[Q] A few questions about what microsoft might have forgotten inside windows8 - Windows 8 General

Hi,
First of all, I didn't try windows8 until now, I just downloaded the ISO but I still have to work for 7 hours so there's a lot of time left till installation.
Most of you might have already tried it, so I thought you could give me a few hints about things the internet doesn't seem to care to much.
1. Keyboard usability
I am an hardcore-keyboard-guy. I prefer using ALT+KEY and things like that for lots of shortcuts to work faster... It depends on what program I am, I touch the mouse once an hour.
Since the new UI seems to be very touchscreen related, did microsoft miss some keyboard-only-workflow stuff inside windows8 or is it still like in 7?
2. Drivers
As far as stated on various different german websites, there should be a good driver compatibility between windows 7 and windows 8, can you agree with that? I have a few devices that must work on every OS I am currently sitting on, maybe some of you have the same and can tell me:
- AMD Radeon HD 7770 (already found catalyst for win8, should be no problem)
- Refine Cutter (never worked under win7, using it inside an XP VM, would be awesome if re-usable in win8, also I am not beliving in it.)
- HP LaserJet 5 P (Printer, old as dinosaur... still works under 7... I hope support won't be dropped in windows8)
- Xerox WorkCentre M128 Pro (Another old printer, still working under windows7 with some issues...)
- LightScribe device (I belive, it will work.)
That's it, maybe I am lucky and there is some random people here using the same hardware...

I have an HP Deskjet 1050 and there are no drivers for it in Windows 8. I only got it a few months ago so it's a bit frustrating, but I imagine once it's officially released HP will get on top of it... or at least I hope so. I can't really comment on the others, but my 6970 is running along happily on the latest catalyst drivers. I can only imagine a newer card would be as well supported.

firstly drivers, most drivers will work ok, Win 7 drivers will in many cases work, the only thing I have found to be a pain just now is Audio drivers. I cant get my sound card to work at all despite the several different avenues ive tried.
If you have issues with win 7 drivers its usually because Win 8 version number doesn't appear in the INF files, in the past ive just added a new entry in to the INF file for Windows 8, then point that new entry to the windows 7 driver files. Its fairly straight forward stuff.....except for the bloody audio driver that is!!! GRR!
as for your first question
Keys are key in win 8 ( get it?!)
no seriously, everyone keeps banging on about Win 8 being touch this and that, but actually its fine without it, the whole concept of using a mouse is so cumbersome as you probably already know, If anything Win 8 has added to the keyboard abilities, using them makes it even better.

Knowing your keyboard shortcuts makes using win8 much easier to use. Mouse gestures like hovering over the side of the screen is more of a hassle compared to keyboard shortcuts.
I installed all the drivers I have on windows 7 to windows 8 and experienced no problems.

BF3 Working fine in Win8

In case anyone else is wondering.
Origin and Battlefield 3 are both working just fine in windows 8.
Is it more or less fps in w8?
I would say it's about the same. Maybe a little better, but I was on Vista. I get a good frame rate either way at 1920x1080
There should really be no reason that games and most other software should not work in windows 8 as it really is basically just windows 7 with a new start screen UI added over the top. The only thing that could cause errors is potentially drivers which might have to be optimised for windows 8. Windows 8 so far does a good job with legacy applications and the new start screen in terms of interference. Other the that good to know that it works

it is wrong to say it like that, but i may know what you were trying to say,but the main part of the OS is the metro start menu. desktop is treated as an application to run desktop software, not the other way around. thats like saying the ps2 is just a ps1 with the ps2 added on.

You would be surprised how different the two are. For instance have you tried to install and use MS Office 2010 on Win8? You would think it would work, it doesn't...
From what I have read 99% of things that work on windows 7 will work on windows 7 although some will require modification to play nice. Office 2010 works fine with windows 8 as I have tested it.
The analogy that ps2 is just a ps1 with a ps2 attached is actually correct. The ps2 did have a full functional ps1 housed within the console. Windows 8 is built on the windows 7 kernel with Win RT added in at least from what i know, so if windows 8 was using a different kernel and then emulating windows 7 like compatibility mode does for windows 7 with regards to windows xp then you would be correct. I could be wrong though.
For what i've experienced, win8 run every single program i've installed (and they are many). It's my main OS used daily since the release. If one ignore the "metro app" it looks like win7, but a way better in performance.
Anyway there's a thread regarding games compatibility/performance!

I need to know which OS will run the smoothest. (Videos, gaming, not freezing up, etc.).
I know that there are some people here that know the answer. I'd really appreciate it if any of you can help me out here. Thanks guys!
Also, which would be the fastest version? Home, Tablet, Professional, etc.?

Choose windows 7, Windows xp just doesn't bring what you want due to the lack of good touch input, windows vista is slow. Windows 7 and XP performance are almost the same..
Messing around a bit 7 is best. 8 is beta and weird, XP is old and out of date for touch and such, Vista is a lost cause.
I got a 2gb RAM module for $95 off ebay by trading in my 1gb module. Shop around, you can find great deals.
Soon I am going to load Ubuntu 12.04 on it, I think in the long run of things it might work best, I'll post my findings.
Thanks for your response man. I think I found the correct drivers for Windows 7.
It was a pack I found here on XDA. It's too bad... 99% of the links for the HTC Shift Drivers are all bad.
Actually. I have a question. Would you happen to know if I install Windows 7, will the Windows Mobile part still be there? And also, do you think you could link me to the correct thread where you can use the HTC Shift as a phone?
That would be extremely helpful.
This is where I got the Drivers for Windows 7. - http://tb.gtxhosting.ru/pub/htc_shift.zip
I hope that is right.
I also somehow found a Pack for Windows XP Drivers. Do you think this is right? Here's the link. - http://archive02.filefactory.com/dl...29dc3cea11302048b02728/n/drivers_shift_XP.rar
Let me know, I'd really appreciate it. I'm glad to see that there are still some people who post about this device. =D

Don't download, Just download the official "Vista" drivers from the HTC Site, and then search for the instructions "how to install windows 7 HTC Shift" you'll get a topic with all the steps you should take. But you do have to download a new wlan driver.
Thanks for your response Armazia. I'll try to look around for the Vista Drivers and the instruction for Windows 7. I tried to look earlier, but I couldn't find it for some reason. I'll give it a shot now.
I couldn't find anything on HTC's site. I found this though. Will this work? - http://driver-pro.com/related/english/hardware-drivers/?a=12226&hit=1
I will post up all the drivers I use once its done, Might be a while yet, working away from home starting tomorrow, wont be back till tues or weds.
I'll host it at Morninglion.com, my own website, so it will stay there.
Thanks so much! Your Great!
I should receive the HTC Shift I ordered by about that time too.

I think its not worth it, since it only has a 800 mhz processor.. You won't really benefit of 2 gb.
I find windows 8 very good, and very snappy. Try it! Its very nice on the huge touch screen.
Best regards
I like the speed and quickness on windows 8. If you disable windows defender and file indexing (search), it runs very quickly. I use the stardock windows 8 menu as well. Has anyone gotten the WM side to be recognized on Windows 8. I was able to get it working on Vista and Windows 7 but having trouble with 8. Anyone have any good incite?
Does anybody know if it is still possible to download the Developer Preview of Windows 8? Microsoft only has links to the Consumer Preview. (Will this still work via the installation guide found here?)
I just ordered a Shift from the 1saleaday/Ben's Outlet for $199. Eagerly awaiting my new gadget!
Success, With a little work you can get the WM part to be visible in Windows 8 and can transfer files.
Once you use the usbtool, on the windows side you might need to repair the network connection (leave wifi off) and it works.
You can also use the SIM card to surf with windows 8 as well.
need liberation files
friends,my shift is windows 7 and need liberation files .when downloaded it is being saved as text file and cant liberate .pls mail me to [email protected] all the files for liberation. And also my snapVUE not working in windows7,

Problem graphic card windows 8

Hi everybody, i have a big and noisy problem! Today i installed on my desktop pc the ultimate version of windows 8! It'a all great, but here is the problem: i have a ATI RADEON HD 4850 graphic card. I don't know why its fan speed is always at 100% unless i use softwares like speedfan and ohter... so after the installation of the new OS i download speedfan but the graphic cards there isn't.... so i tought it was a problem of drivers, and i installed the last catalyst center (it is possibile decide manually the speed fan even from it) but it can't work!!! it doens't open!!! what can i do???it is too noisy!
i've red somewhere that AMD drop the support for HD4000 series on windows 8... it mean that i ve no possibilities to regulate the speedfan???
no one??? (((((((((((
You made sure you have the right drivers? For my 5750 I think I have w7 drivers but they work find but on my C-60 APU (6290) they're windows 8 ones and CCC looks totally different.

can you try this link..it may help you..http://www2.ati.com/drivers/legacy/amd_catalyst_12.6_legacy_win8.exe
Ok i didnt have the fan problem, but i know how to get Catalyst open . what you have to do is uninstall ALL the drivers. Then, go installing drivers until you find one that catalyst works on (i think it was 9.11 or something). Once that is done, you can update the drivers WITHOUT updating catalyst. If you just update drivers, catalyst still opens perfectly

Thinking of buying a HTC shift

Hello i collect old phones like htc advantage and other winmo and nokia devices.
But the shift is still kinda expensive.
I have an oppurtunity to buy one for 100 euro.
Point is i like to play with those devices alot.
At the moment i am trying to get truevga and mods on the advantage.
But is the Shift still capable?
I mean 800mHz is quite underpowered. Will it play youtube at lets say 720p fullscreen?
I understand it isnt capable of full hd streamin.
And what about games.
i like to play older games anything from need for speed (up till underground so 1-6)
And emulators? especially n64 because its the heaviest one i am planning to use.
Its quite alot of money for such old device and on ebay i didnt find anything to compare the price with
so valuewise is it worth it? 100euro is like 115 dollar with todays course.
the device itself is practically unused but comes formatted so i have to install windows.
I do this alot on laptops and pcs. and i am also no stranger in flashing winmo and android so i dont expect to run into any problems if there is still support and i can find drivers and stufff
I hope some of my questions can be answered.
wow its really a low activity device
no one got any tips?
100 Euro is quite a good price. On eBay it's usually much more expensive.
One thing you have to keep in mind is the RAM size- you'll have to get a
214 pin 2GB to make Shift run nearly satisfying.
Like this one:
http://www.ebay.de/itm/2GB-DDR2-214...y-HTC-SHIFT-/190400263728?hash=item2c54bd7630
Unfortunately i have never found a 4GB RAM version.
Thx for reply
thats quite expensive for 2gb ram...
So can it run youtube...
i havent decided yet if i am gonna do it or not
it includes a dmg 01 gameboy.. so it makes it kinda tempting
i already have a broad collection of phones en pre tablet tablets
i will reply when i get it.
sooo i bought it.
Really nice device
didnt came with windows though
so i installed windows 7.
got the drivers working even with 5 year old threads here with dead links
Touchscreen is working
but wifi isnt. So i think the wifi was switched off in vista...
thats not my big issue it wasnt my plaaning to use the wifi because of the performance of this device.
So i will check that some other time.
What i do want to have solved is a bigger problem. I m trying to install some light games en emulators on there.
First up N64. Runs windowed. not great but playable but when i try to go fullscreen i get BSOD. 2times in a row and then windows wouldnt start so i had to run the startup repair. Now its working again. Just not in fullscreen...
Other problem is with retro city rampage this game isnt even 3d.
it seems to start but the moment it switches to fullscreen i get the BSOD instantly...
Is this a driver problem? i recall i have read somewhere that u shoudlnt update the intel gma driver but i could not find this post. and i dont know if i have done this or not i would need version numbers...
Maybe im 2years late ;P but i hope someone will know the answer.
in the meantime i have a GB DMG01 to play with and mod.
Is it such a legacy device that no one uses it anymore?
I have a Shift and I found Vista to be unusable compared to Ubuntu Hardy (8.04). I've heard better things about Win7 and even Win10, but at the end of the day, the machine has its hardware limits and at least for me, that precluded even Vista.
Hardy , through pof's magic, allows everything to run, even the 3G (if you have the SIM), and it's quite zippy. I don't game, but perhaps ubuntu (circa 2008) has enough games available. Of course, you could run Wine, but that can be a can of worms for certain MS software.
Though I run MS Word 97, HanDBase, and a couple of other MS apps without problem in Hardy.
Prolly best to stay away from heavy graphics. Maybe Leisure Suit Larry
Jake
I fixed the BSOD problem by reinstalling windows 7 and NOT installed the gpu driver update.
It runs like a breeze
GTA3 and vice city i can play on low settings but no lagg at al!
And the n64 emulator i get 60fps in fullscreen.
I would recommmend 7 to anyone with this device.
Only the wifi is not working because it was turned off in vista and i read its a hell of alot of work to turn it on without vista.
problem is i bought it without windows so i couldnt turn it on.
But its better for me saves alot off battery
This is pof's htc shift panel for Windows that controls wifi/bt/etc. I don't know if it works in Win7, but you can research to see if it's what you want before actually trying it out.

Jake
Hey man thx for the tip
will try this when i get home from work.
ill report later
Ok wow
i need some program called cygwin
if i try to open it i get cygwin1.dll is missing
so im working on it
i found the program wil install it tonite and report back
Excellent. I'll be glad to hear that it works.
Jake
Hmm cygwin installed without any problems.
But now it asks for cygioperm-0.dll when i try to launch it.
i need to install ioperm says the readme but it seems i cant find it...
This is some kind of addon right?
Huh, dunno what those files are. Here are the Vista drivers, etc:
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0BzqfCViUrpr6UkVkY2lTLUIxSGs&usp=sharing
For Vista, the shagctrl program does wifi/bt/etc. you could try installing that and see if that gives you the missing .dlls/etc. It may run on its own, I just don't know. I have Vista on a partition, the shagctrl works, but I never use Vista/Windows.
Jake
shagctrl doesnt work in windows 7
only for resolution siwtch.
i got the hsect from this google drive page u gave me.
its same same download i found.
but this is in the readme.

WINDOWS NOTES:
The windows version needs CYGWIN (http://cygwin.com) with "ioperm" support.
Open a cygwin shell and run "ioperm -i" to install the ioperm.sys driver.
when i type ioperm-i it doesnt recognize it as a legal command...
i am gonna try it tonite if i connect it to the internet with cable.
But otherwise i think i skipped a step somewhere.... will let u know.
I just run windows for the games.
its a pretty capable device for its specs.
GTA3 without problems.
Carmageddon tdr 2000
n64
all runs perfect
If you can't rebuild it, I suppose you could get a Hardy 8.04.1 (no higher) livecd, repartition and dual boot with Hardy (with pof's shagctrl) and Windows.
I don't believe you can install pof's shag with a livecd only (pof calls for a reboot), though MAYBE, you could install shag and only switch on wifi/bt without a reboot, I dunno.
Hardy is certainly snappier than Windows, but your needs don't seem to match what Hardy can do. Though dual booting is always cool.
Jake
Haha XD that is an option indeed.
But if i switch wifi on once i wouldnt be able to turn it off in windows right?
I want to preserve battery power whenever is necessary.
When i installed cygwin i noticed i could choose any packages and addons tobe installed
maybe i reinstall cygwin first and i can find this ioperm addon
Once wifi was turned on, I think you could disable its driver in Windows in the systray.
Ok i wil look into that.
First i keep trying to find ioperm for cygwin and how to add it
now when i open hsect it says cygwinioperm1.dll missing not exactly but close.
I dont get the option when i reintall cygwin. Also there isnt really a uninstall button... not in control panel not in the root folder.

XP Tips and Tricks

After years of running the wondrous pof's Hardy 8.04.1 Shift setup, I've gone back to XP. Mainly because Links2 (the fastest browser for this ancient hardware) no longer works with all sites due to its lack of security updates.
cygwin's Links2 2.14 for Windows has enough updated security, so one can visit any site. slimjet chrome browser for XP still syncs with google, but site-rendering is pretty glacial.
As usual, the sd card reader in XP is buggy, mostly due to its old 2002 driver that seems un-updatable. First, I've only gotten a 2GB-or-below card to be recognized. Secondly, the card has to be reinserted upon booting into XP and can also disappear upon resume-after-suspend. But the second issue is solved if one uses devcon.exe and a batch script disabling/reenabling the card driver:
Code:
@echo off
"C:\devcon.exe" disable =SDHost
timeout /t 2
"C:\devcon.exe" enable =SDHost
If anybody else is still using XP, it'd be interesting to hear any of your own workarounds.
I keep dragging my Shift out of mothballs and it's still one of the great niche devices.
Jake
I've only used Vista, Windows 7 and 10 on my HTC Shift, but now it is too slow with any of them so in the next few days, I'm planning on repurposing my Shift to become an offline retro-machine. Therefor I'm intending to install XP on it for the first time. I'll share my experiences on this forum. I'm intending to mostly use it for games and c64 emulation.
Did anyone manage to find Win XP drivers for the Shift?
Thanx

'fraid not.
XP runs well, and the sound works, but I couldn't get optimal screen resolution, and many programs and games (such as Halo, FSX and even basic C64 emulators) refuse to run due to missing drivers.
Since XP has not had security support for a long time, I don't connect XP to the internet, nor do I download any of the general XP driver bundles that are available.
So XP HTC Shift is kind-of useful but not as much as I had hoped. I'm thinking of going back to an offline Windows 7.
I uploaded a couple of HTC Shift Windows XP videos today on YouTube. Here are the links:
