It would be nice if someone who knows his stuff would explain what
this would mean for the 7.7 devs and upcoming community.
Is this release of source in any way much different, or even a first
Have similar things happened for other phones like the NOTE or SG2 ?

If you follow those links it takes you to Samsung Open Source portal.. I believe your answer would be answered there..

I did, but I don't know my stuff.
So I was hoping someone could tell if this is special with regards to previous phones/releases, and if so, what would the immediate benefits be for the devs/community.

I guess the fact that they have kernel source to reverse engineer to a degree.. and tips are good when trying to reverse engineer it and then rebuild with different sources..

too bad, but honeycomb should not be much difference with ICS, right?

Cell Phones: Will my Samsung device receive an update to Android 4.0 ICS?

Verizon:

Galaxy Tab 7.7 (SCH-i815)
Seems 7.7 will have ICS update soon.
but when will its source release?

Unfortunately this applies to the Verizon cdma version

wait, these are honeycomb or ics source code? really hoped it ics so the cm9 development can gain momentum.

Are we likely to see peoper CM9? This tab would be AWESOME with pure stock.

The link up above you is just a post from Sammy saying that the Verizon and others are getting ICS. The source code posted so far is only for HC.

Would I be correct to say that HC source has been released?
Not sure what has changed but my google alert picked up a change in the source repository.

Samsung source code for galaxy S phones gingerbread released today

I hope this is a release that is worthy of development for the Fascinate I look forward to see whats next. Our devs so incredible work and i hope this will help them with future development.

This really doesn't mean much of anything, just like the Froyo version didn't really help us. If Samsung's code wasn't horrible, then yeah. But it is.
(apparently even Samsung's Froyo source for our phone didn't particularly help with AOSP/CM/MIUI porting efforts... yes, Samsung's developers are that bad)

It didn't help because Samsung isn't required to release the source for the parts that are causing the biggest issues. They released what they had to based on the licensing, but that didn't include any of their proprietary code, which is where the problems lie.

Custom roms?? :(

Why don´t we have custom roms yet??
Wasn´t the source code dropped already??
When was the source dropped?

What's the time frame they have to release the HC Source Code? Don't they HAVE to release it?
The Honeycomb sources will never be released. Google announced that at Google IO a few weeks ago, they will only release source code for Icecream Sandwich, which will unify phone (2.x) and Tablet (3.x) Android.
The reason they gave is Honeycomb is a hacked together version kinda rushed out for tablets, and they don't want anyone to see what a mess it is. (ok, that is my interpretation, their actual explanation is "this isn't a proper Android release as we took shortcuts to get it shipped ASAP for tablets, and we don't want devs to rely on these").

So is it for sure that we are not having custom roms for honeycomb 3.0 or 3.1? I remember someone (i believe it was bigrushdog) saying that the custom roms were just around the corner....and that was 1 month ago....
I believe some people were able to make some kind of homebrew ROMs based on the SDK. How that works exactly I don't know, someone with better Android technical knowledge than me might know.

They were able to port for other devices. But ports usually aren't the most stable things around - also no need for us to port...we have HC. We can't deodex and zip align without source. So anything a dev could do right now would be limited to some minor themeing.
You will never see a Honeycomb based custom rom (other then crappy reverse engineered SDK ones) because Google's not going to release 3.0 or 3.1 source code... You're gunna have to wait till Ice Cream Sandwich in Q4 to see any AOSP based ROMs (like CyanogenMod)

Seeing as how Google said they will require manufacturers to support their devices for 18 months if they wish to use Android on their products at I/O this year, I'd assume so.

Official ICS for our tab?

Read this article. It mentions other Samsung devices confirmed as getting ICS. Is the "galaxy tab 7" our device, or is it referring to the "plus" version?

It hasn't been 'unconfirmed' yet so you never know. .....
Sorry guys, but theres no ICS upgrade forthcoming from official channels. Samsung has confirmed that the entire Tab line, EXCEPT for the original (ours) will be getting the upgrade. Custom builds are likely in development with source code available but there'll be nothing official.

I think you are right
I'm not holding my breath. They made it pretty clear they weren't going to give it a Honeycomb upgrade, why would they do ICS?. After all, they would much rather you buy their new tablets.
Shame, thank god for the wonderful devs on here Personally, I think Samsung owes it to the people who went out and bought this tab to give us an official upgrade
Sent from my GT-P1000 using Tapatalk
I highly doubt that Samsung will offer an official upgrade to ICS for the original Tab. However, am I right in thinking that the hardware in the Tab basically matches the SoC and memory configuration in the Nexus S? If so surely that bodes well for the ability of the Tab to eventually run ICS seeing as the Nexus S will receive and official version of ICS.
Samsung doesn't even bother to give Gingerbread update for P-1010 and you would like ICS? Get serious. And no devs here bother to do anything for P-1010 also, not even CWM. This line of tabs is forgotten from anybody. If you want ICS buy yourself a proper tablet.
here it says "project stopped".
If you read the thread to the end you'll see that other guys are actively working on it.
Samsung just confirm the dual-core phones because they know that ics will work, for single cores like p1000 they will test first.

Possibly true for other Samsung devices but the P1000 and P1010 (and associated variants) will *not* receive an ICS update. Unfortunately, Samsung confirmed that the newer ones would be the only ones from the Tab line to get ICS.

Has the Official Icecream Sandwich rom been previewed yet?

Has anyone here seen a preview of the officiel Samsung icecream sandwich rom for the Galaxy Tab 10.1? Scheduled to be released by end of next month?
Unfortunately no. There's a number of preliminary roms leaked from samsung for the Galaxy II, but so far none was leaked for the GT 10.1. We anxiously wait for a leak, because drivers can be extracted from it and solve the non-working camera problem in recent CM9 builds and other problems as well.
In the meantime, if you want to feel ICS in your GT10.1, I really recommend the CM9 kangs in the dev forum. You'll feel like the tab worth the money after trying it

Whennn ??
I hope as soon as possible. I want a stable ics rom.
Although the Kangs are very very good over honeycomb, battery life in the last few builds has been horrible to say the least. I have been using ROMs from mabalito & pershoot since a month now but both seem to drain the battery pretty quickly even after all the wiping, etc. Even personal hotspot is very dodgy. And WIFI issues are far too many since the last 5-6 builds. It is very irritating to keep checking every morning whether a new ics build with a fix is out or not. I am going back to honeycomb until the samsung leaks start happening.

Can´t wait for samsung ICS, i use AOKP since months and i am very satisfied.
Now i actually use build 28, on the 10.1 TAB and on my Galaxy S Handy,
same look and feel on both devices.
The preview should basically be the same as Galaxy Note 10.1 with touchwiz Icecream Sandwich...coz more or less GTab 10.1 and GNote 10.1 fall in the same category of tablets...but however I prefer a full stock experience of AOSP...Hope touchwiz ICS won't disappoint like the touchwiz HC... ...still looking forward to Jellybean..!!

Samsung details Jelly Bean upgrade roadmap - Galaxy Tab 10.1/10.1v is not on the list

Our beloved tablet Galaxy 10.1/10.1.v never going to get official JB upgrade by Samsung!
Source Link:
http://www.slashgear.com/samsung-details-jelly-bean-upgrade-roadmap-and-its-not-all-good-24248943/
I know this is not Android development post, but I just want to make sure our beloved developers know the news, and they are the only ones left now that can bring fully functional JB ROMs to our tablet. I really hope they can start spending more time on JB ROM development.
Your justification/reason for posting this in the development section is definitely not sufficient.
I am disappointed by Samsung not upgrading GT 10.1 for three reasons
1. GT 10.1 was released *after* GS2, and GS2 gets JB.
2. GT 2 10.1 is so similar to GT 10.1, that if Samsung just pays a little more effort, they can upgrade GT 10.1, too.
3. GT 10.1 was a flagship device, just last year.
Probably it is because GT 10.1 did not sell well as Samsung expected, due to iPad or all that Apple legal stuff. Well, but I can still enjoy GT 10.1 as it is (4.0). And I hope Samsung would release a bigger and faster one (like 12 inch or something). Then I would sell GT 10.1 cheaply and move on to that device.
Well it is ok, i hate touchwiz as a lot of people and we have good developers that will bring CM10 full functionally, but it is mean that probably we will have problems with drivers for futures updates.
start a facebook and twitter protest along with a youtube video
I bet they will pay attention. At the least force them to release the code so others can develop it.
The points made above are very valid.
I though part of the Google agreement was devices had to be upgradeable for up to 18 months for something like that.
You think a company like Samsung would have learned from Microsoft to make their devices and software work for all of their hardware just like installing MS Windows across different brands.

That is what Google stated at I/O 2011. So this makes me wonder... 18 months from when the GTab 10.1 I/O released (March 2011) or when it released in the US (June 2011), international (July 2011;not sure cause I didn't pay attention to that release). We are within that window when they said that JB will release in Q4 for the listed devices. We are DEFINITELY in that window from when JB was announced.
That will teach us, samsung is fast abandoning devices as well as releasing them. Note to self, next time stick to everything nexus.

I agree about touchwiz, but you have to think like this: they need to release JB, so that our developer can get all the required drivers for camera and other stuff. This makes development much faster. If you check current Alpha/Experimental CM10 JB ROMs, front cam not working.
I felt really bad when I read the news, because I still really like my Galaxy Tab 10.1 even if it is 1 year old.

Yes but i think 3.1 kernel its only for P7500 i have the P7510 wifi version, someplace i look for an experimental kernel 3.1 but microphone doesnt work.
Samsung are truly morons with this crap. The Tab was my last chance with them and they just blew it.. This was their 3rd strike. My 2 year old Nexus S 4G with 512mb of RAM gets an official JB upgrade from Google (and runs great) yet the tab with a dual core and 1gb of RAM Samsung decide to skip over. Google is all about getting the most out of a product and Samsung (who ironically makes the Nexus S) is all about getting the most out of your wallet.
I had a hunch this was going to happen, but I'm still annoyed. Not so much because I can't just root, etc..... but the fact that they've given the finger to those that bought it while they support older products still. Samsung was even present when Google announced the "Android Update Alliance". Um........... atleast give us working drivers, etc.

The 3.1 kernel Samsung released is for both P7500 and P7510. If you're running official ICS now, you're using 3.1 kernel.

it is official news from Samsung. I just need to find the official press release link and post here. They did not say no JB for Galaxy Tab 10.1, but they did NOT included it on their JB road-map for this year and next year, so this should tell you something, unless Samsung decides to include it at last minute.
The only comments seen publically are from sites other than samsun. Sammobile is not an official site and their source was not samsung either. Suggest you all calm down. Besides, it would be like expecting win7to run on a win 95 computer expecting updates for ever more
