Mali400 too weak for Note? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

There are many games with stuttering issues, such as Asphalt 6 HD or this gameloft modern warfare clone. Maybe the Mail400 is too weak for the notes resolution? After all it was build for the SGS2 with lower res...

I noticed it too.
Hope You are wrong and ICS will solve this stuttering... If not I'm gonna sell my device and return to my old sGs2 that was smooth as silk

The Note stutters a lot more than the SII even outside gaming. Hopefully the ICS build for the Note is as decent as the one on the SII.

I have no stuttering whatsoever on mine in Asphalt 6 with Chainfire 3D

Make sure your large-sized games are stored on the INTERNAL memory and not on your SD card. The internal memory reads at 30mb/s. Your SD card will not come close to that.

Actually my Samsung class 10 does. Quite good for the price.

Asphalt 6 also stutters in SGS2... make sure you use cf root and OC the GPU to 267Mhz - 1000Mhz with tegrak ultimate!
I did OC my GPU in my SGS2 and my note and don't see stuttering anymore

Not for random read/write access. A class 4 would be better. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14456360&postcount=42

I think the GPU and CPU are fast enough, but the problem is within the rom.

Reckless racing 2, no doubt not the most intensive game, stutters on the Note with GB,
But while I was on ICS Leak (Rocket 1.5) the game was flawless.
So, I would place my bets on ICS delivering the Performance we are lacking.

I believe the reason for this is because ICS has GPU Acceleration Enabled where as GB does not however... I am on Darky Note ROM and it has the GPU Acceleration coded into it and I have never seen any stuttering of any kind using this ROM.
Perhaps give that a try...

You need Tegrak Ultimate and lock the gpu to 267 MHz.

It has nothing g to do with hardware its becouse some games are not coded for our devices and therefore will not take full advantage of the CPU or gpu .

ICS wont fix it for games that already have gpu acceleration. you can do lots with software, but you cant make up for a GPU that doesnt have enough graphical power.
the reason why the note stutters more on games that dont stutter on the S2 is because the note has 2.66 times as many pixels at any given time (384000 pixels on s2 screen vs 1024000 pixels screen). the mali gpu doesnt have enough graphical processing power for graphically demanding games on our notes, hence it has difficulty maintaining a steady 60fps in some games (or 57 since that's the refresh rate for our notes).

The question is though if the games are programmed to bring the mail400 to the limit. After all it's still better in almost all other phones, you need to take that into consideration. It's hard to tell also because I don't KNOW how most of the games are supposed to run. F.E. the MW clone from gameloft, does it run at 60 on the S2? It sure doesn't for me on the note, feels pretty ****ty.

Even a game like Pocket League Soccer is slowing down in quality mode...maybe 720p is just too much. Wouldn't come by surprise though.

Im running midnote ICS Rom and all my stuttering and even overheating issues are gone with gaming. And whats even more amazing is that this ICS build is underclocked to 1.2ghz

How does the nexus 10 cpu compare to Tegra 3?

Heard some reports from a tech site that while playing a game at high quality the performance on this tablet tanked so they had to lower the settings to alleviate the issue. Really worried about this since if the cpu is not up to snugg i might as well get the nexus 4?

The CPU is very good. The GPU is the best GPU on Android currently but that huge resolution is pulling FPS down.
Sent from my LG-P990 using xda app-developers app
Well, it destroys the Tegra 3, that is for sure. But yeah, it's that resolution. It's supposed to be able to handle it, but obviously it won't do it as well as if it were lower.
Also take into account that all the reviews are not running the same thing the one we will purchase. Google has made this clear. Things like miracast and multiple users are not there as of right now and some performance will be ironed out b4 release.

do you think game devs will give the option to run the game at a lower resolution to get better FPS? Seems like it'd be worth it to run a game @ 1080p and gain some performance.

Well Gameloft said they will optimise their games for Nexus 10 display. I have no idea what they meant under that. I hope they can somehow make their games run 1600p native. If not, well 1080p upscaled is still very good.

Gameloft did this with NOVA 3 already, presumably to update the textures. As this is not a big job, Gameloft should be able to do the same with their other top games.
(By the way, Nexus 10 supports all of NOVA 3's special effects.)

Saw in a review (cant remember which one) that although it is faster than the Tegra 3 the multi core of the T3 was better for intensive gaming since it was better at multitasking, I think they had to lower graphics in nova 3 or deadtrigger!

Nexus 10 gaming lag discussion

Hello folks
Some high res games in the nexus does have frame drips or even lags
Such as Modern Combat 4
Or GTA maxed out
So do u think its a software or hardware problem...
To start off, I personally think that the high res screen that the nexus 10 has has a large impact on its performance
Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk 2
Its not the high res screen dude. Its the kernel. If its the high res screen the game wouldn't run smoothly for 15 secs then lag for 5 seconds.

In some cases it maybe but check the video in youtube of modern combat 4, overall it just stutters
But for GTA ur right maybe its kernel problem
My 2 cents

Glad someone brought this up. Mine lags in vice city at 80 PC resolution. N.o.v.a. 3 seems to be fine but stutters at times. I tried every benchmarking software out there and they all returned normal scores for the nexus 10. So I really don't know where the problem lies?
Mine starts to lag when the back of the unit gets too warm. Hoping the devs can fix it via kernel or custom rom. But so far though this is the best android tablet for gaming thus far. Gonna have to see though whats going to be released by others at CES next month. I may just return and hopefully they come out with tablets with quadcore exynos and slightly better gpu.

The MC4 N10 YouTube videos that I've seen are running the leaked MC4. The leaked version had Galaxy S3 specific settings (Edit: I'm wrong about this). The version that you can currently purchase on the N10 is way smoother than the leak. Unfortunately, I uninstalled the copy of MC4, but I suspect that if you open up the android manifest, you'd see different settings. The leak ran at native resolution (Edit: not positive about this). Based on the limited time I played on the N10, I think the production version on the N10 is running at 1/2 resolution, possibly with lower quality textures. It still looks and plays great, but the movement felt a bit "slushy" compared to the iPad version. I highly reccomend the game. The only reason I uninstalled is because I had 40 hours of multiplayer gameplay on the iOS version and was ranked around 300 with nearly all of the weapons purchased. Unfortunately when I log in on the N10 with the same Gameloft Live account, none of the multiplayer progress is carried over. It seems the Android players are on different servers, though I can confirm that WIFI/local multiplayer games are cross platform.
Edit: I'm completely wrong about the AndroidManifest.xml. Both specify xperia play optimized content and the same OpenGL ES version. I'm not sure where the changes are but, the production version plays pretty smooth. If you look at AndroidManifest files for other games, like Shadowgun Deadzone, you can see specifications for texture compression and things like that, but I don't see anything like that for MC4. Sorry for the mistake.

The Exynos 5 quad is supposed to first be paired with the Mali-T658 GPU, which is similar to ours but with twice as many cores and a few other better things. It also isnt supposed to be out for another couple quarters.

Nexus 10 gaming problems?

hey guys, im looking to buy the nexus 10, but it seems that the res, of the screen, makes some games lag, or is it down to the games not yet optimised?, not only that but, is is possible to force games to run at a lower res, ?
is it worth getting for gaming,?
thanks. amatris
I've had no problems with Nova 3, Shadow Gun, Shadow gun dead zone, Vice city, Deard Trigger, GTA 3, fruit ninja, Angry Birds and SuperGNES.
Which games have you been told lag?
I have to say, I've noticed lag on even simple games like Subway Surfer. In fact sometimes you lose because of the lag!
However I have also played Nova 3 and a couple of other high quality games and had no issues. Thinking it may be more settings based than tablet based!
NFS: MW is one of the games that drop frames pretty hard and is all because of the thermal throttle that the exynos 5 have.
Thanks for the reply guys, bit this id making me think tjat its not a good gaming tablet :-\ , is it still worth it?

A lot of the problems can actually be solved by slightly under volting the CPU. This reduces the thermal throttling.

Undervolting is all done through a custom kernel. Check out some of the threads in the dev sections and see if you're up for it. Or just install the Franco custom kernel and you won't have to adjust anything and gaming should be just great! :good:
Do not get this tablet if you want a tablet for gaming plain and simple. The tablet has a relatively weak GPU and massive screen resolution to power. Games like Dead Trigger will run fine on Low settings, but crank the settings to high and the game turns into a stuttering mess. Need for Speed Most Wanted has less graphical effects and details than the iPad version and yet also runs laggy and drops frames. Even something like Subway Surfers and Temple Run are laggy and have a delay when you swipe your finger.
Undervolting it does not help. Undervolting it merely makes it not throttle when it gets too hot. However, the throttling is not the only issue this tablet has with gaming. The GPU is not good enough for this display. You can notice it well enough when scrolling and watching text deform. This text deforming problem happened in the iPad 3 to a lesser degree and is completely absent in the iPad 2 and 4. (3 being that awkward middle retina child without a good enough GPU).
This tablet is great for media consumption but not for playing games.

Its just hard to recommend anything other than the ipad if you want it primarily for gaming. The ipad has a significantly larger library with games that look and play better than anything we have. Look at the note 10.1.
Hmm ok ty, should I be looking at the tegra 3 gpu's for graphics and I'm guessing a quad core cpu?

the Quad-core Mali T604 is fast as hell trust me
the problem is that it doesnt get enough CPU power to show off.
the stock settings for the CPU usage is set way to low!
one more thing that makes the games to lag is the up/down speed changes.
everytime the CPU changes its frequency you get lag.
if you have been into PC games you know that a fast GPU is depending alot on the CPU speed as well.
with the stock 1000mhz speeds that the CPU is using for games it wont max out the GPU.
the GPU screams for more CPU power.
the ONLY way to get games running smooth on the N10 is to LOCK the CPU speed at 1500 or 1700mhz.
but its one more problem and i think you know what it is
so to TS
dont judge the N10 for one bad optimized game(NFSMW) with stock ROM.
the games i have tried runs all at 60fps with max graphic settings.
but ok its not stock

not much but you notice it.

My tablet is locked at 1700mhz and is laggy in every game I try except the playstation emulator and dead trigger on low settings. Subway surfers is still laggy and need for speed is unplayable. I am a pc gamer so im very sensitive to framerates. A good way to tell the gpu is lacking is by watching text deform as you scroll, a pretty classic sign of gpu performance I believe we have the fastest cpu on the tablet front. But a much weaker gpu than the ipad 4 and it shows in our gaming performance. Im not sure how you are getting these games to run at 60fps. Sre you sure it is 60fps? I know many console gamers see 26fps and think its smooth while I think its utter rubbish.

You're throttling.

the king has fallen (high end games that dont work smoothly on max setting)

The mali 400 in sgs 2 is bound by it's vertex and triangle perfomance so newer vertex and triangle heavy games will not run smoothly on S2
here some list that i tested :
Real Boxing no full effect
Gangstar rio (effects disabled on android)
Gangstar vegas(need optimization, still quite playable on high)
Anomaly 2 (vertex and triangle heavy games low perfomance benchmark score test)
modern combat 4 (need compatible rom and kernel, playable on latest neatrom but still not smooth)
Tainted Keep
Horn ( SGS 3 and note 2 optimized, seriously???!! lag on my sgs 2)
Conduit HD (optimized tegra 3 vertex and triangle heavy, still very playable but not smooth)
The dark knight rises (little - mid Stuttering on some area, i wonder is there any android phone that run this game smoothly)
still our S2 can play 90% games smoothly on max setting, the best and cheapest android gaming phone to date
any info or tips to play those game smoothly... just post below

I can pretty much confirm this on CM10.1, except maybe 'Real Boxing' haven't got around to ever playing it
all i can say that the galaxy s2 is always and will be a device that has its magic ... i tried the s4 and the note3 and all the galaxy new devices but the s2 has its ironic shape that most if us like and its performance is very very good and we are getting every single android version here thanks to xda alive members and its 4.3 inch screen which is to me the best in the business where its not small nor big :good: ...but all i hope is we can get an official kitkat or a new TW official rom newer than 4.1.2
CyanogenMod performance is much better than any touchwiz based rom, dorimanx kernel is awesome too but it's just part of your system not full system. I'm sure performance increase in games is also noticeable compared with samsung crap loaded roms. "Clean" android (aosp) is really clean. Only downside might been not perfect implementation of system parts that are only available for newer devices and these supported already by official updates to system base, so android 4.2.2, 4.3.1 and 4.4.1 is not perfect on s2 just because unofficial libraries still taken from 4.1.2 base. For example GTA III wasn't working on 4.3.1 but had no problems back with android 4.0.4... Compatiblity is random For FPS in games I'm still really happy we can at least run these games and as said before better get a PC if you want to play games, for price of today's high end phone you got great machine. S2 is enough for having a smooth android based device and for me that's a border where you need to think you need spend money on phone that won't be big change anyways or pc, console that will make real difference in gaming.
galaxy s2 is now like a midrange phone old gpu but still awesome

Hey, BTW
Real Boxing was working with Tegra 3 graphics on my i9100
Gangster Vegas was working very good on High as well
Modern combat 4 works great
The dark knight rises works great as well
I haven't encountered any lags with those games
Even Dead trigger 2 performance on the s2 is acceptable with the high graphics enabled
NOTE : I am running stock cyanogenmod 10.2

Try running these games on DorimanX Kernel with CPU and GPU OCed. Should stutter less:good: (I dont play too much games myself but from experience DorimanX kernel + OC = Best performance SII and ever provide)
so after reading a couple of posts i guess it all comes down to rom level. I myself personally have not had any good gaming performance on slimbean roms or either it doesn't work at all.

I haven't played the games you listed, but a week back I did install Injustice: Gods Among Us.
And I have not seen a single hiccup at all.
I'm running Stock 4.1.2, unrooted so obviously not overclocked either.
I'd say this is still a hell of a device..
Hi guys,
The king has not fallen yet.
Have you heared about PurePerformances X MOD? It does increase the phone performance without OC , someone told me he can play dead trigger 2 at max setting (playable)with this mod:good:,note:its flashable via CWM so flash this recovery first and the MOD.
Hope this helps

Considering the Nexus4 ppwer. Why is it.

Why some mid range games lag? Before I update the gpu and flash zip to optimize dalvic and bionic. They lag. It is tolerable for many but not for me. Also after I flash and zips and the gpu update still its lags. You dont have the smoothness that you expect in the Nexus 4 while playing. Games lime temple runs, and vector.
Btw Im all stock but rooted.
Thanks!!

Which games lag?
It could be your kernel settings. Some games aren't optimized well. Despicable Me sometimes lags on Android but it's butter smooth on iOS, while a game like Subway surfers is very smooth on Android, lags like hell on all iPhones.
Optimisation...
There are only few games those are optimizated for Android, but the majority runs really bad! Look at games like The Walking Dead (Telltale), Android port is horrible than the iPhone one.
Thanks to both of you. So want are best games that optomized for android or nexus 4, i wanna really feel the power of thos device haha lol

Subway is light, NFS Most Wanted too, every GTA (expecially SA) can run at 60 FPS only with low-med settings (with max settings they're almost unplayable with a stock Nexus 4), and they don't seem to be well optimized... Anyway they're really funny even with med graphics

I still haven't tried GTA on my N4, All GTA games worked at 60fps on my ex-Note II, and it had a Mali 400 which i think is weaker than Adreno 320.

Ok then, but I doubt you maxed them. GTAs are very heavy and there is no device that can handle them maxed at 60 FPS for now, trust me.

Every benchmark admit that the Nexus 4 is much more powerful than Note 2 in gaming (http://www.phonearena.com/news/Benc...s-Optimus-G-Pro-vs-Nexus-4-vs-HTC-One_id41542).
I don't know, maybe it's the thermal trhottling, that's really really strange.

Most likely, all Qualcomm phones i had (from S1 to S4) were prone to heating. Exynos was cooler but many Samsung flagships (S2,S3,S4,NI,NII,NIII) have eMMC brick bugs...aka Sudden death syndrome...thats why i sold my Note, i was afraid it would stop working

I heard that... It isn't such a problem if you don't flash a ROM with the active bug (two summers ago Samsung relased a ROM with the comand to active the bug for S2, many devices died :\).
Anyway, I'm trying again GTA SA with my Nexus 4 (High settings, shadow med, low reflection, full resolution) and it goes at + or - 40 FPS, just saying...

Have you tried undervolting for less heat? I think 700uV for 184mhz and 1025uV for 1512mhz is the limit, anything under that is an instant crash
How did all of you knew the fps of every game you play? Haha
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk
Just downloaded the fps meter and the result was I got average of 33fps playing despicable me and 58 fps avg. On subway surfers

Hey man. Does undevolting requires underclocking? Or does undervolting affects the performance or just fix the thermal throtling?

When I change kernel\ROM the first thing I do is setting Trickster, and I've a decent Undervoltage.
I have a nominal CPU and the limit for 1512, in my case, is only 10625. Anyway, I had problem with temperature with 4.2.2, but from 4.3 it got better and better

Absolutely not, uv and uc are different things. Undervolting doesn't fix thermal throtling, but minor voltage is equal at minor warm (Did i write it right?)

So sir the lesser the voltage the longer it will take the nexus to get hot? Or to throtlle?
