[DIY]Boot to Gecko (3G/4G) - Nexus S General

This site gives pretty nice instructions on how to make the build yourself
I would make it, but I don't have a large enough hard drive
Right now it's slow and in early alpha, Hardware Acceleration doesn't work as of now.
So until someone can dump the IMG files, this is how it's done.

Somebody should compile this so I can test it out! I currently don't have this PC set up to build anything.

A friend of mine is right now for the 4G. Let's see how this works..
the result file should be .img files that have to be flashed via fastboot.
So everything will be erased, recoveries, ROM's and your SDCARD/eMMC

Does it wipe SD card?
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk

He did say sdcard, so yeah.... it will be the same as when you rooted your phone for the first time. Same system.

I'm the author of the 'how to build on nexus s' article if anyone has any questions on getting it working.

I remember reading about this awhile back and wanting it on our phones.. I have a pretty decent size harddrive, I can help with some things if needed
Im digging in and getting a build going. I wanna play with this haha

My friend is currently trying to get a version that we can flash, because normally it just transfers straight from adb. He has to fix permissions and symlinks of the dump. Hopefully if everything goes right we should have a build by tonight

I would really appreciate this, been wanting to try it out, but don't have a PC running linux now.

Interesting. If I get time I might setup Ubuntu in Virtual Box and give it a try.

I'm so trying this when it's fully functional, even if I have to wait a long time.
Whoever is in charge of the UI is great at what they do, it's really nice looking. Especially the dialer.

Wow , I find this thread now ... I feel stupid for posting my thread now .. Alright Everything is Done , but one question ... If I flash this will clockworkmod go away, or anything from my memory ? like all my music and etc ... Just need to get things clear

what happened to the thread you posted with the precompiled zip?? I was able to pull it up on google cache, but it's deleted from XDA for some reason.
was there an issue with the build that caused it to get pulled?? I'd like to try it out since I've already got your zip.

Easy to install 2.2 rom?

Hey guys-
I was wondering if anybody would be willing to create an easy to install froyo rom for the vibrant that could be installed through rom manager? If it's possible and someone would be willing to take on the challenge I and many other noobs out there would be much ablidged. Thanks in advance.

CM 6 is coming. For now enjoy the great job done so far
if you take a look at other threads under this forum, there has been work at porting 2.2 to this phone. Some difficulties in getting a fully functional build. I would recommend using the search function before starting a new thread, especially when posting under development, as you'll prolly get flamed pretty heavily.

I'm totally aware there's a 2.2 rom out for the vibrant already but what I'm asking for is a much easier to install version of froyo.

It does exist. It was the international Froyo leak but it is not a complete Froyo since it is missing JIT as well as other things. That leaked ROM is incomplete and is not stable for everyday use. Especially on a Vibrant, there are a lot of bugs with it and it is not recommended to be using it as the daily ROM.
It's better off waiting for 2.2 to release by Samsung or the CM team. It's just around the corner. Be patient.

Exactly - there is no Froyo rom that is much easier to install than the leaked int'l one, let alone a stable one. What he's asking for doesn't exist. There's no secret, stable, froyo.zip floating around that people just aren't talking about.

So far theres not an easy way to get a fully functional 2.2 however as with anything give it time and we will see it some time.
i do believe that everyone on here wants that including all the developers working on it. if we were happy with 2.1 then we would have stuck with the original os that samsung put out for the vibrant. really did you have to ask this here? or at all? its technology its always growing. give it time!

Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
For what it is worth, I can state that this will install using recovery 2.5.0.5, as I just got done doing so.
Yep, i've reverted back as far as ROM manager allows and so far so good with backing up any ROM and flashing any ROM
As far as this Honeycomb port goes, I wish I had this on my Gtab. Obviously needs some work, but wow this is a 10 on the cool factor. Who cares who did it or not, these Dev's deserve mad respect for their time and hard work. I actually approached the dev for a port on the Gtab and he says he's been trying, but still no luck. As an owner and avid Gtab forumster, I can say that many people on the Gtab forums would consider this guy a god if he were successful on porting this over.
Everybody chill out about the drama and give props where it's due. This is awesome news and fantastic work.
Yes, it is. Is there another recovery I could use?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Yea go into rom manager and at the bottom it has older recoveries use a 2. whatever one.
flashed for a little but forgot to install gapps. pretty useless right now most stuff doesnt work. along with the bad lag its also pretty hard to navigate since its made for a tablet. things are really small and the mouse has to be moved with the toggle which is a pain in the ass among many other things. might go back to it and try gapps just for ****s and gigs. otherwise useless. will be cool when the bionic comes out and a port comes to that.

And they say it wouldnt work... CM7

you guys need to read directions thoroughly.
I've had CM7 on my Vibrant weeks ago.
you can use the ToggleHeadset widget for the headphone status:
http://xda.theonlytech.com/files/ToggleHeadset.apk
plus if u want a data connection, you have to flash the vibrant modem in a special way.
extract the modem.bin out of whatever modem.zip you want.
next place it in your internal sdcard
after you have installed CM7
open terminal emulator and type:
Code:
su
busybox dd if=/sdcard/modem.bin of=/dev/block/mtdblock5
enjoy your mobile internet connection.
THIS ROM is not meant for n00bs.
If you can't get it to work, you're a n00b.
no offense, but it's the truth.

There's ability, and then there's willingness.
I could slaughter a cow, gut/skin it, cut off a slab, grind it and grill it... Or I could do drive-thru.
Using and shooting through alpha builds is fun in its own way but some of us just can't be arsed.
Any particular reason the film was sped up?

1. Headphone icon on notification bar on = no sound, Noticed on another thread that a toggle widget would fix it, was not able to find one.
2. Vol buttons reversed.
3. Home and Search softkeys not working. FAQ from CM suggested to wipe to fix home key, Tried like 4 times no dice.
If I can get those to work then this will be a Daily Driver for sure.

You seem like a decent guy but, first the guy that took the time to answer your post is one of the biggest names and best developers here currently.
Second, what the devs do is way beyond 'hacks'. This is open source software which is basically rebuilding the os from the ground up.
In any case and as he said you have a mesmerize . So just flash mez builds. I would recommend glitched AOKP personally.

Nice stuff, but unless we'll have drivers there will be many bugs...
is not just about new drivers, is a question about how to fix it without source access.
If some things i heard are true, once a device gets ICS, wont be hard of it getting JB on it either.
Edit:
it still a challenge tho, port a SDK system dump, or the GN's. may the Tech Gods watch over us in this quest.(lol)
SDK ports have never worked well. Source codes + proper drivers on the other hand...

I wasn't saying it can't be done, just that it won't run as well as one built from source. But by all means, please do try. If anything, the experience of getting it to run (or not) might help once the sources are out, not to mention the fun in trying.
