users who bricked your tf300, tell us how you screwed up so that we won't do the same - Transformer TF300T General

when i first got my tf300t i pretty much just jumped in and messed with the build.prop without much research. i was lucky not to have bricked it since i bought it used meaning if i bricked out i would have no way of returning it.
let us know how you guys bricked your tablet so that we can be more carefull not to brick it ourselves.

I bricked mine changing the build prop and then deleted the old and pasting the new back in to get the .29 update without changing the permissions back before rebooting. Upon reboot it just started up in the Asus screen and stayed there, I could not get ADB, fastboot or anything to work. Hope this helps others!

here's a screen cap of the permissions my build.prop currently has.

Not afraid to admit I bricked my first 300 also messing with the build prop, tried to change the model code to get some apps to show up in the store. Had worked before, but not that time. So Im extremely careful with that now.

is there any way to recover after bricking the pad?

Technically bricking means that the device becomes permanently useless, essentially a glass/plastic brick. When a device is truly bricked, it doesn't even power on.
That's why you'll see the terms "hard brick" and "soft brick". A hard brick is a true brick, as described above, and a soft brick just means that the operating system is currently inaccessible. It's possible to recover from most soft bricks depending on the actual problem. You just have to figure out how.

Do NOT flash the stock blob on CWM with staging mounted. I accidentally did that whole trying to unmount something else . And now I'm left with a paper weight lol.

Bricked TF300 when changing the "build.prop"...
Yesterday I tried made some tweaks like described in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1641219 ..
And now I have this same situation like Gam3r 4 Life has.....
Is there any way to fix this????

i'd try to push the modified build.prop and replacing it with the stock one using adb.

I wish we had a odin type thing for our tabs.

is the tweaked builld.prop suppossed to be rw-rw-r like in the screenshot above?
so a brick from build.prop is considered a hard brick?
what everyone doing now with the bricked tf300. just give up. or does someone have tricks up there sleeve lol

i believe it's supposed to be rw-r-r, that's how i have it and it works.
i'm haven't heard of anyone with their bootloader locked fixing a build.prop brick, their only option would be to return it via the store you bought it from or sending it to directly to asus if your within waranty period. now if you've unlocked your bootloader that's a different story, i believe you can fix a build.prop brick by flashing a rom using cmw.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T

Can't you guys just install a full Asus update from the sdcard? That's how it works on the TF201 if you messed with system files and are still locked.
Anyone tried that?

The stock build.prop is rw-rw-r. The modified build prop is rw-r-r.

I wouldn't come to the conclusion not to mess with build.prop for everyone's mistakes. I would learn from everyone's mistakes. So u. O what not to do.
Its well worth it. And as long as u follow instructions. And don't do what other people did. Then I'll be all good

possbile to flash asus blob from CMW
I just unlock the bootloader of tf300 and flash the CMW recovery. It works really fine. Just curious, is it possible to flash asus blob(download from the asus support website) from CMW recovery. Or I have to use the way describe in this post

[Q] Safe to root a droid x?

I heard a while ago that if you root your droid x wrong/at all you will turn it into a brick and not be able to unlock it in anyway. Is this still true? I want to be sure I didn't pay 150$ for something that I am going to potentially turn useless.
There is always the slight possibility that any phone can be bricked, if you're too concerned about bricking your phone just leave well enough alone. No harm no foul right.
The Z4 root seems pretty fool proof, its mainly when you start doing themes and others hacks that you can really screw things up since you're messing with more files.

I haven't heard of anyone bricking their phone by rooting... i used z4root...as long as you follow the directions while themeing your phone or flashing new roms i feel its pretty hard to brick your phone... each dev has instructions for flashing their rom and they seem to be all the same... some might not require you to wipe system as the rom will do that while its installing.. there are even videos on youtube for flashing roms... now if you did brick your phone you would have to sbf your phone and there are instruction on doing that online as well... you just gotta go for it as i think flashing a new rom is well worth it regardless of the rom you flash....

Yes and no... I believe what most people are trying to express here, is there are plenty of benefits to rooting your phone. However, if you truly are not computer/technologically savvy, I would advise you to wait before rooting. Do some reading around on the forums here. I feel like there have been a lot of people lately who have tried to root their phones, and make modifications to their phones that are a little over their head.
While yes, many times there are great instructions to follow so even those who are not super familiar with android or technology can still get by... But with that, many of the modifications involve doing some tasks that can be done (e.g. typing in a command wrong) that can result in damage to your phone.
I don't write this to deter you from wanting to modify your Droid X, don't get me wrong. I simply wish you the best with your modifications and advise you to do some research before jumping in head first.
Good luck, and if you have questions, feel free to ask. There are plenty of people here who are more than happy to help =)
Do a bootstrap recovery first, install z4root, enjoy.... I didn't understand all this when I started ether, if you look up rooting droid x on youtube there are step by step videos to help you.

I think most people get in trouble when they really start digging deep into the system files and don't know what they are doing. Flashing roms can be a bit scarry with a locked bootloader like the dx has. I suggest that you read all you can about the subject first, that helped me get comfortable with the whole process before I did it. Now I'm glad I did root. Z4 root is super easy, one touch, no computer needed pm me if you need the file.

How to Root the ASUS Transformer

This thread is dedicated to helping you root your ASUS Transformer. Either method may not work if you are using a device with serial number 'B70' or above.
If you have updated your Transformer to 8.6.5.21 using the latest OTA, please install the downgrade-fix below, 8.6.6.19, to successfully use Razorclaw.

Razorclaw: http://androidroot.mobi/2011/11/14/introducing-razorclaw-v1
It is extremely important you read the Razorclaw documentation in full.

Unbrick Your Device / How to use NVFlash
In the unlikely event you brick your device, don't worry, it can be saved. It's very easy. Please download NVFlash and any ROM flashable using NVFlash above, and follow the steps below.
Put your device in APX mode: Connect your device to your computer via USB and power on the device holding both the Power and Volume Up buttons for about 3-5 seconds. The screen will remain black.
Install the required drivers for APX: If you haven't installed them already, find your “APX” device in Device Manager and update driver manually, pointing it at usbpcdriver in the nvflash.zip.
Prepare your ROM: Download your chosen NVFlash ROM and place the system.img, recovery.img, and boot.img in the nvflashtf directory. "/nvflash/nvflashtf/".
Start the process: Run download.sh (Linux only) or download.bat (Windows only) to start the process.
NOTE: NVFLASH CAN ONLY BE USED ON AN SBK1 DEVICE. PLEASE CHECK YOUR DEVICE IS COMPATIBLE BEFORE ATTEMPTING THIS METHOD.
Razorclaw's tool is the easiest way to root and I think Prime does allow to OC (its in the Prime Tweaks options...)

Mad simple.
---------- Post added at 03:53 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:50 PM ----------
This is a very well thought out thread with a great layout. However, the Razorclaw app and Recovery Installer app method is much much much easier. No computer needed. No drivers or cables needed. Just your TF and a connection.
These 2 apps need to be added to the reference thread. The info there is outdated.
that was an older method..razorclaw is more convenient,no pc,no cable.IMO there isn't needed a tuto for root, because is too simple...install an pak...install anotheer one to have cwm...that's it!!
Thank you all for informing me this information is now out of date. It will be updated soon.
nothin' mate,it is very easy now with that!the only problem, not for me,is the future asus's ota that can brick the device if we return to stock and upgrade from asus....
Why worry about an OTA update when the devs will have an ICS build out before ASUS?
infact for me it isn't a problem, but i red that for some people is bad don'r receive ota asus anymore.personally i go with revolver, until fabio released an ics build!

My understanding is that once you are rooted any unroot method should work to bring you back regardless of the model number. I haven't had the need to revert back. I also have a B90 and am rooted with CWR. There are two threads about unrooting in this thread that people claim success but have yet to figure out if anyone had a B90. I'm assuming soon people will try to unroot now that a lot more people probably own a B90 model.

Me too. Let me know though.
I got this earlier and it failed on install. Like has been said at 26.2MB I seriously doubt it's ICS.
Tab restarted and it showed the android icon. A status bar went like a quarter of the way until it showed the android with an exclamation point and froze. I freaked out and held power to shut it down. It booted to cwm and I restarted.
Not sure if it even completed the update at all.

Damn. I just got that message too and said "go" because I have root with backup (ota rootkeeper) and CWM so I thought let's see but all it did was reboot *into CWM!!* and gave me some error, checksum mismatch or whatever. Rebooted and all is still untouched "old" version.
Now system/about says no update available. How can I manually install this? I think it's a new modem and hope it is and that it will finally fix the horrid 4G reception issues. My Droid Razr gets SOOO much better signal in the same area.
Does anyone by chance have a clean, fresh stock install plus this update and can pull me a CWM nandroid backup ?

Has anyone tested whether we will lose root by upgrading? And if so does the root.zip work to get it back?
Given what's at stake (IPv6 functionality), I don't think I care whether I do it or not, I just want it to stop asking me.

I applied this OTA last night. Since then, I'm seeing much poorer data speeds: Previously had pretty solid LTE speeds, now I'm lucky to exceed 500-1000kbps down.
Does anyone know if the previous i815 ROM / previous radio file is available online to flash via desktop Odin? (I've searched but didn't find anything but a nandroid file -- I'm not rooted, so don't have CWM.)

That is not something I've done myself but all my reading indicates yes you can. It will just overwrite it. Again, make sure you install the recovery version which matches your version of android.

Serioulsy OP, seems like you got a great return/replacement policy but you should explore a bit XDA forums and posts before trying to modify your new toy!
Good luck!

Custom Boot Logos

I finally figured out how to create boot logos for the A500 using Skrilax_CZ guide here ,i made one soo far, just to see how it looks and it is definitely a keeper,so i decided to share it with you guys and make some more,i will also make them as flashable zips to use on any of the compatible recoveries for the A500.Also make sure you do have the unlocked ICS bootloader installed... here
If anyone wants me to make them a custom boot logo, either post a background you wish to use or use one of the ones i post.
1)drop the zip on your internal sd card
2)boot into the recovery of your choosing
3)wipe cache and delvik
4)find the zip you just loaded onto your internal sd card and install
5)whala you have a new custom boot logo
The attachments are in order with the screens

Very nicely done Diablo :good: I'm running Civato's Re-Flex-ShellShock ROM and have customized it by adding his "CyanogenMod" bootanimation from his CM10-Flex ROM. Your blue bootloader text harmonizes well with the blue bootanimation. I now have a distinctly customized bootup procedure. Great work.

Thank you sir.
24 downloads and only 1 reply and 4 thanks, come on guys.
Diablo ..... Got to repeat myself because you should be thanked for your fine efforts
I've just downloaded the "Reflex ShellSHOCK" one you've done which I doubt you did for me alone, but it will go nicely with my ShellSHOCK ROM.
I have some sympathy with your comments. You may or may not know (or care) that in July last year I started a thread in "Themes" inviting people to produce Boot Animations for the A500, by the first couple of months of this year I had posted approximately 40 of my own creations and several other people had chipped in and submitted many more. However in the last few months the interest and creativity seem to have left the A500 forum so it was a pleasure to see your thread appear and I for one really appreciate the work you have obviously put in. :good:

Yes and this seems to be the same thing at the EVO forum, looks like i might need to upgrade to more modern electronic devices here, the ones i have seem to be prehistoric, even though,in my opinion are the best on the market.Yea i was getting the idea that this was turning into a ghost town also,it sucks,i should have spent more time on here than i did,i dev for the EVO,so that, school, work and a gf took all of my time,i've been using Thors rom for a couple years, lol. Thanks again for your appreciation,if you ever need any help with computers or android,or just want to BS,hit me up on [email protected]
Nice work.
Those are really sweet. Very crisp and clean. Thank you for the effort. I'll inject them onto some of my clients and Friends tablets after see your post and they choose their favorite.

Custom Boot Logo Creation Instructions
Hi Diablo,
Thanks for the custom logos. I was wondering if you have put up instructions to use to create a custom boot logo. Ive been trying to create one using Skrilax's post, but seems like the application is crashing for me. Would really appreciate it .
Thanks,
Jay
I've gone ahead and thanked you for the post. I may post back shortly with a request, or at least guidance. I want a custom boot logo but I don't know what of...
Prehistoric? The a500? WIth a proper kernel or ROM patch and some tweaks, it can benchmark with the Nexus 7!!! I love my a500. Only thing that will take it from me is internal memory failures or physical damage. Loving the full USB port and always have been.
Is it possible to get the attached JPG made into a boot image?

This link shows how to easily make and install a custom boot image.

I've injected your image into the Skrylax_cz V8 bootloader.bin and attached it.
But if you want to, open your favorite paint program and add some text or whatever to your image, follow the tutorial and you'll have something more personal.
I certainly will. Thank you!

Only issue I've run into is that the a500 tool that Blackthund3r made keeps crashing out because it can't find 'bct.dec" (I modified and made my own image). I'll have to hunt down his thread and aks there.

I think that it is safe to use the default and just "Next" right past that. I've used it more than a few times and never had an issue. But be sure to do what feels comfy to you. Research, etc, first.
Ill try it out. The guide says you have to use a custom onne for rooted devices but we will see
