Powered USB hub. - Kindle Fire General

Which ones worked for you?
sent from the greezal's fire

I bought this one because I needed 2.0 power to all ports for the MIDI devices I have. It works well. Nice and cheap, plus it's the multi-TT mode which means your 2.0 devices won't drop to 1.1 when you plug in older devices, although I don't know if that even matters with the KF. I was considering buying a solar USB hub to test but I don't expect it to charge as much as a wall-charged hub.

Miro USB Car Charger?

Saw this bundle on Amazon http://www.amazon.ca/Skque-Premium-Protector-Earphone-Charger/dp/B006OIQC04/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&m=A3VAVEQC03JY97&s=generic&qid=1325865654&sr=1-15 and noticed that it included a micro usb car charger. Would this work with our tablets?
??? The manufacture says it will.
The a500 doesn't support usb charging, supposedly there will be an update to allow it.

Do you have a link to a source stating that there will be an update to allow it?
It doesn't make sense to me, because the hardware physically can't support it (USB can only deliver 5V, whereas the A500 wants 12V IIRC)
It won't work like stated before a micro usb charger won't have the juice to do it. When you plug in the micro usb the charge light does not come on. Not supported and I don't know of any update that will change that.
Update: I just actually clicked on your link and the whole bundle is suspect. The wall charger is even a micro usb. Won't work, perfect example of a company throwing together a cheap bundle to entice the consumer that he is getting a great deal. I bet the chargers aren't even 1000ma which would be the minimum need to charge our tablet if it supported it.
charging and running a 12v device thru a 5 v port.. IF acer figures this out or any other company as in the one the OP is posting..
This company will RULE THE WORLD. BY SOLVING THE ENERGY demand crises in the world... Getting a bit over double energy as you put into something...
Sheesh even a Lame Blonde chic figured this out the day I BOUGHT MY iconia. it Says 12V 1.5 a on my charger... First thing i looked at so i could set my CAR INVERTER . for my tablet.. But with the battery life of the iconia I nearly never need it.. I can howerver charge my cell phone from the usb port in my tablet..
OP no offence but some companies will use popular device names just to trigger sales Read fine print and there exact specs. on any such device..

Ok ..
Something just came to my mind.. .
I have a new notebook. that has a usb/sata port.. Now i know it required a special cable that is designed for a usb to sata hard drive to use it with a sata hard drive without a enclusure and it runs at the speed of a internal sata port.. when you connect a hard drive to this port . it shows up as a sata drive not a usb drive..
the drive i use is a 3.5 inch 2 tb hard disk that is 12v-5v..
so with this said. its actually pliable that this could work.. But im thinking our iconia does not have this type of usb port.. I will add the 12v usb /sata cable and hard drive will only work on that one usb port on my notebook. the others will not even register it.. If this is a device used in a usb/sata then connected to the Power port of the iconia.. there is a chance such a device COULD be created...
ok im rambling.. Because i DO NOT THINK THIS IS EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT.. most people do not even know this usb/sata shared technology exist....

Dont be sorry, it is very interesting input. I am quite annoyed though because I was actually pretty stoked about having a USB charger. I agree the battery life is pretty good on the Iconia but there are always those days where you forget to charge the thing before going to work. (Thats what got me looking on Amazon in the first place)
I am doubly annoyed that someone might actually buy this and get a big disappointment when the product actually arrives.
Very curious about this SATA / USB port though. Time for some google fu!
i read the manual from HP with not much said in there other then its called a. USB/e-sata port.
I do also know its usb 3.0 standard this notebook is the HP dm1-us3020 model.I think the z version of this notebook does not have this port.the notebook is based on the and Fusion CPU.and gets 7 plus hours batterylife with moderate use.
Charging it is another story.its I think 9 cell li 19.7 v charging brick spent 125.00 for car inverter for this thing grrrrrrrr.
OK im at hair salon and its my turn.
wish me luck.

here is tthe cable I use .not sure if its the same brand
http://www.amazon.com/eSATA-Combo-P...LHVI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325966252&sr=8-1
Yes that is the port.as I said above it will run a 3.5 hard drive connected with nothing more then a cheap USB to e-sata unmanaged.(no chips or resistores in cable) type of cable.for all I know all newer notebooks might have one.
I was just making a point that you could in theory charge your Iconia from this port to the Iconia power port.
As the hard drive requires12 vfrom my knowledge.but im not cutting my cable to try it.Don't ask Giggles.

Very interesting. According to wiki, laptop eSATAp ports deliver 5v and desktop eSATAp ports deliver 12v. Not sure where in the computer the extra v come from.
I don't have the charger with me so I don't know the specs but I'm wondering if a USB 3.0 to iconia power plug cable would hypothetically work?
Amazon item from op
I got very frustrated after looking around on amazon today for something diffrent.. Frustrated seeing this add for the product you talk about all over the iconia a500 searches on amazon.. So i emailed them about this product . giving them the specs of the a 500 along with a link to the required charger. I also did a review of the product warning anyone from buying this...
I suggest others do the same ITS JUST OUTRIGHT FRAUD...... the seller sent me a response stating the device will do what it says. well not for my iconia it will not..

Cheap powered USB hub

That's not a "powered" hub. By most definitions, a powered hub would utilize a separate power source like an AC adapter, so the attached devices can draw power from it rather than the host device. Something like this perhaps...

I don't have any experience with either product... just wanted to point out the difference.

The Belkin looks like a good choice. There are cheaper products, but I suggest paying the extra bucks for something with a name brand and reputation.
I've had mixed results with cheaper powered hubs. Some worked fine, but none of them for long. My most common problem with cheap hubs is that the USB ports get loose and stop making good connections with your devices.
I've had another odd problem with one of the cheaper ones. The 5v input from the included transformer was not correctly isolated from the 5v of the USB port that heads to the PC. When my PC was shut down, other USB devices on my PC would try to power up through the tiny transformer, which eventually killed the transformer, and was also the most likely reason I had a set of USB ports fail on that machine.
Anyway, what I'm saying is that my recomendation is to buy from a company with a reputation to protect, it's worth the extra few bucks.

Can you charge and mount USB at the same time with this thing?
The realization that there's only one USB port on this device made me wonder if it shared this limitation, and from what I've read, it does. Can anybody confirm this? I can't settle for rumors and stringing together nebulous conjectures. Once they appear in my local Best Buy/MicroCenter I'll be testing this myself, of course.
If anybody's got it, I'd really like to know that. That's kind of the deal-breaker for me. It was the biggest reason I didn't get the Venue 8 Pro (that, and lack of reliable video-out). I don't mind carrying a host cable around with me everywhere either, or the spare battery... or even a tiny USB hub. I just want to know that I can use USB and charge at the same time so I can have a very mobile "desktop" experience wherever I decide to bust out my tablet. No more damn Chromecast bugginess, no more damn finnicky MHL connectors.
I know that the Venue 8 Pro simply cannot do two at the same time; I tested this fact in the store by connecting a host cable, a power source (2.1amp rav power backup battery) and a USB thumb drive. Mounts just fine with a USB OTG cable, but will just not mount and charge at the same time.

Very few devices can. Most USB Hubs cannot backfeed power, so you cannot use USB host adapters to a powered USB hub to charge the tablet most of the time, regardless of if it actually supports charging while in host mode, there is a raspberry pi compatibility list which lists a few hubs which can or cannot backfeed power (the pi can be backpowered via its USB host ports but this is not recommended and can conflict with other inputs). Most tablets though require the D+ and D- wires in the USB connector to be shorted together to enter charging mode, otherwise they will only trickle charge (or not at all), with D+ and D- shorted you cannot transmit data. Turns it into a case of data or power only.
Frankly, you want the desktop experience, yet are purchasing something running 32 bit windows on an intel atom wih 2gb of RAM and either 32 or 64gb of eMMC storage. I think an i5 device would probably be more up your street, most of them have separate power supplies and USB host ports.

If you are referring to the thinkpad 2 10" tablet, that used a microUSB for charging and had a seperate full size USB host port (the micro USB was not host capable). The dell venue and lenovo thinkpad 8 both use microUSB for combined charge and host.
If the power and USB host ports are seperate then there is no issue. The issue arises when its a combined port which is what most of the atom tablets are opting for.

The cover works as a stand pretty well. As long as the surface inst too slippery you can put the stand on slightly different angles too.
It also is strong enough to work on vertical too.

What do you use it for? I'm considering selling my 8 inch LG G Pad for an 8 inch Windows 8 tab. I'm contemplating this or a refurbished Surface Pro for about the same price. Just wondering if Bay Trail is really a lot better than Clover trail. I had a ThinkPad Tablet 2 and it was God awful.

Picking up z4 from vzw today. Will test usb c to hdmi hub adapter as well as otg

Going to pick my z4 up from the vzw store today. Will test my usb c to hdmi hub adapter. Worked for my galaxy note. To bypass using dex so i could plug my phone mouse and keyboard to any hdmi tv. Got online for $11 worked great. Going to see if the z4 works for this and test out its otg capabilities today. Will let yall know
Also going to look into getting root. After i contact moto to see if we can get device on there bootloader unlock list
No go on the usb c to hdmi hub. Detects charging. But does not extend the display to the hdmi device. Tested on one of my tvs . Will test on my samsung smart but i doubt that makes a difference.
Regarding the bootloader unlock, are you saying it's possible that the VZ branded Z4 may be eligible through Moto's portal? I tried it and, as predicted, it failed. I just assumed all VZ phones are locked down.
I don't think any support MHL anymore as Miracast and Googlecast replaced it. Tried OTG and no worky. But, please prove me wrong.
Any luck on unlocking the bootloader? I've never had a Verizon phone but I came across this z4 practically brand new for a 100 bucks so I picked it up. If I knew that u couldn't unlock the bootloader I would have passed.
No dice on the bootloader. I emailed moto have heard nothing. No mhl no ucb c hub to hdmi . Its unfortunite i love this phone aside from that. Maybe if we bug the heck out of moto they will add it to there bootloader unlock. It worked for older vzw moto z devices. In other news I went to vzw paid $200 for the projector mod. A little disappointed. Not bright enough. At close distance maybe max of 40" its pretty decent. Only on a white surface with lights off.
detects charging, but doesn't actually charge
At least that's what the usb-c "charging bridge" I tried did. I am very disappointed, I can use the OTG keyboard and mouse through the usb-c adapter, the charge indicator came on... but no charge.. The battery ran down.
Is this what you found? I only tried one adapter.
I also discovered the moto Z4 is the only Android I've ever found a wired Xbox compatible controller to not work on OTG, the device shows up as a usb device but isn't recognized as a controller on this phone. ???

This may not be the place but I haven't seen a debloat thread specific to the z4. I ordered one today after the sammy a50 didn't support 1x or 3g. I've only owned a droid x, s3, and s5 cid15. All rooted and with custom roms. But I'm afraid no root or unlocked bootloader for the z4.
Even so, I know you can uninstall or disable apps for the current user on the device through adb. Have you guys done any debloating of the verizon crap thats installed on the z4 from vzw?
I'm sure it can be done with adb but I'm not sure how effective it is.. My understanding is that the user you uninstall the apps for will no longer load or run for that user.
One other question is can this device be themed with andromeda since it's fairly close to aosp from what I've read. If not can it be themed at all. Thanks all for your assistance.

Believe any. I recommend one that allows power draw to the phone, so your phone can be charged while using the hub. Usually higher the better (within reason). I spent ~50 for my hub a bit back, and it works wonderfully.

Startech, Anker or just a regular usb-c to display port or hdmi. They all work.
It is best to use a charging device, because the output of the mobile phone should not be enough. Specifically, look for it on Amazon.
