[idea] PS3 controller hack/mod... need advice - Hardware Hacking General

so... the PS3 controller works with my and other android devices, but it's an "external" controller
i have a small idea that i have no idea how to excute in real life, so i look for advice
to sumerize it is one pic (better then words)
i want to somehow "split" the PS3 controller so i can put it on the side of the smartphone having it's pcb behind the phone.

LOL. A phone like that would just be annoying.

An easier and much less ridiculous looking option would be to have a holder integrated in to the controller so that you could mount the phone over the buttons.

It's been done. I've seen about 4 different variants of the same idea, here is one.
http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/43075/gametel-bluetooth-gamepad-fingerless-gaming
And here is another.
http://www.icontrolpad.com/
Additionally, just get yourself a PSP, Vita, or DS. The games are much better, and if you're going to carry around something like a ps3 controller or whatever, you might as well carry around a real gaming device.
(I used to carry a datel retro wiipad or a ps3 controller to play emulated games.....but trust me, ladies would much rather see you playing a PSP, and even that is a curse)

Seems like it would be better just to pick up an Xperia Play, no?

need something like this they would sell like crazy

If you're wanting to do the mod yourself...
I'd recommend instead of "splitting" the controller (which requires additional wires, soldering, and a new enclosure for the PCB), to take the other products' idea and make a "dock-like" style.
The only thing you would need to "mod" would be to add the dock foundation near the usb port of the controller, but it must accommodate the contours of the controller and the phone. And you would need to solder a converting usb plug (from the controller usb to your phone usb, which is most likely two different kinds). That way, whenever you slide your phone into the dock part, the soldered, converted usb plug automatically fits into your phone and the controller now supports the weight of your phone.

well got my PS3 controller today, and bought the sixaxes
right now i think to get a car mount for the gnote and mod it to the controller

What you need sir, is a lot of ducktape.

Seems like the only easy way for now. Splitting a controller would be intensely boring with a nice chance of failure, need augmented vision to really solve this issue....FTW

I bought one of these, http://www.amazon.com/Breffo-Spiderpodium-Stand-iPhone-Cellphone/dp/B003O1V5CY.
I use my Photon 4G with my Sixaxis controller on the bus just about every day. I found if you bend the legs too much right where they attach to the body, they will snap, and hang loosely. But I called Breffo, sent them my Amazon receipt, and they sent me a new one, no charge.
For me, it's the best solution.
I was using this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qw_UBLt-Ckk, but it eventually broke, and it was heavy as hell. The Breffo is lighter.

You should buy a Xperia Play, then you have an slide out-able controller and a real comfortable cellphone as well

Galaxy S2 Wiimote Gaming Holder

Hey guys,
I picked up a Galaxy S2 the other day with emulation in mind because of the huge screen, the power and the weight of the device. I got the phone, rooted it, installed the latest MIUI rom 1.7.8 which is fabulous apart from a few kinks. The phone is really responsive and fast and it was an awesome buy. After playing around with it a bit, i tried out some emulators. I found that games which don't require any reactions were playable on the device, and others which needed fast action were just really tough to play, megaman, sonic and mario for example. I bet your thinking "Mario? Action? lol!" well i mean action as in its slightly fast paced, you need to have 100% accuracy when playing the game for it to be effective and efficient on the device, which for me it was not i kept missing buttons and stuff, more importantly my hand covered the whole of mario so i couldn't see him which was a large downside.
So i decided to get the Wiimote working on the device, which is why in the end i rooted the device and installed MIUI because luckily the bluetooth stack for the rom supports the wiimote which is great. And like all the previous phones i had (Nexus One, Desire, iPhone 4) all have Wiimote support but that is no good for on the go playing, and tbh its only good when you have a stand for the phone and a good chair where you can watch the device while playing using the wiimote over bluetooth.
This in my eyes was not practical enough for playing comfortably, so i looked into something else, and discovered these:

At first glance you think "Thats clever!" and it is clever it gives a solution to having to hold the phone and the wiimote to play. But not being offensive to the creator/designer or anything but they aren't exactly pretty. I tried to make something too but it was a complete fail, it wasn't secure, it looked horrible and it wasn't detachable, so i came up with something better. I was trying to think of a material which was both durable, secure, strong and customisable enough to build a practical solution. Then it hit me: lego.
I present to you, the Galaxy S2 Wiimote Gaming Holder! It's made 100% out of lego (the structure, that is) and connects securely to to wiimote and the phone. The video will tell more.
Here is the link to the full gallery of pictures on my Dropbox account. Theres a total of 33 images to look through.
I hope you guys like this, I can imagine that lots of people would want one of these hehe. If you want one then post and we can sort something out. Theres a few reasons I posted this because I thought you guys would find this interesting and that this can be adapted for other phones as the bass structure is universal to any Wiimote. So there you go. Post comments, suggestions, views and ratings etc i'm eager for feedback
Haha! Classic!
Added the youtube video
how did you manage to pair the wiimote to the galaxy s2? everywhere i look, it says that it doesn't work.

Thats what I thought until i tried MIUI rom. It won't work on the stock roms or other roms based off the stock (thats an educated guess) as the bluetooth stack won't support it. But MIUI does and also CyanogenMOD when the nighties and final get released for this device.
I think the amazing thing here isn't your holder but that you found a way to get the Samsung Galaxy S II working with a Wiimote (no offence to your holder).
I'll have to put a new ROM on my phone so I can use the Classic Controller and the SNES Classic Controller .
Cool man,,,so does this work with all the games?? u know like gameloft's and other games??
I don't think so. But emulators usually allow to map hardware butons so I will be happy just with them
Technically it works with anything that can map hardware buttons, to my knowledge anyway.
have you seen this? hackaday.com/2010/07/29/super-simple-gaming-controller-for-android-or-iphone
it´s already done!
I've never seen that before, but it looks pretty sweet xD. I still prefer mine though. Lego is probably cheaper and much more detachable, and smaller. Nice find though ;p

Hey that's pretty cool. Is it solid? Thinking about the height / angle, where do you use it? (coffee table, computer desk etc)
the stand is adjustable so it will go from the coffee table to computer desk no prob and it is realy stable.
i can even rotate the screen and look at it in port mode if im reading or what not.
Could you possibly go more in depth with how you made this i really like it and wouod like to do one myself
That actually looks pretty nifty. I'd also like to see how you did it.
i will get more pictures up today so you can get a general idea of how it was made, it took like 6mins to make.

Sweet, thanks!
Looks like you Velcro-ed it onto an old PC monitor.
At first I was like, "whaaa?" -but the idea has grown on me.
Well done!
the fit one i jst cut 2 holes in the back of the orignal packaging and put the tabs on the top of the monitor stand in the holes and then glued the rest to the stand.
the 2nd one i glued te keyboard to a small monitor stand to make it look as if floating and to be able to use my mouse under it,
i like the 2nd stand better, and i shortened the usb cable for the keyboard since i dont need wire all over since the tab is sitting right ove it and it also has a usb hub for the wireless mouse and my iphone.
I love it!
Great work indeed. Love to see the DIY mods. I need to do this myself now. Thanks or sharing it.
i think im going to make a book style case for it now.
LOL you stole my idea... I have an old book that is big enough to encase the tab. I'm going to hollow out the pages and glue them together and make some sort of latch/magnetic closure to keep it secure. I think I wanna find a push-n-lock type latch so I just close it and snap it closed, and when I wanna open I squeeze it and it pops open. Still undecided on the locking mechanism but I'll figure something out
I was going to do the same hollow the book and glue pages then I was going to drill 2 holes for magnets and a metal plate a thin one in the cover to keep it closed.
I have not had time to work on it though I'm modding my Mac mini.
My version
I took a different approach:
The black box is the tablet in its case. The monitor is an HP 1850 and it is connected via hdmi with an HP hdmi/vga adapter. The keyboard is a bluetooth from HP's Touchpad fire sale. $25 for the hdmi/vga and $20 for the keyboard.
The monitor I switch on and off with my Acer netbook.
The picture is pretty crappy, but you get what you pay for.

It's a bare face lie. Just because something says it can do that doesn't mean it will work or be practical
I know for a fact it wont work because the Xperia play is to weak of a device to do it natively you would have to use software decoding and cause major lag not to mention huge battery drain
In the end if you want TV out. buy a Droid X. the best smart phone ever made

You're both wrong
Thats not a WiFi to HDMI Dongle. Its a mini Roku box. It only streams stuff from the Internet over WiFi. Like Netflix and Hulu, etc.
And Hogwarts, a long post about how another phone is better and to just use that is just about as useless as tits on a bull. If we wanted another phone we would have gotten one, but we like this phone because it has a game pad. We don't care about the Droid X or any other phone.

That is truely awesome I Wonder if there are docking stations out that let you connect both å hdmi screen AND a mouse and keyboard?
I love this idea and it is clever of canonical to ride on the back of the success of Android.
But I'm not sure how I would use it. When I use my computer (which has oneric) I also want to able to use my phone separately.
Perhaps a better solution for me would be to have a standard Ubuntu install that gains phone powers when the phone is docked. It would make apps like airdroid obsolete.
I totally see how other people will have a use for this and I hope it's a huge success.
It's great news

If you have the dock w/ hdmi out, just use a bluetooth keyboard and mouse or a keyboard w/ built in trackpad. Then pair up bluetooth headphones in case you get a call so you don't lose your desktop. That'd be the easiest imo.

On Ubuntu we have this requirement:
HDMI: video out with secondary frame buffer device
The Note have this secundary buffer?
Because the HDMI is mirror mode by default.
Anyone with technical knowledge can do a test?
I searched and found this information from another phone:
Primary frame buffer:
/dev/graphics/fb0
Secundary:
/dev/graphics/fb1
Tnks all.
i was thrilled to see this, but would sure love to also occasionally run it while not docked (you know... like a laptop or tablet...). i realize they probably did this due to battery life concerns or something, but hey, why rule it out?
Is our note compatible with this? I do not see a HDMI out!

CTRLR holding a 7" tablet

Hi guys,
Been wanting to do this for a long time
Here it is... what a bad boy!!
The tablet is a cheapish chinese mali400 2GBram with hdmi out (hyundai T7s) , I bough instead of the ouya, sooo glad I did to, definitely getting my monies worth!
I got the same apps/emulators setup on here as the MOJO.... obviously it doesn't play as nice, but does okay
Been playing N64, MK4 is smooth, GE 007 and Dest. Durby both playable but laggy (9-30ps).
It's kinda heavy holding it, close to 1kilo as a guess.
It's not to bad if upright and balanced, but when angeled the weight of the tablet is noticeable.
Overall, feels comfortable with the controller, like in front of the TV
It's sturdy but there's a tiny bit of play at the bottom, even with the screw on tight... it's really testing the CTRLR's build quality here! lol
This is da shiz! Very cool,
I did photos as I put it together.. it's just fine rope and a small L bracket with tape wraped around it.
I'll blog it one day soonish..
