usb charging by your laptop or PC - Galaxy Tab 7.7 General

Hi, everybody.
i just buy a samsung galaxy tab 7.7 and just noticed only can be charged by using the power socket provided by samsung.
now i found a way to charge your tab by your laptop or PC through samsung STANDARD USB DATA CABLE cable.
First, download the software (ASUS Ai Charger) attached:
Second, just install and enjoy to charge your tablet through use cable.
FYI, battery indicator still showing no charging but actually it is charging.
you can check after one minute by viwing the remaining power up.
Thanks.

Is this software just raise yr usb port mah to certain amount?
If so, will this harm the computer?

My tab charges when plugged into my computer without that (or any similar software, only Kies and AOSP USB drivers installed). It doesn't show charging but the charge definitely goes up. Does that software actually make it charge faster? I have to say, I'm pretty dubious.

I would recommended getting the following adapter, I originally bought it for my original tab and was able to charge via the laptop with no problem. It charges as fast as the wall charger.

Ai Charger turns any PC into a flexible power-up station for popular Apple devices through a simple USB connector, extending their usability and benefit in every lifestyle. Charging goes up to and smoother while you do your work or have fun – whether at home or on the go. The Ai Charger software is available for a variety of chipsets and motherboards from ASUS as well as all desktops, so just click and prepare for even more enjoyment! .
my tablet is charged well.
Thanks

Thanks for the info.

Though it must be noted that you need an Asus motherboard for this, my Gigabyte provides 1A front USB ports thats where I charge the Tab7.7 I'll try if there is any difference real world difference if I plug it into one of the regular USB ports.

I accidentally found out I was able to charge from my Mac without using this special software as follow:
I bought an external battery, New Trent IMP99D (Amazon Link) and it came with a special USB extension cable (picture below) that is designed for the Tab 10.1. If I plug the GT7+ directly to the IMP99D without using the extension cable, NO charging takes place. However, if I use the extension cable, charging works.
I connect the extension cable to my MacBook Air, connect the GT7+ charging cable and the tablet and... VOILA.. it's charging! HoneyComb even reported that it is an "AC Charging" and it charge pretty fast.
So you can either
a). Buy the battery and it comes with the cable
b). Buy JUST THE CABLE, model IMP44B (manufacturer link here)

I've ordered thus one. will see uf will charge the 6800 with the 30pin cable to computer usb...

If you just want to charge via pc you can turn off your device, this way will work.

I recharge the battery using my pc all the time... just connect it with the USB cable and that's it... no software or anything like that... The tablet battery Icon does have a strange X on it but it still charges the phone (AHHuummm, Tablet) just like the electric plug thingy...

yes... u r rite... itz a MICRO USB...
But it can't supply power to a USB device, so it can't be used like a PC USB port. It's only good for recharging and syncing.
so if i want to buy an additional wire, i look for a USB to MICRO USB wire right? no need to buy from HTC right?
cause i saw one usb that is smaller but it doesn't fit.. is there a MINI USB port too?
am confused

Erm yes it can,
Actually better take the device with you. Sellers here told me there is like 7 different very similar connectors. However this one should be the standard micro USB, which is supposed to be universal charger/sync cable in the future (at least in EU).
And yes, of course, there is mini USB. And there even are more versions of mini USB, for example HTC used their own.
You had better use HTC cables. HD2 is microusb, but not all microusb cables are good for HD2. Like iPhone, it takes a large charging current, and many no brand cables cannot do it. I've got a third party cable that syncs only, but if charged from the PC, the HD2 will say that the charging current is too small. Battery actually drops when I connect HD2 to PC using this cable (because my options set it that backlight is always on when HD2 is connected). Other combinations are OK:
original cable + AC plug: charging OK
original cable + PC: charging OK
third party cable + AC plug: charging OK
third party cable + PC: "insufficient charging current"
Be careful with cables- you'd be better to buy the genuine HTC version.
Many USB/MicroUSB cables are for charging only, and don't have the data pins connected. Thats OK if you just want to charge it while you are away from your main PC or power supply.
You can also buy a miniUSB/MicroUSB adapter for charging using and older miniSUB charger, but again these don't have the data pins connected.
I bought a number of 3rd party USB to microUSB cables a month ago for sync and charging (office, PC, bedside charging), so far so good... no issues (maybe I'm lucky). The OmniaII uses the same connector, so I'm using the HTC car charger to charge both.
I bought Nokia's cable (for E71,N97,etc.) and it work just fine with charging from laptop. much cheaper than HTC in here.
if you are going for the cheapo option...
http://shop.ebay.co.uk/?_from=R40&_trksid=m38&_nkw=MICRO+USB+SYNC%26+CHARGE+CABLE+for+HTC+HD2+HD+2+Leo+T8585
i got a couple from ebay - arrived the next day. - charge/sync fine.
charger from iPhone
The iPhone charger coud be used for charging HD2. Just plug the microUSB cord instead of iPhones and ... voila. The same outputs
N86-8megapixel cable doesnt work..
So I managed to leave my HTC cable at work (2 days after getting the Telstra HD2 in OZ) and now I am on 4-5 days leave from work and really want to tinker with my phone. I think I may end up having to go back to work to collect the HTC cable - as below... challenge to get non-HTC cable to work.
I found that my wife's N86-8megapixel nokia has a similar micro-usb cable.
When connected to the PC the phone starts charging and the PC does the "doo-doop" sound a "appears" to connect to the phone, but active sync cannot detect the phone \ sync.
I see others have had success with nokia cables - I am wondering if there is something wierd going on.

Moded my usb charger, tab will charge anywhere !

Went to local electronic store and rigged up a mod for laptop charging, it basically charges with any usb port. Time to make a few spares .
one thing in the laptop it wont transfer data but it charges with my 1 dollar cigarette charger lol
why was this needed?
(new to tablets, waiting for an HTC tablet)
The tab doesn't charge when connected to a PC.
Any tutorials on how to make and items needed?

Interesting... Why is that?
are those resistors connected on pin 2 and 3? or better yet... got diagram?
The tab needs a power source that produces 5v @ 2 amps before it will charge properly.
Mine charges fine with my laptop...I beleive it only trickle charges, alot slower then the wall plugin, but it does charge.
wow 2 amps?
USB spec is max 5v 500mAh or 500mw? (2.5w ~) ? ... confused.
USB will charge the tab. However charge time is much longer due to lower USB power output.
When I go to Menu>Settings>About Tab> Status it says it isn't charging when it is connected to my laptop and the battery icon has the lightning bolt charging symbol but has an 'x' next to it so I assumed it was telling me the truth. BTW what clock widget is that in the OP picture?

While that is the USB spec for devices that are intended to use USB for data, occasionally you run into devices that will trickle charge off a 500mA connection but require a higher amp connection, usually provided by a specific wall wart plug, to rapid charge. The iPad had a similar function/issue if I'm not mistaken.

The galaxy tab charges just fine through usb connection on a pc or laptop, if ur doesn't u have two things to check, first are u using a usb2.0 or higher port and is your device set for usb storage file transfer, u can check in settings while connected to a pc or laptop, I charge my tab almost everyday using my pc as I transfer a lot of files daily, I don't even notice a difference in charge times compared to charging via an electrical outlet.

There's an existing thread about USB charging here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=845844
It includes schematics and other ideas regarding charging.

USB charging

I've noticed when I have my tablet plugged into my computer via USB it doesn't appear to be charging. The battery icon is showing a red lightning bolt. This is different than when I have my tab plugged into a wall socket.
Working as intended or..?
Your PC USB port can't supply enough juice (500ma max) compare to your wall socket (>2000ma) to charge while power the tab. Turn the tab off and your will get some charge off the USB port.

It's been charging my tab for about a month now with no problems at all, but I'm not here to argue, if you feel that you know more than I do. I've charged the tablet using that adapter from my laptop, PC, and Energizer XP4001 Power Pack.

(In fact using my Samsung Focus USB adapter for the outlet doesn't seem to work either... I need to use only the Samsung Tab USB adapter)

The focus charger is rated only about 700ma (same exact one as Captivate/SGS), marginablly better than PC USB. GT 10.1 has a rather large battery and hence it requires much larger charge current. You don't see any laptop get charged via USB, do you?

Is that through the orginal AC adapter or through PC USB?
Turning off the tablet and charging it via USB works, but it takes forever!

And you are not the only one who is waiting twice as long before his tab is fully charged. Then we can open a topic "Why does it take so long before my tab is charged?" As foxbat stated: You don't see any laptop get charged via USB, do you?
So if I say your adapter doesn't work its just as accurate as your answer it does work.

Hey, I'm not here to argue with you. I'm just an idiot.
Go about your business, and don't listen. I'm ok with that.
First of all, not all USB ports are equal.
On many modern PCs, the USB ports can deliver more than 500mA over USB if required. This is definitely true for pretty much all Macs since 2007, and quite a few mainboards from other manufacturers (see this article for some background).
Secondly, I've had one of these adaptors for quite a while now, and have used it regularly to charge my Galaxy Tab 7" which uses exactly the same power supply and cables as the GT 10.1. I can categorically state that when using this adaptor, it the GT7 does charge from a Macbook Air and a 5000mAh external battery that has a 1A output USB port labelled for an iPad.
Whilst it might not be as quick as the wall charger, it is definitely much faster than attempting to charge the GT7 from the same devices without the adaptor, even if the device is in use.
I've not formally tried to charge my GT10.1 with it yet, but I did check to see if the "not-charging" indicator went away (which it did), so I rather presume it will work much like the GT7.
Regards,
Dave

You don't need to embarrass yourself by saying you're an idiot, It's very childish and the second time you mention I'm supposed to be smarter then you. I'm sorry you take this so personally.

[Q] About the new (double) micro USB charger cable

So I just bought the Note 3 yesterday, nice beast.
I briefly talked about the new micro-USB cable with the seller, who explained that it was completely compatible with regular micro-USB cables (I was starting to be disappointed : just when everyone was adopting standard micro-USB, they had to change that !).
But, he added it was nevertheless recommended to use the new charger cable. We both wondered why exactly, what could happen if using only an old regular micro-USB cable. Time to achieve charging is different? Can it damage the battery or reduce its life ? Or is it just to get USB 3 high-speed transfer capability?
As I now have (after having Galaxy 1, 2, and 3) many micro-usb cable everywhere (office, car), I'd like to be able to safely use them.
Thanks for your answers/leads.

Your original micro USB cables are perfectly OK to use. If using an mains AC charger, your phone will charge at whatever rate that charger charges at (500ma, 1a, 2a etc) irrelevant of whether you use a micro USB cable or micro USB 3 cable.
The only diffrerence really, is when charging from your computers USB ports. With the micro USB 3 cable, your phone will charge at a faster rate.
I havent even used my micro USB 3 charger that came with my phone yet, ive just been using my old chargers.
Nothing adverse happens, just use em like you would in your previous phones.

It won't hurt anything...
Your phone will charge slower and you data transfers will be slower. That is all.

OTG and charging at the same time on YogaBook [YB1-X90F]Android?

I have a cable that works fine with my Shield tablet for this, connect a flash drive and power the tablet at the same time for instance, but not on this Lenovo.
Has this ability been disabled? and if is has, Is there a method to enable that in the software or is that hardware feature? I thought I recalled on previous stock roms on the Shield it could not do both but now it can.
Any insight is great, thanks.
It only works depending the charger... Doesn't with the included but with a 5V/3A Quick-Charge one...
your Shield has only 5200 mA compared to the 8500 mA the Yoga Book has...

I've tried a couple chargers now with no luck. The OTG cable will power the lenovo or let the USB device work, but it will not do both. I assume the one included with my Samsung S5 was a quick charge 2.0 as it was a main selling point of the phone at the time. Also I was pretty sure the Nvidia one was too? However neither of those will simultaneously charge and use a USB connected device. Again this same cable, OTG plus power, works just fine on the Nvidia tablet.
As with my Nvidia tablet I would plug in the charger, then cable from charger to OTG plus power cable, then plug into tablet. Tablet would show charging. Then connect whatever USB device I need. Tablet will show charging plus use or mount USB device.
Any ideas of what I am doing wrong? This isn't going to be something weird like the Yoga Book is wired different than every other device out there is it?

Well I am using it with a cheap 3A/5V Amazon branded charger and it works just fine...
I can only guess, but it seams your external drives consumes more than the Lenovo Book needs to be able to charge... If I am not wrong the Yoga Book needs at least 2.4A
I have a MopowerTK36W-4USB charger. It has two 1.2A 5V and two 2.4A 5V. This charger works fine with my Shield tablet to charge it while still allowing me to plug in flash drives, a 2.5 SSD, or gamepad controller. On the Yoga Book however it simply will not charge it. The idea the charger is the sore point here is driving me nuts. Shield tablet will use it's charger, the Mopower, and the Yoga's charger without issue and allow for USB devices at the same time. The Yoga Book just will not work like it.
I guess I will eliminate this OTG plus power cable as the possible culprit next and order a couple different of those cables. I can't quite grasp this generic cable working on the Shield but not on the Yoga Book either. Anyway just isn't making sense to me unless the Yoga Book, again the YB1-X90F, simply cannot charge and use USB devices at the same time? But you have stated you are able to do this so I am scratching my head here.
