Need advice: broken speaker

Hi,
The speaker on the outside of my universal (the onw you hold against your ear with when the screen is on the inside) is broken.
That started as something like a bad contact (if I pressed the phone against my ear it would work, otherwise not). Now it is not working at all.
The speaker on the LCD side is working fine.
The advice I want:
I took a look at the service manual PDF I got and disassembling the phone to reach that speaker is a lot of work. I do have experience with diassembling electronic devices and even do some soldering, etc. However, my doubt is this: I have a phone which does work, but the way I like to use it to make calls does not work.
Question 1
Is it worth the trouble to diasassemble the whole device just to check if it is indeed a bad contact due to i.e. dirt? Or will I actually risk breaking something off, which will render the complete phone useless? Looking at the service manual, one needs to use a plastic tool to actually open the phone. How easy do the hinges break off?
Question 2
Has anyone had a similar problem? Was it easy to fix?

you dont need to disassemble the whole phone just disassemble the screen . It isnt that hard to do, just remove all the screws from the screen . The screen casing is difficult to budge at first but once you have freed part of it open, the rest follows quite easily.

Meanwhile I couldn't resist and opened it...
...and I found the guilty part.
It seems that the outside speaker is actually attached to the case and uses a contact connection to the PCB. This connection is made by to metal plates, which are tiny and folded. They will compensate the varying pressure made on the case (i.e. when you press it) and I guess with time they tend to break at the fold.
This happend to one of the two contacts. First I tried to fix it, but the truth is that it is so small that it is quite impossible to do anything about it. I considered soldering a small wire, but that would require to solder the other end to the pin on the PCB, which then would mean, I could no longer use a regular replacement speaker, if this one had any other fault (unless I could clean the contact again, but trying that, I could break something else, also).
This means: now I am not able to use the outside speaker anymore...
Question: where can I purchase a replacement one? Would anyone sell me one from a broken Universal (for a symbolic price - anything over 10 Euro is too much, as I would prefer to just buy a another second hand Universal)?
And as I was figuring this out, I used the occation to fix that loose stylus!
1) Open the underside case (4 screws, then open the case all around with some thin plastic).
2) Roll a little bit of celotape and place it between the case and the pin that fixes the stylus in position.
3) Try it out until it is OK.
4) Close the case and that's it!

Hi buddy, in fact I did have the same problem that you're having some months ago, my uni fell and since then the problem just got worst, until some day a couple months ago I opened it and fix it.
It's just like you say, the little golden plated contacts wore off, then the little speaker's metal plates just were too high to make any contact against the pcb, it's really simple, just pull the plates gently away from the little speaker, do clean both sides of the contacts (pcb and speaker's plates), i did this with a little xacto knife (be very gentle), and that's it! It worked just fine.

The problem is that in my case one of the metal plates broke off.
I tried to fix that, but it is to small for me to achive anything.

Has anyone opened up their HD2??

Hey anyone already opened up their HD2? I need to open mine since my back button got stuck while my baby girl tried to press too hard on it. Now the back button feels like it's not presing at all compared to the other buttons.
i also have a spare housing that I am thinking of putting in.
Anyone can point me to the right direction?

i've had the back off mine.
first search youtube for leo disassembly and you'll find an htc disassembly video: "leo Ds" (and another "leo As" for reassembly). they are somewhat daunting, but do not despair!
mine came back from a htc warranty service with a fingerprint on the inside of the lens glass and i couldn't be bothered sending it back again for cleaning so i did it myself. cracking the case isn't all that easy, or wasn't for me.
after you remove the 4 screws (get the void sticker and moisture indicator out with a pin), you still have to unclip the back from the chassis. WHY do electronics manufacturers design them like that??! in the video the tech uses a plastic hooked tool which i do not possess so i had to rely on my fingernails -- which i nearly pulled out! i tried for a good 15 minutes before it finally separated (with me sweating all the way that i was going to damage the LCD with the force i was having to apply). but it all finished happily in the end.

Assuming u broke the keypad (just like me, but mine is right in the middle) at about the 6th minute of the disassembly video, they'll show u where u'd be replacing the keypad.
Removing the 'lcm and follow the indicator' isnt as simple as it look. you'd find the glue to be really tough. Putting it in an oven, sure, it'd be hot to the touch, and let it cool down a bit it'd be hard again. Hairdryer? Still too hot. Gloves?u'll lose touch sesitivity. So what i did was use a small blade/box cutter and cut which ever visible glue... and assembling, i had to replace all the double sided tape with some cheap ones...weak ones. Could be a good thing.. or a bad thing. Good, cos i know i dont have to wrestle with some really tough glue..in case i ruined my lcd again.... bad.. cos its..not that secure, i rmember that i nearly ripped it open unintentionally!
Neway replacing my digitizer+lcd took about 3 hours...had a couple of breaks, and spent 15 mins looking for the proximity sensor or was it the ambient light sense 'lense'..very tiny things those things are. So be careful...cos i eventually lost it..grrr
Anyway, Best of luck.. .now to find a replacement keypad that cost less than 5usd..hehe

a good tip here is to work with the phone in a large tupperware box so that if something drops out it can't go anywhere.
note to the OP: i've read several posts where people damaged the ribbon cable connecting the bottom buttons to the mainboard so be careful. it looks very delicate.

Having just opened mine up several times recently I can offer a couple of tips.
1. Unscrew the four screws - they are T5 torx size.
2. Use thin stiff plastic pieces (I found the plastic case that nails are sold in to be the right stiffness and thickness). Cut some up and push them between the case and the phone works so that they hold each of the locking tabs out in turn. I used five or six bits to do this. Three on the vol control side, two at the top and one on the top area of the other side.
3. Then pushing out at the top where the battery would sit while prying with finger nails outward on the long vol control side you can work each of the locking tabs out so the plastic bits hold them unlocked. Do this along that side, across the top and down the other side working each one a little bit as you go and repeat.
4. This should allow the top edge to come out allowing you to lift is out and "up" so that the button end slides out.
This worked very well for me..several times.
The display is held to the electronics portion by double sided tape and yes it is very strong. But you can soften the adhesion significantly using a heat gun. But you must be careful to heat the whole area to avoid thermal differences cracking the screen. The heat will loosen the tapes grip allowing you to pry the screen away from the electronics side.
Note that the screen is made up of the LCD covered by the glued on digitizer and they are connected with a single ribbon cable on the lower right hand side (I think from memory). This means the screen has to lift off with a hinge action. Lifting along the opposite long edge to the ribbon cable, rather than lift from the top or bottom.

Hi, I tried to open mine and followeed the video, be careful as the video makes it look much easier than what it really is, I ended up ruining my device, just take your time and do it slowly.

The problem about the key is the back button feels stuck.... the other buttons are snappy and have a tactile sort of feel, where as the back button doesn't have the same feel. looks like it was pressed to hard and never popped back up...
just annoying when i've been very careful with the phone.

ok looks like i wouldn't have to open my phone.... i tried to but then there's a warranty void sticker, so I just called tmobile and explained about the back key being stuck.... and they're sending me a replacement.
i'm gonna lose my invisible shield full body though... but better than risking breaking my phone....

[Q] Screen problem

I've got a little problem with my hd2 ^^
Since several weeks, the plastic from the LED's was pushed inside the device and so the vibration alarm wasn't really silent anymore (since the vibrator is behind the led plastic and it touched it inside).
So now I decided to open the device an push the plastic back in it's place.
Opening the device was really hard because of the massive glue they used^^
But after some minutes I got the electronics out of the body. I cleaned it a little bit up, fixed the plastic an put the device back together.
Starting it, confirmed that the vibration now works silent again, but my screen stays black...
I really don't know what happend there , but I never touched the screen or openend the device more than I had to.
So maybe anyone has an idea?

First thing is that i dont understand where you finded "massive glue" if you just opened your phone to place back leds cover/zoom plastic. They dont use glue, only adeshive stick tape. But this is just interesting for me.
Second thing is: are you used some minimalistic bead when you placed back leds cover/zoom plastic? If you didnt, then it can drop again to inside.
If your screen is black then maybe you just acidently touched connector and ribbon cable, where lcd connects to motherboard. You must open your device again and recheck. This connector attached with ribbon cable at lcd must be sealed with yellow tape.

yes, I put something on the led plastic.
I checked all the connectors and also watched a video where the disassemble the entire phone in order to see where I could have damaged or removed something. But as far as I can see, there is nothing loose or missing. I didn't remove the mainboard; I just took the device out of it's outside cover.

Hmm, i dont have idea whats wrong then.
I opened mine phone not once. Also replaced more 5 HD2 digitizers and lcds. All time dont had this probelm.
Are you sure you dont had static electric on your hands?

yes, I was protected against static electric.
maybe I'm gonna disassemble it totally and see if something else is loose.
Turning it on works, because the vibrator triggers once.
And I just realized that the power led does not work when I'm plugging the device in...strange

[Q] HTC HD2 weak wifi signal

Hey i installed gingerbread android 2.3.7 on my phone again but this time im getting really weak wifi signals... i'm only 5 feet away from router. It was not like this before so i do not know whats going on ( i only dropped my phone twice)
can you guys help me? is it a software issues or hardware?

I would recommend installing a few different roms (that are known to work with wifi) and see if anything changes/improves.
If nothing improves, maybe flash back to winmo 6.5 and see if wifi improves.
If nothing improves then, you may have damaged your wifi antennae when you dropped it then hit up T-mobile!

Possibly knocked the wifi coax loose from the mainboard. It's pretty easy to open up an HD2 and reattach that cable, I've had mine come loose before and that's what I had to do.
I'd definitely try the steps in the above post first just to make sure it's not a rom or kernel specific issue. And if it's still under warranty, don't bother taking it apart and ruining your warranty, obviously just return it to t-Mobile.

hey can you explain in more detail how to push back the wifi coax cable your talking about

Remove the battery cover, battery, sim card, and sd card.
Remove the 4 torx screws that are under little round stickers under the battery cover.
Using an old credit card or a plastic knife, slide between the screen and the housing to release the little plastic clips one by one which hold the housing to the phone's chassis.
Take your time and be careful not to scratch the housing or stick the card/knife in too far, damaging the fragile stuff inside,
It helps to put a little pressure on the back side of the screen wth your thumb while orying with the credit card (back of screen under battery)
The wifi coaxial cable runs from one corner of the mainboard, up along one side of the chassis, is taped together with some other wires, and leads to another small board up near the top of the phone.
Check the connections at both ends, making sure they are connected firmly and are in straight.
You might want to unplug them, just to be sure and hear/feel them click into place.
Take your time, set yourself aside a nice little workspace, and if you are unsure of anything, don't hesitate to come back here and ask.
There is a disassembly video here in the HD2 section somewhere, I think it's in HD2 General. It'd be worth it to search for it and watch at least the first part of the video, just to get an idea what you're dealing with. It's not a very hard job, it should take you like maybe an hour/hour and a half start to finish.
This will void your warranty permanently though.

Thank you sir i just followed the steps you did and it fixed the problem my wifi works fine but now i have another issue....
i dont know if i touched something or disconnected something in the process but my sound, vibration and volume button does not work. External speaker is not playing any sound (no music or key button taps) and no sound is made when placing a phone call BUT the other person on the end can hear me just fine so i'm guessing i might of disconnected like the speaker. ( my assumption)

Oh and when a call is being placed or recieved the screen automatically turns off and it becomes non responsive i.e if i take my phone off the ear and want to put it on hold the screen is still black instead of turning back on

The screen going black during a call is a pretty common problem with the HD2, and is likely not related to disassembling your phone as long as the screen functions normally otherwise. Since you didn't take your phone far enough apart to affect the light/proximity sensor, I can't imagine how disassembly would have affected it. You would have to take the mainboard and screen out from the chassis to get to that sensor.
The volume problem on the other hand, is probably due to either your volume rocker not being placed correctly during re-assembly, or the speaker contacts not being aligned properly. You'll have to take it back apart and ivestigate what went wrong.
Try going into Settings/Sound, and checking that the volume is not turned all the way down. If the volume is not all the way down, then you should be able to hear sound, so your speaker is probably not aligned properly.
Does your volume rocker feel different than before? If it doesn't make a definite 'click' when you press it, then it is probably slightly out of place. Also look for any wires that could have been pinched and damaged when you snapped your phone back together.

What is a volume rocker? When i start the phone it usually vibrates once then goes through the starting procoess. Now it doesn't vibrate at all. Phone turns on and i click the volume button up and nothing happens. I checked settings and everything is up
I have the phone opened as we speak and the reciever cable is connected and the vibrator cable is connected too. I tried to use tweezers to see if i can unhook it but their on too tight so thats a good thing. The two orange dots on the volume thing.. the bottom on was slightly off so i put i centered it
Still nothing works. no vibrating no sound ( the person on the other line can hear me but i can't hear anything) but the phone works great.

The volume rocker is the button that 'rocks' back and forth to control the volume.
It has to be positioned right in order to push the contacts that lie beneath it.
Since your phone's apart right now, what happens when you hold the battery in it with one hand, boot it up, and press the volume button contacts manually? If they buttons themselves do nothing, then it must be that they lost their connection somewhere, you'd have to trace the wires and figure out where they're not connected. If they do work, then the volume rocker was just misaligned.
As for the speaker, it has to be that it is not contacting the two little contacts correctly. Look at the speaker and make sure it is sitting correctly in the housing, and look ffor any obstructions near the vibrator motor.

No i can't press down on the volume button ever since i opened it it hasn't fit back right. Doesn't make a click sound
and what contacts on the speaker should i be looking for? are they under the speaker itself? should i remove the speaker? Theres no destruction on the vibrator its looks though like its sitting kinda tight between that camera flash being there..the metal spinning thing on the end of it can spin 360 so nothing its preventing it from moving.

I also can use my headset and the sound and call works fine besides the going to the black screen and not responding. i also noticed my camera does not load up either. but that could probably be solved with a clean install of gingerbread nand rom

LG Wireless Charging Pad - Disable Beep

I purchased the wireless charging cover for my Droid 4, and two LG wireless charging pads for work/home. I can't stand the beep it makes when it begins charging.
I opened up one of the pads, hoping there was an obvious speaker with some wire leads I could cut, but it's not obvious to me what makes the beep. I've attached a picture of the board if anyone has any input. I'll update this if I figure something out.
Here's a guy that pulled a speaker off the PCB with pliers, but didn't describe which component.

The speaker is actually the large box at bottom-right. I ran a knife around the edges and pulled at it with some pliers, and the top of it came off like a cover, with some piece inside. The beep is no longer emitted without this piece.

at first i couldnt figure out how to remove the back but found the screws under the four rubber nubs.
I followed the directions on the amazon link posted and pulled the entire black box off from the circuit board!
I put the thing back together and it now charges silently. I really dont see how this thing ever left the design room after the prototype was made with that terrible beep sounds

Component PZ1 (Bottom Right on that picture) is the buzzer. The other black thing with glue around it (Reference L1 on the silkscreen) is an inductor, which is very likely to be part of the charging circuit or voltage regulation circuit, removing it would end in tears, as was the case with one of the guys on that Amazon page.
Also, I strongly recommend against yanking parts off PCBs with pliers. Depending on how strongly it's held on you could crack the circuit board or damage neighboring components. You really want to clean away that adhesive, being careful not to cut the PCB, and then use proper desoldering equipment (soldering iron and solder wick, hot air gun, etc.) to remove the speaker.

What's the best way to get the back cover off? I can't seem to rip the rubber nubs out.

Ok I got the back cover off, but I'm having a hard time taking off the screws that hold the circuit board to the back.

Ok, I finally got sick of hearing that annoying beep. So I searched it and found this post. Did the deed and fixed it. Thanks for all the help.
Now, I would also like to find the notification sound that comes on when I place my phone on the pad.
If I turn my phone sound "off" it doesn't make the sound (obviously). But I have gone through all the settings to try to find where I can switch it off permanently.
Unfortunately I can't find it. I thought it would have been under Settings/accessory/Dock Sound but that was not it. Does anyone know how to turn off this notification???
