THISSSS is why samsung uses "cheap feeling" plastic builds lol - Galaxy S III General

so heres the story. it was on my kitchen table. my cat jumped up on the kitten table. the phone fell OFF the kitchen table. it landed on my wood flooring, and BAYYM. shattered like a christmas orniment. i can say the screen is fragile.. very different from my Galaxy S phones, which have been dropped numerous times, landed on concrete, and have dropped inside of a machine at work (lol). guess this is why samsung desides to make those "cheap feeling" light weight builds..
sigh. already ordered a replacement screen here ;The HTX One X

I believe the OP said that already LOL

Not sure what your implying......you dropped the phone, got unlucky and the screen cracked. It's more the design of the one x than the materials. The screen is similar to the lumia where the edges are curved but exposed.
Samsung and one x both use polycarbonate. If you dropped it on the back, Im pretty sure neither would suffer any blows. One x just has a matte coating and is unibody.
And the one x weighs less than the Sgs3 I believe by a few grams nothing noticeable. So not sure how you can imply light materials.

Yes lol you quoted that before i could SEE my mistake.......thanks for the info though Mr. Gamer

off topic from the one X.
As much people think plastic is cheap, they use this type of plastic for a reason.
I really think Samsung knows what they are doing. Consumers don't know half of the reasons why parts are chosen. The material scientist make their chose for a reason. They do test like these.

lol......and then there's you who gets his posts cleaned by mods. Surely you must be doing something wrong.
Tell me, drop a phone and it's not probability and chance the screen will crack. Surely if we go by the OP's statement. HTC using the same polycarbonate material implies Samsung's are just as easily to crack their screen. Is it not? Why don't you use your brain for once, instead of going around calling me a troll when I've probably owned more Samsung phones then you, clearly been around the Samsung forums and development more than you and a member longer than you.
It's HTC's design, when I had a galaxy nexus it was the first thing I said in the One X vs. Galaxy Nexus thread. The screen design is similar to the Nokia Lumia, where the edges are curved but they are exposed, if it falls and hits the edge in any way, it has a higher probability of cracking.
It's purely design, not Samsung choosing to use Polycarbonate when HTC is using Polycarbonate on the One X also.
Think and read before you speak please. Learn to spell also.

First of all I'M GETTING THE GS3, but this thread is ridiculous. The materials on the two phones are the same. Both phones use polycarbonate ( The GS3 is shinny and the ONE X is matte ) and Gorilla Glass 2. You were unlucky and this could happen to any phone if it landed the wrong way. XDA is getting worse every day! It seems like many iFans decided to try Android cause this brand loyalty in these forums is getting ridiculous! Why people can't accept that someone might like a phone which is not the same as their choice. The ONE X is a great phone too. We should be happy that the best phones in the market right now are Android phones. I miss the days when XDA was all about development and community spirit!

There's a lot of people that usually complain about why stuff looks the way they do or why couldn't the engineers put this and this in there.
What the chart shows is an example of a test dozens of engineers put together. We usually use programs and run experiments in all kinds of conditions to determine which materials are the best to use at the right price and will last the longest, etc and etc.
Just know even though the SGS3 uses a plastic case, it doesn't mean they didn't go through multiple materials and a selection process to make the case that they did. Sometimes the materials are chosen because they are recyclable and bio degradable etc...
Sometimes people need to realize that what they want isn't what they really need or want that's all.

Look at the button layout. It's exactly the same as the 4S. Hold button followed by 2 circles.
Look at the screen size, exactly the same as 4S, even I don't think they'd go miniature again when most phones at +/- 4.2"
Earpiece - exactly the same
Camera & LED flash - exactly the same position
Fruit logo and phone info on back - exactly the same position (if you've ever used an iphone)
The rear glass (and front glass if you're feeling brave) can be changed relatively easily, many friends have done it with different colours etc - this is just another different back for the phone.
Should I go on....

Anyone with some basic electronics knowledge can replace parts, which if not made by a very dedicated person, could probably be readily available from shady 3rd party retailers.

The renders, which were published by Chinese site iPhone中文网 (Google Translation, via MacOtakara), are based on rumors that have suggested the next iPhone will have a smaller dock, larger speakers and a metal back. While the original report was duped by the pictures, they originally stem from a Flickr user, who explained they were modeled in Rhinoceros 3D and are an authentic looking forgery.

Oh really? then we should start making cars completely of plastic if thats the case.
Before the SGS4 was announced they explained why they used plastic which should have been a clue that the SGS4 was going to be similar to all their previous devices. Don't like plastic? There are plenty of glass and metal options available. Since the SGS4 will be around for at least another 15 months *****ing that it's plastic is pretty futile. And everyone considering a SGS4 can either choose to deal with it or not. Rather than complaining, vote with your wallet and buy something else.

I just don't really feel like dropping a piece of plastic and having the thing shatter into million of pieces. A little unrealistic I know, but really? I don't care if they thing plastic does the best job, it obviously doesn't. It scratches, it's breakable. Sure HTC didn't do the best job of it either, but at least they used something that feels good/amazing in the palm of your hand.

I think they didn't want to update the look so people can familiarize with the brand better. People are beginning to recognize the Galaxy s3, and it will be easier for people to know the phone if it keeps a similar design. Sure, it could've looked a little more premium for once, but it's the software that's the most important, and they did a decent job with improvements and gimmicks that actually seem to work.

Not if it comes at the expense of microSD and battery *cough HTC*cough*.
I reaaaaaaaaaaally dont get all the plastic hate, most people place their phones in cases anyway, especially if they are made out of leet materials like glass or the fancy-peeling One S aluminium, which is even more stupid.
My GS3 survived w/o a case for almost a year now btw, and because those "cheap plastic" back covers are so uhh.. cheap, I can replace them anytime for minimal cost, I actually have 4 custom back covers just for variety.
Oh and I should have added "Power Button on the side" to OP as another pun at HTC but w/e.

[DISCUSSION] The black anodized One - original aluminum shows after fall?

Hello, I wanted to start discussion as I was wondering about a big problem in iPhone 5 (maybe One also).
So, as it seems silver is the "original" aluminum color. And the black is "anodized" - anodized could be great thing - until they fall on the ground.
In the case of black iPhone 5, it falls and shows original aluminum under anodized one. It is not a problem to users which change phones constantly. But I want to have the One for a longer time. And I really like the black
Nokia I think anodize aluminum deeply, and that's not an issue, but One?
Guess we'll have to wait to see some drop tests...
And please do not comment like "get the silver then" or "go buy the case"
See the black iPhone 5 damage (minimal thanks to aluminum, but shows original metal) - If damage is bigger it will be seen easier and be ugly...

from previous HTC devices like the Desire HD, Sensation, One V, HTC anodizes deeply, very deep in fact in case of Desire HD
however with one exception their black One S had a different micro oxidized finished which wasn't nearly as great
if you're not clumsy and takes care of your devices well, then get a black. otherwise get a silver to be safe.
on a scale of 1 to 10, i rate myself 9 out of 10 in taking care of all my gadgets. i can definitely say im safe with a black one.
I dropped my Xperia once in 10 months (edge damaged but not easily seen) - And if it was iPhone 5 it would be really ugly :\
But you see above iPhone is scratched and shows original metal, keys and phone in same pocket example :\
Someone found some black drop test?
well they failed with black anodization (micro arc) on the HTC one S, I own one, beautiful device, but don't look at the sharp edges, and especially around the USB connector, it got some unwanted silver accents. I always carry it in an original HTC slip Pouch, never dropped the bare phone.
The One S black is not anodized, its micro arc oxidized and hence the problem
a better example would be all their other phones and if you want black, its best to look for the black One V as reference
And One S was never intended to be expensive fpagship
There are conflicting reports about this.
To quote The Inquirer: http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/review/2254085/htc-one-review
Unlike the iPhone, the HTC One's aluminium casing feels like it's not quite as prone to scratches - and after throwing it in our bag that contained keys and pens, the One came out completely unscathed.

Thanks, that was quite a positive review (again). I was planning to get a black one and have changed my mind about a dozen times, they both look so good, but the black color scratching off was never a concern for me. I have some anodized aluminum flashlights which I keep one of in my pocket with keys all the time. That's because I won't put my phone in the same pocket as my keys, and still won't. Even so, the flashlights don't have any scratches that go through the finish.
Eagerly awaiting the US release...

Drop / Shock Tests

Friends, Will be updating this thread with drop and shock tests of the HTC ONE.
Here is one of the good ones I found, and if you come across more, please do mention them and I will add them into the OP for sure
damn that bloody glued speaker cover
most stupid idea ever
at least provide a way to clip it back in!
the One X in this test would have only lost its screen...
but yea this video confirms the back cover + frame are unibody....
they dented together bent together and never seperated
Oh man, I can see that speaker grille getting super annoying in future carelessness. Not looking forward to that!

here we can see the unibody back + plastic frame, they sustained the damage together and only in the extreme point of impact do we see slight seperation
the ground it fell on is really rough
still the front glued covers are absurdly stupid!
MAD at Speaker Covers
My One X and Desire HD surived very simliar falls without ever a flying part, not even the Desire HD plastic patches did ever fly (they snap in and not glued)!
but when i saw Jonas phone i was really worried this would happen and yup it does!
stupid glues should be banned from phone assmebly!
Is there a blog that would do the drop tests in at least a little bit scientific way? Because you can drop a phone 10 times on its back and nothing will happen but you need just one drop on the face to shatter the screen...
Screen looked fine but the dents were pretty bad.
At least on first drop the screen never cracked like the iPhone.
Deffo getting a cover! lol
nothing wrong with breaking or dents the ground its falling on is really rough
the one and only problem is the flying speaker covers
ERE! One thing I can't get my head around is how Nokia managed to construct the Lumia 920 to somehow withstand being launched about 20 meters through the air without breaking (and yes I know it's more of a lump) but how has no other manufacturer managed to emulate such tank like design?? Surely it can't simply be packing I mean the weight difference between the 920 (185g) and the One (143g) is really not that great a difference.....it's about the same as one of those little boxes of raisins.....And I can't see that being a defining difference between being damaged from hip height to being damaged from a throw.....Anyone think of how/why this is?

Nothing that a drop of superglue won't fix, so it's bad but not critically bad I'd say.

I assume you're looking for how many times a phone will land on its face out of the number of times dropped? A scientific test would require repetition, which I don't think any blog has the resources to do. Plus, when it comes down to it, you can't control how you drop your phone. I think it's enough to know that a full-on frontal drop will result in a cracked screen.
Soooo my concern is this.
Do you think even if we don't drop, this adhesive can go off in time? I mean can it fall by itself in time?

the One X and Desire HD are tank like as well, in case of the One X there are no covers, its full unibody as well, screen protected by metal frame
Note to self: Do not drop it. EVER.
These pics and videos of the damaged One are breaking my heart

Oh yes no doubting that the DHD is a tank, mine has been more then abused and laughed it off for the most part....Though not sure if you've seen the dop test of the Lumia 920. The bloke hits it across a car-park (or something) with a bit of wood and it doesn't brake. Some of the hits the phone takes would literally obliterate most others and he has to throw it full pelt, screen first in to a concrete pillar to break the screen lol.. I've literally not seen anything like it from a phone before. I'd love to know how they managed to make it quite so strong.....
(here's the link to show you if you've not seen it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3c8il_Q6SU .....and no I'm not bigging up the 920, I know it's a good phone but it has far more flaws than the One.....I'm just referring to it in regards to its construction)
actually i'm really pissed
and if this speaker cover bull**** is not improved in later batches, i might reconsider...first time ever i see on an HTC
and i meant One X, One S, One V, 8x, Explorer, Sensation, Evo 3D, Sensation XL, Desire HD, Desire, Nexus One, HD2
non of them had easily flying covers!
these drop tests were quite brutal , usually no one drops them like this and on concrete thrice.. but i think the phone is quite good still in terms of what really happened to it..
my heart was pumping when the one was being dropped, such a gorgeous device!
I instantly remembered Lumia920 drop test. They were unable to shatter the screen like that. Lumia is using Gorilla2 as well. Why the big difference?

It wont be improved unless they got some amazing glue. An impact like that will cause it to bend and fly off. Waiting for later batches wont improve that.

I never understood that.
People buying a phone because its aluminium and its oh so pretty and not plastic, and then put it in a (plastic) case which makes the whole thing look like a toy in a condom so it wont dent.

Does this thing have Gorilla Glass 2 or 3?

I can't find a straight answer anywhere on whether or not our beloved LG G2s have Gorilla Glass 2 or 3. Some say 3, some say 2. Corning says 2 on their site.
No idea wtf it has.
Can anyone confirm?

corning does say 2 on their website but most reviews and specs sheets contradict that, a vast amount of sites say 3. I read somewhere that corning glass is 3.
2. I doubt they would have it wrong on their own site.

I don't know but I'm pretty weary . and also relieved I got a screen protector on mine. After less than one day of being extremely careful I noticed 2 very very minor light scratches. I wouldn't have noticed them but when I was cleaning the screen with the microfiber they give you with the Spigen screen protectors I noticed them... like I said very small but they were scratches nonetheless. I had a optimus g pro that seemed to scrape up way easier than my note2 and previous devices.. or I may have just been really unlucky. If these have gorilla glass then I guess its exactly the same and it's my fault.. or if there's something different they may be weaker.

lol why? screenprotector is still best. As a single grain of sand can scratch all versions the same

You can ask http://www.corninggorillaglass.com/ how come they produce something that is not useful or needed and yet manage to sell it and survive on market?
If it doesn't matter why does it exist. Well you can call it delusion, but to me and millions of consumers it makes a difference
it exists so regular and less and less stuff can scratch it and to make it stronger. its pretty good at that. Your logicis flawed into thinking I said it was useless. Its not...
However a grain of sand can have a much higher hardness and thus scratch it.
No need pretending its invincible if it is not. Which is why I suggest get a screenprotector anyway

I totally agree. It's like having a vasectomy and thinking the Dr's expert opinion will protect you 100%.
I've owned all versions of gorilla glass(have several teen agers) and they all all scratch easily. Unless you never expose your phone to the inside of your pocket or the real world, you need a screen protector. IMO
My Gnex was case less, screen protector less and I carried it around in my pocket in West Texas for 2 years. West Texas blows hard silicone sand- and other bad stuff all the time. Its one of the worst weather places in the world! I also let my 3 year old son play with it and watch Thomas the train when he would get bored at Dr. office etc. I have a huge 'janitor would be proud' set of keys that I kept in my pocket with my phone. Ive drop kicked it 2 times on accident getting out of a deer stand...
http://www.weather.com/sports-rec/march-madness/Toughest-Weather-City-Tournament-20130315 (God created Lubbock to train the faithful....)
Needless I'll post some pictures of it with no noticeable scratches and only fine scratches that would annoy MONK and OCD people, but not a sane normal person. Maybe I'm lucky- but I also had an HTC incredible who fared the same over the same amount of time.
Point? IDK- maybe the curved screen made it less scratch prone? I did notice 2 small very fine scratches that were on my G2 when I placed the screen protector on it. I am currently rocking the Folio case- but I've got 2 coming in the mail, to try out a TPU and a knock off otterbox. I think that in my experience the glass on my phones have been pretty tough, and I didn't notice or care about the little scratches I would get. I have a feeling a lot of people need to get some fluvoxamine and chill...
lol thats like free facial scrubs daily nice
4th day of my g2 and i havent installed covers or screen protector.. still scratchless..
Edit: i saw a 1 hairline scratch today...
Im getting a screen protector tommorrow...
