[Q] Browser default to mobile version of websites - Xoom General

Just got my Xoom...they waived the activation fee and I got a 25% discount on accesories...but that is all beside the point....
The browser defaults to the mobile version of websites. If anyone aware of a way to change that?

Change the browser user-agent to desktop? That what I do using Dolphin HD on the gTablet.

type about:debug in the browser bar
(in 2.2)
you would scroll down to the bottom of the menu list and in settings there is a setting called user agent. turn it to desktop.

Yea If you dont see a setting for useragent strings try putting "aboug:debug" in the browser address bar. Nothing will happen, but check the menu settings again and see if the option becomes available. I would assume useragent string would be available by default in the new chromey browser, but who knows.
edit: grrrr.. generic.imitation beat me

Thanks....I didn't see this at the bottom of the websites before, but now I have the option to view the full site.

the "about:debug" works i just did it on my xoom
it puts a debug category in the settings and under "UAString" select Desktop

Just curious if anyone else have to do this every so often? I would change mine to desktop and surf to droid-life, which would display the full site but the next time I fire up the browser, droid-life would display the mobile site until I select desktop in settings again (which was already selected). This happens on other sites as well.

debug in browser worked for me. Great simple tip. Thanks guys

Same problem here.

Definitely only a temporary fix. Hopefully an update comes soon or a good replacement browser... the mobile version thing is literally the only thing I don't like about this browser.

Somehow Facebook knows. It still sent me to their mobile site.

UAStrings and mobile versions of websites.

I have noticed that the new browser version in 2.2 allows you to define a custom UAString which made me happy. I went and found all the info to my actual desktop's browser and input it into the settings. Yet I am still unable to see some websites in their desktop views.
Anyone know of a fix?
More info:
UAString: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US) AppleWebKit/533.4 (KHTML, like Gecko) Iron/5.0.381.0 Chrome/5.0.381 Safari/533.4
Have also tried the other built in options.
Enable mobile view: UNCHECKED
They could be matching you to mobile via your IP address. Does that happen over WiFi too, or just cell data?
Good idea. It was on 3G. I'll try WiFi now. Thanks.
Nah, still mobile on Wifi. Made sure the settings were still applied.
I've been using user-agent-string.info/parse to make sure the strings are working.
Have you tried going to http://whatsmyuseragent.com? I noticed that after changing my ua string to internet explorer 6 default, it still showed the android user agent when checking with the site above.

Thanks for the response. That website does show that my UA is set to Firefox's UA copied from my computer.
This is driving me nuts lol. What else on my phone can be letting the browser know I'm on a phone?
I like the default browser as well, so I don't really want to switch to Dolphin or anything.
I guess there is nothing then.
do this...
try typing "about:debug" into the http adress bar, (no quotes) then hit "go" or enter ...whatever....nothing will appear to change...then go to settings, uastrings and make sure desktop is checked. try going to a webpage...it should now work.
Also try clearing your cache/cookies.

If you've been through all of that, try disabling javascript and flash. Its probably client side.

If you would kindly read above, you would notice that I am able to change my UAString to whatever I want let alone to "Desktop". Regardless, I appreciate your interest and wanting to contribute to the matter.
I have tried clearing the cache/cookies/history/location data and turned off "Enable location" just in case it somehow could tell from that to no avail.
I just tried turning off Java and Flash and still nothing.

A porn site, redtube, but that part doesn't matter to me. It's just something that is annoying me.
It definitely has something to do with the HTC browser. I just loaded CM6 and when you set the user agent to desktop, it loads the FULL page. Try out eskimotube and see the difference. P.S. its a porn site.....

I think that's it. Dolphin is loading it just fine so it would have to be something in between the HTC browser's settings and the OS itself, which would be the browser.
Thanks a lot. I feel better now that it has been figured out.

By coincidence I did this earlier today to try to get it to visit a non-mobile version of a website, and it worked. Without ever visiting the site OP mentioned (hence no cookies), it loaded the desktop version fine.
Edit: Someone above said that it may be the Sense browser specific, this was on CM6.
Edit edit: Tried clearing cookies, switching UA to Android, loading site, then switching back to Desktop UA, and it loaded the desktop version. So yeah, Sense specific.

[Q] Turn off Mobile Browsing, and download .rar files

Trying to download .rar files says "Cannot Download, The Content is not supported on this phone. " Anybody found a way around this? (Yeah we could all use our Pc's but seriously)
I remember this happening when I had the samsung moment and I sent that thing back.
Also. Has anybody found a way to turn off mobile Browsing? So annoying
TIA
Download astro file manager. In the settings for that program you can turn off browser restrictions on what files you can download.
I too would like to know how to disable mobile browsing on the default browser. I feel kind of stupid that I can't find the setting, but the more I look and don't find it, I'm beginning to think Samsung is stupid for removing the option...
My co-worker showed me how to do it. Type "about:debug" (without the " ")in the address bar then go to Settings and you'll have some new options at the bottom. Change the UAString from Android to Desktop and voila. Full desktop browsing experience.
Sometimes you just gotta dl stuff on the puter. Anyways, here's download crutch. People say get this program or that because it's built in. Here's the plugin without the program, just in case you don't have any need for the main program.

I have it on my phone but can't upload from it. I wish the devs would enable uploading from a browser.

wish I knew about this long ago! THANK YOU!
Edit: just realized this OP was from a while back, haha
ok, so a couple of questions about that "about:debug"
1. any way to get it to default to desktop? If you exit the browser you have to type and select it again
2. why is "iPhone browser" an option????
3. I no longer have dk28 installed (waiting for OTA froyo) but for those with working flash, will something like hulu work in full blown desktop mode (or iPhone mode)? My gut still says no, but when I visit hulu in iPhone mode it asks me to download the hulu application and in desktop mode it says nothing about being on android platform -- just that I don't have flash.

it dont work it says u need 10.0.32 also u could use skifire web browser from the app store it has flash built in.
Some websites that use browser detection don't properly recognize the android webkit browser. But they do recognize iphone. So to render some websites properly in a mobile view you can pretend your an iphone...luckily it doesn't turn you into a douche bag iphone user when activated.

Enter "about:useragent" in the address bar, and select the Desktop user agent.
It doesn't persist though, which is annoying!

Also look at the foot of the web page concerned..... If it can go to Desktop you should see an option named 'Classic'. If so click on it to change from Mobile view to Desktop.
a former iphone zombie here, they had a sbsettings toggle called user agent faker... for android the equiv would be a toggle switch widget on the desktop?... not sure if its out there, been searching though. looking for a persistant toggle..

I can change the user agent, but seems not to be stored. if I enter again in "about:useragent", the "custom" option remains selected.
Or just download Dolphin HD browser, then in the browser,go to settings>Useragent and choose desktop instead of Mobile by default, worked great for me.
Dolphin HD browser + euro firmware did the trick for me.

Using Dolphin HD browser on US T-Mo, agent switched to Desktop and no luck - it would still go to mobile version. Same settings in the same browser on my EVO - no problem - always takes me to a full website. I hope there is some other solution. Otherwise it is very annoying not to be able to see full NY Times site...

Well! Too many of xda member faced this problem. But there is no such probbaly tweak to prevent the Tab access defaut webpage from it's stock browser.
Anybody has found a solution ? It's super annoying not to be able to see the "normal" websites given the form factor of the Tab...
Are you guys talking about the homepage? Or the fact that the stock browser reverts to mobile user agent upon closing? The stock browser will not save user agent settings after being closed. Download a new broswer. Don't rely on stock.

The thing is... why should you have to download a different browser just to be able to view web sites in desktop mode ~ and even then different browsers don't necessarily give you a desktop view.
As an example I have Dolphin HD installed and if you attempt to access either ITVPlayer or the BBC web site you get the mobile version.
sadly, you need to re-do the about:useragent everytime you completely close the browser. Also, on stock UK firmwares (Even JJ7) iPlayer doesn't work even with desktop mode selected. Need to be on JM6 or JMA for the fixed browser.

It works on JM6 ? OK, good to know
Try skyfire.
It works for mine (T-Mobile US version)
if you wants normal desktop browsing try Miren Browser and in the options set the Desktop version( or the ipad version, it works)
however,
some sites (like megavideo) will go further than a User Agent and try to guess if you are really on a desktop or not, to redirect you to some annoying ads and jo-games.com
if you want to avoid that use NetFront Live Browser, it's the best low level changer browser for android so far, you won't be dissapointed and its kind of tablet optimized.

Froyo Browser, stop mobile sites view

Have tried googling on here and elsewhere, but I want to stop getting a mobile view of web sites. For example bbc.co.uk gives a mobile view. I have tried typing "about:debug" to get the extra settings in the settings menu, but nothing that helps appears.
I have also typed about:useragent in the browsers’ address bar,
which brings up several options for the useragent (Android,Iphone,Desktop, Lismore and custom) I have tried all these but still no luck
I am on JP6
TIA
I was pretty annoyed by this too ... now I am using skyfire if I want to use a website in the full view.
Not sure it can be changed easily on the stock browser
download the "Steel" browser. In settings, you can set the user agent to "Desktop".
You can also upgrade the stock browser via the SGS Tools app in order to add the user agent setting.
Just open the browser and in the address bar type:
about:useragent
Press GO...
You will get an option screen, just select Desktop and press OK? should work, Im rooted on JPU though?
about:useragent
This works fine, was able to access sites on android standard browser without getting mobile sites.
The only problem is that it does not survive power off and would have to be re-entered if you were to power your phone off.
Thanks for the info.

[Q] Disabling Mobile Sites in the Browser

On my Evo, there is an option in the settings to disable Mobile Sites... has anyone found a way to disable mobile sites on the Xoom?
In my opinion, Honeycomb should have this option on by default!!! It is not built for 'mobile' version of sites... I enjoy the browsing experience on the Xoom more than any other device I have, including my laptop... but the mobile sites popping up every now and then really hamper it. Most sites provide a link to the full site... but some still do not.

I'm posting b/c I searched and couldn't find an answer... If you know, share... otherwise just keep it moving.
I also don't have a xoom of my own yet and I know how:
type about:debug in the address bar
go to the settings and look for the debug options click UAstring
Edit: typo
You can disabled user agent string by typing about:debug into your url address bar. It'll look like nothing will happen until you pull up your browser settings. Under debug change UAString to Desktop. It doesn't work for all sites though.
Edit:Beaten.
In your browser, type about:debug as the URL.
Then head to your browser's settings page, and you'll find new Debug settings. In there, you can change the UAString to have the Xoom recognized as a desktop computer rather an Android device.

The "Desktop" UAString emulates Safari on OSX (why?) and the setting will reset itself every time you switch tasks away from the browser.
Dunno why they couldn't have just made UAString customization a standard feature.

It didn't change for me, even after reboot. The debug menu went away, but not the change.
Also, all KHTML based browsers idenitfy as safari (as well as a chrome identifier).. they put them all in the string for compatibility sake.
