Android contacts data? - Desire HD General

Where do android contacts store data locally? I mean the data of the contacts as vcf or whatever file on the phone.
And are the data in the same place with third party synced contacts like Facebook sync?

I believe that they are stored in the phone's internal memory
Sent from another dimension's communication device.

if you back up your contacts to a "v" card file saved on your pc then you can import/export to your hearts content.
or save em and update via google if you run a gmail account.

Contacts export to pc > edit > Import app?

After a pretty bad experience and almost loosing all my contacts with the basic export contacts feature, I decided to do what I should have done in the first place...
Is there a decent app that allows you to export all contacts (to an excel doc for ex.) after which you could edit them from the PC and import them back on to the phone? Doing this without loosing linked contacts and synced to FB.
Why don't you use Google contacts?
Do you have a Gmail account?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
can you export from phone contacts to google contacts easily or do you have to add them manually to google contacts?
Do you have a Gmail (/Google account). If so plus you connected it to your phone than it's very easy.
Which phone/version of android do you have?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Ofcourse Google itself is the best option.
But there is an app which exports all contact in to once single .vcf file.
Try searching marketplace.

Exporting to .vcf is the method I used without any app installed, using the phone's basic function, but after reimporting back I lost the FB synced contacts and besides opening and editing the .vcf file in excel is not so user friendly

I have an account and I will probably try it also, using android 2.1-update1.
www.google.com/contacts
Yea it worked great with google in 15 minutes or so... wish I thought of that before wasting 2 hrs with other methods
That's fine. You'll see the true benefit of this method soon. ;-)

[Q] Is it better to save contacts to phone or google?

Just wanted to know which was better and why. I have a samsung I9000
Thanks
well if you save to google, and then you get a new android phone your contacts are always there when you login to your google account from your phone. i always save to google
save it on google. If anything happens to your phone, you will not need to worry about losing your contacts. It'll always be there and it's easier to edit contact on Google anyways. This is also helpful if you switch roms a lot. You wont have to copy out your contact and copy it back in everytime.
With applications like Google Sync, I was able to take my contacts and import them into my old Blackberry. When switching to my Android phone the import of contacts was automagical.
Save it to Google, and then export from there into a csv file an additonal backup.
My only issue with saving to Google is you can't assign custom ringtones to non-phone based contacts =/
Anyone know if this is fixed in 2.2?
I've lost my iPhone couple weeks ago and thanks gods all my contacts were in clouds!

What do you want the ringtone for if it's not from a phone?
Another reason to like google vs phone ... It's damn convenient to add a contact on the web page as needed, especially if someone emails you the information and you can just copy&paste it.
I've used Google for mine ever since I bought the G1 when it came out. Come to think of it if I wouldn't have I'd probably not have all of my numbers.
Good stuff.
One question
I synced my contact to my Google account, and since it is syncing, if I accidentally deleted all my contact in the phone, it will probably delete the contact in my Google account too, right?
Or it can restore the backup?

Uh...I think the OP was referring to the difference between the Google contacts and the phone contacts. Meaning that you cannot set ringtones for Google (non-phone) contacts, not contacts without phone numbers.
Although, if there is one thing I really miss from when I initially switched from a Blackberry to the G1, two years ago, was being able to basically setup "filters" for incoming calls, emails and SMS, a customize how each filter was handled.

Depends on the definition of "deleted"...
I don't think it is even possible to accidentally delete all of your contacts. They could be erased by some external means or memory failure, but the sync algorithm does not see that as a delete. A delete is selecting a contact and selecting "delete contact" from the context menu.

Accidentally Delete means someone press delete all on the phone..
The sync will not remove contact from google if you delete from phone. As for ring tone, we'll just need some dev to port stock android contact over. In stock android contact you can set ring tone for individual contact without having the contact on the phone.

Sounds like google is the way to go but how do I get my numbers in "groups" if its linked to google, such as doctors, freinds, family, work? I see that the google ones are a group themselves

You can use backupify, com to backup your google contacts at certain intervals.
That's a nice option to have if you ever accidentally delete your contacts.
If you delete a google contact from your phone it WILL be deleted off of your account. It is a two way sync.

Not directly.
There is no way to sync a phone contact to your Google contacts. You will have to create a separate Google contact.
I think a previous commenter gave the best advice to just use a ROM that has the vanilla android contact app. I think the TWIZ hybrid ROM has the vanilla contacts app.
I have the same complaint. I trying to hold off until there is a vanilla FroYo before using a custom ROM.
Does this mean that none of you are saving your contacts to your sim card?

That's the least advanced way to save a contact because you can only have a name and number, that is all.
I use to save all contacts to sim with my old phones. As soon as I started using my google account I stopped saving to the sim. Mind you I've been with t-mobile for five years with the same sim.

Does it happen via data or WiFi?
Or both?
Did u verify that they didn't sync by going to desktop site to actually see if they didn't actually sync?
Is it all Google accounts, or just certain ones....
contacts, gmail, voice, pictures, books... etc?
Worse case, sign out and resign in to see if helps

From time to time I have problems with contacts not displaying the pictures and/or numbers etc.
I clear the data for the "Contacts Storage" in Apps and then re-sync. Maybe you could try that and see what happens - Just make sure that you can correctly see your contacts in Gmail on your PC or laptop first and they are backed up!

This sync error occurs both for mobile data and Wifi.
And the sync errors only for contacts. Gmail, browser, photos, and calendar successfully synchronized.
I have tried to sign out then sign in again, but not works, still unable to sync for contacts.
Thanks anyway.

maybe your contac database at gmail was corrupted make another gmail account and copy your contacts to the new gmail and try your phone with the new gmail to sync.
I seem to be seeing after looking that I have the same issue. So I did a couple things like signing in and out and that didn't work. I backed up my contacts and deleted my contacts and that didn't work. However I did find something that works.
1. Export your contacts to SD card so you don't lose anything.
2. Go to Settings and find your Google Account and uncheck Contacts to sync.
3. Go to Settings/Apps slide over to all apps.
4. Go down to Contacts. Force stop and clear data.
5. Go to Contact Storage. Force stop and clear data.
6. Go back to your Google Account and recheck Contacts to sync.
At that point you should notice it takes a few seconds longer to sync but when finished showed it completed. If you lose any contacts actually in the Gmail remember you exported your contacts so you still have them.
To export contacts:
Go to Contacts, hit Menu, then click Import/Export and save to SD card.
I recommend exporting contacts on a reasonable basis anyhow uncase anything happens to the phone and/or Gmail so you still have a hard copy on your SD card. You can never be to sure.
I hope this helps and remember to thank me by clicking the thanks.
Edit: I'm also finding if you are running HaxSync that the problem happens more. May be a bug.
Great alternative to HaxSync is Facebook Contact Sync. Link Below:

Another great alternative to HaxSync is Facebook Contact Sync. I will update my above post with the Play Store link.
It happened for me also with Haxsync when I used the upload pics back to Google option. I unselected it, readded the Google account and it was fine again.

I can say without a doubt that HaxSync causes this problem. 3 phones now this has happened with and I can reproduce it.

Have you checked his contacts using the link on Gmail? Google backs up contact changes for 30 days, so he may still have them stored under his contacts in Gmail.
by "usb memory" do you mean you exported/saved the vcf file to a flash drive, micro sd or some other form of external storage? if so, and you connect that storage media to a PC, i'm assuming you cannot locate the file?

you can use the export to .vcf file feature under Import/Export menu in Contacts app. you then can store it internally, email to yourself, save inside sd card etc.

The answer to your problem:
In the Google Play Store is a app called: MyLocalAccount (all one word), d/l and install the app. Go to your phone settings and look under accounts and it should be there as MyLocalAccount. When you save a contact it should ask you for account after you have done the above. Select "MyLocalAccount" when saving all your contacts and it will now be only on your phone and not anywhere in the cloud or google. You can use other programs from the Play Store to move around & delete contacts from any Google account to the MyLocalAccount. Personally I think the MyLocalAccount app is one of the hidden treasures of the Play Store.

First of all open the Apps list from settings and use the right corner dots to "Show System Apps" and from the list select "Google Contacts Sync" and DISABLE the app.
Now open Contacts app and click on the three dots to bring the drop down. From there select Manage Account/Contacts to Display. This will list the accounts that are currently being linked to the Contacts app, what we need to do is disable the Contacts Sync option for each of these apps and that will make each app disappear from the list. The main apps to disable Contacts sync would be email handling ones like Google, Outlook etc. Once you have properly removed all the accounts synced with the Contacts app, then try to Create a new contact. . . the phone will bring up a pop up asking to Add an account or Keep Local. . . .Just select keep local and the jobs done. . . . No more link to Google
