[Q] How to use SIM from phone in tab 7.7 - Galaxy Tab 7.7 General

I have the SGNexus from verizon with LTE and the phone has a uSIM card in it. I just picked up the SGTab 7.7 last night but did not activate (bought outright).
So, I may wish to use the uSIM card in the tab but am aware that there are things the carriers look for to prevent this and I'd like to prevent them from screwing me. Again, I don't expect to do this much but would like the OPTION of doing so.
What do I need to do and not do to use the uSIM from my SGNexus in my SGTab 7.7?
Thanks,
Brian

So this is the VZW Tab 7.7? I was assuming they would bake the SIM into the tab to prevent exactly what you want to do, but I haven't actually seen one yet. In the P6800, there is a SIM slot along the same side as the microSD slot--does your tab have a SIM slot? If not, you won't be able to switch for sure. If there is a full-size SIM slot, you just need an adapter, which is easy to get or make (can probably get one for like $1 on ebay).
Also, I wouldn't expect VZW to allow your phone SIM to work on a tablet in any case. Even if you could put the SIM in, VZW will know from the IMEI that you are using a tablet and (I assume) force you to change plans or whatever.

At 5:10 of this silly unboxing video the SIM slot is in view.
http://www.androidauthority.com/verizon-samsung-galaxy-tab-7-7-lte-unboxing-59081/
I didn't think they would have an open SIM slot on the Verizon unit either, but maybe it has the capability of being unlocked?

Interesting. So yeah, OP: go get a SIM adapter, plug in your SIM, and see what Verizon says to you! Good luck.

Before I go that route I'd like to make sure I avoid anything that would give me away. I'm not sure that's possible but since there are a lot of smart folks on this board I'll wait a bit to give it a shot.
I think the thing I'd most likely use it for is in-car navigation on the longer trips. I have the Verizon SGNexus with LTE and I have the hotspot option so I could use it in that mode to drive the navigation on the tab so maybe swapping in the SIM wouldn't be that big a deal.
Still, it would be nice to have the option...

It's not possible to hide the fact that you're using a tab 7.7 from Verizon unless you're willing to try to change your IMEI (and messing with /efs is pretty dangerous). I'm not saying it's totally impossible, but it'd be difficult at the very least. As you say, there are a lot of smart people here, so maybe someone will work out a way--but I wouldn't hold my breath. Still, no way to know if it'll work unless you try it.
Personally, I bought the wifi version because tethering to a phone is easy and a lot cheaper--save $100 at the start, plus no second data plan at absurd US carriers' prices. I think many of the people who bought the international 3G version were thinking the same as you--they can swap their phone SIM in if they want. However, the unlocked version identifies on the network just like any phone, unlike the Verzion version, which is locked down by Verizon and doesn't even ship with phone software.

I toyed with the idea of importing a wifi only version but decided I didn't want to lose the next door support if I have a problem so I went with Verizon and so far as I can tell they will only offer the LTE version. If putting my phone SIM in it is not going to work or work for long then it will be just a wifi only version albeit about $100 more expensive. I think I could reclaim some of the difference on resell though...
I really hope ICS is coming soon as I don't much like HC...

Forgive my ignorance guys but what is this verizon with LTE?
I am not in the U.S., for me the P6800 model works with a normal GSM SIM or 3G SIM out of the box.

Verizon is a US carrier that does not use GSM. The Verizon version of the GT7.7 has different hardware then the standard GT7.7 and it is unclear if you can just swap the Verizon LTE sim from one Verizon device to their GT7.7 and have full functionality.

LTE is the reason why a simcard is utilized. I'm pretty certain that rest of the cdma/evd0 doesn't utilize the simcard

[Q] T-Mobile SIM w/ 7.7

After reading many posts about using SIM cards I was wondering if I could use my T-Mobile Hot Spot SIM card in a 6800? Has anyone used a T-Mobile SIM in their 6800?
I bought the 6810 thinking I would just use the Hot Spot to connect when taveling.
Now I may have some buyer's remorse that I didn't get the 6800 and insert the SIM from the Hot Spot thus only having to carry only one device and not two.
Otherwise I love the 6810 WiFi only.
My Hot Spot is a pay as you go plan so I buy a data plan when/if I need it
Mine is the HK version from Negri.

OK, this post was really confusing...
Let's start over. The P6810 is the Wifi only model and the P6800 is the 3G model.
Which one did you buy, and what is your question/issue?

So you have the 6800? That's the model that has a cell radio (and a SIM slot). The 6810 is WiFi only and you can't use that with a SIM card.
At any rate, you're probably not going to get anymore than 200 Kbps speeds on T-Mobile with the 6800.
Are you just lamenting that you paid more for the 6800 since you don't use the SIM card with it? What is the issue here?

OK, that makes more sense.
To answer your question, yes, you can use your data-only T-Mobile SIM card in a P6800 with no issues. However, due to the hardware in the P6800, you won't be able to take advantage of T-Mobile 3G; you'll most likely be stuck on EDGE, which is much slower. T-Mobile uses 1700mhz AWS for its 3G service in most of America, and the P6800 does not support this frequency band, unfortunately. However, some T-Mobile users on the west coast have been reporting that T-Mobile is starting to roll out 1900mhz 3G service in certain areas. The P6800 does support this frequency, and thus you would get T-Mobile 3G service if you happen to be in one of those areas.
One suggestion I would make, considering that you are a pay-as-you-go customer, is this:
If you ever wanted to trade your P6810 for a P6800 instead, AT&T GoPhone offers a $50/month pay-as-you-go plan with unlimited everything (texts, MMS, voice, data); the whole kit and kabootle. AT&T's network is fully compatible with the 3G 7.7
If you had this, and especially if you use Google Voice, people could call or text one number (your Google Voice number), and you could get everything on both your tablet AND your phone simultaneously.
Food for thought
Alternatively, if you're happy with your P6810 as it is, you can always just tether to your phone for data access on the go. Additionaly, assuming your phone is an Android device, I would highly recommend an app called Tablet Talk. With this app, you can synchronize, over Bluetooth or wifi, all your SMS between phone and tablet. Basically, in real time, as soon as you receive a message on your phone, you can read and respond to it on your tablet. Also, the phone keeps a log of any SMS you make from your tablet in its own native SMS app as if you had responded right from your phone. Pretty nifty stuff! Oh, and it also shows caller ID on your tablet when someone calls too! Totally worth the purchase!
Hope this has helped!
Awesome! Yeah that is the info I was looking for. Now I don't feel so bad about my 6810 purchase...I am on the east coast so wouldn't want to have to deal with being on the EDGE.
BIG THANKS!!

Hey, let's revisit this because now that the Samsung Note is working on T-Mobile's 3G/4G USA perhaps the hardware is capable of doing such since the Note was originally thought to NOT support the 1700 frequency bands.
Could someone try flashing the same modem.bin's that enabled 3G/4G on the Galaxy Note on their Galaxy Tab 7.7?
Please, please, please try. Hopefully no boot loops or stuff like that happens. But, don't hold me responsible for any troubles it may cause. Here's the link to the Samsung Note hack for T-Mobile 3G/4G:

That's the LTE Note (I717), not the original Note (N7000). The N7000 has the same SoC and frequency bands--and presumably identical cellular hardware--as the P6800. The I717 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC with integrated baseband that does support pentaband UMTS in hardware, and there are alternative radios that support AWS, sourced from the T989 (T-Mobile US GS2). Nobody has ever found a radio that works on the N7000 that supports AWS however, so even if the hardware does have the support (which is unlikely), it can't be exposed.
Thanks Teiglin! That is an answer that had eluded me with all of the articles I have read. Geesh I'm frustrated but at least that makes more sense now. I just want to get a larger than 4.5" screen device like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0" that I'm using now. Of course, it needs to be able to make phone calls and work on the TMobile USA network.

Another bad news for Sprint users and ...

another reason to believe that Sprint GN2 may not have SIM slot.
We already know that previously Sprint Photon Q (made by Motorola) have SIM internally and unremovable. Now we know that there is another Sprint device Optimus G (made by LG) that will have the exactly similar design as far as SIM slot goes. (source here)
With the previous picture purposely a leak of Sprint GN2 device showing no SIM slot, this is likely to be a Sprint own evil doing.
And BTW I'm one very pissed about this. I 'll definitely sending a snail mail to Sprint Executive Office about how pissed I'm as a consumer regarding turning an international capable device into useless crap once the device come out. I go to Thailand every year or so to visit family member and when I am there I would definitely want to use SIM there because of the local number I can use. With unremovable SIM this is no longer possible. I'm very disappointed.
That's sucks, although I don't go over seas that much.. It would be nice to have. Tell them you Ben kohn bah and your red shirt friends don't approve of this.

It appears that this is the route they are going now. I wonder why that is? Does using the embedded SIM force you to use a Sprint International plan, for out of country use?
pardon my ignorance, but isn't the "international" version GSM...and sprint's, obviously gonna be CDMA? and as such, no SIM card?
---at least i've always assumed that SIM cards is something GSM phones use, while CDMA phones do not.

You're right, but some CDMA phones have radios that support at least EDGE on GSM so you can still text and make phone calls overseas (and if you unlock, you could run them on Tmo and AT&T).
However, the question is if the radios will even support the EDGE GSM bands... probably not though.

All of Verizon's LTE phones have a SIM card slot and all of their recent phones also have GSM/HSPA radios for global roaming. I believe some can even run on T-Mobile and ATT's frequencies if you are lucky. But LTE will be Verizon only.
would it be possible to flash a Verizon Note 2 to Sprint in order to have one with a SIM card?
There are so much of competition in market, they skipping features users can easily find alternative. Bad for users but too bad for manufactures. They should understand
Not sure if you saw, but someone has figured out how to remove the embedded SIM in the Photon Q and replace it.

Yea, but whose brave soul gonna do that on not even a month old GN2. And that's beside the point. Seriously, to me it seem like it would cost the manufacturor even more to make the SIM embeded than regular one.

I mean how many sprint phones even support GSM EDGE bands?
I don't use Sprint, so I don't know for a fact, but don't their phones usually only run on CDMA (I've only ever heard of Verizon CDMA "world-phones")
I know that the old Touch Pro 2(wm6) and Photon 4G both have dual GSM/CDMA chip in them and they both have SIM slot.
whats the significance in not having a sim card cause it seems like a good thing to me. unless its like tmobile and att network where you can get gsm phones
The significant isn't about whether it have SIM or not. I mean for most people in the US I think we can get by w/o it. I mean it's like once every year or two that people would go outside the country and can make use of it. So it wouldn't be like a final decision whether to get one w/ or w/o SIM. And you are right there are also AT&T and T-mobile. But I can say the for some people it's about the network in their local, while for other it may simply be about not going back to the service they have bad experience with. To me it's about cost, since I'm a Sprint SERO Premium account owner. But very, it's more about why walking the low path? The phone would have been technically capable of it, the chipset, modem, antana support it. This is more about why purposely redesign it to lock it down to a specific network, greed, basically.

Yes, the Sprint HTC Touch Pro 2 most certainly had a SIM card slot. I had a few of them before making the jump to android with my EVO 4G. It was a nice feature to have on a "Business" phone, which is what the TP2 was geared towards. The productivity of the Note 2 also can be geared for Business users, a SIM slot would be of great use.
Ohh okk that makes sense. Cause I never go out of the country so its not that big of a deal for me. But I guess I'd you travel a lot it would be better to have one

Apparently Verizon figured out how to do it properly as they previously have had CDMA, but now allow removable SIM cards for their LTE world-phones. Sprint is now the only provider that locks their phones down like this- it's very frustrating. I am paying for a brand new device that is inherently compatible as a world-phone, but I must buy a separate device to use over seas so that I don't get raped with Sprint's international calling/data plans. RIDICULOUS! These kind of tactics are out of the apple playbook- limit the options of your customers, so you can squeeze em.

nexus 7 unlock version for future verizon use

hi, i want to purchase the nexus 7 lte but it's important that i be able to use it with my existing verizon data plan (eventually). i've read the threads and understand they will be certifying it (eventually). i don't want to wait to purchase it so i want to make sure i'm buying the correct model (for verizon activation later). i noticed there are 3 versions being sold at google playstore: 1) with AT&T sim, 2) with T-Mobile sim 3) Unlocked. would the unlock version be the correct device to get or will they be coming out with another model, once verizon completes their testing and certifies it? thanks for any advice.

I purchased the Google Nexus 7 LTE (2013) which came with the T-Mobile SIM.
I took my microSIM card out of my Samsung Galaxy S4 (verizon) and put it into my Google Nexus 7 LTE (2013) and verizon LTE data worked fine. I forwarded my Verizon phone number to my Google Voice number, and used the N7LTE as my phone for a week. However, I found that GrooveIP and Talkatone apps would sometimes miss incoming google voice calls even when I was using WiFi for data. So, I moved my verizon microSIM card back to my phone.
It is my understanding that all three models of N7LTE offerred by Google are the exact same tablet. The only difference is which promotional microSIM card is included in the box.
Good Luck,
Howard
P.S. I do not know if Verizon can see that I am using the phone microSIM card in the N7LTE tablet. If Verizon can see this, then it is possible Verizon can take actions like dropping data service or cancelling my account or whatever else one can imagine. I do not know if Verizon can see which device the microSIM card is installed in. I also don't know if Verizon cares or not.

I made that post for new buyers like you. All 3 versions work on all 3 carriers. Buy the t-mobile one since theyre the same price and keep the sim with free 2gb data for a rainy day. You can use your existing sim (microsim) in your new tablet until it is certified, which, knowing verizon, could be a long wait. Just know that if you have a nanosim or a traditional sim card then you will need a cheap adapter.

Switching between phones on AT&T?

I currently have Verizon and I'm thinking of switching to At&T and getting the Oneplus 2. I'm kind of disappointed in the battery life and the lack of NFC so I'm on the fence. But if I switch to AT&T and get say the Galaxy Note 5 when it comes out and then purchase a Oneplus 2. Could use both phones just by swapping the sim card back and forth? I always see articles on phone review websites with the author saying he uses one phone as a daily driver and another phone for other things. I'd love to have two phones and just switch back and forth but all with one number.
Thanks

Yes, you should be able to switch sim cards between phones with no issues. Be sure to check the apn in settings to reflect att network.
Be advised, that att will charge some "new" contract fees for new customers starting August 1st. Not sure what the new fees are specifically but I've heard it will be the most expensive thus far in the US.
Good luck.

Thanks yea I read that yesterday I think it's $45. I'm ok with that, it's not as bad as Verizon making you pay 75% of the retail price of a phone and hand it in to them in order to upgrade in the lease plan. I have the Note 4 and it was $700 retail and they want $524 in order for me to upgrade. I might has well pay the full $700 and keep the phone and sell it than pay $524 and give it back to them.
I'm on AT&T and have had no issue swapping the SIM to use multiple phones.

I'm on ATT and have the OnePlus Two - they do not currently support it on LTE/4G network so data is slooooooow

I have the international version - and the phone is not the issue. ATT told me that they do not currently support the phone so they throttle it

Wow!!! That's definitely a deciding factor for some to not get the phone.

You might wanna give this thread a look,I'm sure someone on AT&T will be glad to assist you.

If nothing else,it's a good read,as making sure the OP6T is a good choice & all the AT&T functions you want/need will work (WI-FI Calling/VoLTE/VVM,etc....).
Typically, you shouldn't have to do a thing as far as setting the APN.
However,I'm not sure about VoLTE/VVM/WI-FI Calling working,or,if it does, requires any account adjustments/account settings changes/etc..... by AT&T Customer Care.
I have cricket (owned and operated by at&t) and as far as I know service is basically the same. All I had to do was insert the Sim from my old phone and after about a minute everything was working.
I have AT&T and when my 6T arrived I inserted my sim and received service with no issues. For lack of a better phrase it should be plug and play. I did not have AT&T for anything.

That's what I figured, judging by the short time I used AT&T Prepaid a few years back.
What sux is, at least browsing their site as a non-customer, they (AT&T) aren't exactly clear on that.
They try to make it sound as if you need to order (buy) a new SIM Card to use in a different phone, whether it's one of theirs or, a BYOD.
Is Wi-Fi Calling/VoLTE/VVM working on your OP6T w/AT&T?

Nope. They don't allow it on unlocked devices except iPhones and a small selection of Android devices. I have tried a few of the suggestions in various forum posts but none work. It's not a big deal to me because I've always had unlocked devices since I switched to AT&T and I live in an area with for reception so I'm not really missing anything that I rely on.
