[Discussion]What and Why should we port from S3 {+ ported stuff} - Galaxy S II General

Ok guys,
Samsung's new flagship, the Galaxy S III, was released yesterday.
As I saw the new UI my first thought was "I want this this and this for my S2!"
So what are your thoughts...
New TouchWiz?
Only the Lockscreen with App Shortcuts?
Only the "nature" animations?
Ported stuff (yet)
TouchWiz UX - Here
S-Voice (fixed = no build.prop needed!) - Here (Download)
Accu Weather Widget - Here (Download)
PopUp Play (just a solution) - Here
will add the remaining stuff later...

I kinda like the new touchwiz. Not sure if its out for the GS2 atm, but if it's not, I'm sure it will get ported back to the GS2 by a kind developer (maybe as a whole launcher).

All that nature stuff is bs. Who are they marketing for? 50 year old wemon?
I'd like the stay awake feature, perhaps the voice control for driving, seems a lot better than the current one.

Will add a poll later this Day...

Hehe, I was thinking of that kind of topic when I see yours
TW? Hum I'm not sure when you came from AOSP, pure Google experience that you want this
S-Blablabla? For example S-Voice: yes! All the S-blablabla are really interesting, the smartphone become really smart with these stuff, so I think this is where the S3 is great for us
If we can port these stuff, why should we buy a new S3? It only has a quadcore and à 720p Screen, and everybody knows that for the moment our Dualcore are correct...Until the S4
But another problem... the S3 has a bigger battery and I think the S-blabla can drain our battery really fast because they use the hardware (like the front cam) in background...So do we need a sort of S2 with S3 stuff but a dramatic battery life?

Id like a full port of everything lol
GOOGLE stuff r better then TW of SGS2 for ICS but not for GB (SAMSUNG adds so maney stuff that users that try AOSP allways ask why cant i find X and Y that i used to have in stock)
and now they done it again
the new TW looks better then GOOGLE stock and with TW stuff in it its better then the GOOGLE original

S-voice , TouchWiz Nature UX with all stuff and water-like lockscreen
p.s. - port of everything posible ))

I wouldnt have thought this would even need to be discussed, of course these bits and bobs are going to be ported to ROMS, shouldnt be too difficult either as its the same chipset, just another two cpu's strapped on.

What I am interested in with this Thread is, why people want especially "this" feature
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA

For those who are disappointed because of the spec. I'd say just go away.
Samsung realized that pushing hardware is enough for android now( it's really useless since every phones from other market brings the similar specs.)
so put some great effort to bring out the best user experiences with all those new cool features.
I don't think we will be able to port any functionality but S voice since i heard it fetches data from server.

The whole ROM, the new TW is nice (i still dont like it much, but it's better than the GS2 one), i love all the new features especially stay awake function and the camera improvement.

If possible, I would like every new feature. (even the touchwiz ui)
but most of all the S voice to go hands free.

Touchwiz
The touchwiz looks way better than the one on the gs2. S voice functions not so much till it completely understand natural language. On the whole yeah pushing the specs not that high is a good move and better yet focus on their feel and look

I'm sick of everyone saying I want aosp or cm9 unless u can get all the neat touch wiz features on them ill take touchwiz anyday even the current one. I hope this gets ported to my s2.

native, non-hacky exFAT.

S VOICE & the lockscreen. Other things are hardware related. Not expecting anything else

HTC Sense Vs TouchWiz (what a difference)

Coming from HTC Desire & HTC Desire HD to Samsung Galaxy S 2, there is only one think i realize. Whatever HTC lacks in hardware, it more than makes up for it in software. HTC Sync works flawlessly. You want to convert into usb? no problem. Integration with contacts? works out of the box. I am stuck here for at least 2 hrs trying to make my new mobile to sync with Kies, with no luck. Before it turned into a USB, now not even that. (and yes i know about the debugging option). Same with software, linking is not as efficient, TW not as customizable, resulting in downloading 3rd party apps to do the things that you took for granted with HTC. So far, excluding hardware, I am really disappointed with my new purchase :/
I also came across from a Desire - HTC Sync was a pile of crap, just like Kies when it's not working. When Kies works, it's waay better, not that I bother using that either - everything just syncs to my Google account(s).
As for Sense vs TW, I admit the contacts linking/integration is far better in Sense, but as for one being more "customisable" than the other, nonsense - neither interface is particularly customisable, other than widgets, which I think you're referring to. Sense had some nice ones included, but TW has too. The only one I miss from Sense is the combined clock/weather one, but you can get something which looks almost as good using the digital clock and Accuweather widgets.
That's what I first though when I exchanged my desire for a galaxy s about a year ago. You'll get used to and when you do, you will start to appreciate how good the galaxy s2 is in the other areas.
I did miss sence after switching but now I don't look back especially with the super amoled screen!
i had a desire and desire z
hate sense
i love the new touchwiz. not even using go launcher any more
Always try to find a way to sync over a google services. nothing is so easy an comfortable than syncing with google on an android.
i just love how it shows all my podcasts when i download google listen and i'm good to go. i know its simple, but it just works

To me Tw is the lightest skins..it's almost stock but better.

tw gives closest to stock android experience. Thank god samsung don't use anything like sense or blur.
Sense is just too heavy for me.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
i honestly hate sense ui , its a ram hog , its a battery drainer , its more complex then it needs to be and to be honest for me it is just a waste of time
give me a plain android o/s or touchwiz anyday
i actually prefer go launcher to any of them but sense ui for me is just annoying overkill with a few nice weather animations
if i wanted sense ui i would have bought the sensastion but i wanted a phone that was based on power not one based on a pretty o/s that is a resource hog
why not stop neing disapointed and just sell the sgs2 and buy a sensation?? job done you can then be a happy person again
I love TW 4 and I use the stock launcher as well ...however it would be awesome to see Sense on this beautiful display - The eyecandy that Sense has is great
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
I had sense on my Nexus One and while I tried it for a while I simply found it to be too heavily modded. Obviously it works for some but TW has been a pleasant, more stock experience so far (Coming from launcher pro). If I ever go back to HTC I'll be making sure an AOSP based rom is available before hand
Sense is something like UI overhaul of whole android. You may like it, but it is not android experience at all (except you can launch android apps).
TW is also too heavy for me, but except weird mail app it leaves android logic in place.
Black fact is, that you will have hard times to find anyone calling himself a "touchwiz hater", but you can definitely find a lot of Sense haters (take a look on any HTC related forum).
This makes your argumentation problematic and thereby very subjective, but I understand that not everyone have same feeling about HTC -> Sammy migration as me.
//
Edit
Because we are on android, you can try other UI called MIUI. I found it really nice and polished. There are some features I don't like, but its worth try IMO.

+1 i don't necessarily hate HTC Sense but definitely better off without it and everything you've said is spot on.
OP said himself it's eye candy and already added battery drain, RAM hogger by other user.
Meaningless thread IMO.

Ill b happy with sense 2.1. Not 3. I don't care what sensation owners tell you, rooted or not, the sensation lags worse than my aging og droid.
Meh... TW4 is okay. Pretty standard rom. Not too heavily modified like Sense, but not too bare like stock, just in the middle. Firstly,I love Sense's eye candy . I'm not a big fan of TW4. Using MIUI and that was the best thing I've ever done.

Sensation may lag, but the evo 3D is speed demon. I love sense so much, its so clean and useful for me. I love the notification bar layout, the polished widgets, the awesome text selection quick look up utility, and just how everything is so intergrated.
I had the epic 4g galaxy S phone and i hated it. Touchwiz on it was absolutely awful for me. Such an ugly ui on froyo.
Now with that said,i am still going to be switching to sprints version of the galaxy s2 come September 16th in hopes that touchwiz has improved since its last iteration.
Sense and TouchWiz both are very nice imho. Sense is SO integrated and clean and a perfected shot at a well made Android experience. TouchWiz is also nice, and I love TW 4.0. I have the launcher for whenever I feel like having a TouchWiz... touch... (lol) to my phone. Sense's widgets, themed overlay, etc., make it a very good experience. But WAY too heavy and cumbersome.
And whoever said Sensations lag... you must be extremely dense. Both the Sensation and EVO 3D are so blazing fast it's unbelievable. And on AOSP ROMs? I hit 4500 on quad easy. Sense is what makes the phone lag, not the phone itself.

What are you looking forward to?

Ok I saw ics like most and im somewhat excited by the possibility of this update on the sgs2.
Now rather than focussing on ports, dev issues, etc. How about we talk about what were looking forward to the most?
Personally I've always found the ui of android lacking compared to its piers like iOS and WP7. My personal interest is in the new look, im running the excellent theme by vertimus and its made using the phone more enjoyable (odd I know) I think options like folders on the homescreens, and even the handling of the running apps makes the ui seem far more user friendly.
my second point I like is the facial unlock, i've never liked unlocking phone via codes or patterns, one people can learn them, and second there labourius
So i'll ask once DO NOT START RANTING ABOUT THE PORT, DEMANDING, ETC. JUST TALK ABOUT WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO.
moderators if you think this is a bad post feel free to shut it down, and ill hold tongue re ics til a later time, id also suggest if some derails this topic u ban them, as a warning..
So what you looking forward to?

Also you guys have any views on the colour swap google have introduced, i mean green for how long now? and were switching to a colour which i'd call cyan... cyanogen?

I think iOS has a good interface for a toy with that app drawer and nothing more where you don't even have widgets and you have to go to settings to enable or disable wifi, etc.
Now its about android or wp7 and yes... a real improvement for the intarface is wellcome.
To be honest, I am more than satisfied with my sgs 2 right now. However I will say I do look forward to hardware acceleration. I might not see the difference, but its still appreciated. Also maybe some system improvements would be nice so android would be more efficient at handling resources.
Quite a lot actually...
The camera interface and multitude of extra features that ICS has on offer.
Not much of TW. I mean TW has got better, but is still not in Sense's league (which actualy is pretty big resource hog, the reason why htc phones have never had good battery life). I wouldn't extra software tweaks and additional apps (bloatware..), but keep it non obtrusive.
Keep it as close to stock in terms of visual overlay. Stock ICS does look amazing.
Better battery management, no android os bug.
Better audio quality in video recording.
Better optimised browser and tabbed browsing. All of us do use third party browsers but an excellent stock browser wont hurt. Not everyone is a nerd and we do expect some things to be good , out of the box.
Steer clear of trying to copy ios.. (Sammy you know what I am talking about).
Loads of expectations but well that is just me.
I'm excited about the new multitasking, launcher, and redesigned UI and Widgets.

I am looking forward to Linux kernel 3. Efficiency Improvements. Better games with joystick support. Word like spell check throughout UI. Even smoother graphics. Kick ass mobile platform besting multi tasking. Data usage control like a BOSS.
Am waiting to see what Samsung does to ICS. I feel with touchwiz 4 they did an awesome job.

Honestly, this phone is close to perfect, as was my Android-running HD2 before it, but anything that improves battery life is particularly appreciated on the sgs2... I know its the old conundrum of battery tech not improving at a time of touchscreen frenzy, but a phone is a phone - something you occasionally need to depend on - and 24 hours does not cut it.

I'm looking forward to what the manufacturers are going to do...
What is HTC going to do with sense, what about Touchwiz, Motoblur etc etc?
The ICS UI/launcher looks great and my question is: Does it it need further modification by those companies?
I'm looking forward to rubbing my iphone using friends noses in the dirt!
Nah, just the smoothness and overall optimized speed and look of the ui. Not too big a fan of touchwiz ui though! We'll see.....

It seems a lot of users are unaware that touchwiz is hardware accelerated, including the stock browser. I underclock my sgs2 to 500mhz and its just as smooth and slick as default 1200mhz, no difference what so ever. If you use other launchers, you will notice the difference big time. Only really need the extra power for graphically demanding games like Shadowgun and Blood and Glory, and Flash player.

The extra power for graphically demanding games isn't coming in the form of ICS. For that we need an improved GPU which unfortunately won't be until the sgs3 is released. That being said, try Siyah kernel, you can overclock the GPU and have no graphical issues.

I'm hoping ICS reduces OS fragmentation. Sadly though, I fear it will only lead to more of it.
Improved battery management. Really, I don't ask for much.

[Q] is anyone working to get a CyanogenMod 7 or 9 for GTab 7.7 ?

i'm looking forward to see CM9 or even CM7 in this beauty to unlock its full potential and ... be free from TouchWiz
Well, I would see CM7 as big step down from the stock 3.2 OS. And, I doubt there will be a CM9 until Samsung releases an ICS update. So, maybe by May?
I think the release of ics will be near to the release of sgs2 ics .

Samsung won't issue a ICS for the original Tab but there is already a version working for it (although not final yet)
The issue is more about having a base large enough of 7.7 users and developers to make it happen, which probably won't be really soon given the fact it;s not sold yet in the US and in many other counties
That's one of the reasons why I am not in a hurry yet to replace my original Tab

Pretty much depends on whether they want to sell this beautiful device. If they don't want to sell it I would go with Q2, if they do, I would hurry up otherwise this thing will be born dead. No rational being would consider an old OS device when there are newer ones in the market (which will definitely happen before the end of Q1)
And it is pretty much clear this device needs ICS badly. If a user in a store will compare the 1.4 ghz tab to a 1.2 GHz Transformer Prime it is evident he should go with the Prime now.
Also I would say that for tablets an update is much more important than for a phone. Web browsing for example, is boosted enormously on ICS. Considering that much users buy a tablet for web browsing it would be a no brainer to boost this 1.4 GHz of 7.7" amoled goodness
Am I the only one who isn't all that bothered by TouchWiz? Not the launcher of course, I've never been a fan of that... However, once you replace the home launcher with something better, TouchWiz isn't really that bad. I mean, the quick launch apps on the menu bar is a brilliant idea, and I use it all the time! It's awesome now that you can customize the Samsung apps there too now. Now all the quick launch bar needs is support to launch any app/widget you want, and it'd be perfect!
Now don't get me wrong, I love me some vanilla Android, and you can bet your toes that if CM9 becomes available for the 7.7, I'll be at least trying it out to see how it compares. That said, I already know I will be missing that quick launch bar... Oh if only there were something similar, but for an AOSP!! Then again, once you reach that point, it's more a question of which would you prefer: A TouchWiz themed AOSP, or an AOSP themed TouchWiz?

Agreed. Just replace the launcher and you have something really good. I actually like some of the Samsung's apps (Typically the email client is fantastic and I haven't found anything that comes close to t on the market). It is the same for many other Samsung proprietary apps that work only with the Touchwiz workframe. And I regret these apps...
HOWEVER performance wise (and battery life wise) CM or other variants (I am using BOCA) are just night and day with Samsung's ROMs... Maybe the 7.7 has so much horsepower that it doesn't matter too much (although I am sure at one stage it will). But clearly for the original Tab I just cannot go back to Samsung base ROM even though I regret the apps...
Would be fantastic if I could instal ICS on it right now. Is it already possible to instal CM9 on the tab 7.7? Or maybe a "leaked" version from Samsung. Hope touchwize wont lag as much as it does now. Device is rooted.

I'm currently one of those
i'm so drooling for the Asus Prime, but... the only thing that is keeping me away from purchasing the Asus Prime, is the nVidia Tegra, which is ironic as it's the most powerful Quad core out there right now
but nVidia has bad reputation in Android for NEVER releasing source codes, no source codes = cheesy 3rd development support
and also because the Prime lacks OLED display
I might change my mind if i see CM9 for the ASUS Prime, but for now Gtab 7.7 is pretty much the nicest thing on the market with the largest SAMOLED+ HD display which is what i'm shopping for.
i'm indifferent about TW or CM
TW bonus is really on all the extra hardware codecs it comes with it, which is great if you plan to watch a lot of video on the tablet
CM on the other hand lacks those extra codecs, being AOSP based, but it makes up for it for all the build in features, settings, customization, and power
of course TW based ROMs can be OC too, but there's always all that extra stuff that are not really wanted included, all the stuff that i usually end up replacing with 3rd party apps or prefer the ones that comes from stock AOSP better.

Good points indeed! Normally I'm pretty well set as long as I have root and CWM. Most of my personal customization's don't go beyond changing the launcher anyway. I do play a lot of video's so I guess that's why I'm happy with TW.
Now that I do have both root and CWM, I'm a pretty happy camper!
At this point, a TW ICS can only make things better (provided I can still keep CWM and Root of course!)

pure ICS on galaxy s3?

Lol at least give it a chance before making such a claim. Use it when it comes out then we can say if it is shyte... There are other launchers like apex and etc..
ok good point, i like the concepts though like if you are messaging then put to your ear and it calls, but im talking about the pure visual aspect of it, the icons look like they come from a 2001 nokia colour phone
Icons are always customisable though with root access. I always wonder why people complain about a UI or skin when it can always be changed or removed.
Ive never used any of the previous versions of touchwiz for more than a few minutes at a time on friends' phones but have always preferred it over the other mfr UIs ive tried. Its actually one of the things im looking forward to with this.

pure aosp will take atleast a month or 2, team hacksung have not yet received enough donations for getting the mobile yet.
and guys the term "touchwiz" not only mentions the launcher but mentions the whole load of softwares customized by samsung like, fm radio, music player, camera app etc etc.

Not the entire UI.. little clips here and there but the fact is NONE of us have it and NONE of us have actually used the new Touchwiz UI. Its not just an icon pack

i don't want AOSP on it. It's damn boring. NO more vanilla for me. And the Nexus program is an epic fail, NOT the first to get updates.
I always use Go Launcher but will run with TW on the S3 to see how I like
What's wrong with TouchWiz, I would rank it second after TimeScape of Sony (dont like HTC Sense)
And I would give TouchWiz 4.0 the crown
vanilla rocks!
i got a warning for swearing, sorry for swearing
Pure ICS is definitely coming to the S3. Some developers have already said it.

Uh, yes, the Nexus lines ARE the first to get updates... Well, the GSM variants anyway. Don't whine about having a Nexus and not getting updates fast when you're on a stupid CDMA network with their closed source radio driver crap.
Look aosp is cool, but i am that type of human that i will hardly live with only one type of ui for more than two months, first there are themes and than its big jump (like tw->cm9 or cm9->MIUI....)....so i expect i will try to stick with stock as long as possible and than go out and try some modifications

Im going to change just one thing , I square icons at the bottom to stock ics, and that's it. Love the drop down toggles. And some of the touchwize apps I'll just not use.

I couldn't agree more to this!!!
No more carrier delays for me... and I really look forward to PURE AOSP! The closest I ever got to that was with CM 7 resp. CM 9 on my S2 and Nook tablets... and I liked it a lot!
Certainly better than st*pid HTC Sense..!
Can't wait for next week to arrive!!!!!!
why would you use a feature`less software like stock ics? i had galaxy nexus and it was boring ... tw may have bloat but it has nice features ... if you want stock buy google phone if you want sense buy htc ... simple...
plus if you look in the app drawer is ics stock like
It's a matter of preference. look at the stock ICS E-mail, Contacts and messaging apps. a combination of a Beautiful, modern design with the maximum possible functionality. It just looks, feels and works so well, exactly how a modern UI should. Google really hit the ball out of the park with holo.
Now look at the TW ones - they're basically the same FroYo ones used in the previous galaxies - they don't have that stremlined, modern look of stock ICS. They look dated and ancient and do not feel like ICS at all. The messaging app especially. Black background with grey borders and ugly buttons - and yellow and cyan chat bubbles.. seriously samsung?
having said that, TW does have a very, very good launcher - very smooth and very flexible - i have no issues with that. The TW UX launcher is even better in that regard. it's the core apps that piss me off because they look ugly and dated.

why do so many of you hate TouchWiz? TouchWiz is amazing!

i see thread after thread just spewing out hate for touchwiz..
how can so many of you not like touchwiz, lemme correct that *HATE touchwiz... i realize its the hip thing to do, to hate touchwiz, and you somehow think it makes you look pro, or cool, or like you know what youre talking about, but touchwiz rocks.. most of you havent even seen what the alternative is, you just hate it cause everyone else does.
do you realize losing touchwiz loses:
*built in screen capture by pressing home+lock
*task manager built into long press
*swipe left/right to call/text in contacts/dialer/texts
*toggles in drop down menu
*amazing UI in camera/file manager/ music player
*ability to adjust display options, beyond what stock roms are capable of
*swype
* ability to adjust brightness by moving dropbar back and forth
* the option to use the actual touchwiz launcher
* Divx, Xvid, and .avi support out of the box, as well as other formats supported only by samsung
*S-Voice
*Eye Tracking
*Smart Stay, keeps the screen awake while you're looking at the display
*Popup Play
its not like having a stock rom gives you anything in place of these.. if you dont like the touchwiz launcher, you can install another one, nova, apex, go, adw, adw ex, i cant see why ppl are soo determined to get rid of it, and have nothing in its place. would you really rather have no options, in place of where you DID have options?
answer now is not anymore or don't hate it that much anymore.
I don't hate the touch wize, I hate the touchwize launcher and i miss all my touchwize apps, I actually wish I could have to touchwize framework on my custome ics rom just with a another launcher

If you dont change to an AOSP ROM, only change the launcher, you dont loose those features, right
The bulk of what you mention can be built in to custom ROMs

What phone do you have
I was in CyanogenMod before ICS, now back to Samsung based ROM, but I replaced the bad AOSP apps, like phone and SMS with others from the market as nice or nicer than TW´s

I really am hoping that I will like the new version of Touchwiz! If I can change the icons in the dock and on the homescreens as well as the size of the grid on the homescreen, then I see myself using it on my phone. If I can't do both of those things, then I'm using Apex.
I don't want to stare at the default dock icons all day long, they are way too cartoony and colorful for me. But yeah, if I can change ALL the icons in Touchwiz, slap a nice and dark wallpaper on there and get some Metrostation/Minimal Text goodness going... I would LOVE to use Touchwiz, because I always try to install as few third-party apps and stuff on my phones. I'm just afraid that it won't allow me the level of customization that I want. Lucky for me Android is about options, so I can have an alternative launcher on my phone within 2 minutes if I want.
So for me it's not about trying to be cool and hip. Those things come naturally to me.
And correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think ditching Touchwiz will affect like half of the things on your little list there?
EDIT: Task manager, swiping left/right in contacts, drop down toggles, camera UI, swype, brightness control, popup play and certainly Divx, Xvid, and .avi support... I don't see those being controlled by what launcher you use? I could be wrong though
Most of that stuff isnt anything to do with TW at all. Most of it is in stand alone apps that will work whether you use TW as a launcher or not. I will be using Apex launcher and i will still have all the Samsung extras.
AOSP, Cyanogen and AOKP ROMS are over rated, most are slower than custom ROMs based on Samsung stock, they have missing or broken features and are often unstable. I dont see the point in getting a phone like the S3 and putting inferior software on it, why not just buy a Nexus to start with? The best ROMs are custom ROMs based on stock, optimised and free of the truly useless bloat.

OP why do you feel the need to post the same thread here? Is it because no-one's posted for a few days on the one you've got in the S2 forum

The codec support is definatly the best and I love the small things they added like the customizable battery percentage, extended toggles in the pulldown, newsticker on the lockscreen, shortcuts on the lockscreen etc.. it seems like they let you customize alot and I think you can really tell they hired someone from the CM team.
The new touchwiz also looks pretty good, I really like that they use 5 icons now. The appdrawer looks great and the plain black pulldown also looks nice. I think it looks very grown up now and even though it's using popping colours I don't find it too tacky or cartoonish like many others. I can't stand the "buhuhuhu they ruined the beauty of stock ICS buhhuhuhuhu" comments anymore it might not be "eyecandy" like sense which btw. I find extremly ugly but it is super smooth, compareable with iOS, it's minimalistic and not too overloaded.
The browser in gingerbread was crushing pretty much everything. It kinda sucks on ICS ATM, but seeing some videos it seems like it's fixed on the S3. Chrome comes close but it's still so buggy and lacks features. Samsung still has the smoothest browser, thats for sure...

Absolutely not true! CM is probably one of the most stable aosp roms. It will provide you (after some time passed for development) with superior performance, battery life and sometimes options like ui themes etc.
This is fact, not just user experience... but for everyone the roms they prefer the most. Personally looking forward to have dualboot and cm9 as primary rom...
