[GUIDE] How to view tablet websites in CM7 - Kindle Fire General

By setting the user agent to match the Xoom with honeycomb, I was able to load the tablet version of websites, while still being viewed as an Android device. Here is the user agent I used:
Mozilla/5.0 (Linux;U; Android3.0.1; en-us; XoomBuild/HWI69)AppleWebKit/534.13 (KHTML,likeGecko) Version/4.0 Safari/534.13
Just copy and paste this as the custom user agent string in Dolphin and you should be good to go!
Here is a website with a list of a bunch of user agents, for those who are interested: http://www.zytrax.com/tech/web/mobile_ids.html
--- Original Post
Is there a way to enable the tablet version of websites on my Fire? I know I can use the iPad user agent, but I would like websites to recognize it as an Android device. I am currently using Dolphin HD on CM7. I found a thread once for the HP Touchpad with a similar question, but I don't think a solution was found.

The issue with this is that websites do not recognize the fire with CM7 as a tablet, so they load the phone version instead. Google is a good example.

i'm using dolphin on stock os - thaught it's only on the browser settings - tried one of the other settings ? - "ipad" will not work, "custom" maybe

Are you seeing the tablet version of websites with the stock Amazon OS?

do you have a site where i can test it ? - the google search seems to know only mobile (where i'm with setting "android") or normal

Sounds to me like you're not getting the tablet version of websites either. Google is a good site to test with. I think the trick will be a custom user agent, I'm just not sure what it would be. Now that I am thinking about it, theoretically you should be able to get the tablet version of sites from your phone as well if a custom user agent will work.
Sent via my internet connected mobile cellular telephone.

i think if the site has a portion for tablet and we set the custom useragent to "Tablet" (if it's the right name) then it should work

Update: I just tested with my phone, and by setting the user agent to iPad, I was able to pull up the tablet version of Google from my phone. But this leaves me in the same situation as earlier: my device is recognized as an iPad, and not as Android.

Just tried setting the agent to "tablet", and it brought up what looked like an older version of Google, but not the tablet version of the site. From what I can tell, sites are using different methods to determine if you are using a tablet. Perhaps if we can find the user agent from a honeycomb tablet, we can get it to work.

I updated the OP with a user agent that should work. I will test on my Fire when I get home. Thanks for your help!

I just got home and tested the new user agent string, and I can confirm that it works. I am seeing the tablet version of Google on my Kindle Fire using Dolphin HD.

can't get it - must have a typo somewhere ...
update: had a typo - works perfect !!!

Hi
Does anyone know how I can stop my streak from displaying mobile versions of sites I view?
Thanks
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
Its done siteside. There should be an option on the page you're viewing to view full site. Or have a look at the URL and usually it'll have m.URL.com or /mobile/ in it which you can change.
You'll need to run a browser that doesn't identify itself as a mobile version. Some browsers have an option in settings.

Type about:debug in the URL bar and press Go.
It doesn't seem like anything happens, but it does........press menu - Settings - now there's a "debuger" section, go to UAString and tap.........choose desktop.....now websites see it as a desktop........
Jenn over at streaksmart.com posted a how to not so very long after the Streak launched...its not 100% but it works for some sites...

Anyone know how to make this stick permanently? A lot of sites seem to ignore the user-agent string whenever I try it, or at least when I type "about:debug" and then go to the relevant settings section it's always set to "Desktop" yet sites ignore it and keep going to mobile versions! The root of the SD card seems to also get filled up with .trace files for each site visited while in the debug mode...
The lack of a permanent UA String change is extremely annoying for certain sites such as www.nationalrail.co.uk where there isn't a "full site" link anywhere and the mobile version is rubbish. The service specific app in Market for this website is £3+ as well!
Facebook is another website that completely ignores the user agent string and will go to mobile (or "Touch") sites regardless.
I know there's a free Android Facebook app, but I don't WANT to have to use an app, I completely agree with the RIM guy saying "there's a website for that"
Sometimes the website will behave when you do the about:debug cycle, but it's hit and miss whether it will still behave when you click any link! Full Facebook, for example, reverts to the "Touch" version when you click "home" at the top...
Please anyone, if you know how, please let me know how I can PERMANENTLY disable ALL mobile optimised sites? I don't want to EVER see another "m.website.com/wap" ever again!
I suggest you try using Dolphin HD Browser.
After I used it a few times, I've set it to my default browser and it works for every website I've tried so far.
It's from the market and free! In addition, there are no ads except if you use add-ons, and only show up when you run the add-ons. Alternatively, you can always buy a license.
The only add-on it comes with is bookmarks at the beginning, and I personally use a different color theme add-on. As long as you don't run either, you will not get any ads! The user-agent switcher is a built in functionality and not an add-on (in addition to a plethora of other options).

Thanks for the reply, I'll give it a go and see how I get on with it. Already tried Fennec and Opera and neither felt as good or fast as the stock Froyo browser...

Instal Dolphin HD then an add-on called 'desktop toggles', you can then switch between mobile and web view at will

Enter "about:useragent" in the address bar, and select the Desktop user agent.
It doesn't persist though, which is annoying!

Also look at the foot of the web page concerned..... If it can go to Desktop you should see an option named 'Classic'. If so click on it to change from Mobile view to Desktop.

I can change the user agent, but seems not to be stored. if I enter again in "about:useragent", the "custom" option remains selected.

Using Dolphin HD browser on US T-Mo, agent switched to Desktop and no luck - it would still go to mobile version. Same settings in the same browser on my EVO - no problem - always takes me to a full website. I hope there is some other solution. Otherwise it is very annoying not to be able to see full NY Times site...

Well! Too many of xda member faced this problem. But there is no such probbaly tweak to prevent the Tab access defaut webpage from it's stock browser.
Anybody has found a solution ? It's super annoying not to be able to see the "normal" websites given the form factor of the Tab...
Are you guys talking about the homepage? Or the fact that the stock browser reverts to mobile user agent upon closing? The stock browser will not save user agent settings after being closed. Download a new broswer. Don't rely on stock.

The thing is... why should you have to download a different browser just to be able to view web sites in desktop mode ~ and even then different browsers don't necessarily give you a desktop view.
As an example I have Dolphin HD installed and if you attempt to access either ITVPlayer or the BBC web site you get the mobile version.
sadly, you need to re-do the about:useragent everytime you completely close the browser. Also, on stock UK firmwares (Even JJ7) iPlayer doesn't work even with desktop mode selected. Need to be on JM6 or JMA for the fixed browser.

It works on JM6 ? OK, good to know
Try skyfire.
It works for mine (T-Mobile US version)
if you wants normal desktop browsing try Miren Browser and in the options set the Desktop version( or the ipad version, it works)
however,
some sites (like megavideo) will go further than a User Agent and try to guess if you are really on a desktop or not, to redirect you to some annoying ads and jo-games.com
if you want to avoid that use NetFront Live Browser, it's the best low level changer browser for android so far, you won't be dissapointed and its kind of tablet optimized.

type about:debug in the browser bar
(in 2.2)
you would scroll down to the bottom of the menu list and in settings there is a setting called user agent. turn it to desktop.
Yea If you dont see a setting for useragent strings try putting "aboug:debug" in the browser address bar. Nothing will happen, but check the menu settings again and see if the option becomes available. I would assume useragent string would be available by default in the new chromey browser, but who knows.
edit: grrrr.. generic.imitation beat me
Thanks....I didn't see this at the bottom of the websites before, but now I have the option to view the full site.
the "about:debug" works i just did it on my xoom
it puts a debug category in the settings and under "UAString" select Desktop
Just curious if anyone else have to do this every so often? I would change mine to desktop and surf to droid-life, which would display the full site but the next time I fire up the browser, droid-life would display the mobile site until I select desktop in settings again (which was already selected). This happens on other sites as well.

Update 1.2 Hulu hack?

Hi I did the update to 1.2 does anyone know how to make this hulu hack work for NC 1.2
--------
mobilecrunch . com /2010/ 05/ 24/ how-to-watch-hulu-on-android-2-2
(note remove spaces)
First up, open up your browser. Now, type “about:debug” (without the quotes, silly) and hit go. Click “Settings”, and scroll on down to the bottom to reveal the dastardly tricky “UAString”.
This is where the plan gets really cunning: you now change your user agent string — the bit of info that tells a website what type of device you are running — to “Desktop”.
From now on, Hulu (and every other website) will think you’re accessing it from — you guessed it — a desktop PC rather than a mobile device.
---------
thanks in advance
Hulu disabled the ability to do this on any android device about a day after somebody figured it out. There is a hacked Flash out there somewhere that can fool Hulu, but there won't be a way to run it until somebody roots 1.2.
That being said, doing the above trick to edit the UA string is still good because it gives you the real version of websites in general.
Try PlayOn. They now have a mobile setup and an Android App. I use it on my nook running Nookie FroYo.
Basically you install PlayOn on a PC in your house. Then you install the PlayOn app on the nook. You have to connect the PlayOn app to the PlayOn server via the same WiFi the first time, but after that you can watch Hulu, Netflix, Amazon VOD, and many others on your nook anywhere you have an internet connection!
No need for about:debug on Stock. Just go to settings and UA Changer is at the Top. Only Desktop and Mobile modes though.

Don't know about that site but you can try Yahoo.com and see how it works.
Yahoo does have options to view as mobile or desktop
Are you using one of the Dolphin plugs to switch between desktop/mobile? They seem to work well for me. That said, an individual site could try to detect your system type in a variety of ways. Also, if it is a flash-based site, then it will be able to look at your libflashplayer.so. You can get get a "massaged" flash library that will identify as a desktop.
