[Q] Can't decide Razr M or SG III - Droid RAZR M Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys,
Before I saw Razr M, I was set on SG III. Best Android out there. But Razr M come along and it's hits my sweet spot in terms of size. I am not that big a fan of big phones, but SG III was thin and was okay.
Tried M in the store and this thing is nice!! Fits in the hand well, looks very well build(like my T420s ) . Unlike SG III, didn't have to hyperextend my thumb to reach the diagonal end of the screen.
Though, a few places SG III does seem to have the better spec - better screen, removable battery, more internal memory, supports 64GB card, already has better android dev support(not sure if Razr M will get dev support).
But man, its just fits like a hand to a glove -- unlike O.J Simpson's glove Can't make up my mind.
Experts, what would you recommend... Anybody who's made the switch yet?

For 100 bucks, it can't be beat. They also did a good job of not raping the ICS experience. I'm very pleased with this phone. The non-removable battery bugs me, too. But, for $100, I don't think it's a bad risk. Just charge it correctly and the phone should last a good two yrs on it. Oh, and the battery life is very nice. I had an 1800 mAh in my X and this is smoking that battery. Definitely a nice little upgrade from the bolt lol. And, color led's....Moto hardware.

I've been using the M since the launch, replacing a RAZR MAXX. I don't like Samsung Android phones for a number of reasons; I don't have a recent one so I can't compare. My last four phones have been Motorola android. I do look around and almost bought the iphone4S in the spring but decided on the RAZR MAXX. I don't consider myself a fanboy but I have been sticking to Motorola.
The build quality of the phone is excellent. No problem holding a signal. The phone is very loud and sound is clear, both phone and speaker; important to me as I use mine on noisy streets. I like the size better than the MAXX, as you said, easier to move your thumb from one side to the other. The size is closer to a 4" screen because you have the bottom row of buttons using screen space unlike prior dedicated buttons. I'd rather have a removable battery too but Motorola seems to be moving away from these. The battery seems to charge faster than my other phones. I don't use my phone for videos or games so the screen is fine for my needs although it isn't as readable outdoors as my D3 (both on auto brightness). Phone supports 64gB cards according to this thread:
https://forums.motorola.com/posts/e25e57fac0
Since a developer's edition is available on Verizon I would think you'll see more support for these three Motorola phones from the developer community than any other on Verizon. Full disclosure, I did get mine free at the launch event but I really like this phone with the battery being the biggest negative as I'm not near a charger all day when I'm out of the office. I don't come close to the "20 hours of mixed usage" in the device specifications.

If big screen is not your choice, you can happily buy it, I am also very much impressed with RAZR M's almost frame-less display.. I am waiting for Intel version, coming this 18th....

i just did, also a t420s user (and prior t410s). im loving it so far. i was stuck between the two and wanted to smaller form factor.
need to find a battery charger, used to external charger and spare batts to carry round for a long weeked of travel.

I'd get the RAZR M, hands down. The oversized SIII does not appeal to me at all. I don't need to win any arguments against the nerds, so the slight sacrifice in specs doesn't matter to me. It uses the same processor, anyway, so the only thing you're missing is the RAM and the storage. Plus, I'm really not a fan of the cheap plastic that Samsung uses, and Samsung in general just has been pissing me off as of late.

I've been comparing both the last couple of days (Verizon) and will try and comment more later tonight, but I've decided on the M. A lot more to say, but signal strength was noticeably better on the M (wifi and cell - thank you Moto), build quality feels more solid, and battery life seems marginally better (I'm sure because of the signal strength difference and screen difference). Not that there weren't things I liked better on the S3, but in my case the M made the most sense. Will try and elaborate more later.

Thanks guys. This is a very good(and encouraging) discussion.
jntdroid - Waiting to read what you have to say after your analysis.
Str0ntium - I am no techie expert by any stretch, so what steps do I have to take to extend the battery life. My current(2yr old) is just sputtering and just drains battery quickly. Have to charge it at least twice a day with minimal use. I probably did not take the correct steps to extend it's life.

I sold my GS3 for the Razr M. The GS3 is a great device, but I've just never caught on with the looks and the size does make it unwieldy at times for one handed use. Motorola devices tend to have the strongest signal, and the M having the same Snapdragon S4 and being smaller just makes it a home run for me. Would be cool to have the 720p LCD, but I'm not bothered by it.

No regrets so far? Is the M's signal noticeably better than the s3's?

Not at all. The Snapdragon S4 paired with a qHD screen makes the device brutally fast. Don't get me wrong, the SGS3 is fast out of the box, but with less pixel, it's a missile in the Razr M. Other than getting Nova launcher to replace the BLUR launcher, I have nothing to complain about.
In terms of signal strength, that is always a YMMV discussion, but I am definitely getting better data connectivity. I had a hard time streaming Youtube music video at my work desk, but no problems with the Motorola. I seem to be getting an extra bar or about -10 db in terms of signal strength over the SGS3.

The big differences in the S3 over the Razr M is the size diffrence.
Other than that the Razr M does not support HDMI out. Even through MHL. Inside the Razr M also only has 8gb of memory but unless you really need 64gb's of memory I think you'll be fine. The screen looks good even though it's not 720p.
I do really like the circle widget though it's pretty slick.
I would have to guess that the S3 will have end up being more developer friendly if you are into modding. The Samsung also has some decent packaged in apps but that's not really a huge selling point.

Better Looks (They say, but this is subjective even in this picture above the GS3 looks much better personally)
More at GSM Arena
EDIT: Made some changes and corrections
I expected as much.
I believe that the key point here is that all of those differences you've listed are marginal in most areas, but having a high quality feeling and good looking phone is very important to me.
Unless those differences were huge (let's face it, they aren't), I'm struggling to look past the One X for myself.
The amount of times I'll pick up my phone and enjoy the feel of it absolutely blow away the zero times I'll care about the camera being 1% better or the phone loading a web page 000.1 second quicker.
Why can't Samsung use some intelligent designers? They really are clueless at this stuff. They've managed to make TouchWiz look even worse as well, despite adding some nice features.
+
Better Storage
Removable Battery
Just read it
SGS3 is amazing
It's way way better than the HOX
haters gonna hate, where are everyone now?
GS III is purely awesome
The battery life test here is what is the most interesting. AMOLED screens use up more power than LCDs at bright colours, so it's expectable to see the S3 have only a slight margin over the HOX. The video test is the most interesting one; that's just pure obliteration beyond the 300mAh advantage. Expect the device to have on average a much better screen-on time than even that that if you optimize for the AMOLED screen, Samsung's default skin isn't quite nice in that regard. So much for Nvidia's +1 core.
This thing is proven again and again this year's best goes for samsung !! No more pointless discussion on which is the best.
GS3
So the GS3 won in Performance, Display, Battery Life, Sound Quality, Camera, Memory and most other things, in other words it mopped the floor with the One X, HTC fans are not going to like this,
Something else im impressed by is the Galaxy S2's performance in the benchmarks and Camera, absolutely incredible for a device released over a year ago, Samsung built an absolute masterpiece there.

Well colour me impressed Samsung, gonna be hard deciding between the two... still don't like Touchwiz though (tried it on an ICS S2) let's see if the newer version is good enough.
Always loved touchwiz, even tho i have an P990, im sure any software issue can be fixed eventually, im more concerned about the physical issues that it may bring.

To me the home screen flinging didn't really respond to my touch, as in no matter how fast my finger moves, once I lift it it glides at its own pace. It's not very satisfying. Or maybe it was just my friend's phone that's like that...
About the defects (if that's what you mean) all phones will have some when they launch. I wait a couple months for them to iron things out.
It is extreme subjective. I have hold my buying decision when One X launched and waited for the announcement of SGS3. I still prefer SGS3 to HOX for switchable battery and microsd. They are with the same surface material. Sense UI may be better and I get used to it for years. Just wait for the arrival in my place to buy SGS3.
This is obviously a hot topic in the One X forum also. Here's what I posted there. Keep in mind I'm deciding between the two after a week or so with the SGS3. I also came from a i9100 and have a 3G UK G-Tab 10.1 so I'm no one's fanboi.

Hmm, not really. The closing of the article summed it up best...
"Anyway, back to where we started. Two superphones, one Android crown. The HTC One X managed to come to the market first, while the Galaxy S III is a little late, but has plenty to show for it. We're tempted to play it safe and split it equal. The HTC One X: this is what a droid flagship should look like. The Samsung Galaxy S III: that's what a droid flagship should perform like. But that won't be fair to either of them. They didn't get where they are by playing it safe.
It seems obvious that the Samsung Galaxy S III wouldn't have raised as the new standard-setter without a powerful challenger like the One X. There's no consolation prize here, no second-best. A fair fight and a win-win for Android."
Some other things that struck me as relevant...
"The HTC One X is encased in a polycarbonate unibody (Gray or Black), which is matte in appearance and pleasant to the touch. The Samsung Galaxy S III is covered in glossy plastic (with Blue brushed metal look or pure white), which is durable, but not quite as nice to hold. We're not impressed by its looks either.
"On the other hand, Samsung's design allows you to change the battery allowig you to use a spare one to extend battery life or replace an old burnt-out battery with a fresh new one. Oh, and there's a microSD card slot too. Not that HTC couldn't have put a card slot into the One X, they just decided that 32GB should be enough for everyone (and it probably is)."
"Of course, not all of them are deciders. The S-Voice is a direct take on Siri, but it really fails to live up to expectations, while the NFC-based media sharing over S Beam has limited application for now. Pop-up play will rarely be used while Buddy photo share borders on useless."
So what does it come down to? Personal preference.
1) Is a removable battery and SD card slot important? Buy the SGS3.
2) Is design, construction, and feel in the hand important? Buy the One X.
3) Is low light picture and video important? Buy the One X.
4) Are more detailed pictures in bright light important? Buy the SGS3.
5) Do you like the vivid (I'm being kind) colors of AMOLED? Buy the SGS3.
6) Do you like a brighter, non-PenTile display, with more accurate color and better detailing? Buy the One X.
7) Want a better browsing experience and more audio and video codec support? Buy the SGS3.
8) Are you an avid gamer that'll be pushing the CPU and GPU regularly? Buy the SGS3.
9) Do you like TouchWiz? Buy the SGS3.
10) Do you like Sense? Buy the One X.
11) Do you listen to lossless audio over $300+ headphones or a home system that cost several thousand dollars? Pick the SGS3.
There's other differences that may matter to people but those are the main ones. I knew the SGS3 would benchmark better than the One X when I bought it. The reality is, as it stands today, the power of Teg3, S4, and Exynos-Quad are wasted because the OS and apps aren't able to tap their power. Other than bragging rights you'd be hard pressed to tell them apart performance wise; they'll "feel" the same.
My views on the main features...
1) I like the LCD2 display on the One X. After using AMOLED for a year the realistic colors, the lighter look because black backgrounds aren't used to save battery, and increased display brightness are all nice for a change.
2) The One X camera h/w is better than the SGS3's. It shows in low light settings. I'm hoping s/w tuning in future updates makes it a better all-around performer. I wouldn't ditch the One X over the camera as they don't strike me as that dramatically different from each other.
3) Audiophiles probably never considered the One X once it was announced that the SGS3 has a Wolfson DAC. An audiophile would cut off their arm before listening to compressed formats like MP3's or on anything less than high grade equipment. That makes 95% of us “non-audiophiles.” And a real audiophile would question the use of something like a smartphone as an audio output device anyway.
4) Did anyone who bought the One X not know in advance it had fixed storage and a non-replaceable battery? I'd like those features; I think anyone would. But I really like the design of the One X and if it had to look like the SGS3 in order to have them I'd pass.
5) Other than the graphics issues which are big, the One X's launch has been pretty typical from a QC perspective. I'll bet anyone here the SGS3 launch looks the same (sans graphics issues) and that display consistency will be one of the biggest *****es on their forum. The SGS2 and GN launches were far from great.
So, the short answer to OP's question, nothing in that review has changed my opinion of the One X. Look at it this way, the SGS2 crushed the Sensation. In less than a year HTC launched a phone that made GSMArena consider splitting the win. That alone is pretty impressive. Of course, YMMV and I clearly don’t expect everyone to agree with some of my comments.

Im not going there to start a new thread or whatever and never have. Now that the dust has settled, lets be the bigger man.
In my own opinion these guys don't realize just how many of us have mp3 collections we want to pack on our phones. Not having the ability to get my mp3s on board makes the htc piece a non starter all by itself unless it can offset this by having an apk that makes naked supermodels spill out its guts on command.

differences were not huge you say?
have you seen the video comparisons?htc's looked pale as compared to sgs3's.
and the most important thing that everyone waited and wanted to know was the battery life.
"here's a curious little detail about what people are saying that amoleds use more power when displaying whites compared to other screen displays.
"The two flagships were less convincing in the browser endurance test. The HTC One X shut down just 4 hours and 18 minutes into the test and the Galaxy S III went on for 5 hours and 17 minutes. We were actually rather surprised that the S III came out on top here, knowing how badly the predominantly white web pages treat AMOLEDs.""
"Audio quality
The Samsung I9300 Galaxy s III turned out to be one of the most talented musicians around and managed to edge out the One X in the audio output quality test."
not huge difference my ...
This seems to be nearly flawless victory or smackdown (for the SIII, except screen and body imo), the photo sensor even trump the iPhone 4S. Glad to see the the audio quality is decent, that is a big factor for me.
I still don't understand Samsung decision to not use 5x5 icon rows in the home screen.

HTC One X is better than SGS3 say HTC

The full details are here but I've provided a handy cut out and keep version for you all here:
Countering Objections
GS3 is slimmer. Only 0.3mm difference! Because the HTC One X is made by HTC we feel that it feels slimmer even though it isn't.
GS3 has removable battery. We counteract this by recommending you drag a second battery around to charge your first battery with as well as your charger to charge either one of those with and this is better because you just have to charge up a spare battery anyway. You can always run fewer apps! Did you know this makes our phone water resistant for all those underwater phone calls you like to make? Using this device under water will invalidate your warranty.
GS3 has SD card slot. HTC One X has 32GB of internal storage plus you can use 25GB of dropbox! We know you can get the GS3 with 32GB of internal storage, put an additional 32GB of sdcard storage in there and it comes with 48GB of dropbox space but hey did we mention UNIBODY UNIBODY UNIBODY!
GS3 has a bigger display. Er yeah but pentile guys it's totally pentile you'd never find us using pentile *hides the One S* so yeah pentile.
HTC One X vs GS3
Better Speed/Faster. One X is 1.5GHz and the GS3 is 1.4GHz so we're like 0.1 faster guys. Using this same reasoning all our workstations in the office still have 3.8GHz Pentium 4s in them because who wants a crappy 2.67GHz i7? This is how we manage to come up with such efficient design decisions!
Better Camera. Like 70% better! What do you mean, quantify? Ours also starts 0.29s faster so imagine if you used the camera once a day for a YEAR we'd save you almost TWO MINUTES!
Better Sound. Beats Audio guys, it's SO the best sound ever. Do you think Dr Dre would use a GS3? Pfff. Does the GS3 have BEATS AUDIO? No way, they have something called Wolfson and we all know that just sucks.
Better Durability. One X is POLYCARBONATE whereas the GS3 is just some kind of PLASTIC. Polycarbonate plastic. So there!
Better Design. World acclaimed design and we were disappointed in the SGS3 being better so we claim it's disappointing.
Also if you view your phone through a macroscope when you're using it you'll so appreciate the pixel layout on the One X far better than on the GS3!

Funny how this was also posted on the hox forum but the thread got locked. HTC can't even find support from their own users
Not surprising really. It really is quite an embarrassingly desperate attempt to trick the layman punters. I feel sorry for ppl who get suckered into buying one and have to face overheating, poor battery and build quality problems. My friend at work has had 5 hox replacements and he's really regretting not waiting for the gs3. His hox keeps reaching over 55 celcius and shuts down in his pocket! O2 said they'll give him a refurbished gs3 for £100 but he has to wait till one shows up.
But gotta say that the s4 version of the hox is brilliant as long as its multitasking issues can be fixed.

2 things I love in life - getting screwed over at work by idiot bosses and slow ass user interfaces!
Deebo took your bike too?!
GS3 VS HTC One X: Compared. And the winner is:
1. Better Speed: Winner: GS3. The manufacturing of the GS3 is a newer process, runs cooler, and overall is faster than the One X. If you look in the One X forums you will find people are having problems with One X using one core at times and is causing problems. Some are oveclocking or underclocking just to avoid glitches. This is the One X out of the box that is having issues with the Tegra 3 architecture.
2. Better Camera: Winner: GS3. If you check out the reviews you'll find overall that the One X has an inferior camera. Not to mention I've heard word that it only does 25fps in video compared to the GS3 that does 30fps. All the reviewers mostly say the same thing that GS3 camera is better. The only thing everybody agrees is that the One X burst mode is better. Big deal.
3. Better Sound: Winner: HTC One X. The beats software that HTC One X has is nothing but a software hack and is not done through hardware. So, the improvements that come from Beats, the GS3 is capable of these benefits through software. One area that I would say that the One X may have the GS3 beat is in sound performance out the speaker. I saw a comparison. The One X audio had a fuller sound out of the speaker that the GS3. Although, I think they might have said that the GS3 had a little bit louder volume.
4. Better Durability: The One X is made of Polycarbonate, which sounds like a good thing. Right? No. Because the quality control is so bad at the factories, HTC fans are having to buy theirs locally. They're having to pick through boxes to find a good one . What they are finding is creaks in the plastic, loose builds, and malformed polycarbonate mold. How bad? Well, bad enough that on they're forums pole 30% had miscellaneous problems. Not to mention complaints about screens that had dusts specks underneath, glue underneath the screen, "screen ripple", and screen cracks. Am I making this up, no. Read the One X forums. Not to mention, that the curvature of the glass on the HTC One X increases the chances of screen breakage. The lightweight plastic on Galaxy devices (while not having the most expensive feel) through the years has been good when it comes to dropping, as the plastic is very bendable and flexible.
5. Better Design: Winner: Tie. The One X has a more "razor" phone type design which looks very nice. Although, the GS3 is thinner. Overall, the GS3 has the better design because the rounded edges makes it more comfortable to use. Its just like the Iphone 3gs design vs the Iphone 4s design. The Iphone 3gs is a better design because it looks good and feels way nicer in your hand. I'm not to fond of the "plain" back of the GS3 or some of the curved accents that are easily seen on the white GS3. Overall, I like the design of the GS3 because it looks good, it is thin, and is the most comfortable in your hand.
Overall the winner is the GS3. I had a opportunity to get either phone. I actually was set on buying the HTC One X. That was until I read all the problems that they were having at the One X forums. In the end these were my observations. The last straw for me was when users were having stuttering problems with the video player months after the phone was released. They were able to fix the problem by deleting flv files that were in the gallery directory (you can't be serious lol). Another notable mention is that the HTC One X doesn't even have its own video player and they rely on the gallery out of the box. Finally, the GS3 has better codec support that is built in to the hardware.
AC

Should I get the SGS2 or the HTC One S?

I have a chance to grab any of these phones for $99 on a $20 plan.
The HTC One S has a dual core snapdragon S4 processor running at 1.5ghz and I am a fan of HTC.
But its near impossible to find this phone at any retailer

if your a fan of htc, go for it.
One S is still fairly newer so expect more updates than the GS2
GS2 has an micro SD card slot ( One S doesn't so limited internal memory for One S )
Both phones are good, go for what feels best for you.

one s shuld have a better display and resoloution.. But s2's super amoled plus screen is not bad either
As a previous owner of 3 HTC smartphones (2 of them flagships), and a current owner of an S2, I'd advise you to stay away from them and go for the S2. HTCs are plagued with issues, both hardware and software. Also, expandable storage is a bonus and the option to add a bigger battery to the S2 is great. The only advantage of the One S is the higher resolution of the screen but don't be fooled, the One S had an amoled screen with a pen-tile matrix while the S2 has a full RGB matrix. Even though on paper the HTC's resolution is better, there is not a dramatic difference in real life.
Get one s instead
Feels better in hand, not so slippy thought as s2.
Touchwiz is deadly boring thing when compared to sense 4.
Even on ics 4.0.4 one s feels little more fluid in graphics and more responsive than s2 on leaked official jellybean.
Have not tried one s running custom roms like cm10, but s2 gives me little dissapointment on custom rooms, most of them are broken due lack of full hardware acc/ project butter support.
Hovewer if you need micro sd support, extended replaceable battery, standart slot for sim cards, S2 may be good choice over one s too

The S4 1,5 Ghz Krait processor in One S is paired in performance with SIII's quad, being net supperior to SII (see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C661Tdorbl0 )
One S S4 has already received JB update with Sense 4+, SII still waiting.
BUT,
SII has a better screen (IMHO), has removable battery cover and a card slot of max 32 Gb. This means that you can buy a second battery for extra "stamina", or replace it if the original one gives signs of old age (prolonging the life of an S2) and extand the memory to a total of 12 GB (internal usable) + 32 GB = 44 GB :good:. Last, but not least, SII has an overall better community support as well as other small things such as accessories (you'll always easily find accessories for S2 with much more alternatives...hands-free, cases, bumpers, screen protectors, battery covers, batteries, etc).
To sum up:
If you upgrade your phone for a long period (one year or so) I would recomand SII. If you plan to change the phone in the next months, than you can go with HTC.
This is my opinion, take it as it is.
I have SGS2 and my gf HTC one S and I like both phones a lot but htc is way smoother
So if price is the same htc all the way
AW: Should I get the SGS2 or the HTC One S?
I would not get the One S, like all HTC phones there are many manufacturing errors, my Desire HD died after 6 months of usage, also HTC Support is ****, my battery Cover broke after a week and they promised me to send a new one, but it never arived.

Okay, let me brush you through the disadvantages or limitations of the S2:
- Regardless of the ROM you use, there will always be some lag when you open the contacts app for the first time (or whenever it gets killed)
- There is a delay of 1 second when you wake the device from standby.
- Certain people (like me), have issues with screen quality (black crush, bad color temperature, yellow tint, greenish greys, linen looking texture on grey backgrounds at low brightness).
-The S2's screen is 32bit, but Android doesn't use that color depth... So you will see color banding on almost every gradient background. (if you don't know what color banding is, you should google it...) I think the Mali 400 GPU also has something to do with this. Somebody correct me on this one.
- The S2 uses a Yamaha audio chip. This is a downgrade from its predecessor's Wolfson audio chip. The Yamaha chip is outright horrid. Forget about punchy bass and that wow factor. If you enable bass boost or make any EQ modification which increases bass, you will hear horrible distortion and speaker clipping. But loudspeaker performance is great.
- The camera modules (only rear camera) on certain S2's (like mine) are defective. There is stuttering while recording videos which have dark/light lighting (extremes).
Also, there is a pink spot in the center of all photos which are having grey or white colors. (This particular issue is faced by each and every S2 regardless of the camera module, if people deny it... they just aren't as observant.
- The battery life of the S2 is mediocre (not for me). Users complain that the S2 doesn't last them even 24 hours. (I'm in a different boat for this one)
Although the battery drains super fast while gaming or leaving the display on auto brightness.
However, you can always get a larger capacity battery which will make your S2 thicker. And uglier. And heavier. OK you got it.
- You will not receive updates on time, but you'll at least get updates. Due to the pending lawsuit with Apple, Samsung is silently disabling/changing certain features. (I shall not talk about these here, as its a vast and debatable topic)
Some of these issues that I have mentioned here can be fixed or camouflaged by either getting a replacement S2 or by rooting and flashing custom mods or ROMs.
Bottom line: There are several advantages of the S2 which the other users will tell you about, but I feel that the S2 shouldn't be on your list. Either get the One S or get something even better that has no or lesser issues and will last for a while.
Cheers.
EDIT:- I forgot to tell you about these issues:
- eMMc brick-bug issue, which means that if you root and use clockworkmod recovery to wipe the device, it will never wake up again. (i haven't had this issue)
- The screen burn-in issue which is there on all AMOLED phones.
- There is no notification LED.
- There is a delay when you press the home button. (can be fixed)
That's all.

Also the S2 has got a replaceable battery.

Higher resolution, beautiful industrial design, faster processor (significantly so) and most importantly Samsung have nothing to do with it. Why would you even consider the SII over the One S?
Ive since moved from the SII to greener pastures but owning the SII was one of the most frustrating expereicnes ive had with any item of technology (bar its predecessor, the Wave) in recent years .
Did not expect this many replies. The community that supports this phone is amazing. So a lot of posts tell me S2 is the way to go.
I really don't need a massive amount of storage (all my Top Gear episodes and Pimp my Ride series are on my 320GB PS3 Slim) but the pain of downloading a show, say a formula 1 race onto a computer then transferring the huge file on the One S is tedious then if you download the formula 1 race directly onto the sdcard then play it off the phone.
Screen size is not an issue, the pentile matrix on the One S doesn't really matter to me because I'm writing this on a device that has a VGA resolution. Higher density also is not a big deal, and since the screen is basically the same-even in size, it doesn't matter.
I do listen to music and I can tell that beats audio is a huge waste of money, and it's showing up everywhere, from laptops to a 2013 Chrysler 300C! I don't know what HTC was smoking when they decided to dump money into things that don't make any difference. I never knew about the audio chip set. I always thought that it was part of the motherboard! Shows how little I know about these things.
Camera is not an issue since I am no means a photographer and have no interest of that subject. I don't mind the SGS2's pink camera syndrome. Also, I did read in a review of the HTC One S that the display was better calibrated than the normal SAMOLED display.
I do miss the notification LED from my beloved BlackBerry 8520 and the HTC Wildfire S. It is not nesscary because the two capacitive buttons cam light up when I get a notification using root access and an app from the play store. And the notification LED on the HTC One S is barely noticeable.
So far with HTC I had no quality control issues, my sister who now has the wildfire s is careless to say the least and drops it everywhere. But it still works fine! I always get cases for everything, and I don't make any device of mine to fall 5 stories and expect it to work.
I want stock 4.0 and up look. I don't like manufacturer overlays like Sense or Touchwiz. So people tell me to root and recovery and cyanogenmod. But as with any device, all cyanogenmod ROMS have issues. I am not familiar with the issues on cm10 for this device, but development for cm10.1 for the htc one s has no working Camera whatsoever.
I do not want to upgrade again for around 2-3 years so as someone said, the SGS2 has more development than the One S but as long as there is cyanogenmod or paranoid android I will be happy. The one s seems future proof since HTC didn't release any info of its next flagship phones but you never know.
Again, thank all the posters for the advice on what to get.

I also forgot I am in no means Bear Grylls meang someone who takes their phone with them for a 2 month trip climbing Mount Everest and expects their phone to last for the trip (exaggeration lol )
I do not need a replaceable battery, however having that feature is nice. I remember the LG Rumour2 and LG Xenon had the same battery and I always swapped them out when I needed more juice. Funny story: back in the day I was moving and didn't have access to power for the most part, so I used the car battery to charge but I had to keep the engine running so the battery doesn't die and the alternator does all the work. Leaving the engine idiling made it overheat since the car was pretty old (1990 Honda accord) and we had to wait at our old house until the engine cooled with the last bits from the old house. Sitting down for 2 hours is not fun. So after that I always try to charge my battery on all my devices so I don't need to worry.
I am a previous owner of HTC Sensation XE, had to give it up, my s2's screen has tint but service guys won't replace it, Sensation had same screen and I'd prefer that over S2's, rest, S2 has lots of issues, that guy mentioned Em in detail ^^
One S is the way to go.
Edit: One S will have less buggy CM Roms and Sense isn't that bad
Edit 2: Just checked One S forum, Go for S2 if you want stock Android , I'm leaving it soon though.

I think a good device for your would be the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Right now, you can get one for relatively cheap, from 200-260 the device is a steal. You won't be needing to worry about it becoming obsolete for another 2 years, as it is still supported by Google and has a huge developer base community. And the best thing is...... AOSP ROMS will always be bug free and stable, due to sources from Google. It comes with 16 GB of storage like the One S, but has a replaceable battery. Did I also forget to mention that the Nexus has an HD screen? I understand that it to is AMOLED, but it doesn't seem to have as many issues as the Galaxy S2. I used to have a G- Nexus, but sold it due to a display issue. Don't get me wrong, I bought the device second hand, so don't think that all Nexus phones have issues. In my short time with the Nexus, it beats the S2 or performs equally in general use, to gaming, to browsing due to properly implemented Project Butter. If I hadn't got my S2 for 150 brand new, I would have bought another Nexus. Hope this helps!
I don't like the Galaxy Nexus because I'm outside for long periods of time on weekdays and my friend complained about the screen being too dark in sunlight. The One s and galaxy s2 screen is brighter.
Also, I cannot get that phone for $99 on a $20 plan.

Moto X Pros/Cons IMO

Moto X Cons/Pros IMO
Hi, this can be a base for new Moto X users coming from other smartphones.
Pros
1. Moto X has one of the smoothest and fastest Android experience you'll have with any smartphone today.
If you're coming from a non-nexus smartphone, you'll definitely feel that. Everything just works in Moto X. It's the smartphone with the nearest experience of an iPhone in terms of speed and smoothness.
2. Moto X feels great in hand. It has the perfect size for a smartphone.
3. Screen size is perfect, you can reach every corner without a hassle.
Although some users might feel the difference coming from a bigger screen, you'll definately get used to it in no time.
4. Good materials, it feels like you're holding a really well made product. Not just plastic stuff.
5. Twist to fast access to camera is great.
I'm still getting used to it, but accessing the camera without even touching the screen is very handy. I thought it would be too much of a hassle to do that movement every time, but it turns out you get used to it very fast, and that's pretty easy.
6. Touchless Control.
Although it's almost useless here in Brazil, I'll include that because is it's really useful for the main languages that it includes. I still use it to showoff though. :victory:
7. The speaker is one of the best I've listened so far.
It's one of the loudest, its quality is pretty good. Basses are good too.
8. Battery life is superb.
It lasts for your entire day and even a little bit more. Compared to my last phone, a S3, I can really feel the difference.
9. Battery charges really fast.
Within 2 hours or so, my Moto X charges from 0% to 100% with stock wall charger. Considering its battery time, it's an amazingly fast charge: 2 hours charge for a 24h+ usage. My S3 used to charge in 5h+
10. Fast updates.
This is not something that will certainly happen, but it seems Motorola is committed to bring us Android OS updates and improvements updates really quickly. Although it has not been released for my Moto X here in Brazil yet, it's been released for the Moto X faster than the Nexus devices. Let's hope they keep it like that for some years, and not just because it's the momentum smartphone.
11. Active Notifications.
The best thing invented after the wheel, don't have to say anything about this.
Cons
1. Onscreen buttons takes too much space.
Although Moto X screen size is perfect, its virtual buttons takes a lot of that space, and you might feel a big hit when coming from a 4.8/5" phone that has its entire dedicated screen.
2. Camera is terrible.
Coming from a S3, I definitely felt a big hit here. Camera takes a big time to shoot photos; it takes too long to focus; it takes pics with different tonality every time, it's even hard to shoot 2 similar photos from 2 different angles. Below is an example of that.
Camera software is not the best aswell. We don't have night mode, quality/px choice, effects, and so on.

Those 2 pics are not edited and were shot with the Moto X camera in practically the same moment.
3. Touchless Control doesn't work everywhere.
For example in Brazil, not all the commands are available and it's just useful to call for someone and check weather predictions. Despite using it to call for someone, we don't get audio feedback for any of the commands.
4. Too thin for 2 hands usage?
That's a real real personal thought, but although Moto X has the perfect size for a one-hand feel, I'm really having a hard time typing in the keyboard and I wouldn't blame if it was a little wider. The phone is thinner than the S3, that I used to rest both hands and type, and wider than a smartphone that we can rest one hand and use the other sidewards.
But I'm really sure it's something I'll get used to within some time.
5. No sdcard slot.
I'm yet to see if this will be really a down vote to me on Moto X, but at least in my old S3, I had to use a 16gb sdcard to store some extra musics and pics. The default 16gb was not sufficient.
Well, that's it. It's a really great phone and it was for sure a great improvement coming from a S3. I do miss S3's camera and physical buttons, but despite that and the listed above, there's nothing else I can blame this phone for.
Feel free to add your own opinions, cons and pros.

@op great pros and cons list.
My pros:
- active display
- great feel in hand
- touchless control is really impressive (even works when the phone is in your pocket and you have headphones plugged in)
- battery life
- speaker
- performance
- call quality
- twist to launcher the camera
Cons:
- display is way too over saturated
- phone is heavier than I thought
- The camera is probably the worst I have used from all the other flagship phones this year, it really is a joke.
- locked boot loader.
This phone does the phone functionalities extremely well though I must say.

Thanks OP for sharing your experience. I'd just like to elaborate on the design.
I don't really quite know how to summarize my idea, but the emphasis on user experience is so great, it's borderline criminal, and it's easily the most understated feature of the Moto X. The texture of the back feels extremely wonderful to hold that doesn't feel like cheap plastic nor cold hard aluminium. The contours (?) of the phone is curved in such a way that feels absolutely comfortable - I wouldn't be surprised if Motorola took the palm/hand profiles of many people and designed the back with it. In conjunction with that, the buttons are positioned well enough to allow me to reach for them whenever I need it. And that dent on the back cover! My finger now gravitates to that point to get a solid grab on the phone. _Finally_ I have a phone that doesn't have to depend on aluminium for that premium feel, or worse still, give UX design a middle finger and design a pile of manure (*coughsamsungcough*) for use.
I was really pleasantly surprised to find out for myself how good the speaker was. It's loud, but distortion is hardly noticeable at maximum volume. (Coming from a Galaxy Nexus, I suppose I get a bit too excited. heh) The camera's been improving steadily, thankfully, but it could use more repairs. I would appreciate it very much if I could take photos faster - the idea of twist-to-camera is kinda wasted on a slow-responding camera like this.
I have friends using the Nexus 5 beside me, and in all honesty I don't feel like I'm missing out on much. Then again, I paid a bloody premium for the phone . But seriously speaking, no regrets. At all. If I had to make the decision all over again, I'd still shoot for the Moto X. Never mind that there's no support for LTE in Malaysia or Singapore (I alternate between these two countries most frequently), or that the SD card slot is missing. I have not been so contented with a purchase in a very, very long time.

I believe a member is working on making it work on his in the accessories section.
What are the chances of a QI case being released? I would be all for that.
Cannot believe incipio decided to make a powermat charging case... WHO USES POWERMAT!?
My biggest and only real complaint about the Moto X is the camera. It does not feel like it matches up to even some 2011 phone cameras.
Nice Article.
I'm loving my Moto X 'Argentina Edition' (no root yet ).
On the 'Cons 4' section I swipe a lot, and never again hold my phoine with 2 hands
While driving I can text with the mic, not sure on portuguese, but spanish works great!
OK Google Now
is so much more sensitive in 4.4. I'm using the nexus 5 gel and my phone is constantly beeping and googling my last few words. Kinda strange
I'm still on 4.2.2 but I would have to say the camera, the smaller screen size, and the color saturation of the screen.
I bought a nexus 5 earlier this month and switch between the two phones all the time. {Google apps sync everything} and those would be my main complaints. Obviously the screen size is completely subjective, but I much prefer the n5 screen. I do like the battery life, but I usually have a charger at work and at home, and both phones seem to give me more than acceptable battery life.
The biggest complaint I have is the lack of accessories, cases and screen protectors for it.
I also would like our Canadian carriers to hurry up with the 4.4 updates.

Just ordered a Droid Turbo Over A Sony Z3v Did I make the right choice?

Im seriously in love with the droid but after checking out the specs of the Sony Z3 then playing and holding one, Im wondering if I made a bad decision. I kinda just rushed into the upgrade, I've been using a droid ultra for so long and loved it so I figured the upgrade would be even sweeter. My girlfriend got an iPhone 6 and wanted me to get one too so we can have a secure end to end conversation when I'm out of town but I can just do that from my iPad. So my phone gets here tomorrow and I was actually considering taking it straight to the Verizon store and exchanging it for a Z3v but what do you guys think. Are you loving your phones enough that the slight battery and screen improvements are worth the width and girth of the turbo over the slender sexy IPS water resistant up to 30 minutes Sony Z3v? The waterproof rating is tipping the scales for me but maybe Ill try it for a few days, if I hate it I think I have up to 14 days to exchange. Also No wireless charging or DLNA from the droid turbo COM' ON MAN!!!!
Can't really say since I haven't seen a Z3, but I love the turbo and it does have wireless charging.

It has miracast, not DLNA. That said, DLNA can be added with an application.
Wireless charging lol. Dat turbo charger.
Z3v better in everything
Seems like most people are pro droid turbo, so DLNA is covered with an app which is comforting as well as the reminder that turbo chargers and a massive battery means the phone wont really spend much time resting on a wireless charging mat. But damn dat V3 is freaking sexy.

The Sony Z3v is a hybrid between the Z2 and the real Z3. It's heavier and fatter than both. It has a bigger battery than the Z3 (3200 vs 3100), but does not last as long as the Z3 according to its specs. Its camera is also more or less a tweaked Z2 camera AFAIK.

Yea that solidifies my choice, I'm sticking with my droid turbo when it gets in tomorrow. Im sooooo excited now, I don't know why I freaked out at the last second. I guess its because I usually comprehensively research all the choices before I buy a new phone and I loved my Ultra so much I just figured on paper the turbo was going to be more of what I love so I didnt look at anything else. Then I held the new moto X with bamboo, then I got my hands on a Nexus 6. Then I got my hands on an Z3 (admittedly not the Z3v so I didn't know it was suckier than the Z3)
I really came away impressed with the Nexus 6 and Moto X, but I'm more about substance so I think I'm going to love the Turbo although the former two options are so sleek and sexy but admittedly too freaking large in the sense of the Nexus 6. The turbo feels like it would be a better fit even though its larger than the Ultra. But I loved my ultra soooooooooo much. Another plus is that if the screen breaks in the first two years from accidental drops you get a free replacement. After just reading that a few hours ago Im totally sold. And I don't even know why I'm paying $11 a month in insurance now, I guess in-case someone steals my phone but still that's a pretty bad ass guarantee from Motorola. I think Im in love with Moto all over again.
Z3 seems like a fragile phone to use if you don't use a case. That's one reason I avoided it is because it seems like the back glass is fragile and cracks easily when it is handled carefully. It's a slippery phone as well. I don't like sony's post processing on images, kinda noisy. Z3 has the looks going for it but I don't see much else.

It doesn't last as long as the Z3 because its on Verizon and using CDMA.

Silly statement. I know for a fact its not better in battery life. I am sure I can find other places.

Look at 99% of his posts. There all ridiculous. He clearly is not a fan of the DT but spends most of his time on the DT forms.
I just swapped the Z3 for the Droid Turbo.
I previously had the tmobile Z3 which felt great in the hands...the verizon Z3 is significantly thicker that the tmo version. It generally felt bulky being that i came from a slimmer model.
The Droid Turbo feels great in the hands
I got the ballastic nylon and haven't regretted yet. Great battery life and feels good in the hand.
The Turbo is a great device.. But if you're into flashing Roms and adding a bunch of tweaks to your device then you made the wrong choice with both. Both devices are locked down and no sign of root to be seen.. Or even lollipop for that fact anytime soon.
But its a great device I prefer it over the Z3v.. You're getting a better device in my eyes..
Moto maxx if you're on a gsm network. Had the turbo, sending it back since I got the maxx in. It's so bs that vzw has moto connect locked down, I can't use it unless activated on vzw, but everything else worked. Using on tmobile
If you're looking for root, you chose poorly.

You'll be happy with the Droid Turbo. Just be prepared for the long waits to upgrade to lollipop and other updates. It is a Verizon exclusive and may be held up longer for testing prior to releasing the upgrade.
