Does this thing have Gorilla Glass 2 or 3? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I can't find a straight answer anywhere on whether or not our beloved LG G2s have Gorilla Glass 2 or 3. Some say 3, some say 2. Corning says 2 on their site.
No idea wtf it has.
Can anyone confirm?

corning does say 2 on their website but most reviews and specs sheets contradict that, a vast amount of sites say 3. I read somewhere that corning glass is 3.

2. I doubt they would have it wrong on their own site.

I don't know but I'm pretty weary . and also relieved I got a screen protector on mine. After less than one day of being extremely careful I noticed 2 very very minor light scratches. I wouldn't have noticed them but when I was cleaning the screen with the microfiber they give you with the Spigen screen protectors I noticed them... like I said very small but they were scratches nonetheless. I had a optimus g pro that seemed to scrape up way easier than my note2 and previous devices.. or I may have just been really unlucky. If these have gorilla glass then I guess its exactly the same and it's my fault.. or if there's something different they may be weaker.

You can ask http://www.corninggorillaglass.com/ how come they produce something that is not useful or needed and yet manage to sell it and survive on market?
If it doesn't matter why does it exist. Well you can call it delusion, but to me and millions of consumers it makes a difference

it exists so regular and less and less stuff can scratch it and to make it stronger. its pretty good at that. Your logicis flawed into thinking I said it was useless. Its not...
However a grain of sand can have a much higher hardness and thus scratch it.
No need pretending its invincible if it is not. Which is why I suggest get a screenprotector anyway

I totally agree. It's like having a vasectomy and thinking the Dr's expert opinion will protect you 100%.
I've owned all versions of gorilla glass(have several teen agers) and they all all scratch easily. Unless you never expose your phone to the inside of your pocket or the real world, you need a screen protector. IMO

My Gnex was case less, screen protector less and I carried it around in my pocket in West Texas for 2 years. West Texas blows hard silicone sand- and other bad stuff all the time. Its one of the worst weather places in the world! I also let my 3 year old son play with it and watch Thomas the train when he would get bored at Dr. office etc. I have a huge 'janitor would be proud' set of keys that I kept in my pocket with my phone. Ive drop kicked it 2 times on accident getting out of a deer stand...
http://www.weather.com/sports-rec/march-madness/Toughest-Weather-City-Tournament-20130315 (God created Lubbock to train the faithful....)
Needless I'll post some pictures of it with no noticeable scratches and only fine scratches that would annoy MONK and OCD people, but not a sane normal person. Maybe I'm lucky- but I also had an HTC incredible who fared the same over the same amount of time.
Point? IDK- maybe the curved screen made it less scratch prone? I did notice 2 small very fine scratches that were on my G2 when I placed the screen protector on it. I am currently rocking the Folio case- but I've got 2 coming in the mail, to try out a TPU and a knock off otterbox. I think that in my experience the glass on my phones have been pretty tough, and I didn't notice or care about the little scratches I would get. I have a feeling a lot of people need to get some fluvoxamine and chill...

lol thats like free facial scrubs daily nice

4th day of my g2 and i havent installed covers or screen protector.. still scratchless..
Edit: i saw a 1 hairline scratch today...
Im getting a screen protector tommorrow...

Maybe yours is. I have it now for 3 months. No protection, always in the pocket or on the table or wherever, but no scratch. Quite different from my previous Omnia 2, with a few big scratches after 2 weeks. Perhaps a diamond screen would be good for you.

What sort of pole were you pushed into?
If the pressure was dissipated over the whole screen surface - i.e., trapped between pole and your thigh - it'd seem to be the optimal condition to crack it, unfortunately.
My wife broke a PMP with Gorilla glass by sitting on an office chair with PMP in pocket... and her ass ain't big.

Lol, just a small one as big as say.. a leg, yes, it was dissipated, that why it broke i think. Well its off to samsung now, and im looking at a 140-150 euro bill. (well my mate is)
That would do it... Gorilla glass or not, there'll be a certain pressure which the screen can't take.

If it still works, he should consider himself lucky. Things like is always makes me glad, I'm safe than sorry. I'm going to have to consider SquareTrade after I get my screen protector & case.
So we can assume now that the material used by Samsung is not the same in terms of strength and durability as Gorilla Glass.

My recommendation get a semi hard rubber case takes a beating. I have never broke a screen in 25 years of having a phone. I did Have a Blackberry old Brick (big square ugly phone) I dropped it off a 40 ft roof and it bounced and the screen never broke......... Luck of the Irish I guess
Either way I have dropped alot of phones and the semi hard case seems to take the shock
Bummer man, probably 145usd for a screen assembly.........
Note hasn't even been out for that long so even if you don't have insure to cover it I'm pretty sure your still applicable to apply.
A device that big and heavy would really break easier than the smaller ones I guess.

It works perfect no body damage just the screen
Its not gorilla glass its just a thin piece of common glass. I am pretty sure it broke because it landed flat on the screen.
The problem with any glass screen isn't that they are "shatter" proof, but they are scratch resistant. Just about any piece of glass tinsel strength will resist a scratch (except for a diamond), but a sudden impact, especially on an edge will pretty much shatter it. The gorilla glass can flex, if you've seen the video, but I bet they never show anyone striking it on the edge. Even though in your event, it fell on the face, from the look of the photo, it landed on the edge first, even if just by a small amount.
I have a Dell Streak and the first thing I do before exiting my vehicle, is to make sure it is in the pouch before I get out of the car. My previous phones (HTC's) got dropped several times getting into/out of my car. I use to keep an otter box case on it, but they are so bulky, not many cases around for belt use.
I feel for you, but, I bet just about any large surface area piece of glass would do the same thing. Head over to the Dell Streak forum and you'll see a few broken glass streaks.

Topic on this already...
1. It's a scratch resistant, not drop proof.
2. Laws of physics. The center of gravity is focused on the front for these phones since they're so light and thin. Yes it's more likely to fall on it's front like a bowling ball on a stick thrown up.
3. Counter balance this with a case in the back.
4. Sucks to be you.
5. Use the search button next time.

While these guys are being harsh, there is some truth.
gorilla glass is meant to be excellent against scratches, not breaking. That it cracked is not one of its features.

Look on eBay then
If you want something that is fall resistant buy a Nokia Lumia when having one of those things you should worry about your feet that your phone. Of course Samsung S3 is a delicate creature that has to be tendered with great care. There many fall resistant cases but to be honest the best protection is safety. I don't see how anyone would like to have a bulk that is twice the normal phone. A normal barely there casemate and a screen protector would do well for everyday usage. Thought there was another from case mate again that included a hell lot of protection. It had two parts, one rubber and the other a normal tough case but really that made the phone look like a satellite phone.
Alright sorry I thought it was break proof according to the video it looked like it. Also, it's not a big deal I still have 14 days to get warranty it was my fault and I can admit it, no need to be so rude about how it's my fault.
As for videos, I don't read much into them because those are mostly staged and does not reflect what really happens.
I remember watching a Gorilla Glass 2 video on youtube showing no scratches on one of the new Sony phones; I just laughed because they person was scratching with razor blades and hitting with a hammer; showing no damage. The only problem with that is the camera does not pick up the micro scratches which one can see with the eye (which the user shows it with no scratches in the video). Eventually the video poster did crack the glass after repeatedly hitting with a hammer.
There was also another video of the same phone being dropped in a big puddle of water and also it being ran over with a jeep...! Perfectly intact ha ha!
I have the flip cover and I drop my phone about 4 feet got a little scratch on the back 'maybe I'm lucky? but I think it was my case?

[Q] How prone is Gorilla Glass to cracking?

I've dropped my Evo 4g many many times over the 2+ years I've owned it and besides a few small scratches, never had any issues. Should I expect the same of the Gorilla Glass 2 in the N4 or would getting insurance for the phone be worthwhile?
I was fine without insurance on my last phone, but not sure if there are other factors that would affect the chance of cracking (shape, weight, angle of hit ect...).
It won't
Used to drop my defy like a hundred times.
Got no pouch or screencover and kept it in my trouser pocket fir two years not the slightest scratch.
Gorilla glass ownz
_xoom2me _ICS _tapatalk
Gorilla glass 2 is the strongest glass on any smartphone right now but that doesn't mean it won't break. Im more worried about the glass not protected by the bezel. Looking at the pics of this phone the glass on the front goes right to the edge and not protected by the bezel at all. And to make it worst the edges curve up so if you drop this phone it will be more likely to land on the glass. The weakest part of any piece of glass is the edge so I'm a bit worried about this since i don't want to use a case on a phone this nice.
Glass is glass and it will break. I literally never drop phones, so it shouldn't be a problem for me, but if you are prone to dropping phones, don't be surprised if the glass does break or crack.
It seems like the glass on the back is prone to cracking/breaking though. Kellex from droid life cracked the back of his LG Optimus G review unit and apparently he didn't even drop it.
I just finished watching the Vergecast, and Josh Topolsky dropped his Nexus 4 review unit from a coffee table onto hardwood and it cracked the back.
You have been warned. lol

Here's a link to the AT&T review. If you don't want to read the entire thing, just scroll down a bit and you'll see pictures of the cracked back. Like i said in my op, Kellex didn't even drop the phone and the back cracked. As you can see in the pics, the back of the AT&T unit is almost identical to the Nexus 4
The link to the Vergecast is here. If you want to get to the part where he talks about cracking his Nexus 4, just fast forward to around 48:00.
If this is a common problem, this might make me hold off on buying one of these.

Only glass I've had crack is the glass on my playbook, when my 2 year old threw it. My galaxy tab is awesome, and the sensation gorilla glass with the curved edges has had no problems.
I do worry that the flat back would be more prone to breakage than the curved front.

Well.. I've had the phone for less than 3 full days and already cracked the rear glass. Good thing I have insurance.. but it seems s7 is extremely fragile.

someone reported the same thing less than an hour after getting it. I feel they could have designed around that a bit better. Tempered glass always does terrible in corners. A couple of MM extra metal at the corners could probably save a bunch of phones.
Understandable. I have this one http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01B1I6J0E?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00 and I'm worried it's not gonna be enough for this phone. Already have two different ones on order.

i've got the rugged armor and it seems it should be fine, so i assume this would be ok too
This happens EVERY time a new phone is released. If anyone doesn't believe me, just go look at the other phones and you will see the same warnings when they were released. ALL of these kinds of phones are fragile to a certain degree. Anyone going without a good case is taking extra risk. Even a good case is no guarantee. Think of it this way, would you carry a laptop around without protection, drop it, and expect it not to eventually get damaged? When the next iPhone or S8 is released next year, other threads like this will show up early after their releases. If you drop it 2 inches or 2 feet...there is always a chance there will be damage. I don't think anyone drops it on purpose. That being the situation, I would think it would be a good move to put it in a case and at least improve the odds from the beginning.
I feel how it hurts. Can you post pics?
Mind you I have never broken a phone this early. And I've had lots phones without cases. Notably note4, LG g2, g3, gs3. All which I dropped many times.
I'll post pictures soon.

From this vid s7 edge looked like it shouldn't happen so easily https://youtu.be/GU8S_BjByKU maybe edge is more durable?
But it's not so bad and guy from video claims that back cover replacement costs ~30$ but anyway it's insurance problem. I wonder will water resistance still be present after such repair
Pics.

An 18 inch drop did that?
I already opened a claim, I don't want any issues with waterproofing. But if Samsung repair says they can do it for cheaper I might go with that option.

Yep. I was sitting at dining table feeding my son. just slipped out of my pj pocket and hit the floor. That's why I'm surprised.

Thanks for posting. I'm definitely getting a case for it.
Isn't this what you people wanted? A premium feel at the expense of durability?
wow scary, first time ive heard of a phone ruined by being dropped now im definitely going to get a case and also place the phone inside 10 socks just in case

It's really not any more serious than chipping the paint or faux chrome on the edge bezels of previous Galaxy devices. I've owned the S3, S4 and S4 Mini. They look terrible after a year, even if you don't drop them. The S4 Mini is now over 2 years old and it's edge bezels look like the surface of the moon, and it's not from dropping it. That won't happen with the current generation of Galaxy devices.
At least the glass back on an S6 or S7 can be replaced to look like new. The edge bezels are part of the chassis. So, yeah, I'm fine with metal and glass.
i dropped my Xperia Z3 Compact a couple of times while standing, couple times onto wood floor, couple times onto tile. Never even scratched. Dropped it one day while at the pool onto this sort of uneven stone/sandstone kinda stuff from literally 2 or 3 INCHES, completely shattered the front glass. I mean total spiderweb destruction.
If just depends how you drop it and onto what surface.
Isn't it just bad luck either? I mean, I recently dropped my S6 and it also broke the glass (in the sense that the glass plate let loose and can now get dust under it). This was an innocent drop and it had falled quite a few times before already (before I was used to the slippery back of the thing) without any issues.
I've seen phones survive the most insane stuff only to get beaten by the bad luck of exactly hitting that part of the corner after a small drop.
Still sucks bigtime of course...
Lot of what's said is true. I still wonder how the waterproofing would be after repair.. of if the waterproofing would be OK with cracked glass.
I'm thinking the rear glass has no effect on the IP68 rating, when looking at the gs6 rear glass replacement video.
