Hello All! Sprint Questions just ask - Networking

Hey everyone just joined after a couple years of using xda, I have used so much and just wanted to try to give back what I can in terms of my knowledge. I am a manager for Sprint and always have the inside scoop for phones, lte, etc... So if you have any questions or problems with a Sprint phone or service fire away!

What is the easiest way to get out of my contract without having to pay the early termination fees?

When will Sprint get the Note?

Turn on affilated networks/roaming and make a ton of phone calls/stream video like the end of the world has come or stream pandora non stop. Hit about 2k minutes and like 8gigs + of data and you will get flagged for sure. They will give you a warning the first month but keep doing it and your contract will be terminated w/o any termination fee's. You will lose your phone number this way but its the easiest way to get outta contract. If your desperate you could call in and complain like 10 times a day and they might let you out but its never a for sure thing.
Honestly if it were me I would wait until the network vision is complete as Sprint will have 36,000 towers just like Verizon and AT&T does now. But with Sprint all towers will use 3 signals simultaneously so you will see some great results. I hear horror stories everyday about AT&T and Verizon so beware.

I haven't heard any news on the note, but I do know we will get the galaxy s3 before much longer. Wouldn't surprise me if the note never came to Sprint but if I was a betting man and it were to come to Sprint you would see it around the same time as the s3.

@cstargel, truth is I am going to go the route of unlocked Galaxy Nexus plus T-Mobile unlimited sim plan! Sprint coverage is fairly terrible in my area, but I do mostly use verizon... Hint... Really it's going to be about saving money in the long run, but who can resist an unlocked developer device?

Ditto. I'm on the old contract with a $140 fee. I've had below-advertised 3G speeds (as well as a few outages) pretty much everywhere here in NYC, since December 2010. I kept getting the "tower upgrades"/"tower outages" run around. I just wanna leave a switch to a cheap prepaid service because I'm in college and it's frustrating paying for useless data.

I was aware of that method, but I don't want to lose my number. Are there any alternatives?

I know the new EVO LTE starts preorders on the 7th but do you know the actual release date for it yet?

Hey cstargel5487,
I am currently in a sprint contract which does not end till august. I want to keep my current number and possibly port it to verizon wireless. If I do port it from their service, will sprint still charge the termination fee? If not I would like to know another way of getting out of the contract while still keeping the number.
Thank You

If you port now, yes. If you port in August when your contract expires, no.

When will Phoenix AZ get 4G
I live in Phoenix Arizona. I'm sure you know that Phoenix is Huge. In fact, it is the 5th largest city in the US. We apparently are the red headed step child when it comes to 4G service. I just reviewed your newly posted coverage map and compared it to a list of the nation’s largest cities. Here is what I found:
1. New York City – 4G, Nov 2011
2. Los Angeles – 4G, Nov 2011
3. Chicago – 4G, Nov 2009
4. Houston – 4G, March 2010
5. Phoenix – Nope
6. Philadelphia – 4G, Dec 2009
7. San Antonio – 4G, Dec 2009
8. San Diego – Nope
9. Dallas - 4G, Dec 2009
10. San Jose – 4G, Dec 2010
Why do we not have 4G? About 18 months ago I upgraded to the HTC Evo 4G. My thought was that since I lived in a huge city like Phoenix, my chances were pretty good that I would get to use my 4G service. Well, I’m happy to say that last month I finally got to use my 4G service. All I had to do was fly 3000 miles to the island of Maui. With 144,000 people, Maui has only 4% the amount of people compared to 3.25 million people in the metropolitan area of Phoenix. Maui received 4G in December of 2009.
So why not us? How much money is Sprint losing by not getting 4G into Phoenix? How many customers are they losing?

[Q] Getting out of Sprint Contract?

Hello even tho i love my EVO i can't stand the internet speeds I am getting with sprint service, when i first bought this phone i was planing on using it as my main isp, but that is out of the questing with the 0.20mb dl i usually get, well just now i made a speedtest and i got 0.16mb download and 1.43mb upload...
tmobile didn't had 3g here in PR till like a month ago i already had evo since july 6.
but now tmobile is rolling 4g here with speeds of around 3mb dl stable (tested on vibrant phone)
I am thinking on moving back to tmobile once the mytouch 4g launches, but yeah I am on contract and looking for the possibilities i have without needing to pay 190 to get off contract and another 200 i assume for mytouch 4g.
is there any way around? is there a pay plan for the penalty
should i try sell the EVO on ebay? (never sold anything on ebay just bought some stuff)
any recomandations..
ohh yeah that mytouch 4g is looking sexy.
Options:
1 - Wait until they modify something service-related. You'll have your 30 day window to quit without ETF
2 - Move to an area that has no service for Sprint
3 - There is some website that can take over your contract but I dont recall whats the name of it... it basically allows you to dump your contract on someone else
4 - Pay up and be done with it?

That's about the best and only suggestions I would give too.
Except #3 doesn't have to be done through a website. As long as you can find someone who is willing to take over your plan your account can be transferred to the other party without you having to pay any ETF. I don't know if the phone has to transfer along with it but if it does just sell your phone to the party accepting your plan.
Sell your phone on craigslist or ebay pay the cancel fee.
Have you flashed the latest radio? That seemed to help my speeds. I take it you aren't in a Sprint 4G market yet.
I feel your pain on the internet speeds man. I'm in the detroit area and the speeds here during the day are abysmal. I've thought about canceling but the cheap plan plus my discount is keeping me right with sprint.
As the others suggested, try to find someone who could take over your plan our just suck it up and pay the cancellation fee.

If you went this route, they'd need proof that the subscriber did in fact perish. Usually it is a faxed copy of the death certificate.
Yeah, I love my Evo...but my 3G speeds are TERRIBLE, with that being said I highly doubt my area will be getting 4G anytime soon if ever. I have wifi but that's only useful when I'm home, which blows. And to the person who posted about them changing a terms of service agreement, or whatever, the 30 day window is activated again when that happens?

Almost on 2 4g phone, with no 4g

They should atleast give us the option of not paying th$10 a month.
I thought 4g would have been out at least a year after the 4g phone came out.
Disappointing....

i have a ant uncles cousin brother 4 times removed that works for sprint that told me that 4g was going to be in my area launch day .... i think he was was yanking my chain ...
Got a little story to tell you about Sprint and this bogus "4G service fee".
My son had a Moment. The phone was locked up in a safe on an Army base where he wasn't going to be able to use it but once a week during the 6 months of his basic training so I cancelled the insurance. Apparently, they don't give special considerations to our military servicemen & women. Halfway through his training he gets hurt and sent home on a medical discharge. Now he is home and of course the phone gets broken. Since we aren't eligible for yearly upgrades anymore I had to reactivate my old Hero for him. I finish the activation on the webpage and it tells me there will be an additional 10.00 monthly fee for reactivating this phone. I called Sprint to find out why.
They tell me that this 10.00 is for premium data and applies to ALL new smartphones activated after April 1st. I told them that this isn't a NEW smartphone (it's actually a downgrade for him) and that it isn't NEW service. It didn't matter. I told the woman on the phone that when I activated my Evo I was told that 10.00 was for 4G service and the Hero isn't capable of 4G service. She told me that I'd been lied to. Her actual words were "I don't know why they told you that". She said that the additional 10.00 wasn't ever for 4G service, it's to keep my plan for that phone unlimited.
I argued about it. I told her that everything that kept me on Sprint was now gone and told them that I would not be renewing any of my contracts. She wished me luck on my upcoming Verizon service.
So yeah. Quit *****in about that 4G fee. That isn't what they're calling it anymore and according to the girl on the phone that night, that was never what it was for.
10 characters.
When I got my EVO a year ago I enjoyed 4G in Cleveland, Columbus and Pittsburgh. I go to these cities once a month. In the last few months the signals have been weaker and drop out every few minutes. I have taken to switching back to 3G just to get constant data service. Sad
Since the fee now applies to all smartphones, regardless of 4G or not, your argument doesn't hold up. It might have before (debatable), but not now.
All I know is that sprint's 4g is garbage lol, the 3G is great though
I'd I wasn't on a serop act I wouldn't even consider sprint at full rate,
The difference in data speed and the ability to actually use it while moving lol, between verizon, tmobile and spring is too stark

If you have a sero plan they do charge an additional $10 for 4G phones only, so in my case the argument does indeed hold up.

Not sure if this is the same guy, but another insider says late July so it sounds right. Will they mutilate the front of the phone at all or will it have the same 3 button setup as the international version?

$350 w/contract with a mail in rebate. So Samsung's not only raised the retail prices they've raised the wholesale prices too. The battery should last about an hour and a half with Wi-Max.

Isn't it pretty typical for most carrier's new high end phones to say something around $350 or $300 and have an instant (supposed MIR) rebates bringing them to $200 or $250?
However I would think the AT&T version would show up first, as it went through FCC already. They probably held on to releasing it because of the Infuse, and didn't want the two devices to compete.
I guess it depends on the rebate. The yet-to-be launched EVO 3D on Sprint is $199 without the need for a rebate. So it seems the SGS2 will be Sprint's new flagship.

Is the Photon being delayed? How does that affect the SGS2?
A dev just found all the AT&T LTE settings in KG1. Their LTE network will be up in few weeks and they have no phone for it. I'm guessing because of AT&T's financial value to Samsung (vs. Sprint) no one will launch the SGS2 before AT&T. Sprint's got plenty of 4G phones and AT&T's got none (not counting fake-4G). There's typically a period of exclusivity ranging from 30-90 days which means other carriers would follow in the Fall. But someone else posted Samsung's going for a simultaneous launch on all three carriers (T-Mobile's screwed). Just some stuff to think about...

But does that mean the SGS2 will be out in July or in August for AT&T? I am so sick and tired of this lame iPhone.
AT&T announced they're launching their LTE network in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Atlanta and Chicago, this Summer. The phone's already passed through the FCC and now there's LTE code in the latest firmware. Knowing Samsung wants the phone deployed fast in the U.S. I'd be surprised if it was longer than 60 days from now. I'd bet we'll start hearing rumors and seeing sightings soon as AT&T is already testing their LTE network in Texas. All of this is still just a guess.
WDM I wonder if your source confused the Samsung Conquer 4G, that is being released on 7/24 with the Within. FWIW the Photon 4G isn't being delayed, it just passed through the FCC and will be out in a few weeks.

Here's some more confirmation on the July 24th release date.

Makes perfect "sense" because it allows Evo 3D owners, like myself to trade in. Although this date is cutting it VERY CLOSE for those who got the Evo 3D on launch.

[Q] Leaving Sprint

Hello,
For starters, my apologies if this has been asked before. I took a quick look at the "similar threads" but none seemed to hit this angle.
I signed a two-year contract with Sprint last June. I bought the EVO 4G (thus my post on this particular forum) and paid $299 for it (forgot to mail in the rebate - my fault.) I live in Tulsa, OK, and we weren't on the list of cities with 4G at the time, but Sprint was rapidly expanding its "the nation's first 4G network" and I wanted to be a part of that. Plus I'd come from AT&T and an iPhone 3G, and I'd had enough of Apple.
Anyway, searches on Sprint's site regarding WiMax coming to Tulsa always resulted in a "give us your e-mail address and we'll let you know!" page. So I gave them my e-mail address, lived with Sprint's just-ok 3G speeds combined with spotty reception, and I waited. Don't-bother-trying-to-stream-music-in-the-car-or-use-data-at-some-intersections spotty. Often couldn't send a text message from my one-level, ground floor office full of windows in the middle of town, spotty. It'd be worth it when they flipped on that WiMax switch.
Well, fast forward 15 months, and I've put in my e-mail address about a dozen times. Verizon's LTE network has been live here for months. AT&T's faux-G HSPA+ is available here. Hell, T-Mobile's is even live here according to their website, though I don't know anyone on T-Mobile. Still, I've waited.
Recently I read that Sprint's future direction is LTE-Advanced. That sounds lovely, but I've read that WiMax will "continue to be supported for several more years due to the contract with Clearwire." Sprint would be stupid to dump more money into the WiMax network, but where does that leave me? The customer who paid an ETF to jump on the "first 4G network" and buy the "iPhone killer running Android?" I don't have WiMax now and it's clear that I never will. My phone doesn't have an LTE radio so that does me no good. I bought a ticket to ride a train that never left the station.
/rant
For the record, I never voiced my reception complaints with Sprint. Always thought it'd get better. Lesson learned.
Anyway, the point of all this - in light of Sprint's announcement that they're moving forward with LTE-Advanced (and, one assumes, not dumping money into also building out WiMax) - do you think I'd have grounds to demand the ETF be waived? I almost feel like I've been subject to a bait-and-switch, except they just kept the bait and never gave me anything else.
Many people don't realize that the salespeople layered on a whole bunch of "4G will be here in a couple of months..." stories when peddling the EVO 4G around launch time....Especially with the $10 4G tax that came with it....(now a moot point since the 4G tax got relabeled a $10 "smartphone" tax).
I was told that Omaha was "next on the list", "eminent", "in the pre-roll out" phase, etc. etc. etc. It never happened.
I have been with Sprint for over 10 years....And in the space of the last year and a half, I have seen them go South BIG TIME....In more ways than I would like to elaborate here.
And "unlimited" is their last perk....Well guess what, unlimited 10-25kbps (downtown Omaha) is nothing to write home about folks.

In short you wont be able to pull this. 4G is considered a feature... as long as you have regular service Sprint is doing its part on the contract... now if the calls drop like crazy and you dont get any signal you might have a way out..
revol.epic said:
i like your theory. However Sprint will say in fact you do have access to 4g wimax if you go to any city that has wimax like denver, colorado. They may also point out that you knew when you bought the phone that you did not have 4g and that unless their was in writing in your contract that 4g wimax service would be available by a certain date then you may not have a leg to stand on. You can try to start a class action suit and see what happens....

CAS are completely and utterly useless. The only ones who benefit from these are the lawyers who get paid in the thousands or even millions while the ppl they represent not only get a rate hike (hey someone has to foot the bill for the amount the company paid to the lawyers or did you think the stockholders would be happy to know their money was used to pay off the suit?) but they get a measly coupon for like 10% off any accessory or a $2 credit and no noticeable change to the terms they were trying to fight against.
If you really want to make a difference all you need is to get out of Sprint either by paying the ETF or waiting patiently for another 'considerable' change to the contract's terms as they seem to pop every 6 months or so and spread the word...
I know. I, along with thousands, if not millions are in this sanger boat as you. Got mine Nov 2010. Was promised 4g by march, nothing. Then it was july, nothing. Then end of summer, nothing. I had about written it off then I heard about the lte network. So I won't have 4g for maybe another year. Eh, whatever. We can ***** all we want, its not going to make things happen any faster. Would be great if 3g was as fast as it used to be to make the wait easier. Its either wait it out or go pay out the ass for verizon or att, neither of which are worth the price IMO, especially att. Guess I'll just wait like everyone else.

Yes, if they change the terms of your contract you get the opportunity to get out with no ETF. I don't think they have changed any contract terms recently though.

Well if you want to opt out of the contract you should try the PRL mod it lets you roam on verizons towers and sprint wont like that and will cancel ur contract if you dont mind.
Or just wait for LightSquared LTE its gonna be the best of all .
Heres some videos to keep your hopes up. which should be up by mid 2012.

I just talked to Sprint about lousy 3g speeds here in Kansas City Missouri. My contract is done in February, and so am I. Verizon here I come.

I am pretty disgusted with Sprint as well. I live in Omaha, NE. I have a 4G signal about 2 miles from my apartment but they won't flip the switch to allow the whole city to have it. Verizon has had 4G LTE in Lincoln and Omaha since September. This is beyond unacceptable, its retarded. It amazes me that they want to alienate their small customer base in the Midwest, especially since they are based out of Overland Park, KS. Since they decided to spend money on Apple and the iPhone instead of carry through with their promise of WiMax in 2011, I hope they are bought out by Verizon or that they go bankrupt. I have terrible data speeds and I am flat out sick of Sprint's lying.
You might have to pay more for att or Verizon but I rather pay for better service then deal with sprints lousy service I'm done. I would pay only $10.00 more with att so not breaking the bank.

Will it take 2 more years for Sprint to bring their new LTE to most of the country?
Just wanted to let you guys know I called sprint and got the $10 data charge waived for one month due to slow data speeds. I had them look at my data usage over the last couple months and told them the drop was due to slow speeds.

This has me so mad @ Sprint. When my contract is up this spring, I'm not sure if I'll be staying with Sprint.

Nope, I'm in your precise situation and it's why I'm doing everything I can to rape their network until I'm dropped. Check out that "hack the htc evo" thread. They did not represent themselves honestly.
I'm about 3 hours north of Sprint's 4G here in Ohio. I signed on because they said that in about 6 months (from the time I signed) my area should be up and running. I should have paid attention to the "should be" part.

If you aren't happy with Sprint's service, why don't you just switch carriers? All you are doing is driving up costs for the rest of us.

Got out of my Sprint contract ETF free!!!

Hey guys,
This isn't a thread to give instructions on how to screw Sprint over, nor is it how to get out of yours. I'm just telling you that they let me out.
I cited the fact that my service is miserable, with really low speeds, along with the fact that their new agreement with Lightsquared means that my EVO will never be able to get their 4g service, which I was promised when I signed up. They agreed with my position, and said that if I returned my phones when I left, they would waive the ETF, which I think was very fair of them. Like I said, I wasn't out to screw them over or get over on them, which is why I'm returning the phones to them. They gave me a full month to find new service as well.
Just wanted to tell everyone this so that if you're having a similar situation with service and want to switch (and aren't greedy!!!), Sprint will work with you. That being said, I'll miss this forum when I switch, and all the great Devs. I'm switching back to Verizon, and getting myself the new HTC Rezound, which I hear is phenomenal, along with beautiful Verizon 4G!!!!
I got out of my ETF in June, citing the same reason, slow 3g speeds. I do not have to turn in my phones to sprint, that seems a little shady to me. YOU bought the phones, YOU own the phones. You should NOT have to give them back, you have no reason to, they are YOURS.
Good idea, I'm getting near that move myself. It is rather silly I own a 4G phone that has never and will never see the use of 4G, considering it was sold as such.
Wonder if I can use that to force an upgrade in January. Dropping Premium really sucks, because now I'm stuck with a phone that will never see 4G or be able to get LTE, probably, until Jan 2013.

Honestly, I would have liked to keep the phones and sell them, but I don't think it's unreasonable for them to ask for them back in exchange for waiving the fee. That's what the ETF is there to prevent. Otherwise, they would have given me a $500 phone for $99 bucks, and I could just cancel my service and sell it. I think it's a fair offer for letting me out of my contract after only 4 months, and that's why I took it. I was surprised they let me out at all.
Amazon Wireless has all phones for a penny today for new activations, so I grabbed two Rezounds for 2 cents, and activated my new Verizon account!!!!
Going to need a new handle.
I have my Evo and with an AOSP Rom, my 3G is pretty solid, and I am in Bethpage.
Where on LI are you that your 3G is slow?
I live in North Bellmore, and got no reception in my house until they sent me an Airave, and I go to SUNY Old Westbury, where there is literally no reception whatsoever. I have to force roam on Verizon's towers, and that only gives me 1x unless I do the PRL hack. I shouldn't have to pay Sprint to roam on Verizon's towers on 3g, when I can get a better phone, and get Verizon 4g for just a bit more.
Yeah, once you go north of the LIE or NSP, the service blows. I am shocked that the service is bad in NB. My father lives in Wantagh right off of Jerusalem and I still get solid speeds. Just as good as his Droid X2.
Good luck with the Rezound. It's a sweet phone and VZW service is great, just really expensive compared to Sprint. See if SUNY Students get some kinda discount from Big Red. More often than not, there is some sort of price break offered.
I had Verizon before I switched to Sprint in June...Their service is great. I get a 19% discount through my job, and they said they'll put that back on for me once I activate the phones. Nice to get $30 off a month, makes it a bit more reasonable, plus all of Nassau County is 4g enabled. Suffolk County is still only 3g though, which is a bit of a bummer, but w/e....I'm not there that much.
I'm going to give them a call tomorrow and see if I can work something out with them. With full bars of 3G it takes, literally, 1.5-2m for my Facebook home page to load. It's beyond abysmal. Add to that the fact that 4G is listed on their map as everywhere in my town (and yet I've been able to get one bar of it one time anywhere around here) it is useless.
I have no problem handing my phone over, I just want out (especially since Rezounds are $.01 right now ). We'll see, I s'pose.

When i was talking to one of the business sales reps last year, he mentioned that LI east of Rte 110 should be LTE enabled by Q1 2012. Not sure how accurate that info is, but that would be great to have it so quickly.

I haven't had any problem either. I get a pretty fair discount so I can't complain.
Just got off the phone with a retention supervisor and they could not wave the ETF due to data speeds because there was not any guarantee of speed in the contract. I have 15 months left on my contract and I've been with them for 4 years. I am switching to Verizon because it is a lot better in my area. They did offer me a one-time $25 credit but i refused it out of principle. They should let people who want to leave go when they KNOW they cannot compete with verizon. Slowly Verizon will slow down from overuse and the system will balance. Contracts are evil /rant

Yes there is, the contract guarantees 3g speeds between 600kbps and 1300kbps when you are within sprint's coverage area. Call back and speak to another retentions rep, or email [email protected] with your situation, and you will get a callback from a rep from his office within 48 hours.

I too do not want to "rip-off" sprint but this applies to anywhere where the coverage map says I get coverage, correct?
Sprint just cancelled my services ETC free due to excessive roaming.....go figure.

Can you provide a source for this? I am getting 2-8 kilobytes per second where i live using sprint. I am already up to 66 gigabytes of roaming data this month (and 30 last month) so I'll probably get kicked soon anyway, but it'd be nice to get out faster. I've called them complaining and trying to get out etf free 3 times and I dont think one more call is going to help without the exact quote. Thanks a bunch.
