Would you trade n7 for galaxy tab 10.1? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Would u trade ur n7 for a galaxy tab 10.1. My friend wants to trade me strait up. I like the bigger tab but I love the n7 tho.
Sent from my Samsung Cyanogenmodded S III

Nope. Sammy can go take a hike with their 10.1.

You get a bigger screen, but that's the only major benefit. The Nexus 7 has a better CPU (Tegra 3 vs Tegra 2, quad core vs dual), and is probably going to have a better development scene (however, I have no idea on the current state of development on the GT 10.1).
Edit: Hmm, it also seems to get cellular and rear camera. If you want cellular, and have a want for a rear camera, I don't see it as that bad of a deal.

No, I've never liked 10" tablets, iPads or otherwise. The N7 is the perfect size for me.
Don't need the cellular since I can tether to my HOX, and taking pictures or video with a tablet makes you look like an idiot.

Yeah I like that it has a rear can but do t really need it I have an s3. But I really like the bigger screen and as fas as the development I already feel too caught up with my s3 that I just flashed paranoid android to my n7 and left it alone.
I guess I just wanna feel good about giving up a newer product for an older model

If you can sell the Tab for more than the cost of the Nexus 7, then it might be worth it to make the trade, sell the Tab, and then buy a new Nexus 7.

True but If I trade id just keep it. But thanks guys for ur input

The Tab 10.1 is a nice device. Its a generation behind in specs. I liked my 10" Transformer but it had a micro SD card and HDMI out. I found it tedious to lug around and eventually stopped using it because of such. Everytime I wanted to use it, it was dead.
I sold my transformer for $200. The N7 was $250+tax. Not sure what the Tab sells for but they are probably being flooded in the market since the 10" Note is out.
Sammy stopped updating the Tab a long time ago. I'm not sure if it even officially got ICS let alone jelly bean. The N7 has JB and will get KeyLime Pie when its released and probably LoliPop.
Tell him to sell it over in the Market and pick up a N7.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium

I've always hated larger tablets... once you hit 10" tablets I find little reason to not just get a laptop and be done with it. While the N7 is smaller, it's very workable. We're remodeling some areas of our house, and I keep a few pictures and measurement notes down in my N7. When I'm at Lowes, it's nice to pull out the N7 and get a better idea of what I'm facing at home. Since the N7 fits in my back pocket, it's only another +1 to that court.
That's just my 2c though. I've talked to some people who love 10" tablets. I personally don't, and on that premise alone I wouldn't do the trade. That being said, you're also swapping out for slightly older hardware too. Nothing wrong with that if it's worth it, but I see no compelling reason that I personally would do that trade.

Heavy tab 10.1,I like my N7

NNNNOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thats the first thing i want to say to you.
i am ex tab 10.1 owner.
the performance is TERRIBLE!!!!
i started using from stock honeycomb 3.1
its laggy beyond words, and i was forced to learn to root and flash custom roms that are 3.2
things got SLIGHTLY better but it was still laggy.
simple things like typing on keyboard, bringing up on screen keyboard, scrolling are still choppy.
then ICS came, and i flash various customs like AOKP and CM9
things got better again, overall UI is acceptable, no where near buttery smooth but still ok.
however only the UI smoothness improved in ICS, apps, games, any slightly 3D games will play in "slow motion" or "stop frame" style.
the tegra2 just dont cut it. its a dissapointment.
i sold my tab10,1 the moment i saw google IO announce nexus 7.
nexus 7 is superior in every way then that tab10.1 in terms of performance, responsiveness.
the only weakness is the small screen, but that gives it another benefit which is better portability.
the tab 10,1 browser crashes on a daily basis.
memory management is terrible even on ics.
try load FB desktop page on tab 10,1 stock browser, keep scrolling down,
as the FB page loads more newsfeeds, the scrolling becomes soo laggy, and it will start FC eventually.
NEVER trade your nexus 7 for tab10.1. you will surely regret it.

I actually did the opposite, sold my Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and got the N7. Main reason was the weight and portability, I lasted 30 minutes with the 10.1 in the bath and my arms got tired. With the N7, I can watch movies anywhere, holding anyway I want and it feels great. Plus it's much more snappier (I did install a CM10 nightly on the 10.1 which was much better than its stock ICS but wasn't as great).

Nexus 7 is the best Android tablet out there in my opinion. Not just the best 7 inch, the best. I'm somewhat of a perfectionist when it comes to tech. I've had an Acer Iconia 10" and 7", Transformer prime, Galaxy tab 2, and now this. Not quite every tablet on the market but a pretty decent cross section. I've also had a close look at a few other tabs.
The only thing that comes close is the transformer prime. That thing is ok but it's harder to hold, much heavier and the dock seems like a nice idea but ends up being a pita in practice.
This thing is a little pocket rocket, very powerful whilst being very easy to hold even for long periods and extremely portable.
By the way the galaxy tab is ****. Samsung don't even bother to support it so it was still on honeycomb when I last checked two weeks ago.

Htc Flyer or tab 10.1

i know these two tab are very different due to the size and os but i am stuck between buying either one. i would like the flyer because its portable, fits in my pocket on the go and is easier to manage when in public. but i feel the flyer is not worth its price, its basically outdated due to the fact that its single core and it runs on 2.3 not honey comb. so i am afraid it will crash often like the tab 7 use to do to me. i would love the galaxy tab 10.1 i already seem what samsung did with the tab 7 so i cant imagine how much better this can be. i would love honey comb seem to be very stable and smooth running on dual proccessors. my only one con is that i think its big and yes i have read else where that 10.1 will only be good for couch surfing or home.
so what should i do portabilty, gps, can take it to work and not be in my way, or 10.1 tab
Good questions. I bought my Tab last Friday and I can tell you that it's not too big. Yes it's bigger than a kindle or nook, but because it's so thin and light, it's not overbearing. I've been using it on my train ride to work and my hand doesn't get tired. I think you'll be okay. It's definitely a nice piece of hardware.
If you are not in a rush to purchase a tablet, then wait for the 8.9 to be released.
I bought the Flyer and took it back a few days later. In this day of Honeycomb, the Flyer really did feel like a big phone and that's about it. The $80 pen was a ripoff and not very useful since there are only 2 apps that worked with it.
I figured the Flyer with pen was $580, and 32gb Tab only $20 more, so picking mine up on Friday.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
I returned my flyer as well. Nice but slow and the pen software isn't that great. In scribble mode the discard button is where I rest my wrist and I lost note after note because of that. Tool it back and pre ordered the Toshiba Thrive because I think the Tab 10.1 is a no go with no sd slot.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
hands down IMO the galaxy tab is better than any other tab out there. If you're looking for something a bit more portable wait for the 8.9.
I have both of these. I have a HTC Flyer and a Google IO 10.1 Tab.
They are very different beasts.
In terms of stability and speed the Flyer really flys. I had no crashes, no performance slow down and its portable and has 3G built in. Yes it does feel like a big phone - it even lets you send text messages here in the UK but... it feels so much more stable than the tab.
The tab is much bigger and much thinner but it crashes and freezes more than the beta IOS5 on my iPad 2. It is really disappointing.
Both tablets show slow downs when orientation is changed but given the choice of only 1 of the 2 I would go with the flyer. Hands down.
Yes it is single core but it really isn't noticible, if anything the tab feels slower.
Of course the best tablet is still the iPad 2 in every aspect but not everyone can have all 3 tablets like me!
I thought the GT10.1 had GPS?
The Flyer is dreadfully overpriced in my opinion, especially to not even be running Honeycomb. I'd definitely pass on it and wait for the Tab 8.9.
Also: ^^ Yes, the GT 10.1 has GPS.

How is the iPad 2 the best tablet? Didn't see that coming LoL Of course it is not the best tablet.
Anyway, I agree that the flyer is a totally different tablet. I also have both. I use the flyer for on the road, as my PIM and for note taking (love that) and the Galaxy Tab for all other things. Have hardly had any problems with the 10.1(v) . But then again, I mainly use the built-in apps.
the tab is a great piece of hardware held back by a very young os. Right now the flyer is a better choice, but in a month it might be a totally different story.

Galaxy tab 10.1 vs EEE prime vs IPAD2

Just found out i am going to get lucky this year and get a tablet for xmas.
one of my options are the Galaxy Tab 10.1.
what i would like to do is get some input from people who already have them. Would you stick with the 10.1, Go with the EEE transformer prime when it comes out on Dec. 19th, or go with an IPAD2?
i have the Galaxy S phone, and i'm loving it, i have the superclean Gingerbread on it, and it just works. My gut is saying i should just go with the EEE prime, but if a lot of you would never part with your galaxy tab 10.1 because it is higher quality over the EEE, i might get that instead. do you have any issues with the 10.1? if so what are they?
thanks for any help you may give to help me make a decision.
if you love your phone get a android tablet. that knocks out the ipad2(which is good because apple sucks and you want control over your device)
the tab is a great tablet but if you have a choice in free tablets for xmas get the new prime. that tablet is like the next generation of tablets.
If you're going to get an Android tablet this year, get the Prime. It's the first second-gen tablet that's been released and is significantly more powerful than the G-Tab. So far, the shortcomings of it are: 1) QC issues which also effected the first Transformer, 2) Wi-Fi only supports 2.4GHz, and 3) the speakers are mono and on one side of the device. Good luck trying to get one. The pre-order process turned in to a cluster f- and all the major retailers are now saying at least after X-Mas and most likely in January. Read the posts in the Prime forum.
As for iOS vs. Android, that's a personal decision. Apple's dropped the price of refurbs and you can pick up a 32GB for $499. New casing, new battery, same one year warranty.
Yeah, after looking at some of the threads in the prime forum, looks like the galaxy tab 10.1 is my only choice if i'm going to get it for xmas.
damn, was really looking forward to getting the prime.
just a quick question, is samsung, or the dev's working on porting ICS to the 10.1?
thanks

Both. Samsung's announced ICS officially in Q1 and the devs, including CM, are working on a build. The Tab's got to represent Samsung until March or April when a next-gen is released so it wouldn't surprise me if it's one of the first tablets to get ICS in order to extend its selling life. And since Samsung was Google's launch partner for ICS with the GN they're way ahead of everyone else when it comes to working with the OS.
Don't be disappointed in getting a Tab. It's got the best display by far, great build quality, and Samsung's always the best when it comes to audio and video codecs. If you look at benchmarks the Tab outperformed all other Teg2 based tablets. I don't know where you source your music but the Tab is the only one that supports Rhapsody's DRM via MTP. With a subscription, you can download thousands of songs to play locally when you're not connected to Wi-Fi. And check out Plex and PlayOn for streaming.
P.S. - Get it at Costco. They have a 90 day return policy so if something better comes along you can always return it.
"the speakers are mono and on one side of the device"
WTF lol, your kidding right?
I love my 10.1... I sometimes get lost just looking how pretty stuff looks on that screen... Just perfect.
Running stock 3.2 (Grabbed from here) and rooted, that's it. No fancy custom roms or kernel.
There is one thing you DO need and that's the touchscreentune app from the market and that needs root (WHich is pretty easy to do). It will cost you 5 bucks but it will make a world of difference for your tablet. Samsung, for reasons unknown, decided that you must have around 1 second "lag" before the touchscreen respond to your touch. With this app and it's default setting, it will react instantly and just makes the tablet feel so much better.
Ohh yeah, and the 10.1 has stereo speakers which do a pretty decent job, if you ask me. Great for youtube and the odd tv show.
Don't own any apple products, but if you like slow and smooth UI animations, I would go with that, since people complain that they don't have to wait half a second for a "smooth" animation for finish on Android.
My wife has a iPhone 4, I tried sending a picture on it, by Email. I picked the picture, then I had to wait for it to be "smoothly" animated into my email... Instead of just putting it my email and let's get to the sending part. If you fancy that sort of thing, get the iPad.
I would get an ipad2, I would almost rather have my load 1 than the galaxy tab I sold the ipad to buy.
The ipad just works, it has better accessories, better games and a hell of a lot less lag. I also didn't have to root it, flash custom roms and mods to make me satisfied with how it worked.
Sure it doesn't have flash but it seems like android can't play any flash videos that smoothly anyways, but different strokes for different folks.
I love my Samsung vibrant for its customizability but I believe ios is better for tablets.
Oh and I have not yet used or heard much about the transformer prime but it seems better spec'd

I am the exact opposite ...... I sold my iPad2 on craigslist and bought the Galaxy Tab 10.1..
IMHO the iPad is overrated and is very limited..... iPad's are for people who want simplistic and ease of use .... Android and the Tab is for people who want options.... I quickly grew very tired and bored with the rather bland iPad and iOS....
You description / understanding of rooting is different from mine.. I don't look at it as a need to do thing, I look at it as a way to improve my user experience... Perhaps I am doing something wrong with my Tab because I never had any lag issues on my Tab... And I believe 3.2 solved the perceived lag issues... I am on Task's 8.0 ROM and it ROCKS!
A jailbroken iPad2 still has less customization options than a stock un-rooted Tab... Root the Tab and bam! Customization galore..... Every iPad out there looks exactly the same.. Bland and dry.... Other than different wallpapers, every iPad looks exactly the same...
To boot, 512MB RAM... Really?????? It is 2011 is it not?

I love android, I love my s2. I loved my galaxy tab p1000. However 10.1 and Xoom suck because of a very very slow os despite upgrade to 3.2. Ipad2 is super fast. I prefer android with gingerbread and will buy a ics tablet but honeycomb is too slow.
This thread is funny... iPad faster? Perhaps a split second but the trade off is a very very limited OS...I will take Android and the blink of an eye slower (not even noticeable to me) for my widgets and customization options...
#funny
Nope. I have used Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 with HC 3.2 And the Ipad 2 is several times as fast and several times smoother. Whether it is just scrolling through apps or browsing on the internet.
IMO for a person who is used to Gingerbread on a S2 or Ipad/2/Ios, HC is not usable on a Dual Core. It is like running Windows 7 on a Pentium 3 1GHz.
ICS will probably be different and will probably be faster or as fast as GC.
So I would recommend buying an Ipad 2 right now and upgrading to ICS in a few months!
I've been drinking the Apple Kool-Aid since 1985 with the FatMac 512K. I'm an old geek in the IT world, and have owned more computers than many young 'uns have ever touched.
I've never paid full price for any computer, other than Macintoshes, however. And, for the most part, the quality and integration has been worth the premium.
However, I have several friends with iPads, and though they make nice remote controls for the AppleTV, and good book readers, IMHO there is no justification for the ridiculous prices that they command.
I feel that the Galaxy Tab with Task's ROM version 8 is the iPad's equal in usability, its superior in customizability, and kills it in value per dollar.
The display is a higher resolution, finer dot pitch, in 16:10 for movies (closer than the iPad's 4:3), etc. i typically love Apple's products, and can see the added value. However, I'd never pay more than $300 for an iPad. And I have no buyer's remorse at the $325 for my Galaxy Tab. Plus another $10 to Task650 in thanks.

You must have used a magical iPad and a defective Tab.... While I agree the iPad is a tad faster and smoother, I would not exaggerate the difference at the cost of credibility......

From GTab 10.1 to Nexus 10

Well, I decided to take the plunge. I have upgraded and moved on to the Nexus 10. This tablet has been good to me for the last 18 months, but I don't want to rely on rooting to have the latest software and sometimes there's just a little bit of lag that's upsetting. And I'm just not a fan of TouchWiz.
Tablets aren't as important to me as the smartphone that I am carrying, but I think this upgrade will last me a long long time. So it was worth it.
I haven't heard or read about many people here talking about the Nexus 10 yet*. Should I assume that everyone is just content with the Galaxy Tab 10.1? How much longer do you guys see yourself with it?
* Edit: let me clarify since this was not understood. Many forums talk about the "next" device to move on to. For example, the Galaxy Nexus forum had lots of talk going on about "should I upgrade to the Nexus 4?" There really was no 10" Nexus tablet, and it seems our device (10.1) is the logical precursor (Grandparent?) to the Nexus 10, which seems to be a GTab 2 10.1 on steroids.
Edit #2: See my post on page two with a full comparison now that I have both devices.

It was a little bit of "I got my brand new toy", please understand him...
But the OP was right... there are not so many Nexus 10 users here.... in the Galaxy Tab forum.
Sorry, for being off topic... but I don't see the topic.
How do you guys not understand the original post. I am specifically asking Galaxy Tab users, not users of any other device, if they plan on upgrading.
The Galaxy Tab has now been around for a long time. It seems this might be the next logical step for some of you. Or does the Galaxy Tab do everything you need still?
I really only got the Nexus 10 after the Nexus 4 was sold out and I wanted to walk away with something. But I'm still happy about the upgrade. Though I could have used the tab quite a bit longer.

Just ignore it.. I understood your post just fine.
To answer your post. I moved on to the N7.. I purchased my 16GB version then two weeks later the 32GB was released and I exchanged it out. I haven't looked back since.. My Galaxy Tab sits on my TV stand and has been there for weeks now with an uptime of 445 hrs (just checked) and a screen on time of 5 minutes.. It's literally a paperweight. I tried to use the tab as just an e-reader but.. Seriously.. The Tab 10.1 sucks.. Once you use a real tablet on real hardware that isn't crippled and under-performing the flaws, lag, stuttering and slowness we already knew about the Galaxy Tab 10.1 are just heightened to the point you want to smash it.
So yes.. I moved on. I would buy the Nexus 10 if I had a need for a 10 inch but after using the N7.. I no longer want a 10 inch tablet.. For me the 7inch form factor is perfect.
BTW Congrats on your purchase and welcome to the Nexus family! Home of prompt updates straight from Google and pure AOSP support right out of the gate.. You'll never buy a non-Nexus device again

I'm not yet satisfied with the Nexus 10, perhaps I'll go for google's next 10inch tablet, though I might get a N7 before then, but I think I'd miss the larger sceen (a more likely scenario is that somebody else in the household would be the primary user)
P.S. Actually, maybe I would get it if I wasn't getting the N⁴, but two new devices is probably)too much for me atm, and (for me) the N10 definitely doesn't justify it.
Well I thank the last two users for "getting" it. That's all I was asking for, the perspective of 10.1 users.
To me the N10 advantages over the 10.1 are:
AOSP - No Touchwiz! (or Rooting needed)
Prompt Updates
Resolution makes reading a joy
Lag free on the A15 Cortex.
Doesn't look like an iPad
Lightweight but apparently a very sturdy, industrial design
If I DID choose to root and ROM, a bigger community because it's a Nexus(?)
Standard MicroUSB Charging connection
These things are a wash:
Cameras? Meh. Never use them anyway.
Battery life? I've never had any opinion of the 10.1's battery life. It's not a smartphone that I am constantly using so it last me several days in-between charges. I'm sure the N10 will be the same.
Design and looks: The 10.1 probably does look better? Though, more Appleish. So it's about even.
I honestly wanted to find more reasons why keeping the 10.1 makes sense. And as far as a point-by-point argument, the Nexus 10 wins hands down. But that doesn't really matter because it depends on how you are using a tablet. To me, a tablet is always secondary to my smartphone. I use it far less. The Browser, Email, Google Reader, scan the news apps. That's mostly it. I don't play games. I don't video chat. So really, even though I think the Nexus 10 is far superior, the 10.1 did most of what I wanted just fine. So I can't blame anyone for keeping the 10.1 (unless you're still using it on Stock TouchWiz 4.0, where it is soo laggy, etc? My Jelly Bean ROM has been fantastic!). If you don't like to root to "fix" things, but you are a heavy tablet user, than I'm thinking you probably are looking to upgrade--which goes back to the original question: Is the Nexus 10 good enough? I guess I'll see in a couple days... I'll probably post back some comparisons later.

This.. This is why I am no longer interested in a 10inch.
Before I had my N7 as you said my phone would be my go to device and my Tab was second fiddle.. It was big, not very portable and kind of awkward to use in most circumstances unless you were just flipping through a book or something. Now.. Ever since I got my Nexus 7.. My phone is second fiddle.. The N7 form factor is like a phone on steroids.. Larger enough to make reading, gaming, app use and browsing much easier but small enough where it doesn't feel like you're Fred Flintstone holding a slab in your hands either.
This is ultimately the reason my Galaxy Tab has fall to the way side entirely and also my phone.. The 7 inch form factor is the perfect combination between phone and tablet..

I never needed a tablet but I liked my TAB (especially since ICS). But the Nexus 7 really hit the spot: now I feel I DO need to have a tablet around. For me (old eyes and all), the 10 inch screen is a bit better for classic WEB browsing (and a lot better as a remote to my PCs), but the format and weight of the N7 makes it the "go to" device for anything but "work stuff".
I thought a lot about the N10 these past couple of weeks, but in the end I passed (and I still have the TAB: not worth the hassle of selling at this point; I'll use it intermittently until I find a potential Android recruit to recycle it to). I think I may wait for the Nexus 8 (lighter, much thinner bezel, high ppi... and able to replace any and all of my remotes).
P.-S. --- The N7 fits in the pockets of my hoodies: no X10 would!
I have a wifi tab 10.1, a 4G tab 7.7, and a GS3.
I use the 7.7 and GS3 far more than I use the 10.1. Probably use the 7.7 the most. It's portability and the 4G give it an advantage over the 10.1 while the larger screen gives it an advantage over the GS3. I'd love to get a N10, but it's more because I love gadgets than any real need for it. I'd love the S Pen functionality of the Note 10.1, but wish it was quad core... And obviously the N10 doesn't have this. So the primary draw of the N10 is the display and the prompt updates since it's a reference device.
If I had the money, I'd probably get a N10...though Engadget wasn't terribly impressed by it. I may try to get my hands on a Note 10.1 cuz the S Pen functionality would make it a good tool for work.
Never been impressed by the N7. The screen feels narrow and its fat/heavy. I'll happily exchange the quad-core processor for the thin, light design and AMOLED screen of the tab 7.7.

What exactly do you mean by "pocket" here? The two hand thing? If so, how tall are you/what size do you where? I'm not a big person and I've gotten my gt10.1 in there :S
I have been looking at many of the next tablets being offered by most of the companies. The Nexus 10 is tempting, but I DO use the camera for some things, and the 10 inch screen is important to the main function for which I bought a tablet. I tried the 7 inch units and they're just too small for my needs. I use my tablet for a moving-map display and electronic flight-bag while I'm flying. I actually use an app that does a split-screen and shows me charts and flight data at the same time. The 7-inch was just too small for that. I had a Transformer Prime for a while and really liked the display and operational speed, but the lack of a functional wifi and GPS took that out of the picture in a hurry. For the moment, the Tab 10.1 still does the job. But I am looking.
I have used my Nexus 10 all weekend and can now compare it with the G Tab 101.1
GTab 10.1 vs N10
Screen:
N10 pixels/resolution obviously blows the GTab 10.1 away; but it seems like the N10 screen is more washed out compared to the deep colors of the GTab.
Speakers:
Maybe it's my hearing, but the GTab seems to have louder sound
Performance:
Oh my, not even close. The Exynos 5 in the N10 poops on the Tegra 2. FINALLY Android does not have any lag. Whereas the GTab hails from Lag City. (Rooting and Roming obviously helps).
Cameras:
Even? I took pic's, I skyped, saw no difference.
Build quality:
The N10 does not feel like a Samsung device. The GTab feels like a Toy in comparison. Though it feels much lighter (even though the specs say they are closer) so some may prefer that.
Software:
The GTab requires you to root it for decent performance. Or you can have full functionality to go along with lagginess and TouchWiz. The N10 is a Nexus. A full working 4.2. Yes it's new so there are bugs, but thankfully Samsung does not handle updates.
Battery:
More or less even. MAYBE the GTab 10.1 has a slight, slight edge? not sure yet.
Extras:
N10 has an HDMI port I probably will never use. Though it does have a notification light which is really helpful. Neither have SD's. I am fan of the wide bezels on the N10 because my thumb does not cover the screen.
Conclusion:
I feel like the N10 is so much better, but really, the GTab 10.1 did most of what I needed and did it "ok" to "well". The N10 just does it a little quicker. And it's nice to know I don't have to root it to be satisfied. So on those levels it is worth it. Otherwise, if you can not afford it, there is no reason why you need to be an early adopter. I think many GTab 10.1 users may end up getting the Nexus 7 instead as that is become standard for many hard core Android users. If you watch tons of videos, then the N10 is highly recommended. If you can not tolerate TouchWiz and rather not mod the device, also get the N10. For everyone else? No rush.
The N10 is 1.5 years newer.. It should smoke the 10.1
I'm dying to replace the tab with a new device, before the N10 I was considering the Asus TF700 but I'll only jump ship when one of them deliver a 3G option, I seriously don't get why the don't release mobile data versions in tandem of Wi-Fi only option.
But I suspect and hope Google bring it out soon, I don't think Asus will do now, not now the infinity has been out for so long.
Swyped, from my finger to your face, on my Samsung Galaxy Note II
I will try to present a slightly different view. Before I was forced to get my Samsung 10.1, I had a 10.1v which I truly think is a much better device than the plain 10.1. Eventually I will cannibalize my 10.1 to get my 10.1v working again.
My new tablet has to have the following features: 10" screen, 3G, quad-core and preferably a pen too. Such a device is still some ways from hitting the market and until such a time, I guess I'm content with my 10.1.
I have a 4.7" phone so there is little point for me getting a less than 10" tablet. Call it due to my older eyes but for me 10" is a very comfortable size, I don't even miss my notebook as I also have a Logitech BT keyboard. I have no problems carrying the tablet. I can understand that it comes down to a personal choice where screen size is concerned, for me the big screen just makes it easier to work with the device.
I did root my tab as it makes me uncomfortable that I can't even make a decent backup without a root. If I can put JB on my 10.1, it would definitely delay a new device
I really want to get the Nexus 10, but I currently only use my Galaxy Tab 10.1 for infrequent browsing and even less frequent Angry Birds Star Wars. I may get the Note 10.1 for my wife because she really wants the stylus---oops, I mean the S-Pen.
If Google adds a native Android feature allowing two apps to run side-by-side (like the Note, but implemented better), I'd buy the Nexus 10 tomorrow.
For now, I'll keep puttng up with the mild lag of the GTab 10.1.
I am buying a Nexus10 32Gb (it should arrive Monday) but I also have been very happy with my 10.1 GT-7510 (aka p4wifi). I have been running the following JellyBean 4.1.2 ROM for almost 2 weeks now without any problems.
Make a nandroid, then install:
AAcount's TWRP 2.3.2.3: recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1833136
Make another backup with TWRP if you were coming from ClockworkMod (paranoid)
Clean Wipe
triptosyll's unofficial AOKP November 12th Build: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1953915
Formula84's JZ054K Gapps: http://goo.im/devs/Formula84/gapps-jb-20121012-4.1.2-JZO54K
Reboot, set everything up (I use Titanium Backup Pro)
then install AAccount's A1 kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1833136
Go into AOKP performance tab and select 1.6Ghz OC or 1.5Ghz if you're conservative.
Win!!
Install "voodoo sound" sound control panel for amazing audio quality
Install Dice or MX Player with the appropriate Tegra 2 codecs and you'll be able to play virtually any 720p video without lag.
Install Dolphin Browser with Flash and Jetpack for Desktop Browser experience and install Chrome for mobile browser experience.
Everything works great. Google Now works, front and rear cameras work as well. It will take an hour the first time through, but I think you will be super happy with your Tab. This could extend the viable life of the 10.1 for another 6-12 months until the next big thing comes along.
(Of course all of this is at your own risk. It works great for me, but might not work so well for anyone else.)
On the Nexus10 front, I can't believe that anyone would buy a 16Gb tablet! If I have a couple nandroids and a few movies or TV show seasons, I'm well above 16Gb. Right now I have <5Gb free on my GTab10.1 and I only have a few games, 1 season of Breaking Bad and about 3 or 4 hours of music on it. This IMO is "minimum" local storage for a week away from home on a business trip. 5+ hour flights are a drag without copious local data.
I'd love to buy a nexus 10, sadly it's not available in Italy, maybe it never will be
that means my money is going to Asus this time, 299$ for 32Gb plus 3g is the best deal out there in my opinion; that said I'll keep my gtab 10,1 to watch movies in case I'm not satisfied with the 7 inch display.
OK, first impressions on the Nexus10 from someone who's been an Android user since the OG Droid and has had a Galaxy Tab 10.1 Wifi for 16 months.
It is a little bit wider and almost exactly the same height and thickness of the p4wifi
The Nexus10 is heavier, 604g vs 558g on my kitchen scale. Its width makes it seems a bit heavier since it puts more torque on your hand if holding it one handed.
The buttons are in the same orientation as the p4wifi
The buttons on the Nexus10 are slightly further to the left than on the p4. This leads me to accidentally hit the power button more since I'm used to being able to grab the tab by that corner safely
The buttons are lower-profile and seem a bit chintzy compared to the p4
The Nexus10 screen is warmer and a bit "dimmer" than the p4. I think the p4 actually has slightly better contrast. This is a subjective judgement. I'm using automatic brightness on both. Although the stock auto-brightness stinks. I need to get AOKP installed on the Nexus10 and tweak the brightness.
Nexus10 does indeed poop on the p4 from performance perspective. It is like night and day even running the Stock Nexus 10 versus highly overclocked and tweaked p4.
I haven't auditioned the headphone out yet. Will get some high-bitrate music on here and try it out soon.
It looks better in person than in the pictures. I think in the pictures that the roundedness of the Nexus10 looks unattractive, but in person it is fine.
I am very dissappointed with how few accessories have been announced so far. I suppose this isn't surprising, but I would really like a bluetooth keyboard case for it. The Logitech ZAGG case for my p4wifi, of course, doesn't fit at all.
My very cheap "Acase" flip case ALMOST fits. It is very snug due to the extra width. I think with a little Xacto knife action, I'll have a usable but not ideal case. The speaker holes aren't too far from the charging port.
My wife actually prefers the p4 for reading books as the Nexus10 is "too small". At least on Google Play (I haven't played with Kindle Reader yet) this is not merely a matter of zoom level. For example the free "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" the pictures of the Rabbit are about 2x the size on the p4 as on the Nexus10. I assume this is because the Play Store hasn't been fully adapted for high-dpi devices yet.
The p4 would slowly charge when plugged into USB but the Nexus10 seems to actually lose charge while plugged into USB. Hopefully custom kernels will be available soon with "fast charge" capability.
Well hope that helps somebody make a decision.

Worthwhile upgrade from Galaxy Tab 10.1?

I'm starting to find my Galaxy Tab 10.1 a bit laggy and am contemplating moving up to a Nexus 10, but am a bit conscious that it's quite soon to upgrade a tablet after only two years.
Just wondered what Nexus 10 owners' opinions are on it, especially those who have upgraded from tablets from a similar generation to the Galaxy Tab 10.1; is it a worthwhile upgrade?..

I'm very well placed to answer this; I upgraded to the Nexus 10 from Galaxy Tab 10.1 myself!
The biggest improvement is the screen; I found the screen of the tab 10.1 to be reasonably blurry with text in particular. this was a big annoyance for me given that magazines and news feeds are what I use my tablet for most! The nexus screen so incredibly sharp and graphic novels and magazines like practically like paper laid over a lightbulb - some people have commented on the colour profile of the nexus 10 being quite well matched to printed paper but that suits me just fine!
As for speed and general use, I had Cyanogenmod 10.1 on my tab 10.1 (heh) so speed was not necessarily a problem (I did try going back to the official ICS update from Samsung but it was soooooooo slow compared to CM10.1 I switched back only a couple of hours later! Even so, I have definitely noticed an improvement in the speed of the UI and general s[need at which things respond...
aaaaaaaanyway, the Nexus 10 is better than the tab 10.1 is every way; thinner, lighter, faster, sharped (man this screen is awesome!) and official updates as soon as the OS is released rather than a year later and awfully bloated unlike Samsung ROMs

Agree with everything above. My wife has the 10.1 and it literally hurts my eyes looking at the text while comparing to this. She's also running stock and it's slow as could be. I should really do the thing every husband should do.... Root it and install cyanogenmod

you'll seriously notice a whole world of difference with CM10.1 on there! It's like a whole new device
Nexus 10 is still better in every way, though!
Also, forgot to mention that N10 has standard MicroUSB data/power/OTG and micro HDMI so you can attach extra stuff and output to TV without silly proprietary adapters! Given my phone (Note) also uses Micro USB, this is a definite plus point (no idea why they put it "upside down" compared to every other MicroUSB device I've used but hey ho)
I come from a galaxy tab 10.1 to is a big upgrade faster web browsing and the screen to

I did consider installing CM, but last I heard there were still some bugs on there (screen flickering amongst others) that put me off doing so a bit...
I might wait until I/O to make sure nothing better is announced and might take the plunge when I visit New York at the end of May, as that'll work out cheaper for me than buying it here in the UK.
For those who have upgraded from Galaxy Tab 10.1s, how do you find the battery on the Nexus 10? I mostly tend to use my Tab for watching movies/TV on long flights so need a fairly long battery life (and decent codec support) and I've ready really mixed things about the Nexus 10's battery life so far.
I upgraded from the tab 10.1 and it was definitely a great decision. No regrets. There's nothing the tab 10.1 could do that the Nexus can't and the Nexus is much much smoother. The only thing I didn't like was the lack of Tablet UI but PA has fixed that on my Nexus.
I too came from Galaxy Tab 10.1 to Nexus 10... Huge improvement. My galaxy tab was running cm10.1 and was laggy and I knew it was slow but I didn't really know how bad it was til I watched some videos of the nexus 10 running some tasks in a fraction of time it was taking me on my Gtab... Screen is beautiful in comparison to anything, not just the gtab ... Plus nothing beats having a pure nexus device.

Battery life is great for my use (Google Magazines, Feedly, Graphic novels) and certainly seems comparable to the GTab10.1
Most of the time I can go a couple of days of reasonably heavy use before the battery gets to 30%. Generally I try not to let it go below this
sold my galaxy tab 10.1 the day before yesterday

have barely touched my s4 since getting this tablet

What a great device. And its a shame that some people maybe put off by the some of the pathetic reviews ive read on this device. Its stunning.
My s4 is faster. Higher res screen etc. But when it comes to browsing video etc theres no substitute for real estate.
Please dont listen to these bad reviews written by apple twats. If your in the market for a 10in tablet. You will love this
Lol I know what you mean I got my note 10.1 right after I got my s3 I love it the s pen, main reason I got the note over the n10

Have to totally agree as well. Was about to get the Nexus 10 but I am really happy to get the Note 10.1. And the screen size and quality is more than fine for me...
This is the first time i have really used a tablet for my various hobbies. The Spen magic is great as well.
I just wish we get the Android updates for multiuser feature and bluetooth 4 LE support
i can't live without this tablet, take it everywhere i go i love the note series.
yeah, love it so much, and now, i'm running on ReVolt ROM and love it much more ^^
I completely ignored the reviews about the note 10.1, so many complaints about the screen being poor etc, what a load of tosh that is, there's bugger all wrong with it imo. I picked the note 10.1 over the nexus 10 and I don't regret that decision one bit!

Snagged mine on eBay for £204 about 3 months ago, it's everything I need in a tablet.... I came from the tab 7.7 with the amoled screen which was lovely but still prefer the note 10.1 as more horsepower and bigger screen = happy gingerdude + with my note 2 gives me everything on the go.
To those who say screen is poor, try it for yourself is more than ok.

Couldn't agree more... just got my Note 10.1 a few weeks back - had been debating upgrading my original Tab 10.1 for a N10. I'm so happy I didn't - not sure where most of the bad reviews come from: screen is fantastic, the device is super-responsive, feels great in the hand and well-built, expandable memory (running a 64GB card in my 32GB Note = all the space I could ask for) - and for someone that uses his tablet like a notebook, the pen is fantastic to work with... Highly recommended. :victory:
What would make this Tablet permanently on my person, is if it could Seperate into 2, for portability. The 2nd half of the screen could serve as a giant battery, or the 2 halves could have Bluetooth link to each other, so you could do a lot of new things tablets can't do, for (a light-hearted) example , PORTABLE BATTLESHIP GAME SET! XD lol. Just think how creative Samsung could be, once they make those flexible displays commercially available. Also, when Google Glass becomes reasonably priced (I don't think King Midas could even afford it right now), I think some really awesome usage integration between one's glasses, computer, smartphone, and tablet, is inevitably going to be one of the driving catylsts in how commercially available tech will evolve/unfold.
---------- Post added at 09:20 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:12 PM ----------
About the screen: the only reason Samsung didn't make it on Par with competitors, is because they couldn't find any that could work well with the specialized Wacom digitizer (which is what makes the s-pen superior to a magic wand XD), while also being cost effective. It's a tradeoff that anyone who goes this tablet a fair try, wouldn't care less about. Friggin' Apple extremists think the iPad screen makes photos look better than looking at something in person with your own eyes. Lol.
Opposite for me. I got my S4 and now I use my tablet less. It's not because it's a bad tablet, it's just that it's easier to whip out the phone and browse sometimes. I use my tablet for lots of other important things though so it makes up for that..
i sold my gn10.1 a few months back to get the ativ 500t and 700t. there isn't a day that goes by that i don't miss it. i've almost bit the bullet a few times and gotten a refurb for $300 (i've seen the refurb 32 for ~$350). i really wanna wait to see if they come out with a bigger screen, but i really miss my gn10.1. i missed it so bad that i bought a gn8 to fill the gap that will be left after i sell my nook hd+.
it was the greatest tablet i've owned and thought i'd finally found one that i'd keep for more than a year. windows is great since i can play just about any format and have an alternate selection of games (can't say better b/c that's subjective) and i love the bigger screen. i do hate that windows desktop isn't very finger friendly and that modern ui sucks so badly.
maybe i'll cave it and get another. hopefully i can tame the desire and wait a few months to see how much the ativ q will be or how big the new galaxy note tablets will be.

I just got a Galaxy S4 about a week and a half ago. I find myself using both my Note 10.1 and S4 about equally but for different things, for productivity apps, such as the S-pen apps and office apps, the real estate of the 10.1 can't be beat. for speed, fast browsing and social apps I lean toward the S4. One note though, the S4 just came out with an update that lets you move apps to SDcard, which the 10.1 does not have (hopefully it will come in a future update), however this update locks the bootloaders so that the S4 then cannot be rooted (as of yet!).
Same here. Galaxy Note and S4. In many ways they compliment each other. S-notes automatically show up on S-memo (albeit read only) and reverse also. S4 is always there when Note is not practical. Note wins for meetings. S4 wins waiting for the airplane door to close, and riding in the car.
I even got the small point stylus (ikross brand) designed for the S4 and it works nicely.
In geek heaven here .
