White Line 'flashes' on N7 Screen - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Every now and again, in either game or browsing with Chrome, a white line flashes across the full width of the screen, doesn't happen very often but would you say this is a software or screen issue?
I also have a couple of pixels in the bottom left which I can only assume is dead pixels, but they only are visible when the background is black, so are they dead pixels or stuck pixels? I've tried one of those apps that supposedly fix the stuck pixels but they are still there.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

The flickering SHOULD be fixed in a firmware update. Regarding dead pixels, you should return it.

I'm really curious what this is... it was described well in the general section by markfid like this:
I've also been seeing some issues with the screen, not sure how to explain them but it's like screen taring, that you see in games or like an old CRT monitor when it get's degaussed. It's a line from one side of the screen all the way over to the other side (Held in portrait, from left to right) for a fraction of a second. Very quick but when reading a book on a white background noticeable. At first I thought it was just my eyes getting tired, but it has happened 10 or 15 times so far (with ~5 hours of use).

I've seen that same screen tearing issue! I thought I was crazy because I've only seen it like 4 times, I think always on white screens. It happens really fast and is almost unnoticeable. I'm not sure whether it's a hardware issue or a software issue with the vertical sync in jelly bean

I'm seeing the same thing.. like when you overclock a gpu or like the vsync is off or something. I's gotta last 1/10th of a second, and on irc user "speechles" says he sees it most when scrolling text and the gpu can't keep up.
Anyway, you're not going insane. I see it too.

Thanks, glad to see I'm not the only one... So going by the fact this is affecting a number of devices it might be a hardware issue?
I'm not sure about the pixels, there's probably 4-5 in a line and they go from dark to light from the top to bottom, basically a gradient but like I said they are only visible with a black screen... Might ring Google and see what they say, not sure if it's worth sending back...

I'm pretty sure I have what the OP first described too, but only when music is playing (either through speaker or headphone jack).
I already started the return process, but I'd like to know if this is software or a bad screen. I tried doing a factory reset, but the issue persists.
Maybe there's still hope for a software update.
I wonder if this issue is present in other roms.

I sure hope you're right. Seems like a relatively few amount of people have this line flashing/screen tearing problem compared to the number of people that are just experiencing flickering at low brightness.

Black ink marks

Hey guys I'm sue most if not all our you know about the black ink marks with the SGS III. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to take the phone back and get a new one but now I'm not sure because I hear that almost all the SGS III handsets have them. How many of you have taken yours back and was it worth it?

You can only see them when it's dark. At first I didn't think it would be a big deal but last night I opened my message app and I could clearly see them.
Edit: has to be a black background.

I noticed a couple on mine, but they really are only noticeable in total darkness on a black background. If they get worse I'll consider getting it replaced, but its such a minor issue, it doesn't seem worth the hassle of a replacement.
The screen is amazing compared to my OG Epic.
They are "normal" for amoled screens. Ive had about 12 razr/razr maxx and everyone had it to a certain extent. They never got worse. As long as you dont have the black line running top to bottom you should be fine.

Try using this background turn off the lights and see if you can spot the splotches.

Here's how to test:
1) Download Display Tester, Go to Colors, then Dead Pixel.
2) Swipe the screen to the black color Page.
3) Go into a dark closet and look for anything weird on the screen.
I'm pretty sure that everyone who posted here will not have a perfect screen.
I have a couple but never notice them unless the screen is super dark...not too worried unless I notice them under normal conditions.
Here's an idea; if you have to test for something under extremely particular circumstances and don't notice it otherwise maybe you shouldn't go looking for a reason to make yourself unhappy.
Just a thought.
If you stand on a chair holding the phone at 37 degree angle while watching a specific Nickelback video and get a weird tint...don't do it?

Yeah, I can definitely understand being irritated if you see it during normal use, it just seems like some people (big thread on this in the international section too) go looking for it. Personally unless if actually seen it during my normal usage I'd never go looking for some flaw that I'd then always know was there.
That was what I was getting at, just to clarify.

Screen burn?

I've had my Nexus 4 for about 3 months now, and I'm starting to have a serious issue with image persistence on the screen. As of recently it has gotten very bad, and when I browse Chrome for 5 minutes, and flick the tab away, revealing the brown-grey screen, I can see the URL bar along with the URL address burnt on to the screen. It seems to go away after a while, but actually if I turn the brightness up to maximum and look it is still there. Does anyone else suffer from this same problem?
I haven't yet but I'd say get Screen test set it to the white test setting set your phone to not turn off screen when charging an leave over night that might help clear the screen burn. I haven't had this issue on any of my androids.
Simply; yes. I think that's a bit more widespread issue than one could think.
What I have noticed is it eventually does clear. But it seems to be taking longer and longer to do so. Right now (it has been about 30 minutes) the URL bar and the address has gone, but there is still a white patch where they were. I've read about IPS-LCD image persistence, but most sites say it clears after about two minutes.
zero burn in here, ive have mine for about a month. how bright do you keep your screen?
Yea, for me it's just like 2 - 4 minutes and the burn is gone.
I have auto-brightness on most of the time, typically it ranges from the lowest setting, to about the middle setting. When I'm in the house I turn off auto-brightness. I've just checked again and it is still there, that's almost an hour now. I haven't been using it either, it's been in sleep, but I have been periodically checking it.

Interesting (and no, I haven't seen it on mine).
Yeah I don't see this problem, and I thought this was an issue with AMOLED screens and the like
One thing that annoying me on my nexus 4. You can see on the left of my screen, straight dark line from top to bottom. I haven't drop my nexus before. The problem is though I have had it since the end of December. Would they still accept it? Like I said in the OP though it seems to be getting worse, before the image would at least go away. But now it seems to have retained it permanently.

By perfect do you mean it doesn't retain the image at all, or that it fades relatively quick? I wouldn't mind if it went after like a minute or two, but mine seems to never go away.

Yeah I mentioned that in the OP. The problem is though mine has still not faded. I basically have a permanent Chrome URL box at the top of my screen, with a sort of white mark around it. If I have used chrome recently it becomes fully visible at any brightness. But if I leave it for a few hours it is only fully visible at maximum brightness.

Screen issue or is it just like this?

My Galaxy S4 screen is strange. The top of the phone seems to be lighter than the bottom. As in when im texting the and I turn the phone sideways the blue bar that is there is a lighter blue on the left than it is on the right. This annoys me to no end and I want to know if this is normal or not. I also notice this in a ton of other apps when in landscape and it has a bar. Like Youtube.

Plus in time (not guaranteed) Usually there will be an exploit hack to get root. I'm sure someones working on something. Especially since some were able to keep root after updating
I can replicate the issue you are talking about in the messaging app. About an inch of the screen at the top is slightly darker. But only noticeable on certain colors. I tried all sorts of pictures and other things, I can only see it in the messaging all. The issue is there with all screen modes.
The S II had a very similar issue. There was a triangle of screen that was lighter than the rest, and under certain circumstances you could see black splotches. But both issues were only apparent when you worked hard to see it, but never under "normal" use.
From what I understand having a little inconsistency in AMOLED screens is unavoidable. I would rather have this issue than the washed out colors of an LCD screen, personally. I would wager the issue is probably there on every S4 if you look hard enough, it was on every S II I ever saw.
The only issue I saw that I felt was worth getting a new device was burn in. On the Captivate it happened after about 6 months, the S II about 9 months. I'm hoping that Trend (each phone lasting longer than previous gen until it burns in) continues with the Note, S III, Note II, on to the S4.

This seems to be a common issue. I'm on my third s4.
Phone 1: vertical lines
Phone 2: pink tint at bottom (screen darker at the bottom)
Phone 3: pink tint at top (screen darker at the top)
You can try exchanging it but there's no guarantee you will get a better screen. In fact you may get a worse one.
The qc on these phones seem to be pretty awful.
If the problem isn't too bad I would just keep it and try to get used to it.
The galaxy s2 had an issue where the left side of the screen had a yellow tint compared to the right side. Samsung eventually came out with an update to fix this issue. Hopefully they do the same with this problem.

This has been common with quite a few of the phones I've had. It's more of a yellowish tint at the bottom. I read that its most likely the glue that they use and that it will correct itself with time. I just never waited long enough to see if that was the case and always exchanged them.

Horizontal white lines

Has anyone noticed faint horizontal white lines running across graphic images? I've noticed this most in widgets or picture thumbnails. Tried to take a screenshot but they don't seem to get captured. Very thin lines - like just a pixel or two in width. Sometimes changing screen and coming back makes them disappear. Often if I move the screen by swiping they disappear (even with a very small movement) but then reappear as soon as I let go. Don't think I've noticed on previous smartphones; wasn't sure if this was a byproduct of the 1080p resolution.
Running stock, unrooted.

Hmm... might check on that. Got the phone at Best Buy - not sure how good they are about replacements. Problem is, the issue is kind of fleeting. What I mean is these lines are not static. Even when I see them it looks like there is a touch of flashing going on, and the slightest screen swipe makes them go away. Sometimes they stay gone and sometimes they come right back. I wish I could do a screen capture - maybe I will have to just photo edit some lines to illustrate what I see

and at the time i think HTC was one of the few phones that did the dots still..i remember the moto x didn't have them. i don't even know what the point of them is
I can see them on mine, but only in certain light and at certain angles and when off. I never see them when using it.
Finally got around to taking a picture of this with a separate camera. This is the weirdest issue! I can't capture it with a screenshot. It only happens on some images, and even those sometimes the lines disappear if I rotate the display. I tried doing a factory reset but that didn't help. Doesn't seem to be a hardware issue because I don't see it anywhere else except certain images (probably like 5 - 10% of them). Not app related - I've seen this happen in many apps that have images. This attachment was done in the Play Store app, on an app preview. Also seen it on Feedly, Android Central, Gallery, etc. Can't figure out what is going on!

Did you ever find a solution to this?
I'm seeing the exact same lines after having a broken screen replaced.
me too, on my recently bought ebay G2 (VS980) - i think screen and digitizer are fine. i think it has something to do with the graphic card or rastering memory as it only happens when there is a high computational demand on display apparently? happened with two separate firmwares - one stock and one non-stock - so clearly it is not a software issue (i guess)
I'm pretty sure it's the screen. I had my screen replaced again and the issue is completely solved.

Display warping when scrolling fast?

Anyone else notice if you scroll up and down on any screen, it causes the top and bottom of the screen to warp and get bigger and smaller?
I really notice it when scrolling through cells, try scrolling up and down without lifting your finger really fast on any screen with cells and you'll notice the warping.
Idk if this is a feature or a bug or I'm having a vivid LSD flashback...but I didn't see this happening on the new moto x or the HTC one m8 so I was jw!
I've showed this to a couple different people now and they can see it too. It's kind of disorienting, anyone know a way to turn this off?
I haven't bought my own Droid Turbo but I also noticed this while playing with the phone at Verizon today.
Have you performed the software update?
I'm thinking it might be how the screen refreshes. I'm noticing this as well
can someone post a video ??
Can't reproduce this, please record it
I notice this issue too. Looks like the screen stretches and collaoses at different areas as you scroll vertically. If there is no fix for it i might return my phone makes me almost motion sick

Try setting animation to "off" in all 3 places in Developer tab, I think it helps with image warp.

Turned off all animations and the effect is less obvious but still visible. Bummer.
Turn the phone in landscape
In landscape the phone is unusable because of this issue. I can't believe that they let these out in the wild like this.
Yeah, it's really starting to bother me too. I'm a little OCD though.
So I'm guessing the Nexus 6 will also have this issue as well being they are using the same screen technology (supposedly). Kinda sucks.
So have we figured out if this is an issue with all models or just some models?
I wonder if it's a hardware or software issue. Does it happen in all apps or just some?

Seems like a hardware issue. Possibly the way the screen refreshes.
I really hope I'm wrong though. It's the only thing making me want to return it.
*Edit* I'm wondering if it may happen because the dpi is so high. Maybe with root we could play around with some display settings to see.
So I guess a lot of people just aren't noticing it? Because when I Google around this thread is the only discussion I find.
(I don't own the phone...I was planning on buying it but observed this issue with the display model and decided to wait).
EDIT: You can see the issue briefly here, as he scrolls around in Chrome:

I was hoping it was just a Chrome rendering issue but it seems that's not the case.

That's what I'm thinking as well. It only happens if you scroll at the right speed, not too fast not too slow. I think a lot of people just don't notice it or don't really think about it or care when it happens
I still can't see it, on mine or in the youtube vid.
I noticed this on mine but I figured it was an animation built in to Android when scrolling (like the word bunch/bounce when hitting the end of a page) but that I just hadn't really noticed it before on other phones because the animation wasn't as smooth, screen wasn't as sharp and screen wasn't as big. I don't notice any weird trailing or stretching when watching videos or playing games so not sure that it would be an issue with the display.

That's the main reason I started this thread haha. I googled around and couldn't find any evidence of this being a new animation. They could definitely play it off as a bouncy animation if that wasn't what they were going for. Looks like it might be a bug though...
Yeah, I don't see the warping in the video or on either of the 2 Turbos in my house. The only thing I can see in the video is the weird lines going diagonally across the screen which is pretty much unavoidable when trying to record video of a screen. The only thing I see on my own phones is that it gets a bit blurry if you scroll too fast.

I'm really hoping it's a software fix. After using the phone a couple of days I'm getting killer battery life. I called Motorola and they told me to call back and speak to tear 2 tech support. Maybe they will confirm a software fix can set things straight. I'll let you guys know if I find out anything helpful.
