htc ONE X as my EVO predecessor ! - EVO 4G General

My my my...
How my EVO has been such a great phone! For two years now doing everything I needed it to and more! I will be replacing it with the One X, I suppose.
A little confused about the different processors present in the device though. Apparently the ATT USA version will not have the Tegra 3...? How will that compare to the Snapdragon processor?
Anyone else going from EVO to ONE X?
I hope the DEVS go that route. They will won't they since its the powerful phone of the three announced? >_>

Well the Krait processors are supposed to be faster than tegra 3 so I do not think there will be that much of a downgrade to enable lte. I am just hoping that eng s-off can happen easily on this phone.

It is frustrating when there is no community behind a device, like with the HTC Jetstream. I want to follow the Development crews. I really hate to leave Sprint. I believe in the company. AND, I have unlimited everything with them and not so with ATT. I will be losing my unlimited data ;(
Thats a big loss for someone who uses a lot of data.
arg.

The galaxy S III is still more powerful I believe...but we will see.

I have an upgrade coming up in April. I'm between getting the GNex when it hits Sprint, or waiting a bit for the One X (which I'd expect to hit Sprint sometime in June/July)

The One X is sexy, but i'm holding out to see where the Asus Padfone falls. That and i'm considering jumping from sprint in April. I can't put up with the lack of all things data anymore.

I was so tempted until I saw the front facing camera, such a HUGE dust collector and impossible to clean.

I just saw some stuff about the "one" series, ...they don't support external storage anymore. Damn! You get 25GB Dropbox storage though. Still, I prefer having a physical, removable card, for many reasons. Damn!

Technically, your Evo is the predecessor to your next phone, the One X, which is the successor to your Evo.
Ok I'll stop being a grammar Nazi now I wish HTC would embrace soft buttons and larger batteries though.

I was wanting to see who would catch that. lol took a few posts but someone mentioned it ;}

Well it looks like they are releasing several variations of the HTC ONE all with different specs and all going to different carriers.
"Today HTC is announcing the first three members of the HTC One family: the HTC One X, HTC One S and HTC One V."
This link provides a great overview of each version as well as which carrier will get which phone:

From what I understand, the One X comes with Tegra 3, but the US version of the One X is the One XL, which has a Snapdragon Krait dual-core chip. And it will come to AT&T exclusively.
The reason why the One XL will not have Tegra 3 is because the Krait has integrated LTE. It is running at 1.5 GHz, which should hold up okay. But I would have liked bragging rights.
The move away from external storage is sorta a turn-off. While 16 GB internal and 25 GB Dropbox, I would prefer to have the option of an SD card.
Camera is exciting. While it will only be 8 MP, the tech behind it is nice. Can't argue with quick and clear pictures.
The processor swap's impact is nicely laid out here. Now, if only it would allow you to get S-Off instead of Unlock...

I just read all of the different articles about the HTC Jewel, very exciting! can't wait until CTIA! hopefully they will listen to the users and have external storage or removal battery or both

Well, then stay with Sprint. I don't see the problem with this. There are going to be many types of other phones.

Yeah add me to the "Done with HTC because they're doing away with microSD support" camp. I just this week started to enjoy my EVO as an alternative media player to my IPod. Hell I just ordered a 32gb microSD last night. 2 years of 25gb Dropbox storage is useless IMO. What if i'm stuck without a data connection? HTC just took a huge step back in my mind. A little too iPhone-ish if you don't mind me saying.

FWIW, Engadget lists the HTC One X as having 32GB (26GB for the user), not 16GB. I'm sure the One XL (for AT&T) will have similar storage capacity (although, I need to find verification).

I'm excited for this to be my next phone, so I'll have to wait to see how it actually delivers once it's released.

Hopefully Sprint will get a version. I know it's gsm, but I hold out hope for a dual core snapdragon.
I still think the Galaxy phones with the HummingBird and GPU will own for quite a while. Technically your hero is dual Core already. Just one core is really tiny and slow (modem core).
By the time that comes out, something better will be on the horizon like it is right now. Phone technology is advancing fast. I'm going for the galaxy.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm 33 years old. My first computer was an Tandy 1000. My next computer was a Pentium 166. I remember when processors were coming out every month or so, edging the cap up just a little bit higher. I remember them having a starting price worth more than the car I owned at the time.
So pick a phone, buy it and be happy with it for a year. If you're always waiting for the next best thing, you'll never buy anything. If you always get pissy when you buy something and something better comes out, just stop buying.

im actually thinking about giving the evo a second chance now that 2.2. is out for it. i now have an extended battery for it too. i won't touch a samsung phone.
Why you would consider the Samsung over the evo. The battery life is not much greater on the galaxy S series. Got a few co workers with both version (vibrant, captivate). We compare and contrast every day. They are all great phones but would not swap none 4 the other. Plus the evo got that 4g along with a front facing cam only if u were thinking of the epic 4g.

I can't imagine needing a dual-core CPU phone, how much quicker than a modded N1 or Evo can you really get, not saying I wont buy one when they are out but still..
The Sprint Galaxy S has a section on XDA... I might go for that. I'm not picky about what brand name the phone is as long as I can crack smack hack and whack.
I'm 25 and my first computer was a commador 64. I didn't get another until Pentium 4 was out. That's a big jump. Yup always something a little better around the corner.
I can't wait till I can run Wine and play my game on my phone.
As far as saying you don't need faster than the evo or n1, it depends on what you are trying to run. Try putting windows 7 on that old comadore. What's the famous quote by bill gates saying computers would never need more than a few megs of ram?
And I wouldn't want to get a Samsung either but I do like the proc/gpu and physical keyboard

I'm up for upgrade in December from my Hero, but hopefully this rumored HTC "Sabor" is coming out around that time..
Supposedly it's the "Evo 2" and sounds VERY nice.
Link missing, since I can't post it... Recap below:
5. HTC SABOR- HOLY CRAP. Do you remember me talking about the HTC Scorpion, a rumored 1.5 ghz device? Well Sprint gave that one up. Sad? NOOOOO! Instead they are getting the HTC Sabor (code name ofcourse) that is a 2ghz (or possible dual core depending on who you talk to) device to compete with the 2ghz moto device coming to Verizon wireless late this year!!!! THANKYOU SPRINT?! This change was recently made as this phone will be the successor of the Evo and will hit shelves either Q4 2010 or Q1 2011. This is all dependent on the moto release date. Be looking for an over 1000 res screen (possibly that 1270 res Google is allowing), android 3.0 (gingerbread), 2 cams one being a 10 mp, 1080p recording,& kickstand =]. This device will essentially be the Evo 2, and is rumored to be the gingerbread flagship device. Naturally WiMAX is expected. More on this one hopefully coming soon.

just phone wise definitely nexus S.
however it doesnt have a sd card slot and the screen is abit smaller.
also consider the carrier and if you would prefer that over sprint.
I would wait till they announce the Nexus S on Sprint and make sure the specs are the same. I would assume they are with the exception of adding a CDMA radio with wimax.
Definitely Nexus S.

I just got mine a couple months ago and I don't real think its showing it age. I have had all the Verizon big ones like the X and the Inc and I know that they are also not the newest phones but there is always something that will be a bit better and faster. The biggest thing that I like is that Sprint is truly unlimited. Im almost up to 9 gigs with 4 days left in my cycle. I need unlimited because I had to get rid of my home internet due to lack of work in my business right now. The Nexus S is a nice phone but really..no sd card?...and I had the Fascinate with verizon and I had to depend on devs for gps fixes and usable roms but I know the S is a google phone so it shouldn't indure the lack of Samsung updates. Its all of what you like and which service does well for you in your area also.
Oh lord not another one of these threads :rolls eyes: lol
If nexus s doesn't have an sdcard slot(hopefully it does) how is it even a competitor with other smart phones out there. I'd pick my evo all day because of the huge ass screen and its an HTC. Evo 3D sounds like a winner(based on rumors).

+1 Screen and HTC
16GB of internal storage is a lot. If you need more that's fine, but 16 GB should satisfy a ton of people.
Edit: Things better on the Nexus S.
GPU: PowerVR SGX 540 can compete with the Tegra 2, EVO's Adreno 200 barely beats the original 2009 Droid's PowerVR 530.
Cameras: Samsung makes good mobile cameras, HTC includes terrible ones.
Display: SAMOLED > Lousy TFT
Internal Storage: EVO has a microSD slot but has very limited internal storage. Nexus S is capped at 16GB but has way more internal storage for Apps and 16GB is not bad at all.
NFC: I'm sure this will come in handy, will it this year? Maybe not but it's good to have one.
Gyroscope: Better gaming, especially FPS'.
Software: This is tough but you can knock a Google supported phone. Come Ice Cream time, you'll be watching Nexus S users playing with a fully working, HW accelerated OS.
It's just a really tough decision for me bc I'm thinking about getting the Nexus and giving the Evo to my girl. Don't get me wrong I love my Evo, I'm just ready for something new!

Like i said..there will always be a better phone than what you have but sometimes the network and carrier matter also..If I go 10 miles away from my house with T-Mobile I go to Edge....not on Sprint. In the end it really doesnt matter to me what people decide on..I have to use whats best for me and so does everyone else. If price matters though I'm sure you have seen if your a Bestbuy rewards zone member you can get the S for $99 on a 2 year agreement with the coupon...not a bad deal.

I read through some of the guides and its a lot of stuff that im not too sure I know how to do. It also says that you have to re do clockwork every time you want to flash a ROM...
If the Nexus S hits Sprint, you better believe I'll be selling my EVO to buy one.
1. The earlier you sell your EVO, the more you can get for it.
2. Nexus S will sell for a lot more than the EVO by the time HTC has a dual-core badboy on the market.
You see what I did there?
I'd say Evo, but that's because I've had nothing less than perfectness from my own Evo. However, the Evo 3D was announced/leaked, so I'd wait on that, because truthfully that sounds loads better than the OG Evo. But, anyways, the Nexus S is also (I'd imagine) going to be one of the phones at the top of the list for updates since, as the adds say, it is "pure Google." and they love to roll out updates, whereas the Evo is moving down the ranks with all the new phones announced at MWC and the like. Also the Evo is a beast of a phone, much larger than the Nexus S. It's really hard to define a clear cut answer, just do research and pick the phone that provides what YOU want from it.

Really? Its a Nexus phone... While I personally dont love the Samsung construction of mine, there is something to be said of Nexus.
Part of that is the hack-ability, fastboot oem unlock. Same as N1. Literally two adb commands to root a NexusS, and recovery works just fine. Although I gotta say I miss AmonRa when using my Nexus, I just cant get used to Clockwork...
Both phones rock. NS is far beyond Evo internal wise, but I like the feel and look of my Evo far more. Only knock I have against the Evo (since buying a seidio3500, and having it last 48hours+) is the QSD8650 and Adreno200. Been available since the Eee pc in 2009....Not exactly new tech, and holy poop does my NS do 3d games like a different class of phones compared to my Evo. But then I go to HDMI the ***** to the TV for some N64oid+wiimote and....o yeah...
Edit: Forgot to mention, I think I'm gonna craigslist my NS for something dual core, if that says anything.
^^^^ see that's what I don't understand is the adb commands. How do I open the command prompts?

Sooo... What's next after the Epic?

I've seen a lot of talk about new phones but is there a successor to the Samsung Epic?
I talked my wife into buying the Epic as well and we love them but we always keep our eyes on that 2 year mark (which is coming up this Summer)... wondering if we are going to stay in place with the Epics or save for something else.
We are particularly fond of the physical keyboard... don't want to jump to a phone without one.
Love reading all the great threads on here... keep up the great info.
s
The EVO 3D seems to have caught the Epic community's eye. The Epic can do nearly everything that the new EVO can, except the Evo has a better CPU (dual core), TV out (hdmi), and it's 3D option.
No top tier phones with keyboards have been announced yet by Sprint. Samsung has created the "Galaxy S II" which could be used to produce an Epic 2 but that is between Samsung & Sprint to decide.
I believe Sprint is releasing a windows phone 7 HTC device with keyboard, but I'm not interested in wp7.
How are you hitting the 2-year mark when the Epic was released last summer?

Wait...this is Samsung, God forbid they put out an up to date phone.
I know it hasn't been released yet. But I/O is here in what 4 days?
I theorize 3.1 because it will be a merge of the Tablet and Phone branches of Android, and I doubt they would down grade the version number of the tablets. so the number would have to be >=3.1
Yeah the 4.3" screen may be a problem for those looking for an Epic 2. I think it would be absolutely huge. I personally am going for a non-kb device next. After all, the KB on the epic was pretty useless with all the skipped characters which forced me to become comfortable with swype.
I'd be all over the Evo 3D if it had an amoled display. Any phone w/o amoled will need to have very strong contrast levels with very low black's otherwise it will annoy the heck out of my to pay for a phone upgrade with a lesser quality screen.
I figure I'll be on the Epic until November 2012 since they removed the 1 year upgrade from my plan. At that point I may just keep it and flash over to Boost mobile for the uber cheap monthly rates.
I bought my Epic outright... used... I jumped into Sprint service with a blackberry curve... bought an EVO and Epic cash/used... but in excellent shape.
I've got another year before I start to look, everything else will be "obsolete"

I doubt, (even if it will exist) it will become the "Atrix 2". The Atrix has been out only 7 months (maybe 6?) and it's essentially the same phone with an extra 3 megapixels :/. What would be the point of this phone as a successor?
Atrix Upgrade
The new phone with have a faster 1.2 or 1.5 ghz processor, a larger 4.3 or 4.5" screen, curved edges on the screen, and better camera, and higher video rate.
I dont think this is the time to upgrade since its been announced that quad core phones as fast as 2.5 ghz will be released by xmas. So if you do upgrade now you will be upgrading again shortly. The android market is moving very fast.
Also Gingerbread is running nicely and I am happy with my phone.
Bigger screen, faster processor are upgrades I want. But I would also like my next phone to have a FM radio receiver. The Atrix has one but it does not work. The other exotic upgrade I would like to have is a built in TV receiver. A company in S Korea released a phone with a TV receiver in it but I have not seen it yet. That would certainly be an exotic upgrade and it could be a while before one is released here in the USA.
I also look forward to Ice Cream Sandwich but wil wait for the OTA release of that which officially be in November.
Not even an upgrade to be worthy as the ATRIX successor. More pixels, higher clocked chip, most likely a larger screen....ill pass and stay with my current oc'd ATRIX

No LTE for what I'm sure will be Motorola's new "flagship" phone like the original Atrix was.... fail. After experiencing Motoblur, in all its glory, Im going Nexus route when the Prime comes out... pure Google experience appeals to me more than webtop or fingerprint scanner, neither of which I even use any more.

I don't see a 8mp camera as an upgrade. Just because its 3 more mp doesn't mean it's better picture quality, actually it's usually worse.

I shared my thoughts on the Atrix 2 here: http://briefmobile.com/motorola-atrix-2-upgraded-with-lte-photos
Why is there a 4G icon with signal blips? AT&T and Moto use the "H+" for HSPA+. Maybe this thing will have LTE after all is said and done. It is most definitely discouraging to hear "no LTE," though.
I didn't see a fingerprint sensor... so if I'm correct and there isn't one, that would mean the only upgrade is the camera. No wonder Google bought Motorola Mobility, I wouldn't want a company like that representing the Android brand :/

I doubt, (even if it will exist) it will become the "Atrix 2". The Atrix has been out only 7 months (maybe 6?) and it's essentially the same phone with an extra 3 megapixels :/. What would be the point of this phone as a successor?

If the processor specs are for real than they actually aren't close to same...
Have you guys seen what motorola does over on Verizon for its droids? DROID 1 DROID 2 and DROID 3 are all incremental updates. DROID x to DROID x2 as well. Why wouldn't Moto make a slightly different phone and call it new? Every phone manufacturer does this from Htc to Motorola to Apple.

All you have to do is look at nvidia's "Roadmap" of the tegra chips to see whats happening with them and what their plans are. Here is a link so you can see for yourselves, http://blogs.nvidia.com/2011/02/teg...-chip-worlds-first-quadcore-mobile-processor/ Anyway looking like you upgrade in 2012 than 2013 etc considering according to their roadmap they have new stuff coming every year up to 2014. Regardless though if it is a supposed "Atrix 2" seems sorta pointless considering what we can already do with a rooted unlock Atrix granted not like your layman would know any different.
Is it just me. Or is there no fingerprint reader?

Unless AT&T gets friendlier with its data limits (even soft caps) LTE doesn't excite me that much...

This is what im growing tired of, lol the atrix isnt even old, yet they are gonna release number 2 this year, lol with a slight increase in specs, ..
too many damn phones out..lol cant even keep up, unless you have deep pockets,,
I have a infuse and atrix. those will keep me busy through the new year.. hell even my old dinc still has plenty of horsepower left.. even though its migrated to my 13 yr old for games, lol
Atrix 2 probably lacks unlocked bootloader. Pass.

The Atrix was a pretty big leap in terms of mobile technology when it came out and is still extremely competitive with other Dual Core phones especially with the custom ROM's.
My thoughts should be that the Atrix 2 should be released when it makes another big jump in terms of technology, not miniscule upgrades.

Is it just me or is the supposed atrix successor...

Disappointing? Smaller battery, no fingerprint sensor and no tegra. The battery cover does look better though. I could go both ways on dedicated camera button. Everything else is kind of meh.
I voided my warranty and your mum.
Yeah not exactly much better.Give me 2 more cores and then your talking

yes, a big dissappointment. seems like a step back, not forward in every way. I thought they would do a Photon 4G equivalent with a bigger screen etc? That looks like a great device and an improvement over our atrix. Seems like the Atrix 2 is slower, smaller battery (one of the best selling points on the atrix IMHO) and doesnt make a generation jump to LTE etc.
it does ave 4.3 inch screen
Im going for a Samsung Note next.
Seems to me the business people overrule the tech/specs people.

Can we have links for the successor phone pls ?
I am inclined to believe this is Edison we are talking about, but is it officially the successor ?? Specs are not official yet.
Need to have the specs+pics for putting things in better perspective.

Hilarious stuff man
But...but....it doesn't have that horrific, baby-eating pentile screen! Surely that's worthy of an upgrade!

I know i'm disappointed. Having bought a lapdock recently..I was really hoping the next gen Atrix would really expand upon that idea with bigger and better specs..not meh.

All that will do is make your pocket warmer when you play pocket Android in the winter through heat generated with no active cooling. We don't even utilize 2 cores at the moment, so 4 cores is absolutely useless other than epeen.

You would think motorola would capitalize on webtop and create a market for "lapdocks". Their half assed "try" is pitiful. They could create a flagship phone with a higher clocked dual core and two gigs of ram. Hell, as things are, the other gig of ram could be accessible by webtop only so you double data rate and it doesnt eat battery having to power that ram and not utilizing it. Perhaps with ics and the better spec'd phones coming soon something might happen.

I second this, main reason I hated my atrix was cause of the screen, if I can get my hands on one, I would swap it out for my atrix instantly.
The Bionic had an "operational" prototype back in Feb but it just got released this month (and looking completely different with different hardware). The same could be said about this. The battery, the processor, the screen, LTE, design, etc. could all be left to change when this phone actually reaches store shelves. But to even think that Motorola goes through the trouble with testing a device that is this lackluster spec-wise, and is supposed to be a successor, leaves me to believe that their marketing structure is based off of disseminating features/hardware across as many devices as possible to maximize profit which is one of the reasons I will not be buying another Moto phone anytime soon.

I agree with everything you said, but is that any different than say HTC and all their "cookie cutter" sequel phones that they crank out with the same battery issues?
Too many upcoming phones out there, but no dominant successor right now IMO...

Did everyone forget Google bought moto?? I know it was for patenting rights, but I think they will make pure Google phones in the future now. Not all, but atleast some.
I piss excellence
I read an article about a new LG phone coming out soon that looks bad ass! Basically the same as atrix but with the new Tegra, they said 1.2 or 1.5. It also had the slide out kb and 1080P recording which is probably pretty standard with new phones now. Nvidia was also saying that we should start seeing quad core phones by end of 1Q 2012. That would be nice.
