. It breaks it down by 4G (data) and 1X (voice) signals. Numbers closer to zero are better, so for instance -50 dBm is a much better signal than -100 dBm. Not sure where this is on the S4, but it should be in a similar place.
Well I got mine on Wednesday, came from the RAZR maxx HD. I an day mine is much better than the maxx hg. The interior of my building at work I couldn't get a signal with my HD, it would drop to 1x and sometimes no signal. This phone keeps 4g in the same spot. My office with the HD was OK, slow internet but kept 4g. This phone works perfect there too.
I think you have a faulty one.
Be careful comparing different UI's. When I was swapping back and forth between sense and aosp sense showed 5 bars and aosp showed 2 >_>. Artificial Inflation!!!
I actually haven't even made a call or sent an MMS on my G2, so I can't comment on those
Verizon signal on mine seems better than my gs4. I've dropped to 3g only once in the weeks I've had this and that's because there was a huge verizon outage in NJ

Ya where I work I would get 3g in the middle of the building on the s4 but now on the g2 it is always 4g

Gnex has 2 bars of 4g, G2 has 3 bars of 3g. Sitting next to each other.
Only bad thing for me.

same network?
also the artificial inflation above. If the 5 bars were more accurate then the 2 bars were off. And thats not just ui, its modem ,rom, phone, tied into circumstances and networks lol. On previous phones I noticed that itsnot as straight forward.
For me reception/in call quality/network speeds on g2 has gotten better then on all previous phones.
On Verizon curently have razr hd and note2. Thinking of G2. So you guys that have had them for awhile how is data reception? My Razr is top notch there but a little slow on everything else. My note2 is fast as lightining but lacks a bit compared to Razr in data reception. Im in a poor coverage area for about 7 months out of the year and need good 3G 4G reception. So how about it how good is the G2? Thanks

Just came from a razr, the difference is night and day. In addition, the razr doesn't give accurate measurements of signal. The G2 has been more accurate, has a better signal, and is faster.

That's really good to here my HD is really good for signal its just hasn't got the power or I should say processor to do the job. I'm unlocked rooted and over clocked to 1890. It works but its really struggling. If the G2 will give me good signal strength its twice the phone my HD is out the box. Thanks.

I thought the signal on my razr was good also, until I got the G2. I have been going to a doctor's office for the last 4 months. My razr would always have 1 bar of 4G, but the speeds were more like evdo. I would always have to jump on the free wifi. My G2 on the other hand has 4G when it says 4G. I don't use the wifi anymore because it's actually slower than 4G.
As for the power, it has easily run everything I've thrown at it. Even programs that slowed my razr almost to a stop. Night and day.
My only real problem with the G2 was the phone call quality. I think it is something that is really skimmed over in most reviews, when it should be a priority. I mean, after all, it is a phone. On the razr, phone calls were clean and clear like I was in the same room or at worst, 1 over. On the G2, calls are more bassy and it sounds like there is some distance between me and the caller, if that makes any sense. I actually feel like I'm on a phone. I do have to ask people to repeat themselves more often, but not so much that it's a hassle. Most of the time call quality is actually pretty good, but after using Motorolas since the OG droid, it just doesn't feel right at times. One good thing, is I occasionally hold the phone between my head and shoulder with very little problems. On the razr, I just couldn't do that comfortably because the callers on the other side wouldn't be able to hear me. Hasn't happened yet with the G2.

Your really selling me but that's what I like to here not how many KB download I got but where I get 4G now that I didn't get before. That is more of a test of how the phone is working than what it says on a gauge. Going to start getting one tomorrow I don't have an upgrade coming up and it wouldn't matter because I'm on u.limited and font want to loose it so it's full price or probably find a new in box on eBay and save the tx and a bit more. Should be able to pick one up for about $475. Thanks Again.

My wife has the razr maxx, I'm coming from the maxx hd. On fringe areas, it's almost the same. This last week, where I was, I could kinda make phone calls, texts are in and out with the G2. I was in the same place a few weeks ago with the maxx hd and it was the exact same. About 2 weeks ago I was in the same place as my wife and hers kept the signal a little longer on the maxx than my G2. And the dbs were a little lower on hers, maybe 5db, indicating a little better service. The G2 does a little better than the maxx hd inside a building tho, it keeps 4g where my maxx didn't at one place at work.
Overall I would say it's a wash I'm my experience. But I use a Bluetooth and the Bluetooth connection is a little better.

I was in the same boat. I got mine on ebay for $508 with the quick window case and screen protectors. Mine was listed as used, but it was better condition than a lot of the so called new ones. Less than an hour of use, compared to new auctions with less than a week of use.

I have had the same issue as you all did. I have an old sims card that was in my old droid 4 phone. My coverage kept losing 4g and no matter what I did no 4g in sight. I have a sims card that came with the lg g2 and after a long time of suffering with this problem I called tech support. He tracked down the problem to the sims card I had in the phone. Long story short the problem lies in the old sims card. The old card was primary a 3g card so the device would try to go to 4g and it did on a temp basis but after a 2 to 3 minute period it would never go back to 4g without the reboot. I had tech support check it out and after we activated the proper sims card...poof... all better! The problem lies in the sims card. Call tech support and it will fix your problem. Hope this helps everyone by offering a solution and exposing the problem so everyone understands the issue..
