Some fuel for the fire. Xoom JB soak test starting. - Eee Pad Transformer General

XOOM getting Jelly Bean. Soak test starting:
http://www.droid-life.com/2012/07/15/motorola-xoom-wifi-update-incoming-should-be-jelly-bean/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+DroidLife+%28droid+life%29

Why is this fuel for the fire? people that compare the XOOM getting jelly bean to the tf101 getting jelly bean really have to realize that the xoom was considered a google experience device which means it would be getting the os updates as long as it can handle them.....the tf101 while it does have a good track record is not a google experience device and is up to asus not google

I agree with you100%. I'm just poking the small portion of anti-ASUS people that infect this forum. In reality, this is good news that the XOOM gets JB so quickly. In may force ASUS to reconsider any idea it may have not to upgrade the TF101, especially since the TF101 hasn't even reached EOL yet.

The only reason some people here might be considered "anti-asus" is because of the horrible job Asus has done with the testing and release of ICS for the transformer. I think many of us would welcome being a tester for Asus, if they'd do something along the lines of the soak testing that moto is doing for the Xoom. Asus might have found out earlier about some of the issues that still plague the TF101 for some, and perhaps they'd have been fixed long ago if that were the case.
Just sayin' ... .
As far as the Xoom getting JB, well, that's pretty much to be expected. I'm not sure I care at this point whether or not the TF101 gets JellyBean, but it would be nice to see Asus fix the problems some people are still having as well as get the new features of JB out to the TF101 users. I'm definitely digging JB on my GNex! Of course, by the time this happens, I may no longer have a TF101.

If you want to be a beta tester or need real help, then send a polite email to Gary, with all the information they request, and you might be pleasantly surprised by their response. Of course if you repeatedly attacked him in here, don't bother.
I don't care either way whether ASUS releases their stock JB anyway. JB ROMS are on their way from the devs.
My Nexus 7 arrives today, so my TF101 will be on the back burner for awhile. I have no intention of getting rid of it though. It's running ICS at 1.4GHz flawlessly.

I had a HUGE problem with Gary when I bought my TF201 Prime that had the infamous "Unknown Serial Number" bug, and he proclaimed that a "fix was coming soon". AFAIK, the fix never came other than RMA. I didn't take to trashing him and his company on a daily basis, on a message board.

I've never trashed Gary personally -- my issues with Asus aren't personal and don't require personal attacks. Have I written posts that hopefully convey my level of irritation with Asus over their treatment of the TF101 since ICS was forced upon it? Yep. Got me there, I won't even deny it. My TF101, when totally stock, doesn't run a bunch of stuff that it should. Who's fault is that? Not mine. So, who else is there to blame it on but Asus? If you call posting about my bad experiences with my TF101 (which I have had since launch day, mind you) on a relatively regular basis to be trashing Asus, well then, so be it. Guilty as charged. But the Xoom getting JB soak tests certainly doesn't add any fuel to that fire. It's totally unrelated.
Pretending a problem doesn't exist doesn't make it go away, no matter how deep in the sand you bury your head. All Asus has to do is actually fix what's wrong with the TF101 -- if they do it with JB or another ICS update, I don't care. I'd be happy, and would happily renounce all of the ugly things I have had to say about them in the past 6 months. Til then, though ... not a chance!
I wish the Xoom testers the best of luck -- JB is a nice upgrade from ICS.

Don't worry. I wasn't speaking about you. Sorry if you thought I was. To be honest, I don't even remember seeing you say anything negative about ASUS. There's nothing wrong with posting your feelings and experiences with Asus. I can tell by your post count you couldn't have been too excessive about it. There's a certain other user that has posted over 2,000 messages in the last year, and almost all of them in a thread started by ASUS to help people having issues. I don't have to mention his name. Anyone familiar with this forum knows who he is. I'm sure despite his claims that he has me on ignore, he'll be replying shortly.

In case anyone doesn't pay attention to the development forums, the first JB ROM is available for download. It's a work in progress, but it's a start.

I've never been a fan of CM, but nice to see. :good:

Cm has its quirks, Megatron has been my daily for a while now. Some very nice additions and modifications to cm9 without going as far as Aokp. With Guevors kernel and Megatron I have been very happy (I think quick apps should be integrated into all ROMs from now on)

used to support acer...now?

I just emailed acer to stress to them (as if they care) my upsets. I own an acer netbook that i loved. It was a good product, never caused me any problems that wernt user error. When i saw they had a tablet i didnt even hesitate to buy it. I figured it would be a great product like the experience ive previously had.
When i saw all of the hate threads about the bugs and lack of updates i patiently waited by with faith on acer.
3.2 is around the corner and there is still no "official" 3.1 update for most countries. There are still huge bugs in the open with no official fix. This is my first android device, and im disappointed.
I will most likely be looking for another tablet. One with support from its manufacturer. The support from the community here have been great though, so thank you to everyonewho contributes.
I may hang on to this device a little longer and see what happens but right now im feeling like i made the wrong decision when i bought this.
I dont normally make posts like this but i just felt like saying something.

The 3.1 update is already released in many countries and others will get it in a few weeks. And to be honest, Acer told you that the update will come in late June, early July, so it's pointless to expect it any earlier than that.

This is my first Android device too, and well, I'm actually very happy with it. A few niggles here and there, but those are all Google's doing and they'll exist on all the other Honeycomb tablets, too. One can only hope Google puts some effort into polishing it.
Still, there's no way in hell I'm gonna let go of my tablet.
Unless you can return the device for a refund/exchange I'd say hold onto it until Kal-El is out. That hardware is going to be nice and hopefully Google will have worked on the code side some too.

Kal-El is the Tegra 3 chipset iirc. So not just any one tablet. Although unless Acer changes their bootloader stance I'll go with Asus' the next time around.
Patience is a virtue
wait until 5th july to start be upset.
and you expect what more???
for the price and the quality really!!!! this tablet is far better than some others all things compared... depends what you need.
I bought 2 tablets and 2 phone from ACER the same month. and I am purely satisfied with what I got.
I do not expect perfection at the first release... wait for the A100 or the future Iconia Tablet.... I think that will be something really awesome.
This is not the right attitude to have on xda!
Very few tablets have gotten 3.1 and none of the manufacturers has released it world wide.
Today we got the 3.1 update (unofficial) and the 3.1 kernel.
It is by all means a day of joy and the bootloader barely makes a difference. We got clockwork anyway!

What Bec said -
Had my tablet for two weeks now - used vcache's thread in the dev section to get the most recent OTA upgrade - rooted with modded Gingerbreak - removed bloatware apk's (and backed them up) and spent a couple days learning about the system. Thanks to xda - my tablet is able to pick up on a ad-hoc wi-fi network hotspotted from my cheapo VM Samsung Intercept (25$ USD a month for unlimited 3g - cannot do much better then that) - and I have perfect video playback for watching movies on the go (assuming I take the time to convert those pesky 720/1020 .mkv files to something the a500 can hardware decode).
16 gb internal storage - 32 gb on my microsd - 32 more gb on a USB stick I can plug in - this thing runs like greased lightning! Running the 144.07 official Acer version (as far as I can tell - early releases of 3.1 for this device do not yet support hardware decoding for video - i have been away a few days and this may be outdated).
Again - patience is a virtue. In the meantime - have you made sure you are running the latest OTA version and have you tried rooting your device and trimming away some of the fat? It is literally a 10 min fool proof process - the only thing you need to remember is to keep a safe backup of any system files you remove. Once Acer updates with another OTA version - you simply restore the system files and update. Very simple.

I i think I came off to strong. I don't hate this tablet. The device itself is great, and being a first time android user, I already like it more than ios.
And honeycomb 3.0.1 is not a bad firmware.
My beef is with Acer, maybe I was just expecting to much from them. And maybe they are slow to the gun for good reasons we/I don't know about. I just think as a company who is in direct competition with motorola and Asus they should be more responsive to what's happening around them. But again this is my opinion, and I know you all will have yours,
And I don't have an attitude directed at xda as a couple of you seem to think, xda community has done nothing but provide support and advice when needed. The short time I've been here I've learned a lot from many of you, so thank you. (Excuse my typos, my soft keyboard keeps force closing some reason)

Have you checked out the OTA update thread in the dev section and made sure you are running a updated version? If anything - patching to the latest OTA dramatically improved my browser experience.

Why is Acer slow releasing 3.1? The Toshiba is looking better every day.

What is the deal with Acer? I have not received an update to address any issue since the purchase. This is quite ridiculous. If there is no release to 3.1 before the end of the month as promised (unless leaked versions are considered releases) I think its time to try a different device, maybe the Toshiba. Or HP Touchpad since Google and the manufactures can't seem to deliver a fully operational product. As a matter of fact I'm frustrated with being a lab rat for Google tablets period, the phones are awsome. Well now that i have released some tension the title of this thread should be changed.

Impatience has never served anyone.
The leaked version clearly isn't a final build, going by a few issues with it; especially on devices in the EU. Ever thought that, just maybe, they're having a few issues localising their mods with the updated codebase of Honeycomb?
Besides which, 3.1 isn't as big a change over 3.0.1 as you might think.
Had Acer and Transformer since day 1. Been very patient.

I guess I would rather have the gps, WiFi, and screen wake issues resloved. Everyone knows you under promise and over deliver. So Acer should say " we will relaease 3.1 in mid to late july" and actually have it pushed out 1st week of July. Therefore beating and meeting customers expectations. If Acer has a fix for their issues then release them. I can understand it may take time to address Honeycomb issues but things like the screen, wifi, and gps should have been addressed. Oh and cell standby should really be a priority.

Though the screen-wake issues should be easy to fix, the gps and wifi issues would probably require mW increases to the radios, which may or may not be possible depending on the chips and if they can be updated via user updated firmware (has Acer even shown these issues as future fixes?).
The N900 had an option to increase the mW of the wifi (did not help much), but is the only device I have seen that had the option in user settings.
I had all the common issues (screen-on, weak wifi and gps), so returned the A500 and will wait for an update that at least fixes the screen-on. Was looking at the Thrive, but am hearing mixed reports about the display (some reports are it is washed out and blurry-like). I am hoping these are minority opinions (or the A500 issues get fixed).

If we're talking about looks, the toshiba is one of the uglyest devices I've seen in my life! Such lack of taste and inspiration for design...
Best to get a developer board with 3.1 if you don't care about aesthetics or ergonomics and can't wait for one more week.
Also the screen bug is no bug. It's something you installed. Restore stock and it's gone.
And what wifi issues? Check your settings.
If I were you I'd be more worried about the manual than a minor update.

I for one will wait patiently, or possibly not so patiently(j/k) for Acer to release 3.1. I haven't really had any of the issues with the wifi or the sleep/wake issues at all. My wifi signal is always strong and I think my tablet has rebooted once unexpectedly in the time I've had it. As far as GPS goes, I got an OTA update from Acer about 2 weeks into my ownership that seemed to speed up the GPS fix 100%. Overall I'm very happy with it, but do look forward to resizable widgets.
so take charge
Flash your Iconia with one of the many awesome builds of 3.1 out there and make some changes - or have patience and wait for Acer to do what they do.
Even on 3.0 code base my tablet has been wonderful to me - if it's not working for you then perhaps the a500 is not the device for you.

maybe I will, especially if the the screen wake and cell standby isnt addressed. Just think how much longer the battery would last. I guess what I'm really confused about too is how some people received updates to fix issues, but most didn't? WTF. Updates should be on their website available for download. The tablet is solid and the best as of now, but my gripe is with time it has taken to address issues. Acer is slowly losing traction and needs to improve by showing better support to customers that spent 500 on their device.

as far as I'm concerned, all the issues that sock 3.0 had were completely insignificant. I've been getting great wifi reception, and the cell was so simple to fix it's not even worth complaining about.
If you want a 100% purified experience, go get an iPad. If you want something that you'll be able to do what you want with (including fix issues), stay with the A500.

On the contrary, swearing IS free speech, possibly the best expression of free speech..
After all, WHO gets to define what is swearing anyway.
I've been in some forums and got banned for saying "hell" when some moron said I should say " H - E - double hockey-sticks".
Is 'bloody' swearing (it probably IS in USA bible-belt towns), "bugger", etc.
Swear words come and go (I was told I was showing my age because I said "sod").
No one has the right to define 'swearing' for someone else, hence it becomes free speech to swear!.

Did ASUS cancel ICS on Transformer?

Post ALL ICS related information in the ICS Sticky ONLY ••• THREAD CLOSED ••• moderator
Hi, I saw some post on ASUS UK and ASUS Northamerica Facebook, that ASUS canceled the ICS on the TF101, because of lack of resources with the ongoing ICS problems on tshe prime.
Can somebody confirm this, or is it just a rumor?

Samuel Müller So sad, ASUS stopped ICS development for the TF101. Yesterday I called a ASUS Service Centre in the US, after been switched a few times, I got a service technician on the line. On my ICS questions he told me because the trouble with TF Prime they have no resources left for the Original Transformer TF101.
After the ASUS ICS announcement for the TF101 last October, the release was postponed many times and ASUS Singapore told the customers, that the prime and the TF101 get ICS the same day. Then it was postponed again to mid February and again to February/March. ASUS stopped the ICS adjustments for the TF101 in the middle of January. They where not able to handle both transformer, because of lack of resources then they stopped the ICS port for the TF101 completely. This is also the main reason why there was no official statement and confusion all over. Like · Comment · 2 hours ago ·

Colin Willson I find this hard to believe, but at the same time it must be true. For Asus to not update an 8 month old product is terrible business. Asus has proven they are a horrible company. If this is true they should be ashamed if they don't release what they have done so far. about an hour ago · Like

I don't think "Samuel Müller" speaks on behalf of Asus and neither does a random service tech.
I won't believe any of this until it's confirmed by Asus themselves in an official way.
Also, I find it highly unlikely that they would cancel ICS. It's supposedly almost done and the backlash would be huge.
Just another guy getting his couple of minutes of internet fame. Moving on ...
I don't think Asus is really that stupid (well, I've learned that there really are stupid people.. but still..) to lose customers over a "lack of resources" ? I'm sure they'd lose more resources in not pushing an upgrade which should be somewhere in their cost-benefit analysis. In any case, let's not forget that Apple is a master at marketing, and that this is a perfect opportunity to strike at one of their competitors.. I'm not saying that these guys work for Apple, but if I were in Apple's company, I'd be telling my marketing team to go run negative publicity on Asus (discreetly, because Apple must be seen as above the rest and therefore does not need to market against people) because this is an awesome opportunity.
This **** better not be true. Its not our fault the Prime is a POS.

Asus probably snagged many 1st time Asus customers with the TF101, by having some longer term support for the TF101, it encourages you to try them again in the future when the TF101 is ready for being replaced. Most people own their devices for many years, and are not the gadget obsessed junkies who change device at 6/12 month intervals.
So I am hoping this rumour and speculation is not at all true. Otherwise this is highly likely to be my first and last Asus product.
Come on people I can't believe you guys are falling for this crap. Some joe bloggs posts some crap on the us fb page and you lot take it as fact.
Mods please delete this tosh.
i agree to indie13, dont get panic cause of some posts of some guys.
just wait till next month, then we see what happened with the ics update
I wish they cancel ICS that way I'll sell my TF101 and get a Sammy and never buy a product from ASUS again...
Sony's already blacklisted
just as a little bit of personal experience:
I work in electrical retail and used the retailer numbers to contact Samsung regarding gingerbread for the galaxy tab 7" as it was the same situation for that tablet as it is ours now.
I spoke to a rep and someone from customer care and was told a time frame for the roll out........and to date its still not fully happened or if it ever will. If I.c.s has still not arrived by next Tuesday I will contact them through the same process but keep in mind the gtab scenario.
So the moral of the story is never believe what they tell you.
It's a bullsh#@ , asus south Africa just post a screenshot of t101 running ICS 4.0.3 ,

Good stuff is still worthless if you have no love from the vendor. Mark my words, asus does not care about it's past customers, only seeing them as potential future revenue, that's why the newer, shinier stuff always gets the upgrade, but the older stuff (same general chipset, not that much different), screw those guys, time for them to upgrade. It's the exact same greedy corporate mindset that apple has.
I took a risk buying the Transformer, but now i'm wiser for it. Definately won't be buying ASUS stuff again soon, and my next tablet/phone will probably be a Motorola.

Annoyed by ASUS

My problem is that I bought my TF101 last year around June. After god knows how many updates it was finally solid and fast. No more BSOD's, no more lagging, just a nice solid fast device.
Then ICS dropped. My TF101 now acts basically just like it did back last year when I bought it. Laggy, slow, BSOD/Reboots. Very very disappointing.
So yes I did revert back to the last version of Honeycomb and now my TF is back to awesome working order.
Disappointing that ASUS let ICS out in this form. It is not usable for me given that video performance is so much lower than HC. No idea why really.
I don't know if other Tablet vendors have these types of issues but there is no way in hell I am buying another nvidia based tablet. I notice the Prime owners are about as annoyed as me overall.
Sounds exactly like my situation. I have not investigated switching back to Honeycomb but I have been told I just need use the clockwork app. However when I looked into it 2 weeks ago I got a warning saying it was not approved for my device. Is a special version needed for the TF101?
Or better yet, is there a guide out there for doing this on the TF101?
Its amazing to me how many people were *****ing at Asus for not releasing it fast enough... Saying they'd prefer Asus just release it even if its not ready for prime time yet because the xda developers could fix it. So then Asus does release ICS, with a few bugs, and of course everybody is still *****ing. There is no satisfying people anymore.... If I were Asus I'd almost feel like "why bother?"

If you're rooted, you can use RecoveryInstaller to install CWM recovery.
Don't use the ROM Manger to install CWM Recovery.

Is there a guide?
I mean srsly. You make me sad.
Have you tried the latest update? (One the was released two days ago)
I wiped data after flashing the initial ICS, and now with this update, everything is golden.

I prefer that they released this version - you don't have to install it if it's problems are too much for you. For me it works much better than HC for everything I use the tablet for.

I can't say for sure on their tablets. But Samsung & Sprint sure took their time upgrading my galaxy epic phone!
I was shocked and amazed that Asus patched ICS so soon! A patch like this for SamSprint would have and has taken months instead of meer weeks!
Anyway, just my 2 cents
Right now ics is the bleeding edge. Asus had issues with HC also. Give them 2 or 3 ics releases to get things straightened out. And remember this experience when jelly bean drops this fall.

Because money & corporate image.
If it's that bleeding edge that it's not stable (which, let's admit it - it's NOT stable), then they should not have released it yet! These are not small or un-important bugs - I can't even keep the damn thing running for more than a day at this point!
I'm seriously considering going back to honeycomb at this point - the new ICS additions are nice, but not nice enough to give up stability...

I've found that it's not stable only for people who can't be bothered to learn a few things. All 15 TF's and 1 slider of ours are all solid stable with ICS.

That's what I thought too - it turns out that I just wasn't looking hard enough! It turns out that my tablet WAS rebooting during the middle of the night and I just never noticed it.
At this point, I've done everything possible and the problem still happens. Nothing to do with "learning a few things". Are you even SURE that your units aren't rebooting in the middle of the night? Are you checking uptime every morning?
I've now tried everything - even stock iCS with NO EXTRA apps loaded and the problems still exists (after a FULL wipe). Believe me, I've NEVER had issues like this before - it's NOT something that I am doing wrong -believe me.
I too thought that I didn't have the problem - until I took the time to actually check the uptime every time I turn in on!
My point is that is seems that the vast majority of users are noticing these problems - so if you don't have them then you either aren't looking hard enough or you are extremely lucky - either way, you are in the minority here...
Mine is rock solid with no reboots since ICS came out for it.

Are you sure? How do you know it hasn't rebooted? Have you been checking the uptime every time you use it?
Again, I didn't think I had reboot issue either, until I checked my uptime once and found that it rebooted 10 mins ago and I never noticed. It never reboots while I'm using it - just when it's in standby mode...

Depressing in this forum! ?

I have 2 tf300's and they both have been running just about perfect! I feel horrible about all the negetive experiences I keep reading about. I hope it gets better because its a great tablet.
I'm loving my tablet. It runs very fluid. Way better then I expected. No issues.
Whats the OTA all about? I am so happy with performance I'm scared to update!
Whats new in OTA?

me and alot others went thru way worse than this with the prime. we feel the same way. best advice is don't let others dampen your great experience with device. don't let others try to convince you your tablet is defective like theirs. Reality is there will always be people who cry n complain. alot have valid reasons but some like to go overboard on the pity party. Then you will always have some devices that are going to be defective. That's the nature of the beast here, electronics. just enjoy your device n don't let the negativity get to you.
I happen to love my 300 honestly I think its better than the Acer a510 and the Toshiba excite 10. Apperently the excite has terrible light bleed issues.

Well its nice to see a few people being positive. I was going to wait for the tf700 to come out but it was too hard to resist for the price. I had the a500 and I felt jealous of my son with the tf101 with keyboard dock. Plus I had both tf300's rooted and build props updated in 45 minutes. I wish my phones were so easy.
No regrets at all. I am ticked that my sons tf101 got an update today with face unlock and we don't have it. Lol. I love it on my HTC Resound.
PS. Its nice to see the quick updates with Asus. 2 updates on the tf101 in a months time is pretty cool in the android world!
I'm pretty happy with mine, thus far. I had to return the first TF300 I got because it had a flaky touchscreen, but the second one's been working well. The only problem I've noticed is that the sound occasionally gets scratchy. At first I though it was a software issue, but now I'm leaning to it being due to a contact shorting when you squeeze the screen, because I've heard it making that scratchy sound when I do that.
All in all, though, I really like this thing. I can't ever see myself being satisfied with an old-school laptop after this. Having the choice of using it as a laptop or removing the screen and using it as a tablet is just wonderful.
Agreed. While not without a few quirks, the overall experience has been fantastic!

That's really pathetic, according to some suggestions here, we are suppose not only to enjoy but to keep a positive attitude towards our half-baked product. In a few words and based on the suggestions here we need to learn to deal with it and be patient waiting for Asus that eventually will get those issues fixed with a new firmware release.
If the tf300t were a $99 product I wouldn't mind, but I paid $399+$150(dock) for the fist tf101(RMA 3 times), $499+$150 for the tf201 preorder and now $400+$150 for tf300t.
I love ICS, and I love my tf300t as well and will keep it anyway to try new ROMs when they become available, but definitely will get a different brand next time(w/ different SoC, snapdragon or exynos), not Asus anymore.
My question to you would be.. would you tolerate a $550 laptop if it had half of the issues tf300t has.
Other than that I find it really hard to believe some of you have a 100% perfect unit.

Doing great on my end. My 3rd Android device. Use to the quirks of the software now. Much more patient these days than I was 2 years ago. Very happy as far as the hardware goes.
Really have to take forums for electronics with a grain of salt. People get disgruntled, hyperbolic, and very fanboyish.
I just like to vent once in a while
I have several of these.
All of them I got just over a week ago, and I have vented in the forums regarding the size limitations with the internal storage, and not being able to route or install new apps to the SD cards. I really do think this was stupid on the part of the manufacturer to put such a limitation in the devices.
However" even though I vent a little bit, I also have perseverance that most do not. Give up really isn't built into my fabric. With that said I like these systems a lot, and I will go through some hoops to get them to where I want them.
So far I'm very happy with these, and my son absolutely loves his. A little too much in fact, at the point where he is on a break from the tablet for the next week or so until all his MCAS and finals are done for the year, hehe.
I think most people like these that have them - people just get frustrated when they have to deal with some of the standard Android issues like Rooting, and storage.
Performance wise the TF300T is a excellent little piece of equipment.
If Asus made them come with Root right off the bat, and removed the storage limitation issue with the SD card so you didn't have to implement a work around for it. I would push for my company to get these.
Currently my company hands out the iPads and Motorola Zooms to every one so we can develop apps for both markets.
I feel the Asus is a far better product aside from the Root and SD card issue.
The SD card issue is a deal breaker on the company wide side of things though.
All and all, I like mine
nordis,
I love my tf300. No issues at all.

You've got two options:
1) enjoy it for what it is
2) return it
I'll probably hang on to mine. Fact is, for all the QC issues that have arisen with this tablet, there's nothing else like it in the market today.
Yeah, if there were four or five other Tegra 3 tablet/netbook hybrid devices out there I might take mine back for the speaker issue and the display issue that's reared its head a couple of times since I've had it. But there aren't. And I'd rather enjoy this thing for the 98% of it that works the way it is supposed to than rant and rail and raise my blood pressure over the 2% that doesn't. You might not. And if you don't, then take it back. No sense in getting all worked up over a product that you can take back to the store for a refund.
I got mine today. Firmware updated and factory reset but seems slower now
