Compare GN vs SGS3 - Fascinate General

I know many of your are torn between these 2 devices, especially now because of Verizion's instance on making your android experience miserable. This is a quick compare of the 2 devices since I've had both in my possession about 5 days now.
If you're too impatient to read the whole thing The short version is the S# is awesome but get a Nexus.
Build Quality- Winner Nexus
Feels much more solid and the S3 although sleek and smooth feels like it would break or scratch easily. The GN feels like it would be fine in your pocket unprotected and not get damaged by keys or loose change.
Screen - Winner S3
I'm giving this one to the S3. If you didn't have them next to each other you may not notice, but the S3 screen is a bit larger, brighter, and crisper. However the S3 has no bezel to protect the screen what so ever the screens glass blends right into the backing. This feels sexy but I think will be prone to scratching. The nav buttons on the GN are convenient and auto hide when watching movies and playing some games.
Radio - Winner S3
I posted the test results on my twitter but if you haven't seen it the S3 gets better receptions and faster DL speeds almost everywhere I test them together. This may be because I'm running a ported version of JB from the GSM models. Once I flash the new radios I may update this
Cpu - Winner S3
This is actually tough. Im running 1808 mhz on the GN right now and it flies. However, dues to the fact that the S3 will get custom kernels in the near future I see them taking full advantage of this monster processor.
Ram - Winner S3
695 useable on the GN, 1.62 on the S3… obvious.
Camara - Winner S3
The new jelly bean features are cool but the S3 will get those very soon.
Battery - Winner S3
This could be due to the heavy OCing on the GN, but the S3 makes it all day with plenty of usage by my wife.
Software - Nexus
Will continue getting the latest android and fully functional rome since everything we need comes from Google. After the devs tackle the boot loader issue they still have the 4g ril in front of them. Functional AOSP for the S3 is a long time coming.
Longevity - Nexus
Verizon is only obligated to update the S3 for 18 months I would doubt seeing updates after that. The nexus S is getting official JB… I believe the GN will get the K desert and maybe the L also.
Price
Nexus you can pick them up used in very good condition around 300 this will keep your unlimited data as well since you won't use and upgrade.
Overall experience - Nexus
Its the little things that add but but the fact that I have already bricked my GN 5 times (my fault, getting greedy) and haven't had to make a trip to Odin is amazing. EVERYTHING works on the nexus. Its just everything you could want in a device as an android enthusiast / flash junkie.
Ask any questions you may have about either device and I'll answer them for you guys to help make your decision easier.

tl;dr the gs3 has great specs but the nexus is better for the type of stuff we like to do.

Thanks! Amazon has some negative reviews around the radio of the GN. Did you notice any red flags in that area when testing?

First attempt in the walmart parking lot by my house....

I'm getting my GS3 today before 3pm (it's on fedex truck for delivery). It's gonna be hard to replace my perfectly working AOKP Fascinate with unrooted TW After reading xda threads about GS3 root it seems that people have lot of problems with rooted stock image. If nothing changes in next couple of days I think I will sell it and buy gnex instead (too late to replace it with verizon without loosing unlimited data). Anyway thanks Stephen for your great work on fascinate and I will be still following you cause my aokp fascinate is going to my wife
ps. is there anyway to transfer my apps with data from fascinate to gs3 without root on the gs3?

I received my GNexus today and I'm pretty satisfied, it's hard to deny it's perfect for somone who loves to fool around with the nerdy part of android. I compared it with my sisters new GS3 and I'm confident I made the right purchase, no regrets here!

Which rooted/debloated room are you running? Is there more than one?
I get my gs3 in a couple days.

steve are you gonna make your own rom for the sgs3 or you gonna join aokp again?

Working on getting Toro building and compiling in the new AOKP-JB repo I would expect to see tests in the next few days for Toro. It will be short many many mods since we are starting from scratch. Once that is booting and working right I'm looking at the Fascinate. That is if JT doesnt beat me to it. IF all that is done I'll see where the SGS3 is but I think my attention will be focused on Toro and Fascinate until the bootloader situation is resolved.

Did anyone see the announcement that Samsung will be selling an unlocked version of the Verizon GS3? It's called the Developer Edition and you have to buy it directly from Samsung for $599. It won't be available thru Verizon.

Standby I know a few of us are already working on it seeing what can be done
I was fooling around with one today at Sprint store. It's sloooow compared to the hybrid Frog in the latest Bonsai beta rom. Maybe once it gets fixed it will work better.

Yeah, my wife picked one up today. Its a nice phone but at the moment I still like my (rooted) Epic better. However once development for it gets rolling I'm sure it will be a whole different story. Stock for stock the Nexus is leaps ahead though.

Same here mine wasn't updated right when I unboxed but I didn't take note of the info before the update. Yeah hotspot works wo the plan on the s. The update said there is an important update to fix system performance on your device but didn't note any change at all of the build number like the ones for the Epic did in the past.

Can someone tell me what the key differences are between he nexus s and the epic that wouldb possibly make the nexus better or an "upgrade" ? I was in a sprint stoe Saturday and the mployee told me I'm eligible for an upgrade before june 30th an then again starting october 1st. Is the nexus more advanced enough to ditch the epic or should I wait for somthing like the evo 3d , galaxy s2 , or whatever comes out after those?

Personally I don't feel its worth upgrading to.
It is pure google and will be updated by google
Has a NFC Chip
Has a curved display
Has no keyboard (negative for me not for others)

no, i wouldnt. the fact that its pure google will make the updates roll out way quicker. and the screen is 4.0 inches. the processor is the same, but it comes preloaded with gingerbread.
the way i see it, i like my screen just the way it is. super amoled isnt that much diff from super amoled plus. the curved glass is just a gimmick. and it doesnt need to be that huge. plus i like the keyboard on our phones. ive had an all touch phone before and it drives me nuts.
i guess its just a matter of opinion. im sticking with the epic tho.

No, I totally understand. I appreciate all the work that you guys do. I was just wondering if anyone knows what Epic users have to look forward to at this point. I know once the devs start tearing it apart it will probably reveal even more possibilities but at this moment I am just looking for any information that I can get my eyes on of what's down the road for us. Will this give us a chance at having a pure AOSP thats not CM7?

[Q] Thinking about getting an EPIC, can people help with a bit info on it?

I see the last thread with questions like this was from March, so I just wanted to get the latest about the EPIC...
Are there GPS, wifi, or keyboard issues or these are fixed by one or multiple ROMS available?
Are many devs still working on this device or had it been somewhat abandoned?
is CM7 pretty good without major bugs ?
will the battery last a full day with most ROMs with regular use (i.e. checking email, some web browing, maybe an hour of music streaming, etc)
Netflix works on some ROMs, right?
I have a Hero with CM7 and I like, but amazon still has (and BB just ended yesterday) free EPIC for upgrades, so thinking about getting one. I would get the EVO, but it's still $150 almost anywhere and at that price I would rather pay $200 for the E3D...but from $0 to $200 there's still a big difference
Thanks in advance

1. No problems with those in almost any ROM.
2. Devs are still around and work is still being done.
3. CM7 is still in Alpha 4 but its being worked on by TeamHacksung.
4. Cant really answer about batter since there are more factors than the ones you mentioned like signal quality in your area. Battery has gotten better though.
5. Yes, Netflix works on some ROMs.
Side note: Hero development was and still is pretty big compared to the Epic, dont expect the same amount of development for it.

Thanks for the answer, but wow, Hero has more development than the Epic? I wouldn't have expected that. I was going to get the Epic from BB yesterday, but the one I went to sold out and the next one only had two and I ran out of time, so I either get it from Amazon or wait for another sale
The Epic is a very awesome device and is adequte for your your eveyday uses on top of mods. The Epic has tons of ROMs, themes, and other customization tools that have been worked on the past few months which made many of them "bug free". The full QWERTY keyboard comes in hand which really makes this device "EPIC".
If you are a real hard core developer and wouldn't mind living without the keyboard then I would recommend the Nexus which is very simular but with monster hardware, like the dual core processor for increased speed and performance. The down fall to these new devices is that there has not been as much development put into them yet, so customization is not as optional compared to the "Epic". The epic is an advance telecommunicational device not a cell phone but unfortunately there are more cell phone users on the sprint network that don't understand the power of the Epic. I hope this clearifies your decision. I hope that you decied to live the "Epic Life".

Nexus S has dual core? Since when?
Also, Hero has more development since it was one of the first Android phones for Sprint, it was one of the nicest ones for its time and it was an HTC phone. Samsung tends to keep away developers. After the Evo came out, a few devs jumped ship to that but there were too many devs to let the phone die. Hell, look at Deca, I was so happy when he said he got an Epic knowing all the stuff he did for the Hero, I still cant wait what he can do for the Epic.

Now that I'm rooted and on syndicate frozen 1.1.1 its like having a brand new phone again. my opinion is get it you can't go wrong with it the slide out keyboard is great for games but with swype I almost never use it. The keyboard was a big factor for me in choosing the Epic over the Evo. I still think I made the right choice, but I *never* use the keyboard. It's just too easy to type with swype. Whenever I ultimately decide to upgrade, it will be to a phone with no keyboard.

If you root it, its a good phone.
GPS Aids is a must, GPS is golden now.
4G only works outside...
The Viper Rom is the best, just use Root Uninstaller to delete the teams bloatware.
Dont overclock (only fun for benches), its not worth the battery lose/glitches.. Just use setcpu to change the governor to Performance.. Alot of games play good with Performance gov. and clocks set to as low as 400 mhz.
Only complaint: No gyro. Dont give me any lines about this! I wanna play Nova with a gyro not a touch screen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I WILL MOVE OVER TO IPHONE JUST FOR THe GYRO, if still no phones/apps on android support it in Nov.
the keyboard is great for using Terminal Em. or punching in passwords. But ya it might not be worth the bulk..

I must be confused about what you mean by Gyro
I play quite a few games that operate via tilting the phone only, rather than the touch screen

LOVE!!!!!!

So...I've had my Nexus S 4G for 2 weeks now, and I have to say, the first few days I was having trouble justifying the off contract price of the phone, especially when my Epic was perfectly fine.....
Fast forward to the first week, I was really liking how well it fit in my pocket, not to mention the battery life stock, and the GPS lock in seconds...awesome.
I also decided to root and try CM7, and I've been running it for a week so far, and I'll say it's changed my mind, and I'm definitely keeping this phone now!
And the ONLY thing I missed from my epic was the camera button, and today fooling around with my Nexus, I found that in CM7 you can assign the volume buttons to take pictures, EFFIN AWESOME!
So, I'm in love!
That is all,
Chris

That is all,
Chris

So did the Sprint employees look at you funny when you bought it off contract for full retail?
I've always wondered what they think when enthusiasts come in and lay down half a grand on a phone... It's an expensive hobby.
I also came from the Epic... it's hard to tell they have the same hardware inside.
I don't see myself ever buying a non nexus device again..(here is hoping Sprint continues to play a role in the Nexus devices!!) Android is at it's best when it's running as Google intended. Not to mention the updates and development..
Anyways. Welcome glad you like it.

I have bought 3 phones off contract now and it is expensive hobbie but then again smoking is expensive too ( I used to smoke a pack a day/ the was like 150$ at month ) so I don't regret it

The sprint stores always seemed surprised. Best buy and the T-Mobile stores never blinked an eye. I've purchased 6 phones at full retail and only got an odd response once (from a Sprint employee).
Having gone from the Nexus One to this phone (and I'll buy the next Nexus phone as well) I hope it comes to Sprint. Otherwise I'll have to jump carriers again.

Jellybean is 4.1

http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/21/android-jelly-bean-4.1-google-wallet/
So basically it probably won't be a huge improvement over ICS like it was from GB to ICS.
Well that was to be expected.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using XDA
Google does it agian much bigger improvment then IOS 6 from 5
sure it is
the benefit to 4.1 is project butter. No more lag and 60fps.
Looks nice. A themed ics
Big question is when will we see a 4.1 rom for vibrant?

man, i'm sure we will see it! It doesn't seem too different from ICS, but MP noted to me earlier today that even if we DO get 4.1, PROJECT BUTTER might not be compatible, and thats pretty much the BIG thing in 4.1, so it might not be as big as we plan.
Aw! That's what I was afraid of. Our vibrant might not have the guts for project butter. God dammit that would suck. Next nexus devices should be coming this fall right? If they price it to compete like they have tablet has been. I'll pick one of those babies up.
Well, Project Butter is just kernel changes etc, isn't it? Doesn't seem like it would be a hardware limitation unless it needed drivers or something
SG Nexus already have it.
We'll have it by next week. :good:

Yeah I was disappointed with the galaxy s3 so I'm holding out for one of the rumored Nexus devices this fall as well. Hopefully they'll have the option to allow upgrades so we don't have to buy an unlocked version for $599.

Apparently, according to rumors, there is supposed to be FIVE Nexus devices this year. I hope it is from all different manufacturers. Samsung,HTC,LG,Asus, and hopefully Nokia but that is unlikely.
Also, read up here, http://phandroid.com/2012/06/28/no-profit-in-nexus-7-pricing-says-rubin/
The reason the price is so LOW is because Google wants a clear pathway into the tablet market with this Nexus 7. A tegra 3 device at 200$? That, no one is daring to do but Google. They took no profits from the device, but I'm sure they will get something out of it since
1) market share increases
2) their own company value increases
3) if anyone uses the internet on any device, you can be sure as hell to see a google ad somewhere haha

I am so done with Samsung. I should have known that after the Samsung Epic, that their software updates are unbelievably/unexcusably slow. I took a chance with the 10.1 and got burned again.
I am done with you Samsung, I really am.

Lol so tell me.. Your moving to htc? Or LG? Or what ^_^? Samsung has IMHO the best high end device /support /development in android's world.. I've tried almost every brand out there and I'm very satisfied with Samsung products...
Got a gnex, gtab and recently bought a gnote...
If you want faster updates you should get Google nexus devices... I got jelly bean in my 8 months old gnex the next second Google released the preview after I/O for Google play devices..

I honestly don't know what I will move to. From what I understand, all Motorola devices lock their bootloader, so that is out.
I don't know. Samsung has AWESOME hardware which is why I love them so much, but their software support leaves a LOT to be desired.

well you have an android device.. it's open source... meaning communities like xda has great developers... you only need to read a bit (5–10 mins) to be able to root and flash cwm recovery into your device Wich btw its hell easy in most samsung devices... then you are ready to flash any custom roms out there... And you can ask anyone devs here in xda are wayyy more talented than manufacturer's... meaning custom roms performs wayyy better than stock roms... and you will be updated as soon as any change in aosp code happens go ahead and void your warranty xD.. there's always methods to go back to stock
cheers

Trust me when I tell you, I know. I am running ICS on my Samsung Epic device, which only supports GB. LOL.
No matter how good our developers are, they still need Samsung to do their part. FOR EXAMPLE... Take a picture with your 10.1 using ANY ICS ROM that our developers have put together. Plus, to be completely honest, we shouldn't have to count on our NON-PAID, VOLUNTEER devs to make the software everything that it SHOULD HAVE BEEN when released from Samsuck.

I am in the same boat as you. I should of learned with the Captivate how they do things in regards to updates but I didnt. The only way I will still buy a Samsung product is if they are making the next nexus phone or tablet. That way factory images will be provided and then I can just flash the updates myself and not have to wait for them to update it for me.

I was going to post a link, but it looks like you beat me to it, thanks!
This port is pretty buggy, but overall its SO smooth. I haven't had a single lag/shutter. Only draw-backs are no wifi and audio (I don't even need to mention the camera...)
The port is pretty awesome, and I'm expecting something great to come of this, making our tabs better, faster, and way more productive.
Hi men.
I have a GT-p7500 and am ready to test every safe rom/os on it.if you have info that I'm not informed of pm me!
But this preeeee-alpha version isn't worth.
Ps:I'll test it though!!!!!!

New build is up and this can and I do use daily no bugs to speak of. Apart camera 3G etc. This ROM is buttery smooth and is very fluid and has hadn't a wow factor to my tab and you wouldn't go back to hc nor ICS. Try this ROM :good:
