Screw the EVO, I'll hold out for this. - Hero CDMA General

Hopefully Sprint will get a version. I know it's gsm, but I hold out hope for a dual core snapdragon.

I still think the Galaxy phones with the HummingBird and GPU will own for quite a while. Technically your hero is dual Core already. Just one core is really tiny and slow (modem core).

By the time that comes out, something better will be on the horizon like it is right now. Phone technology is advancing fast. I'm going for the galaxy.

HAHA, it would be able to demodulate the wireless signal faster, thats about it lol.
I assume it could probably be done if the kernel does anything with it...

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm 33 years old. My first computer was an Tandy 1000. My next computer was a Pentium 166. I remember when processors were coming out every month or so, edging the cap up just a little bit higher. I remember them having a starting price worth more than the car I owned at the time.
So pick a phone, buy it and be happy with it for a year. If you're always waiting for the next best thing, you'll never buy anything. If you always get pissy when you buy something and something better comes out, just stop buying.

I'm probably going to hold out and wait for the HTC OMGWTFBBQ.

im actually thinking about giving the evo a second chance now that 2.2. is out for it. i now have an extended battery for it too. i won't touch a samsung phone.

Why you would consider the Samsung over the evo. The battery life is not much greater on the galaxy S series. Got a few co workers with both version (vibrant, captivate). We compare and contrast every day. They are all great phones but would not swap none 4 the other. Plus the evo got that 4g along with a front facing cam only if u were thinking of the epic 4g.

I can't imagine needing a dual-core CPU phone, how much quicker than a modded N1 or Evo can you really get, not saying I wont buy one when they are out but still..

The Sprint Galaxy S has a section on XDA... I might go for that. I'm not picky about what brand name the phone is as long as I can crack smack hack and whack.

I'm 25 and my first computer was a commador 64. I didn't get another until Pentium 4 was out. That's a big jump. Yup always something a little better around the corner.
I can't wait till I can run Wine and play my game on my phone.
As far as saying you don't need faster than the evo or n1, it depends on what you are trying to run. Try putting windows 7 on that old comadore. What's the famous quote by bill gates saying computers would never need more than a few megs of ram?
And I wouldn't want to get a Samsung either but I do like the proc/gpu and physical keyboard

I'm up for upgrade in December from my Hero, but hopefully this rumored HTC "Sabor" is coming out around that time..
Supposedly it's the "Evo 2" and sounds VERY nice.
Link missing, since I can't post it... Recap below:
5. HTC SABOR- HOLY CRAP. Do you remember me talking about the HTC Scorpion, a rumored 1.5 ghz device? Well Sprint gave that one up. Sad? NOOOOO! Instead they are getting the HTC Sabor (code name ofcourse) that is a 2ghz (or possible dual core depending on who you talk to) device to compete with the 2ghz moto device coming to Verizon wireless late this year!!!! THANKYOU SPRINT?! This change was recently made as this phone will be the successor of the Evo and will hit shelves either Q4 2010 or Q1 2011. This is all dependent on the moto release date. Be looking for an over 1000 res screen (possibly that 1270 res Google is allowing), android 3.0 (gingerbread), 2 cams one being a 10 mp, 1080p recording,& kickstand =]. This device will essentially be the Evo 2, and is rumored to be the gingerbread flagship device. Naturally WiMAX is expected. More on this one hopefully coming soon.

what will be your next upgrade?

been talking to alot of people and i get mixed responses. some like that **** faced windows phone 7 that i think was drawn up by a 2nd grader.
some want to wait for the next gen palm pre, which i may look into as well depending on specs.
epic or evo... these two are on the top of my list!
or wait and see what other droid phones sprint comes out with by 2011. aka hero2 or desire.
so anyways what do you think might be your next move from the hero?
I don't want an Evo..too damn big..and I don't want another clunky phone with a physical keyboard after getting used to my touch keyboard on my hero, coming from 5 TP2's....So..I guess a Desire would be nice if Sprint ever gets it,or a Hero 2 if that ever comes out..A little bit bigger screen would be nice with HD capabilities along with a 2g processor and 1g of memory

Check these out this is why I held off on the the EVO or the other phones from this years second quarter. I cant wait for this.... as for the power think of the dual/quad core laptops and netbooks they have, they have power on demand and then the processor scale the freq back when not in use.

Once you go to a larger screen, you will need more horse power under the hood.I have a co-worker who has to have the absolute latest thing out when it comes to cell phones..The guy has about 10 of them and a couple on different carriers..He has a Evo..and is getting a Epick as soon as he can..that's just hoiw he is..but he thinks my rooted Hero is da ****s and is ever bit as fast as his Evo the way it is stock. We will probably see something at ctia, so it can look like the big draw of the show.
Probably won't be an Evo 2... but rather some other crappy name HTC puts on its phone. I wish they named their phones better. It would be better for them in a marketing point of view, cause all of their phones just seem so random (they create the pool of Android phones with random names and bad GPUs, lol).
Anyway, I love my Evo, just wish it was better in some areas (screen, camera, GPU)... and that's all I'm looking for in an upgrade.
CTIA is usually where Sprint shines.

If anyone read any of the stats on the evo shift, they would clearly see it's better in every aspect (as long as you dont mind no Front facing cam, and 5mb rear cam). The 800mhz is wayyyyyyyy better than the 1ghz the evo has, has more updated software all the way around. So they made the screen smaller probably to accomodate for the added thickness of having a physical keyboard. You guys need to realize it's not all about the specs all the time.. HTC knew exactly what they were doing when they put out that phone.
There wont be a evo 2....there is supposed to be the htc sabor coming out that is going to be the upgrade of the evo....google it
^As far as I know the HTC Sabor isn't real. At least no one has said anything substantial about it, and certainly nothing has been confirmed (unless you read Ozcarguide........)
Anyway I'm expecting to hear something at ctia. Not expecting an "Evo 2" per se, but at least a top-notch smartphone for sprint to lead with in 2011

No, it still is.
Keep in mind we're talking about Sprint specifically and not all carriers.
The iPhone rumors are just that.
And yes, it's just logic that [due to no CDMA exclusivity] the iPhone will come to Sprint at some point [and all carriers]
But the fact is that Sprint is going to have the next generation of phones come out in summer.
They always do.
It's more important now..more than ever before.
And it would just be the silliest...most retarded business decision in the history of business decisions to NOT follow up the highest selling phone in carrier history with a phone that is updated.
Maybe it won't be HTC, but you bet it will be dual-core and the same basic size etc of the Evo.

No, the Evo shift is actually slightly better than the Epic.
Although you're correct that the Evo Shift much improved over the Evo.
The Evo Shift IS better than the Evo, spec wise.
It has the updated core [top of the line til the tegra 2 series at CES]
It has a GPU 4x more powerful than the Evo's.
The core in the Evo Shift is 45 nm as opposed to 65nm [thus much better battery life with more power]
And, as I have said in the past, clock speed is irrelevant.
...much like the Pentium 4 3.06 ghz core is NOT faster than the i7 core that run at 2.53 GHz....

Their updates generally come in the Summer... [Pre June 09, Evo June 10 etc]
This is "delayed" versus say Verizon who gets them shortly after CES.

[Q] Best Android phone for Sprint?

I'm going to be changing providers soon to Sprint. I've been on T-Mobile for the longest time. Had a Nexus One but sold it due to financial woes.
Anyhoo... I'm looking at the Samsung Epic 4G and it seems to be the nicest phone I've seen yet on Sprint. I don't like the EVO, at all, and the EVO with a keyboard is too small for me.
Thoughts on Samsung? Thoughts on this phone overall? I have played with them a bit (a couple of co-workers have them) and, though I'm disappointed that they don't have the 2.2 Update yet... I'll live. I haven't had a smart phone at all for several months now.
I'll be getting it at the end of next week, if the Epic is what I decide on.
If you want a high end one, and you don't want the evo, get the epic. Otherwise, for sprint ID android, get the Optimus S.
Sent from The Chaotic Void.
Well, I have both the Evo and Epic, but I would sell my Evo before I sold my Epic. Just because when the source code drops for the Epic, CM6 +CM7 + overclocked- undervolted kernels etc... will make this phone shine like it should have been 5 months ago.

I see no difference. All manufacturers do it. Sounds like a double standard. No device has 2.3. I can name a few devices that have 2.1 or lower with a promise to update, and they all are coming out with newer devices.

The difference is that when this phone launched it was launched under the guise that it would receive Froyo in a timely manner. Now 5 months later they haven't updated it yet. The more phones they release, the less incentive they have to update older devices. They gain nothing financially from updating devices to newer versions of Android. A small percentage of people, at most in the high single digits, actually care/know what version of Android the phone is running. Even if they wrote off this group of people and these people never bought Samsung again, they gain business by constantly introducing new shiny phones for the remaining 90+% to buy.
That is why I am concerned with them releasing new awesome phones while ours remain on Android 2.1.
Regardless how long they took they still kept their end of the bargain. Look st the mytouch slide. They are speculating someone after march for their 2.2 upgrade. So HTC should get the same flack. Yet I don't see it. Motorola did the same thing with the droid X. they brought out 2 devices with 2.2 while droid X users waited. See what I am talking about? People tend to promote another manufacturer without actually looking at times. They all do the same thing and sometimes it falls under the radar.
The best android phone for sprint is not the one I have (epic), but the one that has the best specs today. Don't believe anything sprint says about future software updates unless they put in writing with a specific release date. Sprint are the biggest gd liars when it comes to selling phones.

The epic is a much better phone but as you can tell with all the froyo post samsung and sprint cant seem to provide us with an actual update. That had never been a problem with any htc I have ever owned.
that's the only reason I say evo.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
If you can live without an official Froyo for an indeterminate period of time, or are willing to try custom ROMs, then go for it. The Epic is a great piece of hardware, I really like mine. Then again, there'll be some new hardware coming to Sprint in the near future I'm sure.. might be better to wait another month or two if you can stand it.
updates are nice...but if Google is really trying to push this gaming stuff, then thats when the Evo gets killed. They added a lot of things in Gingerbread for gaming but none of that is going to help the Evo out. The Evo with Gingerbread still can't play Dungeon Defenders while the Epic on 2.1 can...so really, Gingerbread is just an update that gives the Evo the Epic experience (because Gingerbread really does feel like 2.2.1 on the Epic).
And there are so many other things wrong with the Evo as well....main thing is 4G and battery life. The Evo doesnt even report the right battery percentages. You can be on 100% then go into recovery, come out of recovery and be at 96%...go back into recovery and come out of it and be at 98% -.-. The battery is also a slippery slope. Once the phone heats up, there's absolutely no way of cooling it down unless you stop EVERYTHING you're doing. And everything heats it up, and it only takes 20 mins of usage to go from 80 to +95 degrees. They do have the dev community and kernels, but the kernels only help with the sleeping (barely). They dont really help with actual usage because of the slippery slope.
Also the Epic is a true 4G phone. It treats 4G more like 3G than WiFi. With the Evo, once you connect to 4G, it runs nonstop, which is why people thought 4G was a guzzler and thats why I was afraid to use it on my Epic. but the Epic actually times it out when not in use and starts it back up once in use, saves a ton of battery.
So Hardware: Epic wins
Software: Evo wins
Overall: Epic
Now the Evo wins software because of the updates and dev community, but let me put it like this....I had the Evo since August and since August Ive tried literally all roms and kernels...damn near every different combination...I followed every tip provided that promised better performance and battery life...and at the end of the day my phone was basically the same as it was out of the box. I was happy because I've never seen any better and thought that the Evo was the best out there. After one day of using the Epic, I can't go back. I just flashed DK28 and that experience alone is way better than anything the Evo has had to offer. Performance = top notch. Battery life = top notch. Its just perfect. This phone is simply perfect and I honestly don't think that HTC should be allowed to make anymore Android phones.

making me mad

before my top device comes out, better ones are coming out or at least rumored too...i understand technology but this is too fast for me, jeez at least let me buy one first before coming out with the next better thing...

Im not sure what's worse, pantech or kyocera. I think pantech phones would be alright if the UI was better.
Faster doesn't always = better.
Pantech & TFT kinda detracted from the wow factor too.
I oddly like the name "Vega Racer". Why? I'm scared to ask myself.
they look like crappy iphones...IMO..
You need to stop looking at it that way and be happy by how fast the market is going. Would you prefer it if we're still sitting on 500MHz processors like in 2009?
No no not at all, I hear your side too, it just that I would like to get my Evo 3d befirevits outdated by q better processor

The evo 3d uses the same chipset.
I said this a couple of weeks ago. By the time the 3D comes out there will be 3 or 4 more phones with better specs set to drop a couple weeks/months later. Look at the Samsung phone that just leaked on Tmobile.. the Hercules.

The cpu inside the Hercules is the same family as the dual core Snapdragon found in the Evo 3d.
It's not just hardware you have to look at, it's also software. I'm not a huge fan of Sense, but Sense is pretty smooth.

Your point was by the time the 3d is out, there will be faster devices out. You then referenced the Hercules, which will most likely have near same performance of the 3d, but probably borked support from Samsung.
Interesting...but pantech? No thanks.
This epic reply brought to you by none other than my roxx'd out Evo.
Correct me if I'm wrong, might be same family but isn't the 3d at 1.2 dual core?
And I totally get your point, I feel outdated just three months later. Same reason I'm holding off on a tablet...ipad is a perfect example, couple months after spending 600 or so my friend feels like an idiot just a few months later he's considering another 600 just cuz of the stupid camera...

Get over it. Buy a phone you like, enjoy it, and get past the need for having the latest and greatest. Phone envy is a *****. Either that, or man up every 6 months and fork out the dough for the newest on the market. Technology will always be 2 steps ahead of you, that's just the way it is.

Truth.
Not sure this is exactly a new thing, across the board as a whole. Always something better around the corner. And what's there to be bothered about something being better than something you don't even own yet ... ? Whether or not it is 'entirely' better or 'marginally' better.
And talk about not wanting to buy a Samsung device ... but a Pantech?

Yup the evo 3d is undervolted to 1.2 ghz for minimum battery drain but will be overclocked soon enough, just look at the g2 overclock threads to see the potential qualcomm chips have.
After a year with my evo, I believe I can easily wait until next year to upgrade since every phone coming out has specs bumps and nothing else . Just because a better spec laptop comes out doesn't mean to run out and get it.
It will be hard but I'm sure ill hold off on the evo 3d and get the next gen evo next july.
What's the point of this thread? The EVO3D has a better screen, higher resolution, and although the clock speed is 1.2 gigahertz, it will easily be able to overclock significantly higher.
The G2, as someone else mentioned, has been overclocked up to 2 gigahertz. A G2, which has an older chipset and has a stock speed of merely 800 MHz.

Upgrade to Evo 3D or Wait?

Should i upgrade to evo 3d or wait tll 2012 for something better.
Ok so my upgrade isnt availible until 2012, but i was thinking about getting the evo 3d, but then again, next year theres probably gonna be a device with tegra 3 quad core, qhd,1gb ram,4.5" screen, sense 3.5. so im stuck between evo 3d or evo 4(or some other name).
There will always be a new device. After tegra 3 it will be something else. I am waiting on my upgrade for a little bit.

It's really a question only you can answer. If the Evo 3D represents enough of an upgrade to you to warrant paying full price, and if you have the means to do so, you should do it. If not, you shouldn't.
Since we haven't seen the Evo 3D yet and don't yet know just how much better it really is than what we have, that makes the question premature as well. My hunch is it will be quite significantly better. I could certainly see myself choosing to pay full price to get either the Evo 3D or another dual core phone this year, but I'll want to see the reviews, see them firsthand, etc. But like I said, that's my feeling. Only you can answer what you should do.
I can totally see upgrading to the 3rd evo Nothing wrong with this phone but I would like a little less lay for when I play on it.

thank you, i think ill stick with my evo for awhile. Ill wait to see what 2012 brings me.
Id go for it, but its all riding on the bootloader right now.
Just wait it out for the bootloader. Plus at the rate of tech these days, 2012 we'll have the Evo 4D with 6G Wimax lol

I want to upgrade to the Evo 3d, but probably won't have the money so ill probably wait for the next big phone when my upgrade comes.
I would wait. Nvidia is showcasing the tegra quad core and is supposed to have devices launching with it either near end of this year or beginning of next. So yeah i would wait cuz i believe after quad core comes out for phones hardware advances will stall or plateau. Then it will be all about the software and not what phone has what hardware
Edit: just looked at the initial benchmarks and the tegra quad core blows away the competition easily and even some LAPTOPS. Its not even final and still being worked on this is gonna be a beast
No point in waiting unless it takes until the end of summer to see the 3D.
New technology always comes out.
If you're gonna wait on that merit you might as well never buy.
You can always sell the damned thing if you find something else you want.

Haven't you seen the Best Buy buy back commercial, "I just bought this one".
Keep waiting and you'll keep waiting.
Swyped from my HTC Supersonic: EVO 4G
Ill definitely be skipping this round, as of right now I have no real need for 3D seeing as I dont even have a 3D tv to output content too. Also with the Kal-El processor chip set to launch q4 there really wont be a long wait till you find it packed in the next round of phones.
I pre-ordered the 3D, I can honestly care less about the 3D portion as I'll never enable it. Being able to upgrade less than a year after I signed my contract is why I will go ahead and upgrade to the 3D.
Getting bored with the EVO 4G right now, always wanting something new, so the 3D will hold me over until their next good phone comes out and I'll upgrade again.
If waiting for an upgrade is an issue I suggest reading the 1st post of this thread. It has worked for a ton of people including me.
Was going to upgrade until I heard about the nexus 3

Yea it is speculation. But enough to keep me from the evo3d. Of course I am a aosp fan but the nexus s I think is not up to par with the evo 4g. I like the no buttons part of the nexus 3
