AT&T insurance worth it? - Galaxy S III General (US Carriers)

Do you guys think the $7 a month fee is worth it? I get a corporate discount, so for me it would only be about $5.

I just got a good case.. and if I remember right there is a high deductible on the insurance anyways..
But yeah I plan on getting the kraken case to protect my phone once it gets out. ATM I have a cheap protective case from ebay.

$7 a month + $200 deductible.
I think I'm going with Ensquared insurance

Its not. Don't get AT&T, but get SquareTrade (google it).

I have a case and a screen protector. I think insurance is better for lost/stolen situations, and squaretrade does not cover that. Anyone else?

When I priced SquareTrade out, a 2 year warranty came out to $5.20/mo. Not much cheaper than the $7/mo (which includes loss) from the carrier. If you get a corporate discount down to $5, then SquareTrade is more expensive.

Hmm... Where I work our square trade is 99. Which over the course of 20 months is ~5/mo. But either way its arguing over change.
The big difference is squaretrade is a 49 deductible and overnight replacement.

Well, I guess it's nice you can get deals… but for the rest of us…
squaretrade.com/android lists 2 years for $125 ($5.21/mo). Deductible is $99. Last time I went with carrier insurance, my policy mentioned 2-day replacement in the policy but they did overnight. Of course, they replaced my broken phone with a device I didn't like/want, so YMMV…

they did the same thing to me. It's really $7 and $3 for some advanced tech support crap. I logged I online and removed the $3 feature but kept insurance.

Zagg.com does insurance for $99 for 2 years of coverage. It's either $49 or $59 deductible I can't remember. I also think that it does not cover loss/stolen.

Just a quick FYI, corporate discounts do not apply to the insurance.
And yes, insurance alone is normally $7 but there's also a $3 add on that gives you mobile locate, and enhanced support.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

its best to get the insurance through Best Buy Mobile if you havn't bought it yet, im sure you have but maybe for next time
$10 a month no deductible
only thing is you have to have the phone to get a new one doesnt work if lost/stolen

The test
Don't bother with insurance unless you can answer YES to any of the following questions:
[ ] Are you a klutz?
[ ] Are you "rich"?
[ ] Do you feel unlucky, punk, well do ya?
[ ] Do you not have a backup phone?
[ ] Do you live an "active lifestyle"?
[ ] Do you not believe in using "protection" (cases)?
[ ] Have you ever lost a phone before or dropped it in the toilet?
[ ] Do you have a toddler?
I can only answer yes to the last question, but I'm still not bothering with insurance.

All above......
Lol

Lol.

That said, I will probably be dropping the TEP on my two older phones (Moment & EVO), as they can now be replaced cheaply, but the Epics still cost enough to replace to be worth it, IMO.
I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes $11 across the board for any smart phone. Kinda like they did with the $10 "premium data fee" which was originally for only charged for Wimax 4G phones.

Yep. I don't bother with overpriced TEP. If the thing is defective, that's what the warranty is for. Used handsets on Craigslist and staggered upgrades on my three lines is my "insurance policy" if something happens beyond that.
$11 a month is ridiculous for a device that you only paid 200-300 bucks for. You are essentially paying for the thing more than twice over the length of your contract. Then throw in the deductible on top of it, jeez.
This is for new upcoming devices. ATT deductible is $200 for The Note yet $50 for the Pantech Burst. It will become phone dependent.

When the Epic was released people paid $200. That doesn't mean that's the price of the phone. Retail was $549.99 at that time. Add in taxes it's close to $600. Even $11 over 22-24 months is only 242-264 dollars. Even if you factor in having lost or damaged the phone in a way that warrants the deductable, your still under the retail cost. Sprint doesn't care what phones are going for on Craigslist. That's personal seller value of used phones. If you didn't take the TEP, had a problem that isn't covered under your manufacturer warrantly, or had the phone lost or stolen, and came into a store to buy a replacement new in box, you'd be paying retail. Roughly twice what you'd pay with the TEP and a deductable.
Sprint isn't screwing anyone. They just don't have the best deal around if your able to find a working replacement cheap on CL or Ebay, which isn't always a gaurantee, but can be the norm.
Sprint TEP is still a great value for flagship devices. Anything new is gonna hold it's retail value for awhile. Once that value starts to drop though, there are other options, that may or may not be cheaper in the long run, but may also turn out less reliable.
I for one don't wanna chance personal sales for anything considered a high end device if I need a replacement for my main phone. I'd rather have a professionally refurbished device so I'm gauranteed the quality of the product I'm getting, as if the replacement has an issue through TEP they will immediately replace it again, as long as the issue is legit.

Insurance on electronics is pure profit for retailers. If you figure what you pay over a ten year span on extended warranties you'd have enough money to replace the phone with money to boot. If you want tep go for it but it's a sucker bet.

Its not even close for me.
3 phones had to be replaced, and was done for free
2 phones replaced via TEP w/ $100 deductible
To replace those phones out of pocket instead of TEP would have been 4 x $150 for the moments and over $400+ for the Epic, for total of $1000
The phones broke when they were still rather expensive to replace, so, no TEP would have cost me over $1000 (and that is for second hand craig's list or ebay devices, not even factory refurbs) in the last 3 years
With TEP, I paid out $200 + (2 x $8 x 36) or = $576 for a total of $776, a $224 dollar savings plus the benefit of TEP, and the benefit of 4 new phones
Totally worth it, IMO.
If your phones is a cheap model, less than $200 without subsidy, then no, TEP, is a waste, but when your phone is $500-$700 to replace, TEP is a must have extra.

Insurance for the Nexus 4?

Just thinking, I'm not too worried about defects, Google will replace it for that. But reading about the nexus 4s slickness, and people dropping them makes me realize stuff happens. This is why I have insurance on my at&t account, but obviously that isn't going to mean much with a non at&t phone. Any third party companies that offer it?

I think it's crap that I can't just pay $30 from square trade for a service plan with accidental coverage. Oh it's a phone. That means you need insurance and not a service plan. Who decides this crap? I got a service plan from square trade when I bought my HTC Flyer and it was $30, and what is a flyer? An oversized Desire HD!
I remember you used to be able to buy a service plan from best buy for a phone if you bought it from them, and now they have bend over and spread em insurance too! Really who decides this crap? Cell phones are pretty much in a class of their own with consumer electronics.

i think i am going to get squaretrade before my 30 days are up. one of the things i like is you can cancel at any time and be refunded the rest of your money. or cancel and stop paying your seven bucks a month. you can also transfer it with the phone if you sell it and want to use the insurance as a perk.
has anyone else found anything better?
i just noted in a previous post that my phone just dropped 18" onto a rug with the bumper on and now my glass creaks. its only a matter of time i feel before something worse happens. and who knows... maybe google and lg will start building these things a bit better and with insurance we can swap it out.
I just think it's crap I can get a square trade warranty on a tablet for $30 that doesn't have a monthly fee and offers the exact same coverage but because the device is deemed small enough to be a phone I gotta pay a monthly fee

i completely agree. i wish some hardware replacements would start hitting the market. if i could price out the replacement parts i could weight out the pricing better. but i dont want to go past my 30 days and be forced into buying the parts from the internet when they could very well be pricier.
Check the threads were people have sent their phones back for repair. I'd rather save my money then send it back to LG for repair, if there is something that needs repair. One post I read said it was going to cost $140 to repair the cracked glass. Another one was $153. So paying someone $125 for 2 years and $99 deductible seems like its not worth it. The cost for a one time repair would have to exceed $224 to make it worth it.
This is what I got. Square trade $79.99 for 2 years and a $50 deductible.

I agree. Paying $125 on the chance that I break it and then have to pay another $99, for a total of $224, on a phone I bought for $300, doesn't seem quite worth it.
Of course, that's if it only breaks once. My wife is murder on phones, so figure that she breaks hers, say, three times in two years and that's $125 + $99 x 3 = $422. But then, if LG will repair it for about $150, then those three times only cost me $450, so the difference is still pretty negligible.
I'm going to get us both the Ballistic cases when they are released in a few weeks and hope for the best.

I got Square Trade. They are having a 35% off sale until December 26th.
Transmission sent from my badass Nexus 4.
I've had mixed experiences with Squaretrade. My biggest complaint is that they send your device to a repair depot that can take over a week to fix. In addition, if the repairs exceed the cost of the phone, they keep it.
Also, the last time I used them, they wanted my SIM card (I was having SIM identification problems). I personally refuse to send an active SIM card through the mail. They said that all of their customers are fine with it?
Anyways, I personally don't think it's cost effective to buy insurance for a cell phone at $299-$349. Just keep money aside if it breaks or is lost/stolen.
I'd like to know if any one has used these guys.
http://www.worthavegroup.com/cell-phone-insurance
on paper it seems like a good deal and good coverage... but I'd like to hear some stories about claims being a hassle or not.
I'm content with using SquareTrade as an "Insurance" for my Nexus 4.
SquareTrade: $125+$99=$224 (They even cover shipping)
Buying New Replacement: $349+Shipping
Plus with buying new, you have to take into consideration that the Nexus 4 is nearly impossible to get right now.
So you could be stuck without a phone for months, where with SquareTrade you get one quickly.
And "Part Replacement" is pointless IMO. You might crack the screen, spend $150 for a new screen. But what if you do more damage than just the screen.. more parts to buy
But that's just me. Plus if the phone is not repairable. They give you the full retail cost of the phone at time of purchase.
$79 Plan from SquareTrade the Indian guy from the SquareTrade Customer Service said the Nexus 4 is covered under this plan.
Or $99 Plan from SquareTrade will cover it too, (in case you don't want to take the chance that the $79 plan does not cover it.)

Handset Insurance

Seeing as how I, (like many others on here) plan on purchasing/have purchased the VZW GN3 for full retail, how many are considering purchasing insurance for the handset? If so, SquareTrade, VZW $8/month, covered under a home insurance clause, etc. What will you be using and how much are you paying? I'd like the peace of mind knowing that incidental damage/theft/water damage will be fully covered and though I'll have a screen protector, I'll likely use it naked as I like its body lines and don't want to add ANY bulk to an already hefty sized phone.
Any input is highly suggested and welcomed! Thanks guys!

#1: SquareTrade - Yearly fee and no deductible?
#2: Asurion - I was told by a rep this morning when I picked up my SGN3 was $10/month (they raised it from $8/month) and a $100 deductible.
VZW has 3 Asurion options - $5.18, $8 & $10
My wife has the $5.18 for her Droid DNA
I have the $8 for my SGN3 - still not completely sure of the difference.

Thanks, that's cheaper than paying $8.99 per month.

Yes it is. I've never had to use the warranty for repairs, but it's definitely a great piece of mind.
Looks like when i try to checkout, i says ran into technical issue
Looking at their website they no longer offer the one time 2 year price, it's now monthly @ 8.99/month and $149 deductible. Does that link you posted get around this?
Thanks,

Not sure, I purchased mine almost a year ago without issue. Give it a shot?
I went with www.upsie.com - it is better value.

I hit the same thing, AFTER it took my credit card. You don't need to use that link just google squaretrade sartphone plan.
I called the number and was told they no longer offer that plan and it was my fault for using google to find them. I explained I was on a page in their site that took my credit card and that he's telling me it's an old unsupported page that you can only get to through google.
I asked to talk to manager and was told they were all busy and one would call me back.
I've used these guys in the past but from that experience I'd stay away from them at all costs. They now have credit cards under false pretense. If I don't get a satisfactory answer within 24 hours I'll be reporting them for PCI violations
UPDATE: Got a call from a "Manager" who obviously had no more clue than the idiot I talked to earlier. He kept saying "well if we charge you, we'll refund". He obviously has not idea about credit card security or his company obligations. I will be reporting them to Allstate and filing a PCI complaint first thing.
I guess I'll get Upsie a shot.
I have used Worth Ave Group. For 1100 in coverage it is about $100 with $50 deductible. Covers accidental damage and theft but not loss.

I have used them for a couple years. Worthavegroup.com. I have made claims for an iPhone and note 8 and note 9. You make the claim then get it fixed (pay out of pocket) submit your receipt. They cut a check within a couple days for the cost minus $50.
