Google to target Kindle Fire with Nexus Tablet, less than $199 - Kindle Fire General

Google may come out with its Nexus Tablet. New rumors are saying it could be targeting Kindle Fire.
7-inch, Android 4.0, and <$199
What do you think? I don't think its gonna happen.
Source

Someone puts out a tablet of decent quality that is a WiFi based 7" form factor with GPS and basic front facing camera and a mic along the lines of a KF and they are going to sell... Heck I would look at it.

I'd be all over that, but it is way to good to be true, so I'm not resting any hopes on it becoming reality.
Sent from my rough sketch of a Vibrant on a brick.

It would definately be nice, but if it really does happen it could help on development for our devices as well so I say go for it google.

Seems too good to be true, but I'd give it a look. I wonder if they'd have to sell it at a loss with those numbers (specs/price).

I could see them wanting to to push Google Books, Google mp3's, the Android Market and other Google services. The problem is to have a "true" Google Experience device it would need GPS(for Google Nav), a camera(for Google Face unlocker and other stuff - probably front and back Cam's(You Tube)) , NFC (for Google Wallet). etc., etc. Overall a fully feature packed high end tablet with cutting edge specs.
It would probably cost them $300 to make it. I just don't see any way they would bother to build it to put it up against the Kindle Fire at $199. I also can't imagine them building a "Google" tablet anyway as it would destroy it's software partners tablet market.

I'd drop my fire in a second if this happened, but I'm not holding my breath.

I wouldn't drop my kindle, but I'd definitely be interested in purchasing a Google tablet.

Yeah, not without an otterbox defender case on

A Google Experience tablet, the same price as the Fire?
I'd sell mine on eBay as soon as the "Nexus" tablet was confirmed to be real. If you wait until it's released, the market would be flooded with used Fires, dropping its value significantly.

I would buy this quickly if it had good build quality and didn't have a locked bootloader

I don't really care. I like my Fire and I'm keeping it.

Would definitely buy it but don't believe it would happen.

Hey guys!
Not to burst everyones' bubble, but the original source of this rumor is a less than reputable news site (DigiTimes). I don't doubt that Google is going to release a Nexus tablet, but it will be more along the lines of what Eric Schmidt said back in December - "In the next six months we plan to market a tablet of the highest quality". The Nexus line has always been Google's premium line, and with that there has always been a premium price tag.

^Exactly. There's no way such a device would come in under $200 based on that. I'd still consider one but I bought the KF because of the price and value. I don't see Google topping that ratio.
However, for an early upgrade offer from Verizon and I'm getting a Galaxy Nexus, dammit!

Just placed pre-order for the Amazon tablet. Don't know if it will replace my galaxy tab but for $200 the Amazon tablet looks like a good deal. Also I like the 7 inch better than the 10. I think this will force all others to seriously think about their tablet pricing.
What are your thoughts?

HPs firesale was evidence that pricing can be king outside of the iOS ecosystem, Im personally not interested in one, but I do like the pricing, it could put pressure on other OEMs to drop their prices, look at RIM there are starting to move more playbooks since they are starting to price cut
This also goes to show you how big of a mark up these things have
I just preordered mine as well. I'm crossing my fingers that this thing has bluetooth. Otherwise no external keyboard.

No bluetooth. Complete specs at the Amazon Landing Page.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0051VVOB2/ref=tsm_1_bl_aw?tag=vglnk-c1655-20
But it does have USB 2.0, so you could plug in a Bluetooth adapter. Potential issue: battery life issues from adapter.

Depending on the chipset used, it might have latent bluetooth, just like the Nook Color.
Doesn't look like it has a SD slot either. With just 8Gb storage a few movies etc will fill that up.

There are two considerations I take in above all else these days when I consider a purchase, especially for phone/smaller computing devices.
1. Price to performance (lets be real, tablets are *finally* getting out of over priced stage.)
2. What the support here at XDA is going to be like.
I can handle getting a "mid ranged" device if the price is right.
IF there are enough tweaks, roms, and third party support.
A "Cheap" and "Midranged" tablet can go toe to toe with the best of them.
*if* I consider a tablet.. the lenovo A1 and Amazon Kindle Fire are going to be on the top of the list, because I am suspecting I'll see strong support on both.
Then again, being able to "reverse" whatever I do is also important.

Ah! I see. Good point.
The Nook has "latent Bluetooth" but no antenna so it's not very useful.
The new Kindle looks nice, but no 3G/4G (yet). If they do offer it with mobile data it will probably be locked to one carrier. That and being stuck with Amazon's app store makes it a non-starter for me. I'll stick with my old Galaxy 7" for non-home use for now.

Not quite true.
I'm not impressed what amazon did. Combine their services with good hardware and "real" Android Honeycomb/ice cream sandwich and they might have a winner.
But with this, medium hardware (RAM, int storage, display resolution), missing components, a bit heavy, depends on cyanogen mod to get a real taste of Android, I'm not sure. I see little more than a new Nook color.
With the support of the amazon services like music, video and appstore (since there is no market at least at the beginning) it might be interesting for some people. But for me the 7.7 seems like a much better choice if you look for something smaller than 10.1 or 8.9, even if it costs twice as much.

Price is the key though, look what the recent HP firesale did, this will be a mass product aimed at those wanting their first fray into tablets, other manufacturers will need to take note if they want their product to sell. At the way the current global financial state is in Amazon have got a winner here.

Damn for $199, I'd love to buy it.
Does anyone know if true Android can be hacked or developed for the Kindle fire? It's android based but it doesn't run honeycomb or anything.
I know the Blackberry playbook you cant but that's cause it's RIM software and their security stuff.
It'd be cool if there was a lot of support for it and you can flash all different kinds of ROMs and stuff.

What do HP touchpad firesale and every china tablet in common (other that the 99$ price tag)? You buy the thing, get frustrated that it doesn't do what you expected and you get a "real" tablet. We have a saying here, if you buy cheap you end up paying twice.
I'm not arguing that it won't sell,it will probably sell pretty good. but I'm saying it's not what it could've been. And I don't think 199$ is particularly cheap for that tablet. It's a good price but not really cheap considering what you give up.
And don't forget everyone who has no access to the amazon services like video and cloud music, which is half of europe. They would get even less out of it but I don't think that it'll be available here.
I think it takes more than a good price to make a winner.
But I don't think amazon really wants to play the tablet game. They want to give you an easier way to subscribe to and consume their content and that's what they can archive with the kindle fire.
I'll wait for the "Fire" app to show up. You know Amazon is going offer one before long.

I'm sure it can be cracked in one way or another. OMAP4 is something a lot of devs have experience with, and I doubt they're deviating much from the components we keep seeing on other platforms.
I'd like to believe that this will be as easy to root as the Nook Color, but given that Amazon has been playing cat-and-mouse with hackers and the older Kindles, I doubt it. Amazon didn't preen their own app store for the last year for nothing, and that's only one content channel they want to own. An open platform means most people will probably install the default Google Market and avoid Amazon's store altogether. The OMAP has some security features in the same vein as the Tegra2, and I'd be surprised if it's not as locked down as the Atrix was before the unlockable bootloader.
That being said, there's a nice tool out there for booting a kernel/ramdisk (read:recovery) OMAP4 over USB, so should Amazon decide to have a change of heart it will be a quick test to tell if the boot process is as easy to hijack as the Nook.
Why not just buy a Galaxy Tab 7" WiFi? Or a used 3g/carrier-branded version on Craigslist. Both can be had for about the same prices as the K-Fire, and they're a whole lot more functional.
Sure, it's single core, but it's single core Hummingbird/SGX540, which is still pretty competitive with the chipset in the PlayKindleBookFire, especially in relation to graphics.
It's also lighter, has a LOT more functionality (GPS, Bluetooth, light sensor, microphone, etc.). And, it's not locked down to the Amazon infrastructure, and has a pretty good XDA community already.
You can still use the Kindle app, but you can also read ePubs, use Google Music, Netflix, etc.

Amazon To Begin Selling Ad Space On Kindle Fire’s Welcome Screen For $600,000

Amazon is going to start selling adspace on there Kindle's now that they have sold millions. If you are using the default rom, you will start to see intrusive and annoying ad's. It would also make sense they may lock the boot loader for the ad to appear for a full two months.
In a smart and most likely controversial move, Amazon has just announced the ability to purchase ad space on their popular Kindle Fire tablets. For $600,000, your ad will be displayed on the boot-up screen of every Kindle Fire for 2 full months. This business model could prove to be a great way to offer high-end tablets at a much lower price given the manufacturer is willing to make up the costs of production in ad sales. It’s surprising that Google themselves have not already put this into action, but with Google I/O 2012 just a little over a month away, it wouldn’t be too surprising to see the big “G” follow suit.
The details have yet to be fully ironed out and many questions and concerns have already made some noise on the matter. So is Amazon going to incorporate this change on all existing and new tablets or will this just be for the new adopters? I kind of feel like it’s a little late in the game for Amazon to all of a sudden make this change for current Kindle Fire owners. You have been enjoying an ad free experience this whole time and all of a sudden you are going to be bombarded with ads, something most of you I am sure did not sign up for from the start. Sadly, this is the new reality if we are to get products at low cost or even free. Take apps in the Google Play Store, for instance. We all have downloaded a free app in the past that was ad free and then updated to a new version with sneak attack ad incorporation.
The Kindle Fire aside, I would certainly like to see more options for consumers in the future and I believe that selling mobile devices at a cheaper cost in exchange for advertisements is a nice start.

I was thinking the same thing and checked out CL and was stunned. Fire's are hemorrhaging on that site for as low as $75 used and $100 new/unopened. So I'm probably going to pass on this new toy from Google as nice as it is...
I'm pretty confident that besides Skype, there really isn't much I would do on that tablet than I can already do on the Fire (I don't use Bluetooth on it and I don't play games on it...so...).
Not saying my choice is the right one for everyone...but the extra $125 I would have to spend doesn't really justify it for me.

Do you have a mother, sister, brother, or even a father that might like this Kindle Fire? (Especially a mother, sister or other female family member.) You can explain to your girl that you really appreciate the thoughtfulness of her getting it for you but you've decide that you really want person XYZ to have it and you've got your eye on device ABC when it comes out. Of course some variation might be needed, but if you put enough thoughtfulness into how you explain it then your girl can hardly argue with you otherwise she'll look like a real *****.... but presentation is key.

[THOUGHT] The Nexus 7 Isn't Really the Xoom's Successor

The more I think about this, the more I'm convinced that, in the Google Experience Device world, the Nexus 7 isn't really the Xoom successor that everyone thought it was going to be.
I first started tossing this idea around when I saw that the Nexus 7 runs a hybrid phone/tablet UI that more resembles phone mode than tablet mode. Add to this the fact that the Xoom is still the only Google Experience Device that showcases Android in full tablet mode, plus the fact that there appears to be no plan for a 10" Nexus 7, and I'm willing to put down money that in 6-8 months, we'll see Google partnering with an OEM to bring a new 10" GED tablet to the market. I would guess that it would be paired with Android 5.0. That would be the real successor to the Xoom. And why replace the Xoom now anyway? Tablets have a longer technological shelf life than smart phones do and, with the price drops, the Xoom still holds its own with tablets twice its price.
Am I way off here? What do you guys think?

Yeah, the nexus 7 sounds fun but I've got a great phone and my Xoom hasn't even started showing its age--technologically speaking. Though I'm tempted to get a new toy, I think for now I'll skip the nexus 7, although a 7 inch tab is a very nice size to hold. Good for game playing.

I agree with OP.
The thing about the newer processors is that only a small 1% of applications take advantage of them. Other than a few games, supports more video codecs, there isn't much more practical usage over tegra 2. There isn't much practical reasons WHY I should. It won't give me many features that the xoom can't do outside of NFC/IPS screen/few select games. I will wait until a 10.1 inch tablet is at the $200 price range later this year before I even bother considering an upgrade. Tegra 2 > Tegra 2 is like going to i5 to an i7 on a windows computer. You won't see a huge noticeable difference from day to day use until you try to run a game/encode a video/run a file server/have 20 open programs that shows it grunt.

Thankfully european Xoom has the same exact hardware of american Xoom so we can use the same ROMs.
A Motorola Nexus will be ok only if they remove the difference between America and rest of the world
OP thinks what I think.
I too saw the phone mode, and thought

Well you have to remember that Google is also an American company.. So it's only legally easy for them to give us stuff first. You guys governments in Europe and Asia sucks Donkey balls with all those regulations about hardware and software. That's why you guys get late updates and get left out when Google products launch.
So your blame for these delays is blindly misguided my brother. Motorola and Google are not the blame.

I think down the line there will be a Nexus 10 released to compete against the iPad. The Xoom does still seem to be a very good device. Google has to still develop with the Xoom that's why it continues to be updated right along with all the latest Android software. Google knows Androids time is now and they are slowly and methodically pushing Android OS with new innovations and will ultimately push Apple off the top for good.
I am definitely glad I bought the Xoom - the announcement that we'll officially get 4.1 surprised me.
Responding to the OP, no I would not think a 7" Nexus succeeds a 10" Xoom!

And me also - quite a nice surprise.
The Nexus 7 definitely feels like a portal for Google content, not the next leap forward in tablet computing. For my use case, I'll be flashing a Jelly Bean ROM and be just fine.

You're telling me that Samsung, HTC, Sony and Google itself with Nexus devices have magical powers that gives them the ability to update their devices while the little Motorola can't do anything?
Think before posting, please.
My next tab will either be a >10" GED with a full usb port, screen upgrade and a really good processor or I'll go back to using a laptop. I really see no value in a smaller tab. My phone has a 5" display, why would I buy a 7" tab? A whole other device to pay for, update, and tweak for a rather minor screen jump. Maybe I could use a Bluetooth for talking and keep it in my pocket, but it wouldn't fit comfortably in the clothes I wear to work unless cargo khaki's become business casual.

Kindle Fire 2

If they do come out with a 10-incher, I hope it comes with bluetooth. I love accessories and it would make me totally happy if I can use a bluetooth keyboard with it.
I just want a bigger screen, different shelf styles, and that's pretty much it. Maybe Bluetooth, but I don't care too much about that. I got approved for an Amazon Rewards card yesterday, so I'm pretty much set for life, they officially own my soul.

What does a Amazon Rewards card give you that sets you for life?
As far as a tablet goes...if they add all that stuff. SD card slot, microphone, bluetooth, cameras, etc...they are basically entering the real tablet world (lets face it...the Fire is a color eReader) and that puts them into a different market going head to head with the Nexus 7, Galaxy Tab line, etc. They will have a hard time beating something like the Nexus 7...
Although if they had color eInk...that would be cool. I never realized how much eye strain reading a book on a non-eInk screen would cause until now. LOL
An micro SD card slot would be nice but doubt it will have one. Bluetooth would also be nice. Or maybe volume buttons on it. I don't mind the on-screen ones but I would like a physical button myself.

I've got one too, its a credit card for every dollar you spend from amazon purchase you get 3 points($0.03) back 2 points for gas and I think restaurants and 1 point for everything else.
Its a great card as long as you pay it off every month cause the interest rates are high. I buy everything with that card the just pay it off Like right now I have around 4000 points($40) I can use on an amazon purchase.

I'd like to see Jelly Bean but doubt it. A camera would be nice, and bluetooth. Micro SD slot of course. The Play store. For internals I really would like to see a quad-core processor. Something that can handle games better. Tired of lag.
I expect that the specs for the Kindle Fire 2 will be about the same as the nexus tablet. It be great if Amazon tried to one up them though. Maybe include an sdcard slot or video out. Amazon isn't selling higher capacity Kindles so it couldn't hurt to have the sd slot.
Microphone, camera, volume buttons and Micro SD slot. Anything more would be nice.

I say a micro SD card slot' camera and a mic. It would also be pretty cool if it came with the Amazon app store and Google play store. We shouldn't have to root it to get the apps we want.

I'll be honest, I'd find it extremely unlikely that they are going to release a new Kindle at the end of this month without an actual announcement by now.
That said, I would like to see them compete with the Google Nexus for specs. It'd be really nice if they released an 10" tablet that's a competitive price rather than slapping a $500 price tag on it like most companies do.
I would have to doubt that they add the Play store because to sell it for $200 they planed to make the money that they were losing by selling large amounts of content.

I think the original info on this said that they would make an announcement on it by the end of this month. We'll see. I think it will do very well.

If you've been googling "10 inch kindle fire" for the past few days like I have, then you can see that there are many rumors that Amazon is eyeing July 31 as an announcement day ^_^
