[Q] Micro USB (B-Type) to Female USB (A-Type) for hosting? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What are the chances that we'll be able to tweak things on the Nexus 7 so that you can plug a cable like this:
{

or an adapter like this:
and then the Nexus 7 can host USB devices, such as flash/thumb drives:
or SD card readers:
?
I don't own a Xoom, but I'm aware that people use dongles such as these to read SD cards, thumb drives, etc., on the Xoom. I learned this while reading umpteen posts where people were bashing this device's lack of a SD card slot. There was one lone response from a Xoom owner (and N-7 pre-order-er) who said that he wasn't worried about it, because he figured that the N-7 would be able to do this soon and maybe even immediately.
What do you think?

i've yet to see it actually confirmed in video/pictures but i've seen multiple reports of OTG (this setup) being confirmed in Android 4.1
my experience with this was the galaxy nexus. The GN was capable of OTG, but i wouldn't work out of the box. You had to root and install an app called StickMount and then it would work.
The only limitation was power. sd-readers, flash drives worked fine. Hard drive, wouldn't turn on.

Update: I've had many emails and questions about whether USB-OTG (On The Go) is supported on the Nexus 7, and didn't touch on it when I originally hit publish becuause I wasn't entirely sure. I've now confirmed that USB-OTG is supported on the Nexus 7, and works on the current Android 4.1 non-final build that has been sampled. That's encouraging, and I'll test it myself when I get home and to my miniUSB OTG adapter.
I've never used USB-OTG. What is it exactly? Just a way to hook to your computer for storage?

Team EOS Rom for the Xoom has it working and I've subsequently mounted thumb drives to my Xoom many times.
I believe the Galaxy Nexus has this working as well.
I'm quite positive it will be doable with the Nexus 7, if not on stock, then on a custom rom. By the sound of things, having some form of expandable storage is in high demand so I'm sure developers will make it a relatively high priority.
Edit: I have the second adapter in your post. I wouldn't recommend it as its pretty flimsy; I'd recommend going with the cable variant.

Brian at Anandtech was the key person getting people's hopes up (at least what was spread though the internet). He mentioned he would confirm if it worked when he got home, so maybe "home" is another country (hence the 24 hours with no answer yet).

lol .. must be. I've been checking back and no new info.

Also, reportedly a Jon from The Google Play Team said "Yes you can use an external storage through the microUSB."
PS. Brian at Anandtech says he's going to try it "as soon as he can" implying to me that he doesn't actually have a device in his hands. Worryingly he says that whoever he's asked about this (Google I guess) they "are being somewhat vague with filesystems / native support".
PS2. Just added by Brian @AnandTech (I cannot post the link)
Update 2: I've asked for further clarification about what USB-OTG functionality is supported. Using a mouse and keyboard will be supported, and I saw Google using an ethernet to USB adapter over USB-OTG as well. Unfortunately I found out that mounting USB storage will not be supported natively. In addition MHL is not supported

Well, I would be surprised if the hardware didn't support flash drives, but I'm a bit concerned about no MHL. Does the tegra–3 chipset support MHL or is extra hardware required? Maybe they expect everyone to buy a Nexus Q to stream videos to a tv... No thanks.

If the hardware is able to power up a USB mouse, I don't think it will have issues powering up a USB stick, if the feature is missing in the N7 kernel, I am sure it won't take too long until someone develops a "fix" to mount mass storage onto this tablet.

Nexus 7 doesn't support MHL or USB On-The-Go, but that's partly Google's call

I recently contacted a Google Nexus representative and he told me explicitly that the Nexus 7 does support MHL but that some additional software was required. He didn't say what kind of software and I don't know enough about MHL to make an educated guess. What would it take to make the N7 support MHL assuming the Hardware is there?
Also this guy might just be a misinformed employee because he's the only one who seems to think that it supports MHL

And USB OTG works as well. Romain Guy from Google posted already some posts on G+ about using the Nexus as Constroller for his Canon DSLR. I guess it's the same as with the Nexus Phone. Mouse, Keyboard, DSLR Camera out of the box and usb thumbdrives maybe again with root and the stickmount app.

only issue i have with believing that, is that the hd2 has a different usb port than ALL the other phones it mentions in 'compatibility', yet it doesnt anywhere mention having a mini to micro usb adapter included.....
I suspect (as happens a lot) they have released it as 'compatible with htc phones' and then just found a list of all htc phones to put on the website.
Be great if it did work, mind!
i also agree that this is a simple case of the seller not completely aware of what he is selling!
why? even the ancient HTC Touch is listed as compatible! now surely that can't be true!
its very likely misleading specs, but you're welcome to try and report here if you still feel like it!
Ugh, I hate how retailers are becoming less and less responsible for posting the right information on the products they sell. I would also hope that it can stream from the HD2 (as what I've read how the Droid is able to stream tv out now), but who knows. So many devs here are saying it's a hardware specific problem. I'm wondering about buying one and just returning it if it doesn't work.
I agree, Yes the cable will fit all these phones and therefore it is "compatable"
But the seller seems to fail to mention that your phone might not support video out.
In fact its complete crap, cos he goes on to list things like XDA 2, which didn't have a mini USB connecter, although it did do video out but only with the optional backpack!

If I'm not wrong, that Droid Incredible micro-USB cable has additional golden fingers (pins) in it to support analogue composite TV out with audio of which the HD2's USB port does not have.

Oh no, please, be my guest and try it, and report back
I believe this has been addressed on the forums a few times.
Although the snapdragon processor does support tv out, HTC did not implement this in the HD2. What this means in layman's terms is that there are no video channels going from the processor to the USB connector and therefore you will not get any tv out no matter what cable you plug in there, unless its a magic one.
The listing clearly says it is for the touch pro and touch pro 2 devices which do support TV out through the usb connector.

HDMI out cable doesn't seem to work

I bought a microusb to HDMI cable (Samsung P/N ECC1HU0BBE but not from Samsung, from some other random place) to see if it would work. It does not appear to work on my phone. I'm running the stock ROM, just rooted with the bloat removed.
I plugged it into an HDTV here at work, checked "TV out" in settings, and nothing. TV said it didn't see any input. I was dubious about this, especially since there's an option in there for NTSC/PAL which AFAIK doesn't apply to HDMI. This leads me to believe that maybe the TV out option is for something more like the classic ipod style analog video out through the headphone jack cable.
I tried: just checking the "TV out" box, switching between PAL and NTSC, restarting the phone with the cable connected, etc.
So, there's my anecdotal report. I'm guessing that our phone doesn't support this cable. I thought I had one of the latter (analog video) type in a box of cords somewhere but haven't been able to find it yet. Has anyone tried one of those cables?
(I'd post links to the cable I'm talking about but it won't let me! D
drat.
Maybe it only works with specific apps-- Did you try playing a movie in the built-in video player app?

You could have gotten a faulty cable. It's also possible the cable was assembled by some random joe making and selling junk cables. Where did you get it from? It may be a fake samsung cable and not true oem.

The cable I have looks exactly like that, down to the little plug symbol by the microusb port on the side. Also you'll notice that the part number you list is the same as the one I did but with an "STD" on the end. The page you linked me is where I started my search for this cable. The cable itself doesn't have any part numbers on it that I've found.
If it doesn't work on my TV at home either I'll take it apart and we'll see what's in there. I can't imagine much.
So, who knows? Maybe I have a knockoff, broken or wrong cable. If so, bummer for me, but that means that we still have the possibility of HDMI out on this device. So, someone buy that cable straight from Samsung (whenever they decide to start selling it) and prove me wrong! I'd be very happy
I bought the same cable and tryed everything...
I am not sure if it is a software issue or what. But it definitely is not sending signal threw this port. Tried a many different programs/apps and settings.
I thought "TV Out" was only for the analog video signal through the 3.5 mm jack.
where did you guys buy the cable?
just want to know
Thank You
It could be the cable. I had to buy a specific cable for my Greddy Emanage since they did something to switch the USB cable to make it proprietary. They charged $30 for the stupid thing too! Bunch of BS, anyhow, they may have done the same thing with the Vibrant.
I dont remember hearing anything about the Vibrant doing HDMI out though
i used an old 3.5 to rca cables from a motozine i had and video worked just fine on my tv. it kind of looks like crap on my 52 inch screen. but it worked. so im thinking maybe the video out only works through the 3.5 jack.
The Galaxy S doesnt support HDMI output. That was a accident statement from Samsung. That cable is for the "mondi".

Hmm. I wonder if it works on the Sprint Epic 4G, or on the international I9000. (There are several Galaxy S features that T-Mobile and AT&T have disabled, but which appear in other variants.)
What is the quality of the 3.5mm tv out..is it horrible? On youtube videos it looks really good, but its hard to tell by youtube. Will it look quite good on a 46" panasonic plasma?...no hdmi news is quite depressing, was really looking forward to that.

Tablets and USB OTG - Flash drives with micro USB?

With the rise in popularity of tablets and smartphones, and the microUSB port as the standard for these devices, could we see some flash drives designed for tablets that make use of the microUSB connector?
I'd love to buy a 64GB flash drive that can plug straight into my Nexus 7 and my smartphone and my friends' devices too.
It'll probably be charged at a premium due to the relatively niche usage, but regular 64GB drives are pretty cheap these days, and they're only going to get cheaper.
Has anyone seen or heard of anything like this? A USB OTG adapter isn't so big or expensive but it'd be great to have a storage device that works natively.
Um....a lot of us do this already. Hell, I watched a movie off of a flash drive today. Hyst get stickmount on a rooted N7. I got the micro usb to female usb on ebay for 99 cents shipped.
Maybe I misunderstand the question?

I did a search and this is all I could find:

Not exactly convenient the way it is. They would've been smarter putting the micro USB port on the side, but even then, very pricey.

Definitely a better price, but still inconvenient to have the connector on the end like that. I think that at least for now, it's more convenient to just have a separate cable, not to mention that I don't think I'd trust the reliability of these no-name flash drives in the long run.

Problem is, how do you then connect the otg thumb drove to your pc? There would also have to be a backward adapter. Also a switch to un-short the pins that define it as an OTG device.
That's why the cables are an easier way to go for now. ..

It will probably be a while before you can get a definitive answer since the tablet is not even released yet and all the reviews are on units with pre release software.
I think it will work ,search for same in xda you will find so much topics.
Well I'm assuming it can be tested on another device, such as the S3 or the Note 10.1. I just don't want to buy and realise that the USB stick requires too much power for it to work, or something along those lines which would render the purchase pointless..
I was also wondering what would be a better idea, getting a USB Memory stick + USB OTG, or getting USB OTG + MicroSD/MicroSD Reader? Is there any benefits of getting either over the other?

The one I've found says it has read speeds up to 30MB/s and write speeds of up to 17MB/s, which is the same as a Sandisk Ultra 64GB Class 10 Micro SD Card. I wanted Sandisk to release a 64GB version of their Extreme Pro microSDHC UHS-I cards, but it only goes up to 16GB

Anyone got an idea yet?
I was also wondering about the "L" shaped OTG adapter, I was thinking of getting that, but I weren't sure if, once plugged in, it'll hand down the side of the N10, or if it'll be faced up?

Judging from photos, a standard L-shaped (right angled) OTG cable should hang down on the side of a Nexus 10.
So I ordered a pair of these, the photo shows in order for it to hang down, the wider edge of the connector must be in the front. And here you can see, that is the case, I guess it was designed with those adapters in mind (though not neccessarily USB storage).
Anyway, if it doesn't mount the storage out of the box, there are tools to work around that.

[Q] Why isn't the Nexus 4 capable of USB Hosting/OTG?

deleted
It had better be software, other wise I'm refusing the order when it finally arrives, whenever that is.
While I don't use it all the time, OTG has saved my ass more than enough times at college.
It's definitely hardware -- the USB port isn't capable of supplying the 5V needed for host mode -- and so the software has been removed from N4 Android as well. There is speculation that a powered USB hub, with a patch to restore the software support for USB host mode, might work, but that remains unproven at this point, as far as I am aware.
I guess one will have to install a custom kernel to reenable to feature + StickMount and use one of these so it can provide proper power to the connected device:

I have that cable, and faux kernel which I believe has OTG enabled, but it does not work, power is not provided to the microsd adapter, when connecting the phone charger into the y-cable.

Oh Yea? its definitely hardware huh? well do you have a definitive source that says that, are you an expert in the field? This is what grinds my gears, same with the "Expert" who said the Nexus LTE chip was all dormant and useless to the device before someone found out it was a mod away from being enabled on the Tmobile soon to be 4g band. People always want to be the expert with their opinion and present it as fact. The FACT is people are still working on this issue and it has not yet been definitively solved as being software or hardware, Google/LG did change the online manual, but they did that because out of the box OTG wasnt supported, that doesnt mean its a hardware issue, This is what people thought about the One X before somebody found out how to do it, and made these "Experts" look like novices. My point is don't go casting your unsupported opinion and saying its "Definite".
If you read this Topic there are some references pointing out that the N4 doesn't provide the 5V.
Sounds pretty much like a hardware issue

Well, the two "definite" things that I know are that 1) the connector does not provide 5V, as required by USB peripherals (I checked that myself with a multimeter), and 2) the Google engineer's check-in comment from the commit that removed USB host mode support from the software said that the reason was that the phone cannot supply 5V. No one has knowledgeably suggested in any of these threads that there is a software mechanism that would enable the N4 hardware to supply 5V.
If I'm wrong, I will more than happily eat crow (I'd love to have host mode support as much as anyone else). In the meantime, I think it's a very reasonable conclusion that the hardware just isn't able to support USB host mode by itself, although I'm hopeful that some combination of software and external hardware that independently provides the requisite 5V will allow use of USB peripherals.

My Reasons to doubt all this is that the HTC One X was in the same boat everybody said it could't suppy the voltage, but its doing it fine now. Secondly the LG Optimus G is the first cousin of the Nexus 4, it is said the Nexus 4 has the same guts inside as the Optimus, and once again that runs OTG just fine. So Im thinking and hopefull, because I wont present any of this as definitive because I really dont know, just assumptions. And also I've learned with Google employees that in most cases when they dont know the reason they make it up, but hey I guess we really wont know until Google comes out with its next patch/update and see if it resolves the problem because Im sure there are a lot of complaints filed against them, and last I heard there wasnt a recall of the Nexus.

well i tried with matrix and franco as well and that doesnt work either....only other custom kernel available atm is from rasbean jelly..so I dunno.
Well have any of the kernel devs mentioned that they have even attempted to re-enable otg? I have found nothing in Franco, but that's the only one I've searched.

That would indeed be good news -- do you have a reference? I don't follow the Optimus G forum here; when I searched a couple of weeks ago, I found several people reporting failures and no successes, but that obviously could have changed in the interim.

The Optimus G doens't support OTG. It does not supply 5V like the Nexus 4.
