[Q] Thinking of Buying an A500. A few questions. - Acer Iconia A500

Hello, I've been tablet shopping and i found an A500 for $300 refurb. Best deal i can find around.
I want to buy it, but i'd like to ask a few questions first.
First off. It advertises as a Honeycomb tablet. Will there be an OTA ICS update waiting for me when i set it up?
If so, How is ICS on this device? Is it buggy? does everything work? Or will i be constantly rooting/roming to get it to work properly?
If i have to root/rom, How is it? Easy? difficult? oneclick? I know my phone was a pain, but another one i did was a snap. Wanted to know how easy it is to rom this device?
How is video playback? One of the main things i wish to do is play movies/videos. mainly; Netflix, Streaming, and .avi and mp4's. How is playback? I can't stand choppy video or audio-lag. So this is pretty important to me.
Also, Some basic performance reviews would be great. not the main purpose of this thread, but hey, any information is helpful.
I was looking between this and the EeePad transformer. Basically within $20 of eachother.
Thank you.

depending where you live you will most likely have ics waiting for you most places have it now ics runs nicely hadn't had any bugs with it so far the video playback is great the only time it starts to lag for me is when 1080p is being streamed to a TV ......rooting and romming is easy enough after root flashing custom roms is about 3 clicks from cmw lol rooting i cant say now i mine was rooted before ics but there's lots of tutorials performance wise it can be over clocked to about 1.5ghz but even not over clocked i hadn't found a game that will make it lag yet even N.O.V.A 3 with its online multi player and sweet graphics xD
Its not all amazing though there are some problems
1.some tablets don't have the best wifi saying even in the same room as the router they get one block of signal i think to be an old Gen problem though....i have surprisingly great wifi connection????
2.The Video recording is TERRIBLE on honeycomb not the video but the sound is all congested and gross, but if you do update it there has been BIG improvements with ics
3.does not like Bluetooth headsets with a mic input it will pair but not connect with most of them ,but some still work xD...
One more thing there is also built in GPS not needing wifi and great for gaming and modding so i think...external 3g Hawaii usb adapter have had success working micro sd works up to 64gb and external hard rive up to 2tb xD good luck hope this helped

You can beat that price easily. The last one I bought was auction style and got it for $210 shipped. It was the 8gb version. The 16gb can be had for a little more than that if you don't mind playing the auction game. Personally, I'd never pay more than $250 shipped for a refurb. I expect the refurbs to get to the ~$200 price point by the end of the summer.

As far as the rest... What Gears said.

Thank you both for the replies.
The WiFi connection concerns me a bit. But not a deal-breaker for sure.
Glad to hear video playback is good. As that's most likely going to be my main use of this tablet.
I don't use bluetooth headsets, so not too worried about that.
As for beating the price. Here in Canada, That's literally the best price i could find. Newegg.ca has it for $268. so after tax/fees, it's $301.
I'm not a fan of buying used electronics off ebay. Too much risk. and a boat load of hassle with returns/paypal. well, almost all are final sales. And i don't want to get screwed.
At least with sites such as newegg i get a warranty.
Even with that being said. I used your link and found one on ebay. Currently winning at $122. But with 6-days left. I doubt it will be a good deal. my max is $225, so we'll see how long that lasts.

FYI & I don't know if they are available in Canada, but a friend & I each picked up refurbished a500s from the referenced "Official Acer Store" on eBay. They came with a 90 day warranty. It was about 4 months ago and they were $267US then. Upon receipt both appeared to be brand new. Mine has had absolutlely no issues. My friend's developed a couple of horizontal colored lines after about 3 weeks. The Acer Store folks quickly arranged for a prepaid return and sent him another immaculate appearing unit in about a week. It has been flawless. None of the 3 units had any difficulty with Timmy Dean's v3.2.1, HC downgrade , the ICS OTA, or bootloader or ROM mods. Whatever you decide, goodluck. The a500 is a super piece of hardware and these forums are a goldmine of information and hours of reading pleasure!

I bought mine around valentines day off eBay for $280 refurbished, a 16gb version. Got the square trade warranty for $40. The tablet was fine for about a week and then my screen started coming up along the top/bottom edges. So I shipped it back. The second one has had no problem. I rooted, installed recovery, custom rom, and backed up on the first one. When my 2nd tablet came I was able to just root, install recovery and recover from my SD backup with no problem.
I love this tablet! Personally, I choose it over the Asus ones that were out at the time I got mine. From what I've heard, the Asus and other tablets don't allow a constant HDMI out like the Acer. They only utilize it when an app calls it. That could have been a stock rom issue, but even then if u have a newer tf101 u can't unlock it like its older model. As stated above, all games run flawlessly. I can play Shadow Gun then load up GTA3 and switch between the two without either game lagging.
You'll be happy with your purchase after the first minute of playing with the Iconia.

WiFi works quite well under Gentoo for me. On Honeycomb, it was sightly buggy at times. The changes in ICS seem to have gotten rid of this issue, for me at least.

Agreed i havnt had any wifi issues at all since ics

what specifically do you want to do with a tablet? That should help narrow your search , do you need root? do you need custom roms or is the stock fine? are you into testing? If your squeamish about "tech" stuff ,root /rom wont be your thing ,the stock roms offer alot in these tabs ,just having ICS doesnt ensure you anything over HC , most people have this problem about worrying about updates , getting antsy over it , if you go custom rom it all depends on what your comfortable with , you might change the rom daily ,or you might be totally satisfied ,I have a Windows phone 7 that has a custom rom I installed back in december , havent changed a thing since , On my Acer I couldnt tell where I was a week ago ,everything gets changed between a few days to a week !
Read the dev section , anything by skrillax ,civato ,vache, blkthdr (thor if you can find it) and Moscow desire to name a few and you'll be on the right track and as civato says "dont be a chicken, just do it" otherwise stay stock and wait for Acer............

Hate myself for asking but - should i buy?

Hey guys, like i said in in the title (and having been on xda for a while) I hate myself for posting a "should i buy" thread, but i think i must have missed something.
As far as i see it the vega has pretty much the same spec as tablets double its price (thinking xoom / eee transforma) and yet the only difference i can see is the shipped android version and 1.2ghs processor vs 1.0ghz in the vega.
I have a HD2 and am happy flashing and running custom roms (running Android on my HD2) so as far as I see it i can get honeycomb flashed in the not too distant future when the boys finish the ROM build and just overclock to 1.4ghz and I am away.
And here in lies my question really, is the touchscreen nice to use? Whats the viewing angle like? HDMI out actually any good in the real world? Anyone use the tablet for work and not just media?
I would like to be able to use an openoffice / MS application on my tablet and if i could connect it up to projectors/tvs via hdmi for presentations and media that would be a real bonus - but only if it actually looks decent and works well.
Thanks for the time taken to read this, I am serious about buying but dont want to waste cash on the vega if people think the eee transforma would be more suitable.
Thanks;
Andy

There is no OO (or LibreOffice or MS office) at all/ There is Google Docs and Pixel Office
Thanks for such a quick reply. Google docs is fine i think but does it work offline on the tablet ok? Whats pixcel office like?
Battery life about as advertised (8hours)
Sorry for rippling questions in, i guess im just trying to work out what i would get extra for over twice the cash in a xoom / eee.
The key difference in price seems to be tied to screen quality and what the big names think they can get away with charging. Clearly the Motorola has a much better screen display than the Vega. However, for the price, the Vega is great for trying things out. There are a number of different user ROM's available and you can see how to push the technology without worrying about messing up your 'expensive' tablet. Also the Vega is UNBRICKABLE.
I use QuickOffice HD on the Vega and find it able to cope with MS Office 2010 Docs and Spreadsheets with no major issues.
I usee quickoffice works a treat also corvus and newbe5 have created a honeycomb port which is still in progress but something to look towards to if you buy one
Thanks for the answers guys. Im actually in a position to buy one vat free at the moment so with the latest dixons price thats £160 for a 10in tablet. Im kind of finding it hard to tell myself the xoom screen would be worth the extra £300 but you guys have the advent what do you think?
Also, whats the max internal storage i can get 16gb microsd? Will USB thumb drives autmount when inserted?
And can you charge the advent via usb?
(I should say im out of the uk at the moment hence why i cant see the advent but can get vat free - gives with one hand..)
Thanks
I have an old-batch Vega, with a worse screen, and I'm not unhappy with it (it can be testy, but it works). The new batch has better screens, more responsive, so the main qualm against the device is partially deflected. For 160 punds you cannot go wrong: it's a super-budget price for a quite capable tablet. Right now there are new smartphones which are not up to the horsepower of an Advent Vega. And if you overclock it... oh boy. 1,4 Ghz at your service. Believe me, the Advent Vega is a steal.
I am running with a 32GB Micro SDHC which I think is the max it can take. You need to get the system into USB Host mode, which needs some changes either to the stock rom, or use one of the very good alternate roms, if you want to plug a USB Stick onto it, but you shouldn't have the need.
I don't think the Xoom is worth the extra at the moment while I am still assessing whether the tablet is an indispensable device for daily use. I do use the Vega daily though and find the screen fine if a little tight on brightness and viewing angle.
There is an over-clock kernel available here now that also gets the Vega to out-perform the Xoom.
32gb would be perfect - and im pretty much mind made up.
Custom ROM
32GB Micro
Overclock to 1.2 as a starter for 10
Android 3 when the boys get round to finishing it.
Thanks for all of your help / comments
I´m sorry to borrow your topic but I´m also considering buying this device (or POV Mobii since they pretty much share the same hardware) and no doubt that all this replies help make me rest assured that this is the best low budget tablet around, however I just cannot find a way to order this to Portugal.
I tried Amazon (only shows POV Mobii and for 280 pounds (!) which makes me feel like i´m being robbed) Ebay and other known on-line shops to no success.
Can anyone tell me where can I order this device (and identical ones as told before) on-line within EU? The ones I come across with at Ebay are from UK and none of them ship to Portugal, which is a shame.
Although I have the possibility I refuse to pay 500€+ for a device that otherwise would cost half if there was none of this tablet hype thingy messing with the markets (Shame on you Mr. Jobs).
Any help is appreciated guys.
Thank you,

Hi Badmix.
You can try to order the PoV Mobii Tegra from Amazon.de .. I don't know about the shipping to Portugal, but the Price in DE is 280€. Just try it if the price is ok for you
best regards
£160 !?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
JUST BUY it... just buy it now... don't waste the chance!!!
It's an absolutely steal!!!
32Gb - no problem (I have 16gb and don't use it all)
overclock? - Corvus 1.5Ghz done.
USB drive, mouse n keyboard? - custom kernel (needs reboot) or use the dock station (as I do)

If you are still unclear, Advent are a firm under the Currys/PCWorld brand and only operate in the UK.
If you can find someone who is willing to buy for you (for a 'fee' maybe), then that is prob the best way to go.
Hope this helps.
Thank you for the helpful replies.
I just ordered from a German shop the POV Mobii Tegra for 236£ (270€) and I am pretty sure that I could not have done a better deal for the amount of money i was willing to spend.
Next step: buying a decent case to give my new investment the biggest life spawn possible.
Cheers guys once again.

Ebay have a fair few if you want nearly new.
Other than that dixons group have the monopoly on this item sadly.
Okay thanks, another question that is keeping me from buying this is that I'm wondering whether the Vega has multitouch problems like the desire and nexus one, also has anyone played games like Nova and how does it run and is it playable with the multitouch.

[Q] Is the Nook the best choice for me?

Hey all I'm in the tablet market with about $300.. I'm trying to make sure the NC is the best choice for me before I go buy one.
I want to play Droid games, watch movies, read books and get good support for my device.
Is there any other tablets in my price range I should be considering other than the NC?
Also can a new NC be rooted and booted right off the showroom floor purchased new?
Thanks for the replies!
Well, yes, there are other tablets in the 250-350 range. Is your 300 a hard number? I flexed it up and down by 50 dollars.
NC can be rooted fairly quickly. I actually looked online here for a few days before I bought mine and knew what to do off the bat. I knew to buy a couple 4 gb disks, what I didn't realize is I needed sandisk branded ones.
So for what you're going to be doing get some sandisk 4 gb discs, prob 2, and get a larger one or two (16 or 32) for a alternate boot for cm7, sandisk of course.

So in your opinion is there an easier device to use thats as supported? My $300 range isn't really a hard number.. I'd love a Transformer - but thats over doing it.
I've considered the Viewsonic Gtab cause a friend has one.. but not sure at this point which road to travel.
Easier to use?
I mean, if we're talking out of the box. Nook is the worst tablet out there because the e-reader and functionality sucks.
After getting CM7, it's pretty nice but that takes about an hour to do.
Once you root the Nook and put CM on it, it becomes golden.
Nook Color Gaming
There's gaming for you. For what you are looking for, you can't go wrong with the NC. It just depends on if you are willing to take the time to optimize it.

Granted that reminds me of the imei problem with nooks. I guess that's something else to consider. Re: gameloft stuff and a few other programs here and there.
,I agree with iammarino...the nookcolor is pretty sweet once you root it. Cm7... if u want to watch movies I have found the easiest and nicest way is to install Netflix...

true and there are work arounds about other issues like setting model to htc/vision, probably could do htc/flyer and be a bit more accurate with another 7 inch table in regards to market.

I love my NC. I'm running CM7 off an SD card, and I've used Dizzy's IMEI program so now I have that working too. There are a number of things you can do to make the NC experience very fulfilling. And at 250 new, ~200 refurb, that leaves you a bunch of extra dollars for playing and extra kit (sdcards, case, etc.)
Having said that though, it really depends on your personality and the amount of time you have to tweak the NC to fully bring out it's capabilities. You can now get a refurb Samsung Galaxy Tab (carrier version, not Wifi-only one) within your budget and have vendor supported Gingerbread out of the box, IMEI is solved due to being a carrier edition, slightly better stock hardware without needing to overclock, camera and GPS.
If I had to do it all over again, I would personally still pick the NC simply because I have the time and inclination to play and tweak. But do you?

Class Action against Acer over A500?

I'm not the first guy to call in the attorneys but my frustration over the wi-fi issues on the stock A500 and the lack of a adequate resolution over the issues have me thinking class action. Anyone else thinking along these lines?
Im not rooted, and ive done nothing special to this thing except getting 2 OTA updates (the first one and then 3.1) and ive never had any problems with the wifi.
maybe you should just do a warranty replace?

Many others have reported it as a software issue and I'd be without for up to a month while they "fix" a non-existent hardware issues and I have to pay shipping for the privilege.
Cause everyone wants something for nothing. Rather than just return it and get a replacement or a different brand they prefer to try dragging a lawyer into it. Mine since I replaced my first has worked flawless.
Your poll is missing some options. Like or Are you happy with the product..... plus many other options.
I'm happy with my tablet, haven't had any issues with it, and I really mean it; none whatsoever. As such I sure wouldn't partake in any class action suit.

What wifi issues? You mean the lack of AdHoc support? That's an Android thing and bugger all to do with Acer in the first place, plus, it uses my phone's hotspot mode fine. Four of my phones, in fact. Mind you, they're all Acer's so maybe they run their hotspot in infrastructure mode instead of AdHoc...

I paid a premium for the unit when it first came out. I'm not asking for something for nothing. I want a software fix for a demonstrated problem which they had 2 chances to do (3.0 and 3.1). It's like buying a new car and then being told you can't drive it for a month while they repair it. I've tried to get support and having the unit out of my hands for up to a month and paying for the shipping doesn't do it for me...I'd take a software fix or advanced replacement with my credit card as collateral, but Acer doesn't consider it something they would do to resolve what is obviously their problem.
I can't paste links yet, but a quick search of wifi and 3.1 will get you several threads.
I had intermittent problems which were traceable back to DHCP leases in 3.0 and then under 3.1, it became unusable like many others.
You wont win...
I as well am very happy with my Oxonian.very happy with my Acer monitors very happy with my Acer notebook.that I did have to have repaired.not only did they fix the fan noise issue when I sent it in.tech called me saying if I would like he would replace the keyboard and the bezel over the track pad as there were some cosmetic wear
Acer is second only to HP in sales and service.and this is only due to the fact HP has awesome tech support.
For the trolls this is my openion if you disagree its your right state your. Openion if you like do not bash mine

I paid the premium when it first came out and I noticed the GPS was not working so I returned it and got a replacement that did work. Quit whining, you should have returned it when you found the problem. Now since you waited your stuck using their support, that's how the system works.
Mine never drops connection, I have read where others are but I would have returned it. Even if you win a Class Action, the only ones that make money are the lawyers and you will still have a tablet your not happy with.
Sometimes bad things happen to good devices! That's what warranties are for. And if you didn't deal with it during your exchange period, that's too bad for you! Now you'll have to deal with the warranty procedure.
The court systems are bogged down with frivolous litigation. I have the utmost faith that Acer will deal with your rare wifi issue promptly and fairly. And if you aren't willing to take the appropriate steps to remedy the situation, I think it's highly unlikely that a judge is going to even look at the case.
Shameful, if you ask me. But that's just my two cents. Enjoy your lawsuit
I have had no problems with the WiFi on my A500. connects every time and I have never lost connection.
Moonking
The only real issues of this fine tablet are a) the dhcp lease issue, which can be manually solved in literally 30 seconds and b) the slow gps lock, which has been improved in the leaked 3.1 (the chinese version that appeared here about 20 days ago) that I use. And if all else fails, we already have custom ROMs and custom kernels that can add extra functions and remove Acer bloatware.
So, if you can't be bothered to correct the wifi issue everytime, just return your device and get yourself an ipad or something.

Same here. WiFi and GPS works great from day one till 3.1 update. Same on 4 Iconias my friends have. If it doesn't work just return it or replace it with a new one. Much cheaper then loosing a law suite.
No issu here since the begining with Wifi or GPS of my tablette.
I'm change many times of firmware, for finaly stay with 020 stock 3.1, with all firmware i'm try, wifi always working nice, connect in less than 1s, so...
I have had the wifi problem and the fix for it is pressing the reset button up to two time. Doing once worked for me but some people have to do it twice to fix the problem. I am rooted with the adhoc fix. O be sure to turn off wifi between reset and forget connection.

Rooted, running latest official 3.1 build and have no issues. GPS works great. Wifi works great. System is fast, web browsing is great, and I am impressed by the structural integrity of the unit - don't use any screen protection, been using my a500 hours a day and not a single scratch on the screen.
Highly recommended this unit to friends and family, who report similar experiences.
OP - maybe you are doing it wrong?
WiFi got better for me after the 3.0.1 update then alot better after the 3.1 update. Then someone on the forum suggested firmware updates for the router. Bingo!
Also I don't care much for lawyers, especially class action lawyers.
If it wasn't for lawyers we wouldn't need lawyers.
What's black and brown and looks good on a lawyer? A doberman.
There was a dead skunk and a dead lawyer in the middle of the road, what was the difference? Skid marks in front of the skunk.

Im not looking for specs or price, i need to know what people think of convenience; i mean ill be carrying these in a bag, or possibly on my arm, ill be using them while walking, sometimes while in class, other times on the bus etc..
honestly i dont know if you guys will be able to help here but i do ask that you contribute something to tip my hand so that i dont spend hours wondering if i made the right choice myself and letting it ruin my experience.. thanks

Here is a thread similar to yours.
Can a tablet replace a laptop?
Here is my post from that thread too.

Well I don't have a TF300 but I do have a TF101 and all-in-all, I am extremely happy with it. In fact I use it more than my laptop. However, I do still use my laptop as a repository or sorts for hosting, downloads and some other Android-type things that a tablet just can't do.
There have been some stability issues with the whole line of Transformers in one form or another. But if you are experienced enough to figure out that it is not a hardware problem, then they all can be fixed one way or another.
I had always thought that tablets were nothing more than just large phones but then I used a friend's Xoom and realized that there was much more to them than that. So, I searched and searched and read and read some more about all types of tablets and what would best suit me. I wanted to know about support (XDA type support), Rooting, development as well as manufacturer support, O/S updates and basic compatability with my daily life.
After all that was done, I decided to purchase the TF101 (in Feb of this year) and have been happy with it. Later, I eventually bought a keyboard dock and between that and my usage patterns, it has beyond outstanding battery life (3-5 days with moderate use). There are several apps that emulate Xcel, Word, microsoft family as well as Polaris. Can watch HD YouTube vids just fine too. I had jury duty a few weeks ago and while I was waiting, I watched Netflix for about 3 hours and didn't put a dent in my battery life and it didn't get hot either.
Storage is unbeatable. Tablet comes with 16/32gb (I have 32gb version), External Micro-SD (up to 32gb) and the dock holds up to 32gb full-sized SD. So if you do the math that is 96gb of storage on a tablet.
I know you are thinking about the TF300 but this is my POV from the TF101. I say pull the trigger on it. You already have the laptop so it isn't like you have to choose between getting one or the other.

Thanks alot Woodrube; so you would say that a transformer would probably work best for me?
im just not sure that id ever use the transformer without its lapdock so im wondering if itll just be a bogged-down version of a netbook... the Nexus with keyboard, on the other hand, would be used separately when i just need portability and together when i need a 'laptop' of sorts.
Thanks for the opinion
You'd think that you would use it more as a laptop than a tablet, but that is the beauty of the dock. It comes off. I use mine as a tablet more than a "laptop", but I am not in college anymore. So mine is totally recreational. I bought mine in February at BestBuy for $399 for the 32gb one. Then while cruising Ebay one night,I found a dock for $70 (retail was $150). So I got the dock on the cheap.
I do use OfficePro and apps like that but I don't use it as a reader at all (for books and stuff). There are a few of us that have Transformers, of one fashion or another. Mr_Psycho, me, Globespy, Manus all have TF101's, DougFresh and Shreddintyres both have TPrimes and another RC friend of mine actually developed the exploit to root the entire Transformer line.
Obviously the N7 is a Google Experience device, so there is all that too. If you want anything more specific, feel free to PM me about your needs and what they might be and I can shoot you some more info and some app links.
Either way,one thing that I would suggest is to get you hands on both. They are cool, but are also very different from your phone-type use (if that make sense). Plus the chiklet style keys are a bit difficult to adapt too. I find that I mistype more than normal. But I use a full keyboard at work, have a laptop at home and my TF's dock, all with different sizes of keys and pressure points. Head over to BestBuy or MicroCenter and test drive one for a bit. Could probably go to Starbucks or school library too.

Thats actually a great idea, going to test them out.. I'm going to do that and see what i think. Thanks again bro, youve been a big help
Like Woodrube I have a TF101 as well. Besides when I capture video and render, I use my tablet 90% at home. It has 100% replaced my laptop, 90% replaced my desktop, and 20% replaced my work desktop. I use my desktop and NAS to store files, so having 44GB~ of space is not a problem (which on a tablet shouldn't be anyway.)
I would say that a tablet should be able to do what you are looking for, but I would get a feel for them in person before buying. I could not live without a tablet the size of the TF101, but my wife would not go above 7 inches (she loves her Nook and plans on replacing it with the Nexus 7 most likely).

Do you mind if I ask what field you are going into? If it is a technical field you might have a real need for a laptop instead of a tablet that is all I was thinking about.

I guess that is true and there should be a computer lab for any software they require you to use.
When I went to college the first time, I was going for a BS in physics too. I got all the way with only 4 classes until I graduated. Then I cracked and couldn't do any math at all. I couldn't even add up golf scores or bar tabs. Quit school for 2-3 years and went back and got my history degree.
This was a long time ago, but when I was in the program, was the same time that Linux (not Unix) came out and when I first learned about kernels and command lines. I still dabble in the physics program. Actually, I have employee access the the internal CERN website (don't ask) and I am on there quite frequently.
Younix, if you have any questions, please feel free to PM me. Also take a look at my profile, you'll see something funny in my "Interests" section.

Wow huge coincidence huh? Saw the advanced physics thing.. nice lol.
So what do you think? Is it a good career/degree choice?

MIUI on tegra?

With the public release of MIUI V6 pretty much happening now, and with the MiPad with almost identical specs to the Shield Tab. I think MIUI V6 would be a nifty addition to the tegra note for those who want a little more "top line" feel OS, those who want a full suite of OS rather than the basics.
Also might be just fun to try it out. I was actually gonna start working on a ROM for the TN7 but then a damn OTA decided to kill my device! If I can get it fixed soon I'll try and get MIUI working. Unfortunately it's not sold in my country so I can't even get a replacement! Moved to Belgium so no shops here sell it, only sell the new shield tablet. Also seems to be running out of stock many places. Hell if someone would be kind enough to donate one I'd love it but I won't get my hopes up, I would buy one from someone if they were able but I cannot use paypal/online payments at the moment while moving and setting banks up etc.

Sorry for your Device.
I saw some market places in France still selling it very cheap (Zotac TN7 brand).
The bad is I don't want to make any adverts for them because I had very bad support (as always).
Just google TN7 Zotac for France.
