Backtrack 5 Running on a Kindle Fire - Kindle Fire General

Hey guys just wanted to show you a new build im working on. Its basically a full touch version of bt5. I want to give credit to zacthespack for actually coming up with the ubuntu/BT5 install method.
What sets my build apart is the fact that It is full touch control. No dragging a mouse or anything like that. The only setback currently is the lack of bluetooth to connect a keyboard.
This isnt really a release or anything just wanted to tell everyone what I am working on. If anyone wants to help, feel free to pm me

Any links? Or do we still have to wait?

Get reaver running with BT5 and crack WPS with it and it will be useful

No links or anything yet. The .img file is publicly released and you can find it on google.
The crappy part is that there isn't an external keyboard for the kindle yet :/ One I can A) figure out how to do it if I can find a pinout guide for the Kindle Fire's serial port, or B) Amazon comes out with one, I think the possibilities are endless with this device. Much easier to carry around then my laptop at work. I do pentesting on the side and I think tablets are the future of info sec professionals.
The what I really want to get working is the full touch interface. I have it at 50% right now. I am thinking that there is a problem with detecting multiple gestures in bt5 itself. I am not sure yet haha.
So if anyone would like a fiddle with the source and come up with some ideas please let me know

How's this going? I'm hoping somebody will be able to enable usb host mode on the KF, I am 99% sure bluetooth is not supported by the WL1270B. Speaking of the which, have you gotten it into monitor mode? Injection would require a patch too I'm sure.

I just read through the ubuntu install guide thread, this method involves vnc'ing into a chrooted .img so to answer my own question, none of the wireless penetration utils are going to work.

VNC and chrooting can still allow for wireless stuff to work, as we have access to the native device's from chroot also.
the only hurdle comes in the form of device drivers for wifi not supporting packet capture and monitor mode.
@nickmc01, once i get my KF i cna also lend you a helping hand.
in the mean time you can discuss about the issues you are facing and i may be able to help you on that.
BTW are you playing with variations in VNC client configurations to get touch screen or you are also looking at customizing the window managers to more touch friendly once like unity or kde netbook etc.
Note : I am waiting to get my kindle fire delivered (might be with me by month end)

Bump
Did anyone succeeded in installing BT5 on KF ?

did this ever happen???

It wouldn't work. Yes, you could boot into Backtrack5 but the kindle fire's WiFi module does not support the modes needed to run Backtrack5. Only one windows phone actually has the proper hard wars to make any effective use of the program.

no root for 3.2,no ad hoc for 3.2...

i am using android 3.2 now,but the root software for 3.1 is no useful for 3.2.
i like to use a lap-top to share internet by ad-hoc function ,but if the system is not root the ad-hoc will not be added ,right?
Life sux without root! But the devs here are cleaver im sure they will find a solution pronto!
In the mean time you can look for software that turns your laptop into a AP. Like this one:
http://www.connectify.me/
I haven't tried it but from the description it looks promising (and it's free... well the basic version at least). One thing though - it's for win7 but I'm sure you can find something similar for your OS (whatever it is).

It's not about the sharing of the internet connection but the way the iconia connects to your laptop. Simply put in the wifi standard there are two modes - infrastructure and ad-hoc. In the first all clients connect to the AP and transmit data to it only. The other uses direct links between the clients that need to transmit data between them. In the current scenario they look the same (data is transmitted between the iconia and the laptop) but unfortunately iconia can't connect to ad-hoc networks without modification that requires root (which we don't have) and when you create a wlan in windows it's ad-hoc.
I honestly did not know about the downloading of the software - just googled "windows access point software" and came to an article about this one. EDIT: I've just followed the download link and it starts downloading the installer. Not that much of a surprise when you click something called "download". I prefer to get the job done rather than answering to "are you sure you want to download the file?", "are you absolutely positive to that?", "you don't seem too exited about it, maybe you should download it tomorrow?", "do you know what you are doing?", "does your wife know that you want to download it?", "in the current political situation, do you think that it is wise to download this file?" and so on...

Maybe the A100 3.2 root technique works?
Connectify is stable and works by turning your laptop into an actual WAP...
I have been using it for over a year at many hotels that charge for one WIFI and then the laptop puts it back out as its own separate WIFI to all of my other devices... (an HP iPAQ, an iPOD Touch 3, another laptop, the Acer A500 and the Dell Streak 7)
I even used it as a stand alone Hot Spot to do a survey for a major company warehouse situation...
And now they have a version for XP and Vista (I have not tried these yet)
Ted...
Im attempting the A100 Technique right now (as soon as I get JDK / ANDROID SDK) installed. I will update this thread to say if it worked. I thought I read somewhere it didn't but I'm bored. LOL

IIRC we have a newer bootloader in our version of 3.2 than the A100 has. SPCIIW!
Yeah that was a waste of time there's even a reply in the a100 forum saying their ADB root technique doesn't work. I can't chmod the su file to make it executable or even dump in the /system/xbin folder. Was good practice though, hadn't really used adb before. Really pisses me off that Acer did this. It would be like Microsoft not letting you be an admin to your own windows installation. I'm sure the very capable devs out there will crack it (hopefully) lol.

[Q] usb host mode with iconia a500 and android 3.2: no devices

(this is a sw development question but I'm a noob and not allowed to post in the development forum)
I'm trying to communicate with a usb device, using an acer iconia a500 upgraded to android 3.2 (kernel 2.6.36.3+, not rooted, I just used the regular update feature). In a nutshell, what happens is that after I get the UsbManager, getDeviceList returns an empty map. The same happens with the adbtest sample from google:
mManager = (UsbManager)getSystemService(Context.USB_SERVICE);
// check for existing devices
for (UsbDevice device : mManager.getDeviceList().values()) {
// I get nothing here, the values() list is empty
I've tried several devices (various usb solid state disks, an hard drive, a mouse, a garmin watch, etc). nothing. Some devices (disks, mouse) are indeed recognized by the OS (they work: I see the filesystem, the mouse works fine, etc), but they don't get reflected at the API level.
Googling around, some people say that mouse and keyboard don't get enumerated but disks do, but they're using 3.1 while I'm using 3.2. I don't get the disk either, or anything else I've plugged in.
The code above should enumerate all devices. Anyway, I also tried the intent + xml file approach as documented in the google samples. Still nothing.
The manifest seems ok, and as I said, the adbtest sample straight from the sdk shows the same problem.
Given the paucity of the API, I don't really know what to try next. Has anybody succesfully used host mode on an iconia a500 with android 3.2? I mean "used" at the API level. As I said, "standard" devices gets recognized at the OS level and works, but aren't visible through the API.
In the end I need to communicate with a non-standard device in host mode, so I really need to get it through the API. Also, my (potential) users are just regular users, they won't root their device, install custom roms, etc. I need to make it working with a "standard" 3.1 / 3.2 tablet. I got the iconia after reading it works in host mode, but can't make it work :-(
The only thing that comes to mind is that you missed declaring that you would use usb features in the manifest. Happens to me all the time when using internet in my apps . Check this (you probably already have): http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/usb/host.html#usage

Unfortunately no, that's not the case (I triple-checked). I thought I may have made some mistake in the manifest etc, so as I said I've also tried the adbtest sample from google - same problem.
I've also found a free app in the marketplace ("usb device info") which is supposed to show connected devices - I get no devices. I see you have an A500, which android version are you running?

It shouldn't have anything to do with root since the app hasn't requested root access. I have the exact same kernel version. The fact that the disks connect to your tab and you can see the file system, but not the devices themselves is really weird...

Maybe if someone with stock unrooted 3.2 has the same problem, it would make sense for you to root and flash the near-stock prerooted ROM... or you may always try factory resetting your tablet if you don't have anything essential on it. Also you may try with a usb memory stick just to eliminate the possibility of the port not supplying the needed amperage to power the hdds (though you shouldn't see them in the file explorer if that was the case...)
Sent from my A500 using XDA Premium App
I did try the memory stick - just like the HD and mouse, it is recognized by the OS, I can use the file system, yet get no devices from the API.
Unless someone else comes up with a good idea, I'll go with the factory reset. Unfortunately, rooting is not really an option, I need to develop something that works for the average guy...
Thanks a bunch!

[Q] VMware View

hey guys i am an absolute noob at all this stuff, but im a uni student with an a500. It really annoys me that each note taking app just lacks in different ways, but none of them are capable for solid note taking for lectures. Im looking for 'MS word' which for obvious reasons will not pop up on android anytime soon, so i was wondering if i could somehow get windows running on the iconia tab. Im not asking for a dual boot or anything, just like a virtual machine or something, but again, i don't want something like splashtop remoted desktop client or anything, because then i might aswell just use my computer. My tablet is on 3.2.1, so if i have to root it, please tell me that aswell. I downloaded VMware view from the market, but have NO idea whatsoever how to get things running. Please tell me if it is another desktop streamer, because thats not what i wanted at all. If it isnt, then could someone please tell me how to use it?
thankyou
check out splash top in the market. It's cheaper on Amazon app store. You can remote connect to windows even over the internet. If you have wifi at school. Fast enough to stream and play computer games on the tablet.

Wow, you didn't read his post at all, did you? He clearly said NO splashtop or such.
As for the OP: no, you cannot run Windows on A500 in any meaningful way. Emulating a complete different architechture would simply bring the tablet down to a crawl. Vmware view afaikis for use with vmware server, btw.
This isn't really an answer to your specific question, but have you tried Freenote from the market? It works pretty well for me, and allows for both typing and freehand writing with a stylus. A bit cumbersome until you get used to it, but after messing with it for a bit, I manage a pretty damn fast freehand writing speed with it.
As far as Windows goes, its like WereCatf said...not a thing available that would do what you want. At least not that I can find.
You can't run windows, but you could use supernote, that's what I use.
It's laying around this forum, just do a search.

You're wholly welcome.
VMWare View is not what you are looking for.
View is merely a client to connect and deliver virtual machines from a pre-existing VMWare ESX / vSphere / vCenter setup... which is thousands of dollars in infrastructure and licensing.
The 'next best thing' so to speak would be to run Linux (debian) in a chroot (which is basically a very crude form of virtualization, requiring the two OSes to be similar enough to run on the same kernel)... To run Windoze on a simulated x86 CPU, qemu should work but it'll probably be way too slow (it's slow enough running Android ARM on my 2x2.2GHz machine with hardware virtualization support -- which Tegra doesn't have).
EDIT: The best way to get Linux chroot is to use Linux Installer from the market. Many tutorials on the web tell don't tell you about that, unfortunately.
getting an emulator onto the tablet would waste battery life like crazy.. i see no benefit to running virtualized desktop from the tablet for note taking purposes.
what about just an MS office-like app... OfficeSuite Pro does the job for me with note taking...
it syncs up with google docs / box / and dropbox accounts. paired with my bluetooth keyboard and usb mouse i never have issues taking notes.
First as has already been pointed out emulating windows in order to just take notes is rather stoopid. There are many apps that will let you make and edit word documents quite well. Secondly if you want to do windows things on your tablet, dolphin (or other remote desktop) is the way to go. Hell vmware view is a remote desktop where you are only using a portion of the server. With fast wifi Dolphin is really really nice.

Native ubuntu/chroot jail free? no vnc

Hello All,
Another ubuntu project here..
its a chroot jail free looped native framebuffered something?
one folder on sdcard called linux /sdcard/linux with the .img
your mount point..i use /data/local/mnt/linux
the scripts i use /data/local/mnt
simple you will need to edit the scripts if u edit ur paths..
ill share my stuffs if theres any interest in this.
dunno if this has been done on sgs2 using just scripts but yh
ive managed to get ubuntu13.04 running with full multitouch support using mtrack i use lxde/2d-unity
this approach uses android framebuffer instead of using a vncserver.
Concept/Goal: use android hardware to run linux without vnc and full hardware support...its christmas soon!
so we go a safe way and mount a img file and loop and chroot and mount necessary android stuff i.e /dev /proc /tmp-to help speed up system! and mount all sdcards.
then we kill android-the-framebuffer-hog
and start our xsession,
anyone interested in helping me?
i have the scripts and image, just need more nuerons!
to do is (alot)
Working:
Framebuffer >> full gamma and .mhz settings safe
Wifi
Bluetooth
Reboot to andoid and umount rootfs on log out
Mouse
Multitouch tap is click, double tap is ?grab window to move it, two fingers for right click, three to scroll
Screenshots
Charging
Sdcard
MicroSd
Keyboard >> virtual
Theres alot but its hard to summerise lol
Not Working (WIP)
get sound working completely (evrythings working except last output part) alsamixer, pulseaudio all work..just the last bit..so no sound.
figure out why system_bus_socket connection refused?
why dbus isnt being used but starting ok?
Landscape mode mouse axis. (i can rotate the display but the mouse axis are wrong.. up=right down=left) (portrait is fine)
camara
gpio-keys (hardware buttons)
calls
text messaging.
OTG USB (i made one so im assuming its that that doesnt work simply tweak to the xorg.conf to swap from touch to mouse..)
DRI & DRI2
GL_OES_EGL_image for 3d
have to use a virtual keyboard until running android apps in linux is figured out--ahem (i use matchbox-keyboard)
logon screen works but the keyboard is a issue. (virtual keyboard only starts once logged in. so no logon yet just auto logon)
you can still use ssh and vncserver if you wanted to..
any interest ill share my scripts...
as i said im not the only person to chroot imgs, but i havent seen a thread on getting it running natively on sgs2 without uboot or repartioning anything.
unless u completely recompile the linux os whilst inside of it, i.e adding vmlinux.img should be safe enough. works for me
anyway been a busy with this and im not a pro developer just a seasoned addict, thus the call for arms!
peace!
some screenshots
and you expect me to share my work when none of you have any input..phhhhhaaa

Interesting.
May I ask what are you using for? I mean, which killer app in Ubuntu you can't replace with an Android one?
Moreover, I have noticed an X server on the Play Store (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=au.com.darkside.XServer)
Using it, instead of killing Android, may allow some more integration with the Android environment (e.g. you could still receive calls while using your ubuntu stuff).
Another improvement would be to use multiple consoles (you know, Ctrl-Alt-Fx stuff) to have both environments running

i mean to free up surfaceflinger and the framebuffer and send android into a slumber?so we can use it for our xsession. not KILL PERMANETLY
its like a chroot jail free no vnc something??
using vnc will allow u to still have android on in the background for calls and what not but thats chrooting a image to a mount point and running a app. awsome but i got bored with that..much perfere native input.
Search for linuxonandroid by zachthespack hes been dealing with chrooting linux for a long time and has a good application and a healthy stock of img files for you to use, plus a good how to. http://www.linuxonandroid.org Download from play store.. search 4 linuxonandroid
...thats not a bad idea zavorrax about the X11 app..
although running a third party app to use the framebuffer seems pointless when u can use the devices one!
wouldnt u rather have a true linux os in your pocket rather then a clever spin off of it, dont get me wrong i love android and its easy moddding.. linux is far better though.. this project im doing is after all, on a android device.
android root is always 0 ... root = / .... android apps are the users...if that makes sense?
linux uses users who log in..so root still has the initial setup of the os incase a user messes up, root can reset it with relative ease.
so in order to use linux for a vnc free linux, (root is in my opinion just like a programme.) needs to also be 0
thus, night night android..
its hard to explain, its linux and android?
basically the only way i can explain this is its the same as a chroot of a distro BUT instead of using vnc/X11 apks as the only way of having a GUI, we can optionally use the android framebuffer..fb0...
this thread wasnt ment to be a how-to just to see if theres any intrerest out here.
ill make a proper how to with all the basics needed.
as i said theres alot of these projects across the android platform, people trying too turn android back to linux/running linux.
u can pretty much use any img used for vnc or create your own for this.
theres a lot ubuntu/arch/debian/kali/backtrack..etc..etc
i initially add a file to my new img and apt-get a few things, run a few commands to change the img for my device then only need to execute my script,on the fly, hello linux desktop why not!
theres alot of debugging thats why im seeing if anyone is interested in this and would like to help/participate
i initially started using vnc years ago but got fed up with having to run a handful of scripts in this app and then find and add my ports and set passwords in another app, all using important cpu and power, so i thought why not make it all into one easy script.sh.......can of worms...
fruition was glimpsed so i continued.
just use it bcos i can
oh yeah and i say kill/sleep android, its all there..just not emulated/running a instance..sort of packed away in a box.(sleeping lol)
until i/someone can debug compatability for things like phone or proximity sensor then inside the linux GUI theres no support because it hasnt been setup/coded
thanks.

Remote management?

I have a Fire HD8 (7th gen) that I have added Google Play store & launcher hijack thanks to this site.
Has anyone been successful finding remote control/management software to control these fire tablets from a Windows (or Linux) system?
If this can be done, I would buy a second one as a gift for an elderly relative who would not be able to set it up by herself.
In the past, I have used Teamviewer for computer to computer management, but the version I tried on my tablet appears not to allow control of the tablet, only the other way around.
A trial version of join.me allows viewing of the screen, but not take control.
I'd appreciate pointers of any other solutions I may not be aware of.
Found this thread searching for a solution to same. This is not much help, but just confirming a similar experience. I installed TeamViewer Host on my new Fire HD 10 and it supports file transfer and screen sharing only. You can move a blue pointer around on the screen remotely (for example to point at things to help the person with the tablet), but you cannot actually click on things or take over and control the tablet remotely. I have not tried join.me but sounds like it has the same limitation. My HD 10 also has Google Play store, but no launcher hijack, and no root.
Incidentally, my rooted & ROMed Fire 7 does support full TeamViewer Host functionality with remote control.

That's a bit odd actually. I would've expected the Fire 7 NOT to have the memory to support it. Team Viewer is great if you get it all working, which can be very complicated. At least I know I'm not the only one who had trouble in my HD 8. And I never seen this thread.
