Friends EVO stuck on 2.1 Update 1 lol - EVO 4G General

Phone is stock as a whistle. She always denied the OTA cause she was afraid of getting charges from the warning it stated even tho shes on an unlimited plan. Any who, I updated the phone twice but its still 2.1. My question is, can I keep it stock and flash an update or do I have to root? I am familiar with the rooting process and im sure its easy since its an old version. And if I have to root I mine as well flash a ROM.... any suggestions on ROMs or flashing stock OTAs
would be looking for a GB Rom unless there is something very good and stable for ICS

Team D.I.R.T. cm9 is the most stable ics rom out in my opinion. So if ur gonna go thru the trouble of rooting it, y not throw some ice cream sandwich on there.

What version does it show? I think there were a couple of updates before 2.2, as I understand it you'd have to do each one in order.
ETA: Yeah, if you look here there is a list of the OTA's that came out for this phone, looks there were two on 2.1 before the update to 2.2. Looks like about 9 to go...

Actually, it's 7 updates (8 if the latest one has been pushed) because some of them will be skipped. OTA is the long way, and 3.26 doesn't appear to push to the phone anymore anyway, so you will be stuck on Android 2.1. The easiest way if you are just looking to update the phone is to run one of the latest Rom Utility Updates like this file.
http://goo.im/stock/supersonic/ruu/...15.00.12.19_NV_2.33_release_234563_signed.zip
Do not unzip it. Just rename it PC36IMG.zip (not PC36IMG.zip.zip, easy to do). Place the file on the SD card. Power off the phone, then hold the volume down + power buttons. If there are not any SD card issues, it should go through a process, then ask you do you want to update, which you should say yes.
And yes, you could also root the phone and then flash a custom ROM if you choose not to take the update. Since it's still on 2.1, unrevoked at www.unrevoked.com would be the easiest root method. There are at least 2 others, but they are a mess.

Thanks for the directions above man it worked like a charm... except the contact sync lol but she has Instagram! lol she wanted to stay stock

Will you unroot for 2.1?

Seems alot of this "everyone will unroot for 2.1" vs. "no one will unroot for 2.1" arguments is going on. Personally, I'd say you'd have to be a fool to unroot for 2.1. Toast has about everything but the camera working, Darch is getting an AOSP built. Even if Sprint DOES release it first, XDA will have custom ROMs up within 24 hours.
EDIT:
Yes, I made a typo on the poll.
Probably, assuming I can use one of the 1.5 RUUs to go back.
On another note, I anticipate that once the official 2.1 is released, all of the current 2.1 builds will basically dissolve and, eventually, all future development will be based on the official 2.1 release.
That's just a guess, but I think it's a good one.
Nandroid muthafucka, can you use it?
Using RA to go back to 1.5 and then doing the RUU is the only way I've gotten it to work.
Get an "Error 180" otherwise.
I'm assuming that the 2.1 update will overwrite RA the way the 1.5 RUU does.
If it doesn't, then of course restoring a Nandroid directly will be sufficient. If it does, then I'll need to go back to the 1.5 RUU, then root, then apply the backup.

First things first, I think the answer mostly depends on if someone tries it and reports whether they can root again afterwards or not.
If so, I believe many will unroot and upgrade.
If not, I doubt anyone here will do it.
Secondly, Toast's 2.1 build, while great(I use it daily) is not even close to the final 2.1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elDD2mxE4ak
^^ Something a bit more like what we will have
Ah crap, I thought you meant you'd keep root.

Potential problem being you may not be able to go back to the 1.5 RUU.
For example, if you flash Sprint's second RUU that was released, you are then unable to flash the original one.
So it may end up being you cannot go back to 1.5. Not sure how likely this is though due to the operating system version change, they may allow you to go back because some users may not like it(for some reason )
No, here at XDA some cool guy will probably make a better ROM based on 2.1
I agree that I will probably wait to see if someone can still root after the update if yes then I will probably go back and update then root again. if not then I will wait for one of the great devs here to release a rom built off the official 2.1 so I can keep root
You'd be a fool to unroot for 2.1. After you unroot, it might take weeks, months, or years to find a new exploit to root again. I say keep root and wait until our awesome devs have a rooted version up
I might unroot, but then again I don't want to wait for a root exploit ...
so I might stay rooted and wait for the devs to come out with a nice suitable ROM ...
I'm gonna wait for an root exploit before locking my phone down again with the 2.1 official. Then i'll probably try the official 2.1, not like it, and go back to an XDA 2.1
I give it about 72 hours before my curiosity gets the better of me, but only if there isn't already a viable 2.1 release here.
unroot
I would unroot for the update, simply because i have so much faith in the dev community. Im sure they will be able to root it again.

You love the dev community, yet you'll unroot in hopes they'll be able to root it?
Why not just wait for them to put up a custom ROM and keep root? I really doubt it'll take longer than a few hours, maybe a day to put out a fully working ROM
Well, i didnt say i wouldnt give them time either, ill wait about 2 or 3 days for them to make a custom rom, but i am so damn excited about the update i really am feeling like i am getting the short stick with the cdma hero on sprint. honestly the update needs to come asap.
why would anyone unroot to update? it would only take ten minutes to extract their build and just make an update.zip out of it. u flash it and its as good as sprints ruu. even better because u wont have to worry about root or upgrading to the next android version. lets not forget 2.1 isnt the end of the road for android. as soon as they start releasing updates for it. u can bet they are already working on the next build of android. but yeah i wouldnt unroot for the update. ill just get it, exstact it, make an update zip, and flash that sucker. then go back and tear it apart and start adding all the stuff sprint was to cheap or to dumb to add while removing all the bull they did add. i bet it wont take but an hour before an update.zip hits the forum after sprint releases it.
NOT going to unroot i love the custom roms

2.2 froyo question

Hey guys, just curious since I havent gotten a chance to use a rooted phone yet.
-When google comes out with 2.2 froyo update, are we able to update it from a rooted rom or does it have to be under stock condition?
+1. will be going from cyan to stock again when froyo comes out. but how?
You'd probably have to wait until someone post the stock rom of froyo, and then flash that.
Or flash on of the numerous stock ROMs that already exist, and get OTA like the rest of us.
Or wait for cyan for his release which I believe will be soon after the official release.
You will have to wait until either someone posts a stock 2.2 ROM that world with rooted phones or someone like cyanogen updates.
Once a different recovery is installed on the phone, the OTA system will never work again. Not even if you go back to stock.
This is a complete non issue. The stock 2.2 rom may very well be available to flash here before you recieve the ota if its a rolling release. If not it will be a close race. BTW, The ota looks for a stock officially signed recovery to install itself with, if you do not have one the ota will fail.

Just out of interest (I am not making any judgements), why do you want to go from CM to stock as opposed to a CM modded version of 2.2?
Or are you just assuming 2.2 will drop before CM has time to mod it so want to get on it asap?
ill just wait for cyano to release its froyo version...
I'd be willing to bet that the features present in 2.2 will reach a version of CM before they reach any non-rooted N1. I'm just saying... we already have some of the features currently, i.e. customizable trackball notifications.
that really just depends on when google pushes the sources of 2.2 into AOSP. so chances are that a stock 2.2 will be available sooner than a cyanogen 2.2, but it will be worth the wait

That's not true. I did a warranty replacement a while back and restored the phone to stock before sending it back. I used the SAPPIMG.zip method to restore the shipping ROM, recovery, and radio. After rebooting and setting up the phone, I was offered the OTA update and the OTA completed successfully. Being bootloader unlocked did not affect my ability to get OTA updates.
A little confusion here it seems and I will throw out my understanding. An ota will work if it does not have to access an officially signed recovery, if it does and does not find one it will fail. Once you have installed a custom recovery going back to the stock one will not help in this regard because it is no longer officially signed. 2.2 will require an officially signed recovery to install and everything I read says it will be seen, it will download, then it will fail to install. If this is incorrect than I look forward to learning more about this question as it keeps popping up over and over. I have yet to hear from any owner who was able to update from 2.0 to 2.1 after having installed a custom recovery, seems like there would have been many....

[Q] Should I root and install a custom ROM or wait for 2.2?

I'm tempted to root my phone, and install a ROM, BUT is it really worth it? Should I have more patience and wait for 2.2 ROMS? Im worried if I root it now, then 2.2 comes out Ill have to restore it back to stock. I also heard if you have a rooted phone and a major update (like froyo) comes out your pretty much bricked. Advice needed?

You can always flash back to stock if you don't like what you did to it. I end up flashing to stock, then flashing to a rom every other week or so to clean any messes with my phone. You'll learn how to do it right and how to fix. But start by reading the stickies, and asking the guys on irc if you have questions.
I'ld be more concerned that if you get the OTA before you root, that the update will close the exploit and make it impossible to root afterwards. If you root now, you may have to wait a day or two longer for Froyo. But if you plan to root after (or if you unroot for an OTA), you may have to wait a lot longer for a new root method.
Root and ROM. no question about it. We haven't even heard a release date or even a time frame for when the Fascinate will get it. I know everyone bashes me for this but the bottom line is no one has ever came out and said that the fascinate will get it on this date. Maybe the galaxy S is. But not the VERIZON FASCINATE

T-Mobile advertising 2.2 (Froyo) On Mytouch Slide.

Ok, Here is the link, T-mobile is advertising 2.2 Froyo on the Mytouch Slide....
http://mytouch.t-mobile.com/mytouch-3g-slide-features#/apps
WTF... They must be close to releasing it or they wouldn't advertise it on their website as running 2.2 Or is this just another trick from T-mobile to sell more Mytouch Slides
A doubt
i have a mytouch slide unlocked, and currently running froyo 2.2.1 by CM. i cant get an OTA update, but i really like the espresso ui along with the genius and other things. how can i get the t-mobile 2.2, if they release it and will it work on my phone.?

You would have to revert back to stock in order to get the OTA if/when it comes out. There really is no need though. You will find the latest updates here, probably before you would get them on your phone. CR is the best at getting us out the latest stuff and keeping everything updated.

Why in the world would you return to the restrictions of being on stock?
A rooted ver of the OTA is always made here in xda so theres no point in bother with stock, root gives you complete control over your phone and allows you to make it yours.
Just what I stated as above TO GET THE OEM OTA AND POST IT HERE. I'm well aware of rooting and S-Off I had both before going back to stock, re-rooting and S-offing again isn't that big of a deal. I did a nadroid backup before I went back to stock so I can have my phone back in short order.

um...You probably should have waited till they actually start sending out the OTA. Second, It doesnt come in a update.zip file so unless you know how to extract the complete file from your phone after it has been updated and then turn it into a update.zip you are going to be S.O.L.
It doesn't matter !

so i pointed out to him where he can get the 2.2.1 with epresso, not stock android.

unrooted and went back to stock, don't see gingerbread update.

I was runnings myms 2.2 with clockworkmod and I went back to stock by downloading the stock rom and when I go to update it says no updates available.
I'm wondering if maybe I didn't install a new stock rom or something is wrong.
You can just get a rooted version of the update from this site if you do the ota you will lose root.

When I heard it was out, I flashed back to the stock rom, and checked for it, but it said my system was up to date. After about a day, though, it asked me if I wanted to update to the new version. Which unfortunately wouldn't install for me. Which is fine, I like CM7 better than sense anyways.
If you haven't seen it yet, just wait a bit, it'll probably show up.

Don't take this the wrong way but I don't care about modding or hacking, stock android is just fine to me. I never tethered nor have I used anything that is a benefit of rooting. I just want a phone to be a phone.
It's not that serious to me, I kinda have other things a bit more important than changing roms and so forth.
Stock Android is perfectly fine to me.
geez, your making this harder than it has to be. you are already rooted. just download the rooted rom and be done with it. you will still be running a stock rom even though your rooted. if you do absolutely nothing with root u can still download and install the rooted stock rom and use it

It has all the stock apps and stuff. No mods or themes. No one said you need to.do all that stuff if you root. Rooting just gives you the option to do so.
