Tablets and USB OTG - Flash drives with micro USB? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

With the rise in popularity of tablets and smartphones, and the microUSB port as the standard for these devices, could we see some flash drives designed for tablets that make use of the microUSB connector?
I'd love to buy a 64GB flash drive that can plug straight into my Nexus 7 and my smartphone and my friends' devices too.
It'll probably be charged at a premium due to the relatively niche usage, but regular 64GB drives are pretty cheap these days, and they're only going to get cheaper.
Has anyone seen or heard of anything like this? A USB OTG adapter isn't so big or expensive but it'd be great to have a storage device that works natively.

Um....a lot of us do this already. Hell, I watched a movie off of a flash drive today. Hyst get stickmount on a rooted N7. I got the micro usb to female usb on ebay for 99 cents shipped.
Maybe I misunderstand the question?

I think he meant flash drives with micro usb in it already as in the mount is micro instead of having an adapter

I did a search and this is all I could find:
http://www.usbfever.com/index_eproduct_view.php?products_id=2704
Not exactly convenient the way it is. They would've been smarter putting the micro USB port on the side, but even then, very pricey.

Definitely a better price, but still inconvenient to have the connector on the end like that. I think that at least for now, it's more convenient to just have a separate cable, not to mention that I don't think I'd trust the reliability of these no-name flash drives in the long run.

Looking for something small to was also hoping to get an otg flash drive best I can find is one of these http://www.usbfever.com/index_eproduct_view.php?products_id=1387 plugged into one of these http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mini-USB...867?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a6edf4fbb. :crying:
Edit anyone interested found these http://adafruit.com/products/939 will take up to 64gb micros sdxc card just placed my order hope to get nexus in a few weeks.

I dream of this
I think what all of us dream of is something like this but just with microUSB connection and preferably with Nexus color and design!

I was looking for it too, didn't know so many people want a micro-sized USB connector Thumb Drive. It's hard to make it myself. I started but it didn't work out that good

I'd like to find one of these, too. Or even find out what ace in post 2 was referencing.

Funny that enough of us think alike that threads like this get going...
Problem is, how do you then connect the otg thumb drove to your pc? There would also have to be a backward adapter. Also a switch to un-short the pins that define it as an OTG device.
That's why the cables are an easier way to go for now. ..

How about this:

Video Out on N1 is Possible ?

It turns out that even with ExtUSB gone, which someone else pointed out prevented video out in the old fashion, HTC has figured out how to incorporate video out.
http://androidandme.com/2010/04/news/droid-incredible-does-tv-out-video/
This article says the Incredible, unlike the Evo 4g, does not use HDMI to do video out. It just uses the regular micro USB port, with composite ends on the other side.
Like the other person said before, thats not exactly 1080i, but it's gonna look fine in my car.
By the way.... THATS what I'ld like to see someone develop. Take the Incredible ROM, go through it, find whatever makes the video out work, and port it over to the N1 roms! Is that even possible?
And please, don't ten people say well don't demand of the devs, learn it yourself... if its impossible, or will take a long time, or whatever, I will wait patiently.
I'd be very surprised seeing as how the usb output on the nexus is very low (2MB/s), unless this is strictly a software stop.

Pretty sure that's impossible. The port is different, so the cable that connects the Incredible to a TV wouldn't fit in an N1.
What kind of TV setup do you have in your car by the way? In the dashboard, or a TV in the backseat?
I think the ports are the same , just software or the cable enable the output ....I hope

they're both microusb ports, should be the same.
but, composite out? bleh. composite can only carry 480i, not even 480p, i don't think. i know it can't handle anything higher than 480 lines of resolution

Good find.
I did a search for HTC ACT100 and found this one as well:
http://www.amazon.com/HTC-Cable-ACT100-Verizon-MyTouch/product-reviews/B0022JHOYM
This one actually has some reviews.
I don't think it will fit.
From wiki:
HTC manufactures Windows Mobile and Android-based Communicators which have a proprietary connector called HTC ExtUSB (Extended USB). ExtUSB combines mini-USB (with which it is backwards-compatible) with audio input as well as audio and video output in an 11-pin connector.

=( That sucks, we only have a micro usb - B, pretty sure they are incompatible with each other.
irrespective, i have an hdtv. most composite video looks like hammered poo on an hdtv
yeah totally different connectors, I still have mine, sucked when i first got my N1 to see what connection it uses.
this seems pretty interesting, unless the icredibles usb port has more connections then i think it could be possible. as far as i can see the only hardware limitation would be the port, i dont think the phone needs special hardware to output analog video does it?
The connectors from the board to the port are different than a standard charge/data connection.

[Q] Does Glacier use standard micro usb?

If the usb port on this phone is a non-standard size I am going to be pissed.
I loved that the mt3g uses a regular mini usb plug because pretty much everyone and their mom has something lying around the house that uses that size. That means that wherever I end up I can always find something to plug into and charge my phone.
I've used camera cables, blackberry chargers, even used my buddy's ps3 controller cable to charge my phone directly from the ps3 or the cable box, lol.
Can anyone enlighten me before I buy something from Ebay that I don't need?

Came across a thread in my googling that indicated there were two styles of micro usb. Also a coworker's phone (Captivate) has an equally small but differently shaped port.
I assumed one of the two ports (mine or hers) had to be non-standard, just didn't know which one.
Thanks for answering my question. So this should work just fine?

Yes, I know the difference. I'm verifying that the mt4g uses a standard micro plug, which it sounds like it does. Cool.
REJOICE!
its standard...
I've been charging mine on an old LG charger I had lying around and keep the supplied micro USB cord with my laptop.
side note: I just ordered some Motorola right angle adapters from Amazon for 4 bucks each... I HATE the location of the USB plug; it makes landscape suck and charging at night is a pain logistically.
Need to get some mini-usb to micro-usb adapters to make use of the rest of my crap.

The SD and USB adapters are the same size. It's two separate units that use the same cap to protect their 30 pin plugs for storage.

Extension Cable for Webtop?

Hey Guys,
I'm kinda afraid that I might break my Webtop's dock or my Atrix while docking/undocking it, plus I would like to keep my phone on the table & not on the dock... So I was wondering if there were Micro-HDMI extension cables, like a:

&
Micro-USB Female to Micro-USB Male Cable
Thanks...
I also, I need these cables
somebody know where I can buy or make these cables ,,please

I cannot find a combo for the usb
I find it really funny that a thread opened up the same day I had this idea, though there haven't been any new posts since I last checked. I would really like to see something like this, it would be much easier than taking out my atrix out of my otterbox case each time I want to use the webtop.
A while ago I read this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1376679
and the part mentioned:
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/hdmi-male-to-micro-hdmi-female-adapter-66079
if coupled with a hdmi female to female piece and the hdmi cable that came with the phone would cover the hdmi part of the proposed extender cable.
I'm having some trouble with finding a good cable with a micro usb female end though
I was thinking... If we took this, ripped it appart and soldered the micro female part to the micro male part on this. Wouldn't it work? Same concept for the micro usb. Plus I looked up mods for the Webdock, and the dock on the back can be taken apart to reveal two separate connectors without ruining anything important...
This guy modded his Webdock to work with the Photon. So I was thinking of just taking it apart like he did in the pictures, and using it like that. Or kinda mod the dock to make it wider so I can use my Atrix with my tpu case...

I actually followed that and started to take apart my webtop. It's really easy to do so, but the cables are pretty well stuck in their slot, even after taking off the metal bracket thing. Besides, I'm to afraid to heavily modify the device, it's a little too fragile for my tastes. I was thinking of extending the cables out to allow me to attach the atrix in the otterbox, but it would be too risky for me, and it would probably be very flimsy. I'm going to continue to look for cables/adapters to suit my need

Using that OTC cable? I'm using CM10 my self, but no usb charging with the OTG cable. I looked a bit on the kernel source and otg does prevent incoming power the the vbus, but not sure if that happens as soon as the otg cable in connected or when a device requiring host is connected.

I got a similar OTG cable from ebay (shipped from Hong Kong) for my P3100. It is also slightly tight compared to the original data /charging cable came along with the device. I think it should not be a problem, unless you need to push it with lot of force. I need to push it little harder than the original cable.
I would say tighter better. I have mine quite loose. And always disconnected

Yesterday bought a USB-OTG adapter cable for my P3100 and it has been working flawlessly.
I tried these
4, 8, 16GB Pendrives
Mouse
Keyboard
Mouse+Keyboard together through splitter
I am quite happy with all the setup right now but has a little worry. The adapter is slightly tight when plugging(pushing) it in then Samsung cable(although I could not find any difference at all between both 30-pin connectors. They are absolutely alike.) Should I worry ? Plz advise !
Thanks

I've had some experiences with Samsung connectors, and -in my opinion- they all fit very tightly when new. They tend to get looser over the time. Just try not to force it in the soket; at the beginning a little care is needed, you will see that by getting used to plug and unplug it when tight and by the natural wear that occurs in the components, the odd sensation of tightness will go away.
