Switching between phones on AT&T? - OnePlus 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I currently have Verizon and I'm thinking of switching to At&T and getting the Oneplus 2. I'm kind of disappointed in the battery life and the lack of NFC so I'm on the fence. But if I switch to AT&T and get say the Galaxy Note 5 when it comes out and then purchase a Oneplus 2. Could use both phones just by swapping the sim card back and forth? I always see articles on phone review websites with the author saying he uses one phone as a daily driver and another phone for other things. I'd love to have two phones and just switch back and forth but all with one number.
Thanks

Yes, you should be able to switch sim cards between phones with no issues. Be sure to check the apn in settings to reflect att network.
Be advised, that att will charge some "new" contract fees for new customers starting August 1st. Not sure what the new fees are specifically but I've heard it will be the most expensive thus far in the US.
Good luck.

Thanks yea I read that yesterday I think it's $45. I'm ok with that, it's not as bad as Verizon making you pay 75% of the retail price of a phone and hand it in to them in order to upgrade in the lease plan. I have the Note 4 and it was $700 retail and they want $524 in order for me to upgrade. I might has well pay the full $700 and keep the phone and sell it than pay $524 and give it back to them.

I'm on AT&T and have had no issue swapping the SIM to use multiple phones.

OnePlus Two and ATT
I'm on ATT and have the OnePlus Two - they do not currently support it on LTE/4G network so data is slooooooow

Are you using the Chinese version?? International version should be LTE capable. If you do have the international version, maybe check the apn settings??

I have the international version - and the phone is not the issue. ATT told me that they do not currently support the phone so they throttle it

Switch from ATT Galaxy 2 to International?

Hi -
I currently have the AT&T version, but was thinking about making the jump to the International version. There is definately more activity from a development standpoint for the International version.
Can I use the International one on AT&T? Is there any know issues I should be aware of prior to doing this? For example, can I still get H+?
Thanks.

Are you talking about switching to a Galaxy S II 9100?
Tons of people are using them in the states before the AT&T versions were announced/released. I believe they are nearly identical in terms of network/band support (shy of the LTE model Skyrocket)
Yes. I would switch the at&t Samsung galaxy s II to the international version i9100.
I thought people had issues getting h+ to work though.
I'm guessing I should just be able to move the similar card over.
Thanks

I have the International version and have been using it on AT&T for like 4 months now. If you are going to get a new phone, get the Galaxy Nexus

You shouldn't have any problems; I've been using the international version on AT&T for 6 months. The only area where you might have some issues is with ROMs -- a ROM package made for the AT&T version probably won't work on the international version.
It works perfectly well, just a warning if you purchase the white model. Att recognizes the imei as a blackberry for some reason. I had to call them four times and push them until they finally let me keep the media net plan.

I've been using the international version on AT&T since July. Only problem is that it drops signal after a phone call and randomly at other times. It come right back up tho. I don't know if this is due to my area or what or even my phone singularly.

I have been using the GT-I9100 for a few months now without issue, it was a little rough at first trying to get the correct APN provisioned but after dealing with a Supervisor who had half a clue I was able to have the correct APN provisioned and things have been great ever since.
However, since you already have a Galaxy S2 at&t has already provisioned your account with correct APN, so you should be good to go form that perspective.
I really like the GT-I9100 and am really happy with it, I came back from London on the 20th and played with a Galaxy Nexus while I was over there. Very impressive phone but not a major step up from the SGS2 IMHO, added to that I believe that ICS on the SGS2 is going to be pretty slick as the Exynos/Mali combo is just as good or maybe even slightly better than the TI OMAP/Power VR combo on the GNex.
Dan
I'm a grandfathered $30 unlimited data subscriber. Is the only thing I would need to do is move the SIM from current AT&T Galaxy S II to the International i9100? Will I need to call customer service to have them switch anything?
Thanks.

Nothing at all. I bought the internationAl the day it was released in the UK. I pulled the Sim from my inspire placed it in my gs2. Rooted about 15 minutes later and haven't had an issue yet. Play with apns depending on your area. I have had little success with major gains but mainly due to living in the major tristate area(too many users)
Edit: don't call and give them your imei. It changes nothing and has changed nothing with my acct
Shouldn't be hard to find the AT&T APN online. I did it with Virgin. When I installed a rom using full wipe, it erased APN. Same as getting a new phone really. A quick google search and manual APN inputs and I was back. You shouldn't need to do it though...first time I booted my phone up after I bought it, it picked the service up instantly.

That simple, remove the sim from your current phone (I777) and insert it into your new phone (GT-I9100) and you should be good to go.
I am also Grandfathered into the Unlimited Plan and to date have had zero issues.
One warning, if you plan on buying the White GT-I9100, that seems to come up in at&t Mobility's system as a Blackberry and the computer will try and provision your account for Blackberry use.

Great responses all! Appreciate the input.
I was only planning to buy the black one. Not having much luck on Ebay right now...

Another bad news for Sprint users and ...

another reason to believe that Sprint GN2 may not have SIM slot.
We already know that previously Sprint Photon Q (made by Motorola) have SIM internally and unremovable. Now we know that there is another Sprint device Optimus G (made by LG) that will have the exactly similar design as far as SIM slot goes. (source here)
With the previous picture purposely a leak of Sprint GN2 device showing no SIM slot, this is likely to be a Sprint own evil doing.
And BTW I'm one very pissed about this. I 'll definitely sending a snail mail to Sprint Executive Office about how pissed I'm as a consumer regarding turning an international capable device into useless crap once the device come out. I go to Thailand every year or so to visit family member and when I am there I would definitely want to use SIM there because of the local number I can use. With unremovable SIM this is no longer possible. I'm very disappointed.
That's sucks, although I don't go over seas that much.. It would be nice to have. Tell them you Ben kohn bah and your red shirt friends don't approve of this.

Unfortunately most sprint users including myself really don't care that much although it would be great to have definitely not a deal breaker for most and most won't care. I feel your pain as I do go over seas but I don't use my sprint phone for over seas as I use my dumb phone a flip phone unlocked cheapo for traveling. But I'm in ur corner for *****in and moaning hopefully one day it will be different either way just get the damn device in stock and I'm happy

It appears that this is the route they are going now. I wonder why that is? Does using the embedded SIM force you to use a Sprint International plan, for out of country use?
pardon my ignorance, but isn't the "international" version GSM...and sprint's, obviously gonna be CDMA? and as such, no SIM card?
---at least i've always assumed that SIM cards is something GSM phones use, while CDMA phones do not.

You're right, but some CDMA phones have radios that support at least EDGE on GSM so you can still text and make phone calls overseas (and if you unlock, you could run them on Tmo and AT&T).
However, the question is if the radios will even support the EDGE GSM bands... probably not though.

All of Verizon's LTE phones have a SIM card slot and all of their recent phones also have GSM/HSPA radios for global roaming. I believe some can even run on T-Mobile and ATT's frequencies if you are lucky. But LTE will be Verizon only.
would it be possible to flash a Verizon Note 2 to Sprint in order to have one with a SIM card?
There are so much of competition in market, they skipping features users can easily find alternative. Bad for users but too bad for manufactures. They should understand
Not sure if you saw, but someone has figured out how to remove the embedded SIM in the Photon Q and replace it.

Yea, but whose brave soul gonna do that on not even a month old GN2. And that's beside the point. Seriously, to me it seem like it would cost the manufacturor even more to make the SIM embeded than regular one.

I mean how many sprint phones even support GSM EDGE bands?
I don't use Sprint, so I don't know for a fact, but don't their phones usually only run on CDMA (I've only ever heard of Verizon CDMA "world-phones")
I know that the old Touch Pro 2(wm6) and Photon 4G both have dual GSM/CDMA chip in them and they both have SIM slot.
whats the significance in not having a sim card cause it seems like a good thing to me. unless its like tmobile and att network where you can get gsm phones
The significant isn't about whether it have SIM or not. I mean for most people in the US I think we can get by w/o it. I mean it's like once every year or two that people would go outside the country and can make use of it. So it wouldn't be like a final decision whether to get one w/ or w/o SIM. And you are right there are also AT&T and T-mobile. But I can say the for some people it's about the network in their local, while for other it may simply be about not going back to the service they have bad experience with. To me it's about cost, since I'm a Sprint SERO Premium account owner. But very, it's more about why walking the low path? The phone would have been technically capable of it, the chipset, modem, antana support it. This is more about why purposely redesign it to lock it down to a specific network, greed, basically.

Yes, the Sprint HTC Touch Pro 2 most certainly had a SIM card slot. I had a few of them before making the jump to android with my EVO 4G. It was a nice feature to have on a "Business" phone, which is what the TP2 was geared towards. The productivity of the Note 2 also can be geared for Business users, a SIM slot would be of great use.
Ohh okk that makes sense. Cause I never go out of the country so its not that big of a deal for me. But I guess I'd you travel a lot it would be better to have one

Apparently Verizon figured out how to do it properly as they previously have had CDMA, but now allow removable SIM cards for their LTE world-phones. Sprint is now the only provider that locks their phones down like this- it's very frustrating. I am paying for a brand new device that is inherently compatible as a world-phone, but I must buy a separate device to use over seas so that I don't get raped with Sprint's international calling/data plans. RIDICULOUS! These kind of tactics are out of the apple playbook- limit the options of your customers, so you can squeeze em.

Questions about the Nexus 6P before I buy (Cricket Wireless)

Hey guys
I was up until recently the proud owner of an LG G4. Details of what happened to it can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/general/expository-thread-bootloop-t3313771
As possibly getting the G4 fixed will take months, I'm (unfortunately) in the market for a new phone.
I use Cricket Wireless which means I have to buy all my phones upfront; This isn't bad though, as I view all my devices as investments that should be future-proof for ideally atleast 2-2.5 years. I had hoped that with buying a G4, I would be able to sustain it for 2+ years. But this doesn't look like it will be the case...
I'm looking to get a Nexus 6P. It looks like the best option for someone like me who needs a phone that is factory unlocked by default and has a good compatibility with all most all cellular providers In the US. So I just have a couple of questions:
1. Since the Nexus 6P is factory unlocked by default and has such a wide range of supported bands, it should work with Cricket (being that it is an ATT MVNO), right? (even if this seems obvious, I would like some reassurance before I buy).
2. What has been everyone's experienced with Google's protection, warranty, coverage, and RMA policies? This is very important in making sure that I'll always have SOMEONE to talk to if my phone breaks.
3. What's the situation on wireless hotspot with the 6P? I know its included in the OS, but it apparently doesn't work for all carriers. I've heard some people complain that it doesn't work on ATT, Cricket, and that they've used the SIM tool trick (from the 5X) to get hotspot to work (this was actually in another thread here at XDA).
4. Supposedly rooting your phone makes hotspot really easy and accessible, and I've heard that rooting/flashing the 6P is harmless and very very easy to do. Anyone can comment on this?
5. Are there any large, production-scale issues with the Nexus 6P? It's been a couple of months since its release so I hope a lot of the flaws that were present with the earlier manufactured devices are gone. (Once again, I'm trying to avoid an issue like Bootloop which had happened to many of the early adopters of the G4)
6. Finally, are there any other phones that others would recommend that come factory unlocked by default? I could buy a Galaxy S6 from Cricket, and then I would have the support of my carrier and all, but I definitely don't think the GS6 is a better phone than the 6P...
Thank you guys for reading!

1. Yes, it works with every carrier in the USA.
2. Mine hasn't broken, so I dunno
3. Out of the box, hotspot is determined by carrier. Install a custom rom, however, and they almost always have modified the build.prop to use hotspot with any carrier.
4. It's very easy, and it's even easier if you shell out a few bucks for Skipsoft Toolkit.
5. I've heard of bent 6Ps, but mine hasn't done that.
6. Nexus and OnePlusOne are both solid AT&T compatible devices that allow you to choose any carrier (except for CDMA on the OPO.) I would not get an MVNO branded phone unless I planned on being with that MVNO until the phone is outdated. The resale value is notoriously terrible when MVNOs get their hands on them.

This is great advice! Thank you. I totally forgot about OnePlus; aren't all their phones GSM factory unlocked?
Quality and durability, so far, have been great for me. I switched from Virgin to T-mobile when I got it, so hotspot is included with my service and it has worked pretty well the couple of times I tried it. Google pay is handy so I don't have to whip my cards out to pay for stuff (just got a free Chromecast for using it 10 times this month). I am using stock ROM with out root (I just haven't really needed it for anything bad enough yet). There are a ton of cases, screen protectors, etc. available for the 6P. No TouchWiz is also a wonderful thing.
My partner did have an issue using speaker phone on his unit (we both pre-ordered and got early units). Google customer service with pretty good. He didn't want to be without a phone during the exchange, so they did hit his card for the purchase price again, but the replacement arrived two days later and within 5 days the money was credited back to him. We both have the extended warranties that say they'll replace the phones even if we break them or drown them, etc. for two years. Haven't had to test them on that so far, but it's good to have. It does cost you $80 deductible every time you need a replacement outside of manufacturers warranty.
I'd say the 6P is pretty solid investment, especially with the extended warranty. Even you wear the dam thing out in 23 months, cash in that warranty and get a fresh one. Also, check out T-mobiles no contract plans. I had planned on getting another pre-paid plan, but they offer a hell of deal for $50 post-paid yet no contract....You'll not likely run out data and you can turn their "Binge On" BS off. Good luck!
I would advise against getting the G4, as the LTE radios were carrier-locked, so at the time when I switched to Cricket back in June, I would've been **** outta luck. I have the 6P right now, Note 4 prior to the 6P, and I've had no problem fully utilizing the phone on Cricket's network. Your phone will be plug-and-play ready to go, as in popping in the SIM card (nano SIM), and you'll be good. Cricket sells the Nano SIM with Micro and standard sized adapter. Yes, your data download speed will be throttled to 8MBPS, but it's still plenty enough to get stuff done. If you're worried about the data cap (10GB on Pro plan), you can just reset your plan in the middle of the month once you reach your data cap, and the data counter will reset on Cricket's end. I use about 40GB a month, roughly. No worries there, either. Have fun =)
I use it on cricket and it works fine. I use it in NYC and have lte everywhere. Hotspot works on my stock rooted nexus 6p. Let me know if you have any questions.

Supposedly if you pop out the SIM card, pop it back in, and then try to go into hotspot while its authenticating it'll work.

If you're worried about the data cap (10GB on Pro plan), you can just reset your plan in the middle of the month once you reach your data cap, and the data counter will reset on Cricket's end. I use about 40GB a month, roughly. No worries there, either. Have fun =)

I mean, I did get the G4 and I thought it worked very well with Cricket. The LTE speeds were good but so were the H+ ones lol. And I was an early adopter too.
How do you reset your plan?

I use it on cricket and it works fine. I use it in NYC and have lte everywhere. Hotspot works on my stock rooted nexus 6p. Let me know if you have any questions.

But hotspot didn't work unrooted right?
Not supposedly. It works. You just slide the sim tray out a little bit, put the enable hotspot setting on your screen, slide the tray back in, wait 3 seconds, and enable hotspot. Sometimes takes a few times for the timing, but always works.

Supposedly if you pop out the SIM card, pop it back in, and then try to go into hotspot while its authenticating it'll work.

(Historically) Which are the preferred carriers to purchase from?

CDMA - Verizon (not), Sprint?, U.S. Cellular?
GSM - AT&T?, T-Mobile?
As with a lot of other people on this site, I'm wondering which carrier will be best to pre-order from? I use Verizon but HATE the fact that most of the times it's one of the last carriers to be able to root the phone. I would also hate for this to turn into another Verizon Samsung Note 4 issue. Too bad the rumors where Samsung was going to start making phones that were both CDMA & GSM/UTMS were not true (as far as I am aware of).
This way since I'm now paying outright for my phones (roughly $800 bucks for 7 Edge), I could use it if I moved between carriers. After reading some other posts, now I'm wondering If I'm paying full price (paid in full), Will it be unlocked? I can't be the only one that feels RIPPED OFF when I pay $800 for a device and can't have root = have my own admin access. Can you imagine buying a laptop and not being able to install/change your own OS? not having admin rights/root?
I feel it's a MAJOR excuse for a carrier to even say - if we give you root & you change the ROM, then it makes it more difficult to help you. Guess what?!? I have not ever asked for help and nor would I... Besides, why couldn't they ask for the ROM version your using... if it matches theirs, they assist... if it doesn't, they tell you before they can assist you, you must put their ROM back on? Yes - there will always be that one person... but hey - if they were able to gain root and swap the ROM, they should be able to swap it back or pay to have it swapped back. OR at least pay for insurance and "accidentally drop it" and have it replaced.
It really bites that I (along with so many other people) want to pre-order the phone for several reasons (the free VR and games along with getting the phone first) but don't want to be SCREWED by one specific carrier and not be able to unlock the phone, root and replace the ROM.
So after all that - which carrier (historically) is the best to purchase from?
CDMA - Verizon (not), Sprint?, U.S. Cellular?
GSM - AT&T?, T-Mobile?
Additional INFO - I'm also about to call Verizon to confirm - But I read 2-3 months ago that Verizon will now allow another carrier's phone on their network (if it is CDMA). If that's true, then why not purchase the phone thru Sprint or US Cellular if historically those phones have been rooted easier than Verizon? I've been on Verizon for so long, that I'm really not sure...
Comments? suggestions?
What I'm going to do is pre-order from eBay.
The phones have a hell of a mark-up (+$200/$300), but there are unlocked Qualcomms that are usually rooted much more quickly with better support for AOSP.
I hate paying that much, but I'm going to have this phone for years, and the hassle from carrier-branded phones just isn't worth it.
Edit: You should still be able to add insurance and such through your carrier too, depending on their policies.
Didn't have an issue insuring previous phones with AT&T even though they were bought off-plan through other retailers.
It is slightly cheaper when buying it from Best Buy, $779 vs $792. I saw the T-mobile version supports band 13 LTE, but I didn't see anything about CDMA support.
I also did follow up with Verizon about placing a phone on their network that was not purchased from Verizon. They said it is currently limited to 2 phones - I don't have the names because I didn't care much......they couldn't tell me the S7 would be added to the list. So does that mean people on Verizon are STUCK purchasing from Verizon?
For my s6 edge I much preferred the unlocked UK version over the US AT&T version. (Which is why I asked in another thread when we can expect to see unlocked international versions).
AT&T not only added crazy bloat but removed really cool features from the phone. Just took em right out. They also removed Samsung deals/bundles from the phone (there was a MS suite and a free TB of storage or something removed). And in exchange for screwing with the phone they had crazy delays on updates (because they had to re-remove and re-screw the phone).
Coming from iPhone I just can't deal with carrier customizations. Unlocked for life. (crazy that Apple is unlocked now and Android isn't -- bizarro world).

Nexus devices are the exception (6, 5X and 6P). The problem with VZW and Sprint is that they use proprietary CDMA technology for voice communication. You can bring just about any device to their networks and have data but you won't be able to make voice calls in most cases.

Tmobile period, not going to lock the boot loader you'll be able to root (provided the community finds a way, but it's a snap dragon and unlocked bootloader so they will most likely before it even releases. ) second if you don't want tmo service you can still root it and use am at&t sim so there's that.

How I unlocked my TMobile OnePlus 6T

I called Customer service and told them I bought the phone cash from T-Mobile store and it doesn't make sense to put me on a 40 day hold to unlock, I own the phone outright. I asked was there any way to override the 40 day policy because I travel and sure enough she bypassed the policy and told me I will have to do a factory reset. I factory reset and open the unlock app and tap the permanent unlock option and boom it unlocked and the app disappeared.

Yeah it doesn't even make to put us on a 40 day hold if we own the phone
Now if we can get you guys to unlock bootloader and then try to flash the international stock rom from OnePlus and see if it "unlocks" the second simcard imei
Can't you get the token to unlock bootloader (from oneplus) after the unlock the SIM?
Mine doesn't arrive till Monday..

You can't "unlock" an IMEI it doesn't have one and the phone can't just create one

There ya go,good point. :good: (Admittedly,I didn't consider that either,THX for bringing it up).
If there is no "buried" IMEI (doubtful,at best),even if the hardware is there (less the SIM Card holder for T-Mobile models),it's not just gonna magically generate one.
Before anyone gets the idea of "putting" an existing one on there (if even possible) that discussion is off limits here @ XDA.................
I'm guessing that the special modem for TMobile variants is disabling the second SIM slot or the variant simply is different hardware then.

If u have the right tools u may be able to write an imei to the efs partition however that would be highly illegal..I don't hold out much hope that the tmo variant is dual SIM.. as OnePlus has stated that tmo specifically chose a different variant sadly..I will be happy with unlocked bl and custom roms tho after this first month..when I need dual SIM I'll just use my XS Max.

From what I saw from T-Mobile on Twitter is their backened doesn't support dual SIM phones. Not that you can use an unlocked dual SIM phone on their Network they just can't sell them directly

That sounds more like a "won't" than a can't.
TBH,I've heard that term (backend) used a few times recently & have no idea what it really means in this context, other than just what it sounds like, they won't sell it.
I bet it's just a canned response w/no real reason other than T-Mobile & the other carriers would rather sell us two single-SIM phones vs one dual-SIM phone.
I tried and they said I couldn't until the buyer remorse period is over.
Edit -
Contacted Tmo via Twitter and they did it no problems!
Apple is having a hard time getting carriers to support dual SIM capability and this will be more difficult after the merger as control of the wireless market will be further concentrated. They are easily the most influential supporters of dual SIM capabilities in the States, lets hope they maintain that support and are joined by others that could benefit from taking back some control of the wireless market because it helps check abuses by our wireless oligopoly. Folks will do what they want but I'd carefully consider buying the Tmo version if dual SIM was something I wanted. Burned myself thinking something would come that never did more than once. I do think it's a good possibility but I use dual SIM now so wasn't taking a chance.

T-Mobile DIGITS helps, but, it's not exactly the same. (Still only one SIM for data).
Otherwise, I'd stayed away. Been using Dual SIM phones more often than not over the past five years, since I left Sprint for T-Mobile (the sheer variety of BYOD/Dual SIM was the main reason, let alone better service).

Some reps will do with no problem and other Reps make it seem as if the 40 day policy is mandatory. Just gotta keep trying till you get the Rep who doesn't give a **** lol

Still sounds like they're making it out to be more expensive/labor intensive than it actually is.
If BYOD Dual-SIM phones can operate on their networks,it would stand to reason it would take little to no effort for the carriers to sell dual SIM models.
Not being disagreeable,my beef is w/the US carriers,it's nonsense.

Yes dual SIM devices work because TMobile sees it as 1 IMEI for each line. But if they sell a dual SIM phone then they have two IMEI numbers per phone in thier system. I'm guessing the iPhone works a bit different since one is virtual
